CONTEMPORARY TRENDS IN REMOVABLE PARTIAL PROSTHODONTICS
Background
In the last decade, there has been a rise in the number of flexible resin removable partial
dentures (FRPD) appearing in dental publications and being offered by dental laboratories. A
2008 article suggests that these devices violate the design principles of proper removable
partial denture design. However, observations and indications of these devices in use has
been somewhat successful but only if they are treated as a completely different treatment
option and are designed with a different set of principles (Kaplan, 2008). There are clearly
differing views on where the ‘Flexible Resin Denture’ fits into modern partial denture
provision.
Task
Critically appraise FRPD’s by first performing a comprehensive search of articles, reports and
commercial promotional material to compare them with conventional hard resins.
Discuss the reasons for the growing popularity of FRPD’s and aspects of them that challenge
conventional design principles.
What would encourage a clinician to prescribe a flexible resin denture?

CONTEMPORARY TRENDS IN FIXED PROSTHODONTICS
Background
A 20-year-old female patient has suffered a sporting accident that has resulted in
the loss of her upper left central incisor (FDI 21). Her remaining teeth are in good health. The dentist has requested an 'IPS e-max' all-ceramic bridge restoration.

Task
Critically appraise why e-max/press able ceramics would be the preferred choice for an anterior restoration, rather than the conventional porcelain bonded to metal crown. Explain the key concepts in the clinical preparation of the abutment teeth for an IPS e-max, all-ceramic bridge. Explain what information the dentist should provide to the laboratory for IPS e-max
crowns
Determine what alternative treatment this patient could have had as a restorative option
An aesthetic incisal translucency is required for the anterior teeth. Briefly discuss
how this can be achieved with a pressable ceramic restoration
You may use diagrams / illustrations to help answer the questions.
CONTEMPORARY TRENDS IN COMPLETE PROSTHODONTICS
Background
In recent years, the Hybrid Implant Prostheses have become more fashionable to treat
edentulous mandibles. It used to be known as an implant denture supported on a screw
retained beam. The denture can only be removed by the clinician.
Task
Discuss the technological advances that have enabled this treatment option to become more
fashionable.
The discussion is to cover the rehabilitation /provision of the prosthesis rather than details
on the surgical procedures.
Consider reasons for this treatments popularity.
