Race Directors Foreword

Welcome to the 2013 edition of the Tour of Omagh. Now in its fourth year, the race is

going from strength to strength thanks to the direction of Omagh Wheelers stalwart

Mark McAleer, and to the many volunteers connected to Omagh Wheelers Cycling Club.

This special race gives A4 riders the opportunity to experience the demands and

challenges of a three day event, which provides real competitive racing, and an

excellent environment for riders to gain experience and develop. The demands of a

three-day event is very different to a normal one-day race, as not only do riders have to

try and recover before the demands of the next stage, but you also have a mixture of

cycling disciplines to contend with: a time-trial stage which will benefit those strong

against the clock, a King of the Hills (KOH) competition for the climbers, and a Sprints

competition for riders with a Cavendish-style kick. There is also a competition for the

Best Overall Rider and Team which requires every rider to keep riding to the line for

those vital seconds. New in 2013 is a Combativity competition which rewards the most

aggressive rider, and a separate Woman’s race.

The Tour of Omagh will take place on public roads, and although we will have marshals

in place to ensure the safety of participants, I would remind all officials, drivers, and

riders to obey the rules of the road and use common sense! Please respect event

marshals who are in place to ensure a safe event, and also please respect other road

users. Cyclists are privileged to have use of our public roads for such events, it’s

important to respect this to ensure the future of our sport.

Race Information

The event will have two neutral service vehicles and a broom wagon. Each team is

expected to supply one pair of wheels. Wheels should be collected from service

immediately after each stage.

Each road stage begins with a neutralized section. It is important the whole race

remains compact during neutralization, and that team cars get in place as quickly

and safely as possible.

The TT will take place on a closed road.

Sign on for stages 1, 2 and 4 will take place at Race HQ (SilverBirch Hotel). Food and

refreshments will be provided for riders at Race HQ after stages 3 and 4. Food will

only be available for race officials, team manager, driver and riders. Food will only

be provided to those with a wrist-band, which will be provided before Stage 1.

Race Regulations

The event will be run under the regulations of Cycling Ireland, supplemented by the

following:

1. All personnel must "sign on" at the start, including team managers/drivers.

2. All team drivers must hold a current Cycling Ireland licence, and produce this to the

Commissaire at sign-on.

3. All team managers must attend the Managers meeting on Friday night @ 17:45.

4. Participants in the event are responsible for all expenditure and costs arising in

relation to the race and for any offences or damages caused. Entry to the event

implies acceptance of these Race Regulations. The only exceptions will be by specific

arrangements with the Race Organisation. Any loss or damage to radios used in the

race is the liability of the team or individual who signs for it. It is recommended that

the equipment is put away safely when not in use.

5. Jersey presentations will take place 10 minutes before the start of stages 2 and 4.

6. Team classification will be calculated on the first three riders of a team. Where a club

is unable to muster a full team, the Organisers will consider composite teams and

entries from individuals. Teams must each wear identical jerseys. Where a club

enters multiple teams, members of such teams are not interchangeable.

7. Riders competing for a club team other than their registered club must have a letter

of release from their registered club and this must be made available to the Chief

Commissaire no later than the sign on for stage one.

8. The race is run on roads open to the public. All involved, riders, marshals, team

drivers - must take due care at all times. Take proper notice of directions given by

marshals and the PSNI.

9. All team cars are to take up race formation 10 minutes before the start of stages 1,

2 and 4. Team cars must have approval from of the Commissaires if they wish to

move in the Cavalcade.

10. Race communication will be via radio on the ‘Cycling Ireland’ frequency. Radio’s can

be hired from the Race organizers at a cost of £10each. Clubs are responsible for the

safe return of all equipment.

11. The transmission of radio messages is reserved to the Commissaires, and the race

organisation. Team managers are forbidden to transmit, unless their advice is asked

for, or the matter is important and urgent.

12. Licences submitted at the initial sign on may be retained by the Race organisation

and returned when each rider gives back all his race numbers, either on retirement

or at the end of the event.

13. King of the Hills (KOH) points are as follows:

Cat 1: 8- 6- 4- 2- 1

Cat 2: 5- 3- 2- 1

Cat 3: 3- 2- 1

14. Sprints points are available on every stage finish and bonus sprint. Points are

awarded as follows:

Stage finish: 6 – 4 - 2

Bonus sprints: 3 – 2 – 1.

15. Cycling Ireland points will be award as follows:

Stage 1: 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1

Stage 2: 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1

Stage 3: 3-2-1

Stage 4: 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1

Final GC: 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1

16. A separate women’s race will run in support of the main event. The women’s race will

start with an allocated time before the main race and have a separate race leader on

general classification. As this is a separate race, women riders will not qualify for the

KOH, Points or Combativity competitions.

17. The Combativity competition is designed to reward the most aggressive rider of the

race. A judging panel consisting of the Race Director, Race Organiser, and

Commissaires will award points on stages 1, 2 & 4 in the format of 6 – 4 - 2. At the

end of the race, the rider with the most points wins, but the rider must finish the

race.
