Greetings:

On behalf of the National Alumni Association (NAA) of Bethune-Cookman University, Inc., I extend to you a warm welcome to the 49th Annual Convention. It is my hope that you will be an integral part of the entire convention.

Our theme for this year – “Living the Legacy - A Red Carpet Affair” promises to be just that. Thanks to the entire Miami/Dade Chapter, president and chairperson, Shirlyon McWhorter and John Williams, co-chairperson for their tirelessness work in making this 49th Annual Convention a success. The fruits of your labor will be seen from the beginning with our Public Opening and Welcome, the State of the University message, the Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Memorial Breakfast, the crowning of Ms. Alumni and her Court, touring the city of Miami, and ending with A Red Carpet Affair Gala.

The workshops for this year include: Update on Alumni Affairs, Marah Beltz, Manager of Alumni Giving, “Engaging and Developing Alumni Through the Generations”, led by alumnus Anthony Brown, “Role of Technology and Social Media Management”, and “Let’s Talk” – a time for chapter sharing.

Thank you for your attendance and I hope you will share your ideas as we work to continue “Living the Legacy”, that our founder, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune left for us.

Sincerely,

Jennifer L. Adams, President National Alumni Association of Bethune-Cookman University, Inc.

Dear Wildcats, Family, and Friends,

On behalf of the Miami Alumni Chapter, I am honored and delighted to welcome you to the 49th National Alumni Association Convention in sunny South Florida. The Chapter has worked tirelessly to provide you with a quality convention that includes all that Miami has to offer.

The theme for the 2017 Convention is Living the Legacy: A Red Carpet Affair. This theme offers a unique platform for a constructive dialog addressing the legacy, gift or bequest that has been handed down, endowed or conveyed to us, the esteemed alum of Bethune-Cookman University, from our founder, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune.

It is undisputable that we have a proud past and I believe that we can look forward to an even greater future by living the legacy. We have a responsibility to our alma mater. Here are 5 suggestions of what we can do to make sure that the legacy continues:

● Exercise Your Leadership Skills: Join the Alumni Association, join or help start a new committee, become a Chapter Officer or a National Officer.

● Hire Other Alumni for Internship or Jobs: ● Recruit and help Retain students: The mission of the association is to serve as ambassadors to assist

the university with student recruitment efforts. ● Give what You Can: Whether you donate $1.50, $150.00, or $1,500.00, your gift can make a

difference. Why? Because, the number of alumni who give – not the total dollar amount given is what’s important when awarding rankings for colleges and universities.

● Engage at Every Level Every Day in Every Way: We must all get involved. Board engagement, university leadership engagement, faculty, staff and student engagement is paramount to our legacy of ‘responsibility to our young people.’

Thank you so much for your attendance. We look forward to the dialog, dining, dancing and networking that will take place over the next 5 days.

Wildcat Love,

Shirlyon J. McWhorter, Esq.

Founded in 1904 by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Edison O. Jackson, Ed.D., President OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

June 21, 2017 Dear Alumni Family, It is with a spirit of warmth and appreciation that I welcome you to the 49th Annual National Alumni Association Convention! This Convention is truly an exciting time for the Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) family; one where we gather to celebrate each other and the accomplishments of the University, while we make plans to push the institution forward. This year’s theme, “Living the Legacy” clearly reflects our shared commitment to continuing the great work of our beloved and esteemed founder Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune. She left for us a powerful legacy that continues to pave our path and light our way. B-CU has grown tremendously over the past few years. Our student profile is increasing. The University continues to add baccalaureate and graduate degree programs that serve to provide students with the tools and resources to effectively compete in an ever-changing world. B-CU is also closer to reaching its goal of becoming the best small research-driven university in the nation, evidenced by consistent increases in our faculty profile, research performed by faculty and students, and exposure at national and international conventions. On behalf of the entire B-CU family, I wish to express my sincere gratitude for your support. It is because of your generosity that our beloved University is better-equipped at preparing the next generation of global leaders. As we continue our ascent to greatness, I humbly ask that you continue to support B-CU in its endeavors. It is our goal to bring innovation to our practices to ensure that the B-CU educational experience is truly a transformational one. This is a Divine work, and we are thrilled at the opportunities for partnership and growth. As this Convention commences, let us take this time to reaffirm Dr. Bethune’s legacy, and the charge to provide top-tier educational opportunities for our young people. We must focus on the phenomenal growth happening at B-CU and how its alumni, as a cohesive unit, can add further to the progression of the institution. Once again, thank you for being proud and committed alumni of the GREAT Bethune-Cookman University. Sincerely, Edison O. Jackson, Ed.D. President

Dear Bethune-Cookman University Alumni:

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 49th Annual National Alumni Convention. Another year has passed and how grateful I am to have been a part of so much change. I have seen much from our alumni as your commitment to the University grows each year. Your sense of responsibility to our students never wavers and is what will ensure the Legacy of our Founder, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, will continue for generations to come.

Thank you to each alumni chapter that has started a scholarship for our students and to our individual alumni who have given their gifts to make certain our young Wildcats can maintain their education. Thank you especially to each alum who has mentored a student, given students hope in time of doubt, said a prayer for those who needed it most and who have picked them up when they have been down. Those moments stay with our young people and the strength of our alumni who show our young people that Wildcats support each other truly speak louder than any words.

I look forward to continuing to work with each of you in the upcoming academic year as we push forward in our support of students and the growth of B-CU. Thank you to for your ongoing support of the University, your communities and the legacy of Dr. Bethune. Together we will influence success at Bethune-Cookman University.

Have a blessed and successful convention and I look forward to seeing each of you. Go Wildcats!

Sincerely,

Marah Beltz B-CU Class of 2006 Alumni Affairs Manager

Convention History In 1932, Mr. Edward R. Rodriguez convened the General Alumni Association Meeting in Daytona Beach. Although unchartered as a national organization, interest was high and alumni gave their full support to the annual meetings. Because of the high level of alumni involvement, National President Attorney Horace Hill chartered the General Alumni Association as a National Organization - growing outside the boundaries of Daytona and offering inclusion of members and chapters near and far. In, 1969 Dr. Johnny L. Jones convened the first National Alumni Convention in Washington, DC. It was the first official convention and the first time outside the city of Daytona Beach, FL. This movement to "take the show on the road" gave Bethune-Cookman Alumni the opportunity to showcase our alma mater in areas where we were a lesser recognized organization. The National Alumni Association has held conventions in all of the U.S. cities that have chapters and internationally in the Bahamas.

Vanessa Lloyd is the widow of the late Rev. Maurice Lloyd who she fondly remembers as her beloved best friend of 35 years and whom also praises for his leadership in her spiritual growth. She is the mother of 3 daughters (Joyce; Jeryl; & Shakila) and 3 sons (the late Maurice Jr; Jafaska; & Maurice Shavaugh). Grandmother of 18 and the great-grandmother of 7. She is an active member of New Life Ministries where her cousin Rev. Dr. Victor Gooden is the pastor. Vanessa is the Director of Disability Support Services at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University where she has been employed for 32 years. She recently received the Ken Marquard Award of Excellence which is the highest award given by the Florida Association of Higher Education in Disability. Vanessa received her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Bethune Cookman College now University and her Master of Science degree in Technology Management from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. She is a proud sister of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. Her passion is in singing, shopping and most definitely football. She credits the latter to her son Maurice ShaVaugh who played as a little one in Pop Warner to professionally in the Canadian Football League - CFL. She can be heard throughout the stadium in cheer singing WILDCATS LETS GO...

Vanessa says that the reading of Philippians 3:13-14 "...I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." says it all.

Nearing the end of my journey:

What an exciting year 2016-2017 has been serving as Miss Alumni. The honor and respect I felt every time I wore the sash continues to give me pure chills. Everyone I encountered as Miss Alumni rather it was during a walk on the street (Classic), attending football games or greeting others during special events, I was always received me with high reverence for the title I wore. This showed me that there is esteem love for our Great University. So I must admit that as I come near to the end of this journey in my life I feel some sadness, but also happiness to pass the crown to someone who wants and have worked hard to receive the honor of becoming Miss Alumni 2017-2018.

Ms. Gold Judy Holiday

I had the distinct honor and pleasure of being crowned as Ms. Gold 2016-2017.

I grew up as one child of ten, and my husband grew up as one child of nine. We both were the first in our families to go to college. In fact, it was because of attending Bethune - Cookman College (as it was called back then), that we even had the chance to meet! I was on scholarship and got to experience an amazing educational experience that had a profound impact on the rest of my life. This is why I became

so passionate as an Alumni and I have made it my mission to always give back! For only together can we all truly do more.

What was my experience as Ms. Gold Alumni you ask? Well, there is only one word I think of to describe it: PHENOMENAL!

Some of the greatest highlights for me this year have been: ~Participating in the 2016 BCU Homecoming Parade (where I had the honor of meeting former First Lady and Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton) ~Organizing the 2016 Tailgate for Palm Beach ~County BCU students and the BCU Alumni ~Giving Back to the BCU Cheerleaders ~Giving Back to the BCU Marching 100 ~Participating in the Annual 2016 BCU Alumni Florida Classic ~Being a part of the Palm Beach County Chapter – NAA 13th Annual HBCU Scholarship Luncheon

~And just simply being a part of the 2016-2017 BCU Alumni Royal Court

And above all, I would like to thank God who is the most important thing in my life. I also want to thank my wonderful husband who has loved me unconditionally for almost 38 years. He is also an Bethune Cookman alumnus and stood by me in helping to accomplish my dream of being titled, Ms. Gold. I also want to thank the Palm Beach Alumni Chapter, especially our president, Sylvia Gibson, who stuck with me and mentored me throughout my reign this past year. And to my children, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, my closest family and friends, college-mates and AKA sorority members who have supported me, I also owe you my deepest gratitude.

In conclusion, being Ms. Gold has been an awesome, fulfilling and unique experience. I will miss it dearly, but I'm happy to pass the crown on to the next willing and honorable candidate. I vow to keep serving my community along with the underprivileged, mentally and physically challenged population, just as I have been doing for nearly 38 years. But, now I will leave you with just this little tidbit from Ms. Mary McLeod Bethune herself to impart to you: “Invest in the human soul. Who knows, it might be a diamond in the rough”.

Ms. Maroon Linda Swain

I have such fond memories from the night I was crowned and can only think of what an honor and a true blessing it has been to represent the National Alumni Association. I was excited to participate in the Bethune-Cookman University Homecoming Parade and Florida Blue Florida Classic. While at the Florida Blue Florida Classic it was an enormous pleasure to meet and chat with the oldest living descendant of our founder, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, Mr. Albert Bethune. He and many alums remember my aunt, Nurse Alice Ray, when they attended Bethune-Cookman. It was like catching up with family history.

I would like to thank the St Petersburg Chapter for encouraging me to take this journey and supporting me all the way.
