Assalamualaikum w.b.t. and Salam Sejahtera.

A very warm welcome to all participants and speakers to the 7th Regional Conference on Molecular Medicine in conjunction with 3rd National Congress for Cancer Research. I feel very honoured to be invited to write this message for the programme book. As a researcher myself, I value the tradition of a scientific conference which brings together researchers, academics, professionals, students and industry players from various countries to share and discuss their findings and expertise. The challenge nowadays in research is how to effectively harness the transformative power of scientific findings to make life-changing initiatives and game-changing innovations that will benefit the people and communities. For this purpose, the sharing expertise and discussions between the leading experts and our local researchers will certainly help strengthen research collaboration. The participation of the post-graduate students and young scientists will also enhance the scientific talent pool in the nation. For the medical and health sector, molecular medicine or precision medicine is already making significant inroads in healthcare and providing personalised therapies to patients with various diseases including cancer.

I am proud that this outstanding conference is organised by UKM Medical Molecular Biology Institute (UMBI), which is one of the leading institutes in cancer and molecular medicine research in Malaysia. I am impressed with the line-up of invited speakers, both local and international experts for that I believe, they will deliver an impetus to stimulate new and exciting ideas in research and collaboration. I would like to thank the speakers for their participations and the organising committee for arranging an impressive scientific programme. I encourage the young academics and postgraduate students to engage and interact with the experts to gain wisdom and valuable advice and ideas for their future research.

I am delighted to welcome all the speakers and participants to the 7th Regional Conference on Molecular Medicine in conjunction with 3rd National Congress for Cancer Research. The twin elements of this conference will cover a wide range of hot topics in the fields of cancer and lifestyle-related chronic diseases. I am proud that UMBI is again taking the lead in organising a national-level conference focused on molecular medicine and cancer. As a Higher Institution Centre of Excellence under the Ministry of Higher Education, this leadership role certainly reflects the strength of UMBI in cancer and molecular medicine research. UMBI is one of the flagship research institutes of UKM which has make a national impact with projects such as The Malaysian Cohort and the Space Science Programme.

I would like to congratulate the organising committee and the management of UMBI for their efforts in organising this conference. Special thanks to the scientific committee for coming up with an outstanding programme packed with lectures on the latest findings and developments as well as cutting edge technologies. These lectures will certainly stimulate new research interests and collaboration. I would also like to thank the invited speakers, for sharing their insights and exciting findings with us. The poster discussion and oral presentation sessions will certainly provide a good opportunity for our local researchers particularly the young scientists to share their research findings.

I hope this conference will be a pleasant and fruitful event to the participants, both socially and scientifically. I also encouraged the interaction of research students and young academics with the more established experts, to exchange views and wisdoms. This conference will certainly provide a networking opportunity for the researchers to form new collaboration in research. On behalf of the organising committee, it gives me a great pleasure to extend a warm welcome to all the speakers and participants to the 7th Regional Conference on Molecular Medicine in conjunction with 3rd National Conference for Cancer Research. Molecular or genomics medicine has paved the way for precision medicine which is tailoring the treatment based on the individual genes, lifestyle and environment. Precision medicine is already changing healthcare practices and the research in molecular medicine will certainly discover new knowledge and more biomarkers that could be applied to the management of patients. This year, we have an impressive faculty of speakers, local and international, who will be sharing with us their knowledge and research findings. Our international speakers come from as far as Australia and also from Singapore and Thailand. I am pleased to say that the scientific committee has prepared an exciting programme over 3 days covering plenary talks and symposia, which should provide the latest updates in the field molecular medicine and cancer research. Importantly, this conference would not be possible without the excellent papers contributed by participants. I thank all the participants for their contributions and their partaking in the poster and oral presentations.

GROUND FLOOR

BIOBANK

The largest Biobank in Southeast Asia with a collection of 6.2 million biospecimen tubes.

LEVEL 2

GENOME SEQUENCING LABORATORY

Visit our state-of-the-art centre for genome sequencing research. Our laboratory is equipped with the latest and fastest sequencing machines, including HiSeq, MiSeq, Ion Proton and Ion PGM Sequencer.

PROTEOMIC LABORATORY

Visit our state-of-the-art centre for proteomic research. The 2 main equipment in this lab are ‘ABSciex 5600 + LCMS Triple TOF’ and ‘Bruker UltrafleXtreme MALDI-TOF/TOF’.

UMBI MUSEUM

Come and learn about UMBI’s history. The exhibits include a collection of our first batch of lab equipment and the time-line of key events in the journey of UMBI as a research centre.

LEVEL 3

C. ELEGANS LABORATORY

This lab is used for the culture and maintenance of C. elegans. These worms are ideal biological models for a better understanding of the cellular processes because they share many homologous genes with humans.

UMBI-ANGKASA MICROGRAVITY LAB

This lab is equipped with the one and only ‘Desktop Random Positioning Machine (RPM) from Dutch Space Technolo-gies’ in Malaysia, which enables the simulation of microgravity involving small model organisms like C. elegans, plants and seeds.
