I am extremely happy to know that Indian Society of Genetics, Biotechnology Research and
Development is organizing its National Conference on “Biotechnology: Resource Management for
Sustainable Nature in 21st Century” during April 22-23, 2016 at J.P.N. Sabhagaar, Dr. B. R.
Ambedkar University, Agra.
Genomics-assisted breeding offers unique opportunities for improving efficient use of land, water,
biodiversity, and other resources and inputs, as also for enhancing resilience to accentuating biotic
and abiotic stresses towards meeting the Sustainable Development Goals. In recent years, CRISPR
(Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palinodromic Repeats) – a powerful genome editing tool for
introducing a modification into an endogenous gene, has vastly expanded the scope of „omics‟ in
genetic engineering with least biosafety concerns. But, this approach has yet to receive the due
attention of Indian scientists and other stakeholders.
In the light of the above developments in the area of Biotechnology, especially in context of
sustainable natural resource management, it is hoped that this conference would serve as a platform
for intellectual matching and sharing of expertise and success stories and mutual interaction in
different areas of the frontline sciences, including the CRISPR research.
I extend my best wishes and greetings to the conference organizers for organizing such an event for
the welfare of the people.

MESSAGE
It is a pleasure to know that the Indian Society of Genetics, Biotechnology Research & Development,
Agra is organizing the National Conference on “Biotechnology: Resource Management for Sustainable
Nature in 21st
Century (BRMSNC-2017)” during 22-23 April, 2017 at J.P. Sabhagaar, Agra, Uttar Pradesh.
Agriculture constitutes the lifeline of India, which is directly associated with 67.63% livelihood of our population.
Indian Agriculture has made impressive progress over the years and phenomenal growth has been observed
in oilseed production. India is a major producer and consumer of oilseeds and to meet the domestic demand
country imports edible oil worth more than 70,000 crores annually accounting for more than 50% of the total
value of Agricultural imports. Among the various edible oils mustard oil occupies a prime position as a cooking
medium. The importance of the Indian mustard among Brassica can be gauged from the fact that rapeseed
mustard contributes nearly 24% of our total oil seed production and 90% area under Brassica crops. Rapeseed
mustard is expected to play a major role in bridging the widening gap of demand and production of edible oils.
However, attempts to enhance productive potential of the crop significantly are not fully successful due to their
cultivation under diverse and constrained ecologies. It is necessary that key issues related to „Biotechnology
and Resource Management in all its facets; including technology development and policy initiatives for
sustainable farming in tune with global climate change are deliberated among all the stakeholders.
I am sure that this Conference will provide opportunities to discuss emerging issues related to assured oilseed
supply for oil security of the country.
I wish the Conference a great success.
With kind regards

Environmental sustainability is an integral component of food and feed security which are mutually
exclusive. Achieving global food security while maintaining natural resource base is the greatest
challenge faced by mankind. Climate changes are expected to adversely affect food security mainly
in developing countries. Hence, a holistic approach integrating biotechnology and traditional agro-
technologies is needed for ensuring global food Feed, Fibre , security.
I trust that this interdisciplinary conference will cover topical issues related to recent innovations
and applications of biotechnology including genomics and proteomics and nano- engineering in
crop improvement , food and chemical industries ; development of climate resilient high yielding
improved varieties and for management of plant genetic resources etc .
I wish scientists, scholars and development functionaries converging at a common platform during
this national seminar will avail excellent opportunity to share experiences and to work out a holistic
