INIn October 2015, OTRS began a new and exciting

adventure we called Self-Paced Hebrew. The program was

almost two years in the making, and it came in answer to a

challenge we were having with Hebrew instruction.

When one teacher stood in front of 20+ students, trying to

teach all of them the same thing at the same time, it just wasn’t

working.

In terms of Hebrew and prayer skills, many—but not all—of

our students were in about the same place as their classmates.

But some had started OTRS a little later than their peers. Some

were regular participants in Shabbat morning programs and had a

familiarity with more prayers than others in their grade. Some had

special learning needs, or just needed a little more time to work

with Hebrew. Others found Hebrew came easily, and they were

looking for more challenges.

We want all of our students to feel they can fully participate

when they are a part of our congregation. And full participation

siddur.

We saw that we needed to improve Hebrew instruction for ev-

eryone. The inspiration came from a congregation in Boca Raton,

FL. They were running a large, multi-faceted Hebrew program

that was totally driven by each student’s individual needs. We

borrowed their organizing principle—that each student could and

should be taught based on what he or she already knew and was

ready to learn next—and built an entirely new Hebrew program

centered around that same principle.

Kerbel, an educational consultant who designed an assessment

tool for us, administered all the assessments at the beginning and

end of the year. Steve trained the teachers, and worked with me on

the curriculum. The assessment covers individual letter and vowel

recognition, decoding skills in single and multiple syllable letter/

vowel combinations, and prayer familiarity.

But once they found themselves in

what they knew, they were more willing

to try and more willing to be “wrong out

loud.”

The small groups also allowed teachers to get to know their

students better and adapt their teaching throughout the year to

meet everyone’s needs.

Reassessing the same

students with the same

tools at the end of Year 1,

we saw that almost every-

one had improved tremen-

dously, in both decoding

ability and overall attitude

to working with Hebrew.

During just about every

Sisterhood Board brainstorms new activities

On Sunday, August 6, at the annual Sisterhood Board Transition meeting, Board

members shared what Sisterhood means to each of them. This word cloud depicts their

responses. The group also brainstormed ideas for the

coming year. Some of the most popular ideas

among Board members included engaging more

women from the OT community through diverse

programming, holding more educational work-

Three years ago,

restarted the USY chapter

here at Olam Tikvah. The

three were active Kadi-

maniks in middle school

and had made friends

across the region, and

they wanted it to contin-

ue.

But OT did not have a USY chapter. So when they entered

high school, they decided to start one.

Initially they coordinated with those still in Kadima. While

having a great time at events, they talked to the middle school-

ers about how much fun they are having in USY. Some of those

Kadimaniks also attended regional activities, and when they

moved to USY they didn’t want the fun to stop, either. When they

entered high school, they joined the original members, and the

chapter began to build.

In their second year, OT’s USY chapter elected a full board
