Changes for 2020

Cornhusker Corvette Club will have a new President and Board of

Directors for 2020.

They will inherit many of the changes implemented by the many

Boards of Directors that I have had the privilege to have worked with the last 3 years.

These boards have changed the way Cornhusker Corvette Club decides what charities to support with the funds

the club collects. Keeping more of the funds for local charities.

These boards have added the option of paying by credit card for club accessories – membership dues – social

events and competition events. We owe thanks to Jon Brown for taking the lead on this and getting our accounts

and software set up.

We have also seen our membership computer system change and our accounting system change. Both of these

changes were needed because of outdated software and equipment. In both cases Chris Tooker has taken the

lead and has rebuilt them in new – updated software. Chris Tooker had great deal of help from Jan Richardson

updating the membership system. Together they worked to get the old data base converted. Chris Tooker also

had a lot of help from Paula Eble while updating our accounting system. Both of these transformations took hours

and hours of time and a great deal of effort.

Thank you, Chris Tooker, – Jan Richardson and Paula Eble for putting in the hard work.

These boards have also seen Bill Cashell build and maintain an award winning Cornhusker Corvette Club web site.

Pete Fagan has been very instrumental in making our Facebook page a source of Cornhusker Corvette Club

information. Thank you Pete!

There are a lot of great members that contribute to this club and a lot of it is sometimes taken for granted – it flies

under the radar.

These things have been done with very little disruption to the members of the Cornhusker Corvette Club and have

enhanced the club member’s experience.

From your CCC Proxy Governor,

It’s an honor and a privilege to serve as your proxy Governor. Big shoes to fill, both figuratively and alliterative.

There have been some relatively easy fixes as we move forward in 2020. Several folks have stepped up and taken

charge of the project Jonathan has put in motion.

I attended the November NCCC Governors Meeting and provided a complete report at CCC’s November General

meeting. One of the major issues facing the West Region is the handling of sanctions. The West Region

Governor’s have approved the pooling of all unused sanctions. Putting these unused sanctions in a pool is a major

step forward and allows clubs with sanctioned events planned to use those unused sanctions.

We are in the process of scheduling our competition events for 2020. Just as the past few years it looks like

another jam-packed year. February’s WR Governors meeting is the deadline for scheduling events.

For the new folks interested in autocross racing, and those that might want a refresher course, Don’s autocross

school is scheduled for May 9th. Don will be providing details soon.

General Meeting Minutes December 19 2019

FINAL

Kevin Reit, Club President, presided over the meeting.

The meeting began with the Club reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Kevin asked for a moment of silence for two members of our Club who passed away: Jonathan Brown and Gene

Lefler.

Will Bockerman was in a bad car accident recently. A car ran a red light and hit his truck broad side. The

occupants of the car ran away after hitting Will’s truck. He is in the hospital.

New officers for 2020 will be sworn in next month at the General Meeting. We have also invited three of the

charities we chose to contribute for 2019 to attend our January meeting where we will present them with their

check.

The National Convention next year is in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 5- 10, 2020.

The CCCS Awards Banquet is March 21, 2020 at the Field Cub.

The West Region Banquet is scheduled for April 4,, 2020 at the German-American Club. However, because of a

conflict, there will be a change of date and possibly location which will be announced at the next meeting.

Kevin recognized Gary Brisbois, West Region RCD and Kathy Brisbois National Parliamentarian.

Kevin thanked everyone who brought door prizes and reminded us that Kathy and Jerry Koraleski are still

collecting non-perishable food for the Stephens Center. Kathy Brisbois is collecting toiletries for a homeless

shelter. JB is collecting newspapers for the HUA shelter In Auburn.

In Jayne Reit’s absence Nancy Bronner read the names of Club members who have birthdays In December.

Don Peers introduced the World Champion Soap Box Derby winner, Kelsey Van Waart, from Omaha who told us

about her experience at the Derby and answered questions. CCC helped sponsor the Soap Box Derby.

Carolyn Horst, Secretary, asked for a motion to accept the minutes from the November 2019 meeting. Ray

Zimmerman made a motion to approve the minutes and Perry Dawes seconded the motion.

Ray Kennedy, Vice President, told us there has only been one recommended change to the Operating Rules and

Job

Descriptions. If anyone has any they would like to propose, please see someone on the Rules Committee:

George Horst, Brenda Salmans, Pete Fagan or Ray Kennedy. The requested changes will be published in the

Newsletter next month and voted on in April. He told us it has been a pleasure being able to serve our Club for

the past four years. He complemented J B Benedict on his record keeping. The Awards Banquet is on March 21,

2020. He told us our Club has a large number of hard-core recipients. He asked for members to please attend the

banquet to receive their award since it is difficult and time consuming getting these awards to them after the

banquet.





Kevin explained what a hard-core award is in our Club. It is an award for

the length of time a member has been in our Club: 10, 20, 30, 40 years.

Jayne Reit, Membership Director, was absent, so Kevin gave her report.

We have 284 members who renewed by the cutoff date and about a dozen

after the cutoff date. These renewals dues have been sent into NCCC. We

have new members, Mickiel and Deborah Fontenot, present tonight.

Chris Tooker, Treasurer, told us he and Kevin went over the budget this

past week. We are looking at approximately $1,000 loss over all. Contributors will pick up that loss and we will

still be able to contribute around $10,000 for 2019 to our charities. We received $11,000 from contributors this

past year. We brought in $18,900 from racing with expenses from racing at $12,000. Out of the $6,900 profit

from racing we had expenses for maintenance and equipment purchases leaving about $500 profit from racing.

He said he gives a monthly report to Board members, and if anyone would like to see these, talk to Board

members or him.

Perry Dawes, Co-Social Director, told us we had a great turn out for Toys for Tots and collected $2,600 worth of

toys. He told us there will be a trip to the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green next June. We have 22 people who

have committed. Please contact Perry with any questions.

Craig Pandil, Public Relations, had no report.

Pete Fagan, Editor, thanked Walter Killam for taking over the duties of Editor for next year. He asked if anyone

had any high-resolution copies of the CCC logos. Please Email these to Pete. We have been discussing having a

way to capture the heritage of our Club. He has been trying to put together an article and since he has only been

in the Club a few years, there may be others who have more relevant information. He would appreciate if you

would send this to him. He is working on how to store this information – electronically or hard copies. If you want

a dedicated number for racing, you may request this number from the West Region RCD Gary Brisbois between

January 15 and February 15. He is soliciting volunteers for running the timing equipment at our racing events. He

has the equipment that was ordered this fall for updating our timing equipment. The actual cost for the

equipment came in at a lesser cost then we had thought it would be. Pete and Terry Fagan will be setting up the

first Meet and Greet for next year on January 7th at the Good Life Restaurant, 6:00 p.m., 96th and Highway 370.

Pete talked about purchasing a brick in honor of Jonathan Brown at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling

Green. He is taking up a donation from anyone in our Club who would like to contribute. There were some in our

Club who were concerned about setting a precedent by doing this. This is a personal affair and not a Club

function.

Sharon Renshaw and Steve Wright, Members at Large had nothing to report.

Don Angeroth, Competition Director, told us “Get ready, Spring is coming.” He is working on the racing schedule

for next year. The Driving School will be May 9th at Bellevue University.

Howard Renshaw and Dave Ferguson, Co-Summer Festival Directors, had nothing to report.





J.B. Benedict, Points Chairman, told us to see him if you want to know how many points you have accumulated for

2019. He will not tell you where you finished in the Top 20. Tonight’s meeting is the last opportunity to earn

points for 2019. Our Club finished No 2 in the Nation with 31,116 NCCC points, one of the highest we have ever

had. The Indiana Club that was formed from several clubs won first place with over 44,000 points. Our Club has

only 202 events we can attend in the West Region and this club has almost 500 in their region. He talked about

Hearts United for Animals in Auburn and invited anyone who might like to visit the facility.

New Business: Gene Gau told us about meeting the new CEO of the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green

at the last Governors’ Meeting in St. Louis. They are making improvements to the Museum since a woman made

a $900,000 donation to the Museum. He will be at our Awards Banquet on March 21st, and Gene is hoping we can

set up a Meet and Greet on the Friday night before the Banquet so we can show him around Omaha.

Kevin thanked Holly and Leslie for the great food and hospitality.

Walter Killam was the Birthday winner for December.

John Salmans awarded a BP $50 gift certificate from Service One to Mike Manly.

Ray Zimmerman awarded a free dinner to Linda Dawes at the next month’s

meeting for wearing her name badge to this month’s meeting.

The 50/50 winner in the amount of $118 was Carolyn Horst.

A quilt made by a group of women from CCC (Sharon Renshaw, Lauren Killam, Alice Williamson and Carolyn

Horst) was donated to Ron Hernandez with Moving Veterans Forward to give to a veteran. A motion was made

CORVETTE RACING AT DAYTONA: Start of a New Era

• First public outing for new Corvette C8.R at Roar Before the 24

• All six Corvette Racing drivers to attend three-day test

• Weekend is a dress-rehearsal for season-opening Rolex 24

DETROIT (Dec. 30, 2019) – Corvette Racing returns to the racetrack for another season of IMSA competition, but this time in a very different guise than past years. This weekend’s Roar Before the 24 marks the first public running of the Chevrolet Corvette C8.R, which Corvette Racing will field for this year’s WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

The 2020 season will be Corvette Racing’s 22nd of production-based sports car competition but its first with a mid-engine Corvette. The ground-breaking C8.R made its public debut in October and will race for the first time in next month’s Rolex 24 At Daytona to begin in the IMSA GT Le Mans (GTLM) Championship.

This weekend’s Roar gives teams more than seven hours of track time around Daytona International Speedway’s 3.56-mile, eight-turn road course. The goal for Corvette Racing is for its six drivers to gain enough track time to test the reliability of the new racing Corvette and explore a number of different setup options for the Rolex 24.

The No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Corvette C8.R will have full-season teammates Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor driving with Corvette newcomer Nicky Catsburg. Meanwhile, Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner – ahead of their ninth consecutive season together – will share the No. 4 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Corvette with Marcel Fässler.

Corvette Racing is a three-time winner of the Rolex 24 – in 2001 with the Corvette C5-R and back-to-back in 2015 and 2016 with the Corvette C7.R.

The C8.R is based on the strong foundation of the 2020 Corvette Stingray with both developed simultaneously. There is a deeper level of technology transfer between the race car and production Corvette than ever before, which helps contribute to many of its advancements. As a result, the C8.R shares the highest percentage of parts between the production and race car than any previous generation.

The Corvette C8.R is the fifth racing version that Corvette Racing has fielded since its first season in 1999. Corvette Racing’s record since its debut at the 1999 Rolex 24 is unmatched – 107 victories, 13 IMSA Team Championships, and 12 Manufacturer and Driver titles.

Initial design and development on the Corvette C8.R – with Corvette Racing engineers working alongside Corvette production personnel – began more than five years ago with track testing starting within the last 18 months. Heavy emphasis on wind tunnel and simulation aided in the testing program with that work culminating in a two-day November test at Daytona that gave Corvette Racing a final checklist for items ahead of the Roar and the Rolex.

Corvette Racing will test from Friday through Sunday at the Roar Before the 24. Live timing and scoring will be available at IMSA.com.

ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: "There is a lot to discover and develop. Usually your starting point is better than what you previously had. But this is completely different. We are still in the early stages with this new Corvette. There will be big steps for sure. I don’t know when we will get to the point where we will start making little steps. We need to run this car and we need to race it to find out where we are against our competition. We are concentrating on our own work. Whenever it becomes race time, we will know where we actually are."

JORDAN TAYLOR, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: "As many miles you can put on the car is optimal. The C8.R is obviously still very new, so reliability is always the first question. The Corvette Racing guys have done an unbelievable job designing and developing it. Pace will come eventually, but it already feels like a very solid and competitive car. As many laps as we can get at the Roar and going through the program, getting all the drivers on the same page from a setup point of view and then the little things like pit stops and driver changes will be different than what we’ve had in the past. The car is a little more tricky to get in and out. Understanding that muscle memory of the process of getting in and out, where the seatbelts go, where the drinks bottle is, where the air hose goes… those little details that we haven’t refined that were refined with the C7.R are things that will show up in a 24-hour event, so those are things we will need to check off the list at the Roar."

NICKY CATSBURG, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: "I can’t wait for the Roar and to be there with Corvette Racing. It will be my first time in the Corvette C8.R and I honestly can’t wait to do my first laps in it. The experience in the Chevrolet Simulator provided valuable insight into what I can expect with the C8.R. That should help with the getting used to the car on the track. For me, it’s a brand new car, a new team and two new teammates. But it will be a great challenge, and I’m really looking forward to it."

OLIVER GAVIN, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: "The team is going to have a very structured plan. And that’s one of the things that’s so good about Corvette Racing. We plan our time and fundamentally understand what all we have to work through and the list of things we need to achieve. The third drivers will need time in the car. We’ll all have to work through that program and procedure as best we can. Certainly we’ll learn a huge amount every time we go on track just with how certain tires work, how the braking package works, the aero setup, weight placement… all kinds of different thoughts that the team will look to work through. We know that of that list of 50 things we want to try and achieve, the chances are that if we can come away with 60 or 70 percent of that done, it’s a pretty big win."

TOMMY MILNER, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: "The development on the Corvette C8.R, compared to previous generations, in a lot of ways is the same process. You go through the normal procedures of testing new things, except in this case everything is new. It’s been a lot of fun going through the process of something new, trying to understand how things work and helping the engineers understand all these new parts and pieces. There are some aspects where we have no input but others where we have a great deal. It’s exciting having raced C7.R for its full generation and now to start something new. I’m excited for what this car has to offer and see how it races."

MARCEL FÄSSLER, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: "It makes me super happy to be back for another year with Corvette Racing and to start at Daytona. I’m looking forward to my very first time in the new Corvette C8.R. When I was a child, I remember how exciting it was to open my first Christmas present. That’s what this is like! CCC Supports Local Charities By Bill Cashell

The Cornhusker Corvette Club has always been a great supporter of charities. In the past, most of the support has

been for national charities with some support for state level of the same charities. This year, CCC made the

decision to support local organizations that do so much for our community. The three that we choose this year

are Moving Veterans Forward, Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals, and Precious Memories Child Care. All three

have strong ties to Cornhusker Corvette Club.

Moving Veterans Forward is the life passion of club members Ron & Kim Hernandez.

They are dedicated to helping homeless Veterans in Iowa and Nebraska to get placed in

homes. The main goal is to give these veterans the boost that they need to turn

themselves around and become more self-sufficient.

Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals leads the nation in providing

medical and physical rehabilitation for adults and children.

They were instrumental in helping club members Carolyn Edmundson and Craig Olson.

Precious Memories is a non-profit day care that cares for children that may have nowhere

else to go. The dedicated staff cares for up to 100 children. About half of the children are in

foster care, removed from their homes because of severe neglect and abuse. Others are

struggling with autism, fetal alcohol syndrome, lead poisoning or birth defects.

Some CCC members are not as familiar with Precious Memories, although several

members have supported them for years. Kathy and I first became aware of them

19 years ago when our neighbor, who worked in the Mayor’s office, asked for our

help to arrange a Christmas Party. They learned of these children and families in

need at Precious Memories who would not have much for Christmas and wanted

our help to give them a party. The following year, Kathy made the decision to take

this day care and their family’s needs on herself to keep the Christmas party, lunch

and gifts from Santa going with the support from friends and coworkers. It has

continued through the years and we are so grateful to all of the people who have supported them at Christmas as

well as throughout the year with used clothing, furniture, toys, etc.





Ray Zimmerman, or “Santa” as he’s better known, is fantastic with the kids and they love him. His elf, Nancy,

helps him get ready before meeting the kids who can’t wait to have a visit from Santa.

Ray has given many hours of his time helping get these kids a new fenced, playground so that they have a safe

place to play. Also helping out again at this year’s party were Monica Baxter and Jodi DePetro.

Many of our CCC members have also been great supporters of Precious Memories, including Pat and Sandy Swift,

Bob and Carolyn Edmundson, Harvey and JoAnn Lenners, Ron and Kim Hernandez, Ron and Linda Hughbanks,

Gene Gau, Perry and Linda Dawes, and Cheryl and Gary Sondyj, and their son Rob.

The founder and executive director of Precious Memories Child Care is Verna Kephart

or as the children loving call her, “Grandma Verna”. She, along with her dedicated

staff, have been caring for Omaha's disadvantaged and special needs children for

over 50 years, raised three biological children, two step children and many foster

children through the years, including adopting two special needs children from the

day care. Her mission statement simply says: “To accept every child ‘as is’,

regardless of ability, and build from there.”

Sadly, Grandma Verna passed away this past November, after giving most of her life to helping disadvantaged

children and their families have a better life. We visited Verna in her home with Steve and Monica Baxter a

couple of months before she passed. She had not left her home since last year’s Christmas party and was almost

blind from macular degeneration but she still had that amazing spirit and love for the children she was helping. It

is a privilege to help people like this who do so much for others, helping them improve and better their lives.
