July is the height of our summer . If the weather is set fair, it is a time to relax and enjoy life a little . Take afternoon tea on the lawn . Put up a parasol . Have dainty sandwiches and pastries . And is there anything more delicious than freshly-baked scones with strawberry jam and cream?

Strawberries and cream are traditionally served at Wimbledon . They grace garden parties and fetes across the land . They are, without doubt, the taste of summer .

July is also traditionally the start of many people’s summer holidays . There are all those memories of families packing for a week or a fortnight at the seaside . Or single travellers setting out for adventure at home or abroad .

The Lady of Shalott is both an 1832 poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson and a painting (1888) inspired by the poem, done by the English artist John William Waterhouse.

On either side the river lie Long fields of barley and of rye, That clothe the wold and meet the sky; And through the field the road runs by To many-towered Camelot; And up and down the people go,Gazing where the lilies blowRound an island there below,The island of Shalott .

Willows whiten, aspens quiver, Little breezes dusk and shiverThrough the wave that runs for ever By the island in the river Flowing down to Camelot . Four grey walls, and four grey towers Overlook a space of flowers, And the silent isle imbowers The Lady of Shalott .

Some people find painting a chore . The inside of a house can wait until winter . But summer is the time to paint the outside of a house .

Wooden doors and window frames need a coat of gloss . Fascia boards run along behind the gutters . Barge boards are on the gable ends of a house . Both have to face up to the weather . Painting them can be tricky . You need ladders and a head for heights .

Some people go further . Their houses are rendered . They paint the walls in a glorious array of colours .

Many gardens are full of fruit in July . Strawberries, redcurrants, blackcurrants, gooseberries and summer raspberries are all ready, one after another . There is a glut of fruit!

You need a dry day to pick the fruit . The redcurrants come off in strings of bright berries. But the blackcurrants need picking one at a time . It can be

tedious . And the gooseberry bushes have nasty thorns . But it is a pleasure to be out in the sunshine in among the fruit bushes .

Gardeners need to keep an eye on the fruits . As soon as they are ripe, the birds will have a feast . Some people put nets over the bushes . Others rush out and pick the rich harvest straight away .

Having picked all that fruit, what can you do with it?

Strawberries are delicious and sweet straight from the garden . Just pour a little cream over them .

Other fruits make delicious pies . Blackcurrants and gooseberries are tart . They need a little sugar adding . Fruit pie and custard is a real treat .

But there is so much fruit! It needs to be preserved . Making jam is a great way of doing this . Getting the jam to set can be a problem . But the jars of jam should keep for months .

Other people bottle fruit . It takes time, but it makes a store of goodness for the winter . And, of course, nowadays, many people just freeze their excess fruit!

Summertime Sporting Memories

Over the years, summer has brought us some wonderful sporting moments . We have watched and read about the exploits of the great sportsmen and women .

In cricket, we have been inspired by the batting of Bradman, or the bowling of Jim Laker and Tony Lock . We have been in awe of the great touring sides from the West Indies . Or we have been excited to hear of the latest twists and turns in the Ashes series against Australia .

We have witnessed some marvellous moments at Wimbledon and at the Open Golf Championships .

For years we have enjoyed the buzz of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone . And even that winter sport, football, has brought us great summertime sporting memories, from the World Cup of 1966 to the European Championships of 1996 .

In tennis, we remember the great stars of the past, Rod Laver and John Newcombe, and the heroics on court of Maureen Connolly (Little Mo) and Althea Gibson . And our own Andy Murray winning Wimbledon twice .

There is little to beat the sporting drama of Formula 1

motor racing . Whether at Brands Hatch or at Silverstone, the British Grand Prix has produced heroic champions . Who can forget the exploits at Silverstone of two great Scots, Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart?

Over the years, the battle for golf’s claret jug has seen many a tense finish. The final round of the Open Golf Championship has witnessed some come to the final hole in glory, and others win it only on that final green. Great players such as Peter Thomson and Arnold Palmer have been worthy winners .

What is your special summertime sporting memory?
