Need to invest in ‘living together’

1999: “Local Community Initiatives”

- Emergence of the concept, but no clear definition yet.

2000: first criteria were set up

- Activities in which asylum seekers can participate

- Raising awareness, target = neighbours

- Infrastructure and accommodation

2004: Research by 3 universities

- The attitude of Belgian population towards asylum seekers

“Community integration wants to create a positive attitude of Belgian citizens towards reception centres for asylum seekers, and strives for a correct, realistic image of ‘the asylum seeker’

Operational goalsPriorities are translated into concrete goals: adapted each year according the needs and situation of the reception centres and Fedasil in general.

E.g. Problems of agression of single male asylum seekers in the RC => concrete community actions that involve this group

Reception crisis => make sure to communicate about this in presentations and local newsletters
