The Ting TingsThird year Illustration student Milan Abad has had his artwork selected for the cover of the new Ting Tings album ‘Sounds from Nowheresville’.

To celebrate their first UK tour in over two years the Ting Tings went back to their art scene beginnings with an artwork contest called ‘Show Us Yours’. Up and coming artists were encouraged to submit photographs, graphics, and videos for their second album.

One image by Milan Abad especially resonated with the band. “He produced a piece of artwork that is just amazing, and we fell in love with it, so it became the front cover,” Jules de Martino says. “It’s a totally cool piece, and it kind of transcends what our album’s about.”

Why study on Preparation for Higher Education at AUCB?

Our Preparation for Higher Education Courses provide some fantastic opportunities to enjoy a specialist art, design or media programme in a Higher Education setting. We offer a one-year Foundation Diploma in Art, Design and Media, a two-year Extended Diploma in Art and Design and a one-year Diploma in Photography.

The Foundation Course is one of the most successful in the country with nearly half of the students coming from across the UK, and throughout the world.

Satisfaction rates on our courses are excellent and students are highly complimentary about resources and staff. They love the opportunity to be able to work alongside Degree students in an exciting and creative environment.

Staff delivering our courses have a wealth of experience and knowledge and are very much engaged in their own practice, which brings up to date knowledge and experience across the curriculum.

The Foundation and Diploma courses offer students a real opportunity to make an informed and effective decision about their eventual progression to Higher Education. Last year the progression from our courses was really strong with 95% of our students achieving their first choice Degree place.

Another plus point is that you don’t have to pay Tuition Fees if you are under 19 on 1st September of the year that your course commences!

To find out more about our Preparation for HIgher Education courses why not come along to an open day. Details on page 16.

Preparation for Higher Education

Sam Tuck

Extended Diploma in Art and Design

BA (Hons) Architecture

Even with such a good reputation, I never believed that in the space of two years the Extended Diploma Course could teach me so many new skills. Whether it was through printmaking, model making or life drawing, inside a month I had been exposed to the endless possibilities in design. I went into the course with abilities in drawing, but after being educated in the physicality of design, within a few weeks I had developed a new aptitude for 3D. That’s the beauty of the course, you may go in with the passion but it’s the course which exposes the talents. Following the completion of my Diploma, I applied to study on the BA (Hons) Architecture course at the University College. Now in my third year, I will be graduating in June. I recently completed my final year project of a beach hut, follow my journey on: http://www.aucb.ac.uk/newsevents/schoolscollegesliaison.aspx

When I finished my A Levels in Art, Photography and Product Design I was still unsure about which degree course I wanted to take at University so I chose to study the Foundation Diploma course to help me decide. During the rotation week of the course I was able to try several aspects of different courses which helped me to decide the Degree I was most interested in. I chose the pathway 3D Art, Craft and Design after discussing with my tutor that I was interested in the Architecture Degree course. The project I am currently working on is titled ‘Interdependency’ and I have recently completed a project called ‘Shelter’. I have really enjoyed studying at the AUCB, there is a really friendly atmosphere here and I have been able to access great facilities and resources. My long term goals are to create a varied portfolio and become an established Architect.

Foundation Diploma in Art and Design

Pathway: 3D Art, Craft and Design

I chose to study on the Foundation Diploma course as I want to pursue a career that best makes use of my creativity and artistic talent, but allows me to explore which area I am best suited to. The first stage of the Foundation course really pushed me out of my comfort zone and I tried a variety of methods with different practitioners. I chose to study the Animation pathway last minute, even though I originally wanted to study Illustration. My projects on the Animation pathway have involved making a storyboard and a 30 second animation that has to convey a message to the audience.

good grounding to prepare me for the industry.

DO YOU HAVE ANY LASTING MEMORIES OF THE AUCB ?

My tutors and the atmosphere there. It was a great place to study.

HOW HAVE YOU GOT TO WHERE YOU ARE ?

During my final year of my Degree I did an internship at SHOWstudio, which really helped introduce me to the fashion photography world. After finishing my degree, I moved to London. I wasn’t completely sure I wanted to purely pursue a career in photography,

WHY DID YOU STUDY AT THE AUCB ?

It had a very good reputation and I had already completed my Foundation course there. When I chose to study photography, it was regarded as one of the best university’s in the country for that discipline, so I decided to do the FdA in Commercial Photography at the AUCB.

WHAT WERE THE BEST PARTS OF YOUR DEGREE ?

I really enjoyed the commercial approach of the degree and the work experience was incredibly useful. The tutors were lovely and helpful and they had interesting, industry lecturers come in. It was

We had the opportunity to interview Rhea, a successful graduate from the University College and here’s her story:

so I decided to try quite a few different things within the creative photographic industry to see what other potential creative jobs were out there. I had a wish list of who I’d like to work for and would email and offer myself for free. That was a good way of getting to know the industry, the people and what direction I wanted to go in. In my first year I worked at a few photographic studios, interned at Big Active and also interned for set designer, Shona Heath. It became very clear in the second year that working for Shona was what I really loved. I was her assistant for 4 years and during that time, independently, designed and put together Tim Walker’s book ‘Pictures’. Working for Shona gave me a strong foundation for being able to become a set designer and run my own business. In April 2010, I left and went it alone! It started off slowly and then I started working with Tim Walker a bit. That was the turning point in my career and I haven’t stopped since!

WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB ?

The variety and bizarre things I create and design. Every job is so different from the last. It’s incredibly creative and fun (but also very stressful!).

DO YOU HAVE ANY CAREER HIGHLIGHTS ?

My Selfridges window, being nominated for a British Arrow Craft award for Production Designer for the McDonald’s TV commercial, being nominated for Best Music Video Award for Jessie J’s video ‘Price Tag’, working with Tim Walker and recently being taken on and now being represented by the agency Art & Commerce.

CAN YOU TELL US WHAT YOUR TYPICAL DAY IS LIKE ?

I get in to my studio for 9.30am. I have two permanent girls who work for me. Every job is different, so we could be sourcing items for a shoot, designing and putting together proposals, designing and making props, going to prop houses, putting together budgets, going for meetings – there isn’t really a typical day!

DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO DO WHAT YOU ARE DOING NOW?

No. My job found me! I always loved being creative and making things and not being limited to one specific medium. I was

from Captain America

always interested in fashion and creating worlds and somehow this job suits the way that I am creatively.

FINALLY, WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?

I didn’t see the past year or so coming, and really don’t have a clue about what the future holds. I’m currently trying to cross over into more moving image and installations, so am just running with it and seeing what happens. I’d like to do some bigger projects as fashion has a very quick turnover for projects. Secretly I’d love to do something with Tim Burton, but I think that might have to wait a little while!

Get InvolvedWe are interested in developing links and relationships with schools and colleges and can offer taster and insight days in all subject areas.

As a recent example, a group of thirteen Year 11 students from St Peters School visited the University College for a taster session in BA (Hons) Modelmaking. Students created alginate moulds and plaster casts of their fingers and mouths and also made animal and fish models from card.

The Modelmaking workshop was a fantastic opportunity for the Year 12 Art and Design students to experience new ways of working in a professional space. It was exciting for them to have a tour of the studios and see the students in action, creating a whole range of intriguing and exciting models. All of the AS students were fascinated and inspired by the incredible outcomes on display. The workshop was enjoyable and a great way to spend a lesson outside of the classroom! Thank you AUCB!

ARTS FLASH

To mark the 50th anniversary of the world’s first manned spaceflight by Yuri Gagarin, BA Modelmaking Student Kirsty Obbard was commissioned to create a 1: 20 scale model of the Vostok capsule.

Recently the model returned to the University College to be prepared for an appearance at the summer ‘New Blades’ exhibition in London, the premier showcase for graduating professional model makers.

Billy Boyd Cape (Year 0 - Film Art and Production student) directed a film titled Doctor Kaufalio which has been nominated for the BFI Future Film Festival 2012 – ‘Best Fiction Film’.

AUCB Graduate Joe Cornish, co-wrote the screen play for ‘The Adventures of Tintin’ which was a runner up at the 2012 BAFTA Awards Ceremony – ‘Animated Film’.

We recently launched our exciting new nationwide creative competition ‘Who Are You’. The competition challenged 16 to 18 year olds, to demonstrate their talent in answering the brief ‘Who are you?’ by creating a piece of art.

A panel of judges from the AUCB, JCDecaux, Creative Review magazine and other creatives then selected a shortlist with the final ten winning designs being chosen by the public on Facebook in early March. Winning entries will then be printed and posted on billboards throughout the country in April.
