Message of Welcome

The 15th Sakyadhita International Conference on Buddhist Women in Hong Kong celebrates thirty years of Sakyadhita’s work to benefit Buddhist women everywhere. In 1987, the founding of Sakyadhita was a landmark in Buddhist history and a starting point for great changes for women in the diverse Buddhist traditions around the world. From that time on, women from around the globe have come together, uniting our wisdom, compassion, and talents, to create new pathways for women to fulfill their dreams, our dreams. These Sakyadhita gatherings represent a new era for women in Buddhism, for it is here that we are shining light on the achievements of Buddhist women and energetically developing our potential to help relieve the sufferings of the world.

The theme of the 15th Sakyadhita Conference in Hong Kong, “Contemporary Buddhist Women: Contemplation, Cultural Exchange & Social Action,” highlights our diversity and also the many choices that Buddhist women have today. Among us, there are many different ways that we may focus our energies, such as meditation practice, active social engagement, studies, teaching, parenting, artistic expression, and a range of other options. The beauty of Buddhist women is that we come from different countries and cultures, with different interests and diverse approaches to Buddhism, yet together we represent enormous power for good in the world. We are fortunate to be able to decide for ourselves what paths we wish to take, depending on our cultural backgrounds and personal interests. With pure intentions, we can transform ourselves and make great contributions to the transformation of society.

The 15th Sakyadhita Conference in Hong Kong sets the stage for a fruitful exchange of ideas and experiences. The wide variety of perspectives we bring and the common goals and values we share are what makes this gathering so special. The theme of cultural exchange encourages us to interact with Buddhists from around the globe, to bridge youth culture and traditional culture, and to convey Buddhist concepts in the visual arts, performing arts, and even martial arts. The theme of contemplation gives us a chance to meditate together and contemplate our responsibilities as Buddhist women. The theme of social action allows us to envision a kinder, more compassionate, more enlightened world.

Sakyadhita and our partner organizations welcome you and wish you a very happy, enriching experience in Hong Kong!

Keynote Address

Strength in Diversity:Toward an Inclusive Dialogue on Social Action

Dr. Rongdao Lai 釋融道

Assistant Professor of ReligionUniversity of Southern California

While acknowledging the pressing issue of (re)presenting Buddhism in a religiously diverse world, this talk focuses on a different form of diversity — diversity within Buddhism itself. With blessings from generations of Buddhist leaders who laid the groundwork before us, we can now comfortably talk about shared Buddhist values and doctrines. But how we address our differences while remaining faithful to the fundamental principles of Buddhism is vital to the future of Buddhism as the communities of practitioners grow ever more global. In every culture that Buddhism finds a home in, there are different manifestations of devotion, interpretations of doctrines, and evolution of practices. These differences can at times be jarring and the diversity of interpretation can lead to contradiction and even conflict between communities. Buddhists in different socio-political settings and cultural environments strive to respond to a myriad of issues and challenges. Therefore, to fully recognize that we are different takes delicate sensitivity, profound respect, and consistent courage. It is also imperative that we gain a nuanced understanding of our collective and individual challenges. Wholeheartedly embracing this diversity and richness leads to creativity, empathy, strength, and truly meaningful social actions. Sakyadhita is an ideal platform for such dialogue and exchange.

Workshop Descriptions(Listed alphabetically by the title of the workshop.)

Art & MeditationDharmacharini Anagarika KiranadaThis workshop will begin with an introduction to art and meditation centering and quieting. Following this, we will chant some simple mantras or do “meditation writing” practices to “loosen our hands,” connect with line and the flow of the mantra. Next, we will engage in some drawing activities that will help us explore the old Zen instruction on drawing. The workshop will conclude with suggestions for making art part of daily life, continuing to connect with these experiences, and deepening our meditation.

Art Zen Visual: Meditation with ArtEva YuenThrough sketching flowers, participants have the chance to become more deeply in touch with their own self-understanding. They will explore how to really observe, to draw what their eyes actually see, and experience what their hearts are feeling. The completed sketch will make a statement about how one relates to the world; and bring one closer to letting go of all self-delusions, for the betterment of the mind.

A Workshop on Guqin & HealingRuoke Liu & Sirei LiGuqin is the most ancient Chinese string instrument and is regarded as a Dharma instrument that assists in cultivation of mind. The workshop will focus on quqin and healing. The renowned 2,000-year-old Chinese medical classic, Huangdi Neijing, explains the correspondences between the five elements, the five sounds of music and human emotions, for example, the liver corresponds to the wood element, jue in terms of music and anger in terms of emotion. Participants will have an opportunity to play the guqin and experience how every moment of the fingers and the sounds made contribute to their health and well-being.

Brainwave MeditationWilliam ChangBrain neurologists have verified that meditation changes brain nerve loops and is beneficial to people with ADD, ADHD, ASD, insomnia and some other mental issues. Today, brainwave technologies have consumer applications. In the workshop, Brainwave Computer Interface (BCI) will be used to help participants to conduct brainwave personality assessment. They will then experience a Brainwave Zen Lamp to learn their present emotional condition and meditation level. Lastly, Participants will also experience brainwave training to enhance attention, meditation, compassion, and creativity.

Buddhism and Healing: Contemporary Experiences and ReflectionsKin CheungIn this workshop, we will discuss the intersection between Buddhism and healing in the contemporary context. The focus will be how Buddhism currently provides people with avenues of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual healing. The facilitator and participants will share personal experiences and come up with definitions of healing and health. Then we will explicitly explore how Buddhism may add to or alter such notions. Afterwards, we will discuss how Buddhist conceptions of health tie in with karma and ethics in order to broaden our understanding of health beyond the individual level to a broader communal and environmental understanding of what it means to be healthy.

Buddhist Fundamentalism?Asoka BandarageThere are increasing accounts of aggression against religious minorities in Buddhist-majority Asian countries. It is too simple to view this as isolated “Buddhist” violence or extremism. The workshop will discuss the complexities of “religious” conflicts in these countries and explore how the Buddha’s teachings on the Middle Path can help addressing the issue, and contribute to a compassionate social justice framework helpful to Buddhist women for promoting harmonious co-existence among ethno-religious communities.

Buddhist Nuns of Sri LankaBhikkhuni Kundasale SubhagyaThis workshop will begin with an introduction to the history of Buddhist nuns in Sri Lanka. This will be followed by an interactive discussion about the roles nuns play in contemporary Sri Lankan society, a frank exchange of ideas about the problems Buddhist nuns face in Sri Lanka today, and proposals for possible solutions to those problems.

Chaos, Creativity, Spirituality and GenderRuth Richards & Ting Chuk LaiThere will be four phases of interaction in this workshop: (a) an introductory powerpoint presentation; (b) an activity that includes brief narratives, then dyads and group sharing to illustrate the importance of change and “bifurcation” in our own personal lives; (c) a fun activity with Playdough in groups of two to four people that vividly portrays our connectedness and emergent creativity, work, and play together, with discussion; and (d) a general wrap up and Q & A session for issues raised in the powerpoint. Hopefully, attendees will emerge with broader views of life, self, and our fuller potential.

Chaos Theory as BuddhadharmaRuth Richards & Ting Chuk LaiThe aim of the workshop is to nurture rich reflections, potential artistic expressions, and deep discussions among participants. The focus of the workshop is a creative dialogue between Chaos Theory and Zen Buddhism that was originally written by Stephen Muho Proskauer, who drew from classic texts that are both scientific and spiritual. The workshop will be accompanied by a series of stunning images.

Cognitively-Based Compassion TrainingTeresa I. (Teri) SivilliThis experiential workshop will explore the key components of Cognitively-Based Compassion Training (CBCT), a practice based on the premise that compassion is a trait that can be developed and cultivated. Through progressive exercises, one gains insight into how one’s attitudes and behaviors support or hinder compassionate response, and deliberately and systematically works to cultivate compassion. The exercises begin with the development of attentional stability and progress through various analytical meditations, including equanimity, interdependence, gratitude and appreciation, and empathy.

Compassionate ListeningKarma Lekshe Tsomo and Lien BuiIn this workshop, we will practice listening mindfully to others, bringing our full attention and presence to the experience, without judgment, comparison, or response. Careful, compassionate listening is a way of being fully grounded in the moment. Focusing respectfully on what our partner has to say, we are able to let go of our own stories and preconceptions. As we practice being fully present, moment to moment, we gradually become better at moving beyond our fixation on ourselves, freeing up limitless potential for the benefit of ourselves and others.

Creating Buddhist Picture BooksJuyarn TsaiStorytelling was one of the main ways the Buddha propagated his teachings. This workshop will discuss how the Buddha conveyed his liberating ideas through stories and how Buddhist practitioners can use picture books to pass on the Buddha’s wisdom. We will survey several contemporary Buddhist picture books created in Taiwan and also demonstrate how to compose Buddhist picture books. The workshop concludes with a discussion about how to compose picture books, incorporating writing, drawing, dancing, and chanting.

Dancing the Lokeshvara (Quan Yin/Avalokiteshvara) SlokaLiAnne Takeuchi HuntCharya nritya is a rare upaya or skillful method for Dharma practitioners to awaken on the path. The dance is a yogic ritual art and three-dimensional moving mandala. Practitioners engage in deity yoga practice through techniques of body, speech,

and mind. First, I will teach a short sloka or verse of devotional praise to Lokeshvara, also known as Avalokiteshvara or Quan Yin. Next, participants will explore the symbolism and form of the bodhisattva through dance. The workshop will conclude with learning the mudras and mantras of the dedication prayer. The workshop is open to beginners and all levels of physical ability.

Dharma in Drama: Facilitating Learning Buddhism with DramaJohnny SiuDrama is a mode of emotional expression that is usually represented in theatrical performances or in literature. It helps one explore thoughts, feelings, and emotions. It also allows one to communicate and understand oneself and others. This workshop will incorporate video clips from the Buddhist drama “Let Go” (by Mind at Ease (白在觀), a local Buddhist repertory theater, 2015) and the script from the Buddhist drama “The Cage “ (by Buddhist Ching Kok Secondary School, 2005) to illustrate how drama is used to promote Buddhism in local Buddhist schools.

Dharma RapRotraut (Jampa) WurstThis workshop will be an opportunity for participants from many traditions to get together and create international Buddhist rap that can be performed and shared with others. We will also draw graffiti and dance with a little bit of hip hop. These three pillars of Dharma rap (rap, graffiti and hip hop) are new ways to convey Buddhist texts and ideas.

Empty Hand – Empty Brush: A Contemplative Immersion into Brush Painting Integrated with Qi-GongKichung Lee LizeeThis workshop will present a unique blend of Asian calligraphy and Western thematic materials. Participants will learn how to sensitize themselves to their internal energy through qigong, taiqi, and free-flowing calligraphic art. Unlearning SexismKarma Lekshe TsomoThis interactive workshop will explore gender stereotypes and gendered social conditioning from a Buddhist perspective. Often, women and men alike internalize preconceptions about the nature and behavior of women and men without questioning them. Gender stereotypes thus operate both on a social level and a personal, often subconscious level. While few will admit to harboring sexist attitudes, it is hard to escape the images of the ideal woman and the ideal man that are marketed by corporations and often accepted unthinkingly. This workshop will be an opportunity to examine our own attitudes to understand more fully how sexist stereotypes may influence our thinking and behavior.

Western Buddhist Practitioners Contributing to the Gender Debate in BuddhismElizabeth SwanepoelIn the transmission of Buddhist cultures to the West, questions have been raised about sexist attitudes in both Buddhist and Western societies. Group Meditations

Peace is Every Step June 23Sister Thuan NghiemWalking meditation is one of the most relaxing practices. It can be done anywhere and anytime. This practice helps us to slow down and enjoy life in the present moment. With each step, we regain full sovereignty over our body and mind; and release our negative emotions and stress. When we walk mindfully, we become the living Dharma. People around us will feel relaxed and at ease when they see mindfulness in their environment. This is how we apply the Dharma in daily life.

Beginners Mind: An Introduction to Zazen June 24Linda RuthSitting meditation, zazen, is the heart of Zen practice. With the practice of zazen, we unify our body, breath, and mind, and open to each moment with a readiness to respond to the world. Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, a Japanese Zen master and author of Zen Mind Beginner’s Mind, said, “The beginner’s mind is the mind of compassion. When our mind is compassionate, it is boundless.” In this meditation workshop we will introduce the basic practice of zazen, the foundational sitting posture, how to adapt it to our own physical needs (including sitting on a chair), the practices of the breath and mind during zazen, and walking meditation. We will also introduce stretches and body practices that will support our meditation practice over many years. “If you start to practice zazen, you will begin to appreciate your beginner’s mind. It is the secret of Zen practice.” Shunryu Suzuki-roshi

The Benefit of Meditation June 26Jetsunma Tenzin PalmoAll beings wish for a sense of well-being rather than unhappiness, but mostly we imagine that a sense of well-being depends on outer circumstances, including other people. The Buddhadharma recognises that the main problem rests in our own mind. With the mad monkey mind in control, it is no wonder that we suffer ourselves and cause untold difficulties for others. As the Buddha said, “A well-tamed mind brings happiness.” To tame our minds, we need to develop certain skills, such as mindfulness and awareness. We need to cultivate the ability to observe what is happening inside of us and simultaneously allow the stream of consciousness to quieten down. Once we become aware of our mental activity, including how much the three poisons (attachment, aversion, and confusion) dominate our minds, then we can begin to train and transform the monkey mind into an ally on the path to enlightenment.

Meditation in Daily Life June 27Bhikkhuni Kundasale SubhagyaThe Pali word bhavana means “development” or “cultivation.” According to the Buddhist texts, it refers to practical methods of mental development. The Buddha explained that people are afflicted by both physical and mental illnesses. To become free from them, we need to become free from mental defilements. To begin, we learn to focus our attention. We practice being mindful of thoughts, feelings, and sensations, observing them in a nonjudgmental way. This practice results in greater calm and psychological balance. In this workshop, we will practice meditation to become aware of our relationship to the flow of emotions and thoughts.

“A Thousand Mothers: Buddhist Nuns in Myanmar” June 23Directed by Kim SheltonSet at an ancient nunnery above the majestic Irrawaddy River, this documentary is an unprecedented look into the lives of Buddhist nuns in Sagaing, Myanmar, an ancient religious region with one of the largest concentrations of monasticism in the world. While the choices available to girls and women in Myanmar are quite limited, the film poetically unfolds to reveal unexpected opportunity and beauty as young orphans find a refuge, an education, and a healthy environment with older nuns who have dedicated their lives to service with the wit and wisdom required to live outside the pull of their rapidly modernizing culture. The pink and orange robed nuns, ranging in age from seven to seventy, have a deep spiritual commitment to following the Buddha’s teachings as a way of life. “A Thousand Mothers” is a celebration of this unique life, and its value as a force for good in our troubled world.

“A Photographic Journey with Himalayan Nuns” June 24Directed by Dominique Butet and Olivier AdamIn 2008, we began a project to document the daily lives of Himalayan Buddhist nuns, so that more Western people could learn more about them and help them improve their living conditions. Among other issues, the question of gender equality became apparent regarding the gradual emancipation of nuns through their access to education and the progressive global change of women’s status in society. Our journey led us to Dharamsala, Zangskar, Spiti, Nepal, Bhutan, and then to South India, where H.H. the Dalai Lama was awarding the geshema degree to twenty nuns, beginning a new chapter in Tibetan Buddhist history. This workshop is a visual presentation of this project, followed by discussion.

“Blessings: The Tsoknyi Nangchen Nuns of Tibet” June 25Directed by Victress HitchcockIn Tibet, the word for woman translates as “lower rebirth.” In a remote eastern region of the country, the Tsoknyi Nangchen nuns defy this definition. Devoted to the ancient practices of Tibetan Buddhism – once primarily a male domain – over 3,000 nuns have attained elevated status. The film explains the Tibetan Buddhist monastic system and the changing role of women within it, incorporating historic black-and-white footage from the 1960s Cultural Revolution of the People’s Republic of China, when all forty Nangchen nunneries were destroyed. Many of the nuns were imprisoned in work camps; others scattered back to their nomadic families. A few survivors hid in caves until, years later, they surfaced to rebuild the nunneries, stone by stone. Elders who kept the yogic tradition alive now teach it to young women.

“Amongst White Clouds” June 26Directed by Edward A. BurgerThis documentary takes us on an unforgettable journey into the hidden lives of China’s forgotten Zen Buddhist hermit tradition. The Zhongnan Mountains have been home to recluses since the time of the Yellow Emperor, some five thousand years ago. Many of China’s most realized Buddhist masters attained enlightenment in this mountain range. With humor and compassion, this film reveals the wisdom, hardships, and joys in the everyday lives of the inspiring and warm-hearted characters who pursue enlightenment there today.

“Windhorse” June 27Directed by Paul WagnerA remarkable film produced under remarkable conditions, Windhorse is the tale of a young Tibetan singer named Dolkar who is a rising star on the nightclub circuit, her aimless and unemployed brother Dorjee, and their cousin Pema, a nun who is imprisoned for her religious beliefs. The story embraces three generations of Tibetans who have immigrated to Lhasa from their mountain village. The years have completely urbanized the traditional family and eroded their ties. The film is an insightful portrayal of the erosion and persistence of Tibet’s ancient Buddhist cultural values.

June 26, 2017Dhamma Talk: Nourishing a Healthy Heart in Modern SocietyDaw Yuzana NyaniThe word “health” embraces physical fitness and mental well-being. In an age of technological innovation and living up to heightened expectations, people tend to become afflicted with tension, worry, depression, hatred, jealousy, cruelty, and so on. The discussion focuses on how a healthy heart can be nourished by cultivating the perfect antidotes: loving kindness (mettā), compassion (karunā), appreciative joy (muditā), and equanimity (upekkhā) – best known as the “divine abidings,” or brahmavihāra qualities. These qualities are universal and highly relevant to modern society, because they are designed to eliminate tension, create peace in social conflicts, and build a harmonious society.
