BrettYoung™ will be introducing TruFlex™ canola with Roundup Ready® Technology for the 2020 growing season. These two new varieties will feature the unique high-performance genetics you expect from BrettYoung canola with enhanced flexibility and weed control. Watch for them in trials this summer and look for additional details later this fall. These new varieties will complement our existing lineup of top performing Roundup Ready® canola varieties with the proven performance of 6074 RR and 6090 RR, which boasts Clubroot protection and is well suited to direct harvest systems. BrettYoung’s new ClearField® canola variety, BY 5105 CL*, showcases an industry first – Clubroot protection coupled with high-yielding genetics (105%**).

Our Elite® soybean lineup continues to advance with several new varieties, providing growers with a diverse range of products that are tailored to fit the specific needs of most farms. A highlight is the introduction of the new soybean variety Amirani R2, which delivers ultra-early maturity (000.5 RM) with high yields and the unique pod height advantage Elite soybeans are known for. This follows on the high performance experienced by growers with products introduced in 2019 like Karpo R2 (00.2 RM), Sunna R2X (00.3 RM) and Vidar R2X (00.8 RM). These Elite

soybean varieties are quickly growing in popularity because of the strong yields and solid agronomics package they deliver.

Lastly, we’re proud to announce BrettYoung has been recognized with the “Canada’s Best Managed Companies” designation for the second consecutive year. The award, which focuses on Canadian-owned and managed companies, is especially gratifying because it recognizes overall business performance and the efforts of an entire organization. In turn, we want to thank all customers, the long-time loyal and the new, for trusting in BrettYoung and the products we represent. We know we need to work hard to earn your business every year and our goal is to meet or exceed your expectations every time.

2019 Canola Trial Sites

BrettYoung continues to introduce and deliver improved, high-yielding canola hybrids . The BCT program showcases

new BrettYoung material for growers to see for themselves the variety’s growth and maturity characteristics and local

yield potential . BCTs also serve to generate comparative yield data to other leading competitive products . Two of

our latest products, 6090 RR and 4187 RR, show a high-yield potential similar to 6074 RR, with the added benefit of

Clubroot resistance .

Also, because specific BrettYoung canola varieties are recommended for use in direct-harvest systems (6090 RR and

5545 CL), the 2019 BCTs will generate data using conventional (swathed) and direct-harvest management at select

locations across Western Canada .

DL Seeds is our canola breeding partner and the

source of our high-performance, industry-leading

6074 RR and 6090 RR. DL Seeds’ focus on canola is

second to none. It includes a large trial network

across Western Canada and the Northern United

States, with over 20 trial sites in Canada alone, all

testing top-performing canola hybrids for the

North American market. DL Seeds continues to

increase its breeding capacity to deliver the

bottom line impact that Canadian farmers are

looking for in a profitable canola hybrid variety.

The DL Seeds head office is located in Morden,

Manitoba, with greenhouses and a pathology and

gene marker lab located at BrettYoung’s Winnipeg

facility, plus satellite locations in Saskatoon and

Edmonton. A closer look at DL Seeds reveals that

there is much more than just the Canadian-based

operations. DL Seeds’ two German-based parents

– DSV and NPZ Lembke – currently with more than

600 staff, are long-standing canola and winter

oilseed rape breeding companies in the highly

competitive European marketplace.

Both DSV and NPZ Lembke were involved in these

crops right from the start of their development in

the mid-70s. Today, they have the number one

combined market share position in the

approximately 22-million-acre European Union

and Commonwealth of Independent States’

spring canola and winter oilseed rape markets. At

home in Germany, their combined market share is

close to 50%.

DL Seeds – along with its parent companies – is

truly a global oilseed breeding powerhouse, with

more than 15 oilseed/canola breeders operating

in North America, Europe and Australia. The

breeding program has unrivalled access to diverse

germplasm that year after year produces new

high-yielding canola varieties with leading

Blackleg resistance and excellent tolerance to

other diseases like Clubroot (including 5x

pathotype), and now Sclerotinia.

This continued investment in people and

technology keeps DL Seeds in the forefront

of canola breeding in North America.

DefendR Sclerotinia

For growers wanting to further reduce the impact of this

disease, BrettYoung’s DefendR Sclerotinia tolerance trait

is built-in on both the 6074 RR and 6076 CR hybrids .

Screening and testing results for both of these varieties

demonstrate improved tolerance superior to susceptible

checks using industry-approved testing protocol .

The DefendR trait in 6074 RR and 6076 CR provides

Sclerotinia tolerance at levels that will:

• Reduce the impacts of infection and reduce yield loss

whenever disease pressure is present

• Allow for greater flexibility in fungicide application

timing when flowering is uneven and staggered, which

otherwise makes fungicide application timing difficult

• Reduce the impact of Sclerotinia in long-flowering crops

where the window of fungicide protection has lapsed

DefendR is reserved for use only on BrettYoung

varieties that deliver above industry-average levels of

genetic resistance or tolerance to one or more of the

prominent canola diseases .

It is our nod to the strength of the breeding

program with our primary canola partner, DL Seeds,

DefendR Blackleg

Blackleg is back in the spotlight as a disease that is

evolving and making a strong resurgence in intensive

canola production areas . Most agree that managing

this disease requires a combination of rotation, crop

management (including regular field scouting) and proper

variety selection as important factors to reducing the

impact of this disease .

The DefendR Blackleg trait means the BrettYoung canola

variety is rated as a strong R for Blackleg resistance . It also

means that the variety incorporates multiple major genes

to defend against multiple strains of Blackleg . DefendR

Blackleg varieties achieve a broader level of resistance

compared to competitive R-rated varieties that have either

no, or only one, major gene for Blackleg resistance .

DefendR Clubroot

Previously considered primarily a Central Alberta issue,

Clubroot has now been identified in all three Prairie

provinces . In 2013, a new Clubroot pathotype was

identified in Alberta as the canola varieties, up to that

time thought to be Clubroot resistant, were exhibiting

high levels of infection . New pathotypes have since been

identified in several areas .

The DefendR Clubroot trait is resistant to pathotypes

2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 3A, 3H and 5X . BrettYoung will continue to

commercialize DefendR-rated Clubroot resistant genetics

coupled to high-yielding, high-performance varieties .

and a promise to canola growers that they are

purchasing a variety that has leading genetics

for disease management in a canola hybrid with

exceptional yield potential .

BrettYoung is proud to support the DefendR trait platform as part of an active disease management strategy . The DefendR designation is used to signal exceptional genetic resistance or tolerance to the big three disease complexes affecting canola: Sclerotinia, Clubroot and Blackleg .

CLUBROOT MANAGEMENT CLUBROOT MANAGEMENT

Clubroot (CR) is a potentially costly canola disease that

growers in Western Canada need to be aware of and

understand the implications of when located in the CR

areas of Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan . New

pathotypes are present in the intensive CR areas of

Alberta where the disease was first identified in Western

Canada and the latest research confirms continued

spread of the disease throughout the canola growing

areas of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and North Dakota .

Depending on location, there are two levels of CR

management emerging and at the forefront of concerns for

growers, retailers, distributors and canola breeders . Growers

in the intensive CR areas of Alberta must now consider

the likelihood of any new pathotypes being encountered

and requiring closer management . For growers in the

rest of CR infested areas of the Prairies, the spread of CR

is quickly becoming a concern and many growers are

now, for the first time, considering the CR resistance

profile of a product in their variety selection decisions .

New Pathotype IdentificationThe discovery of new pathotypes in the intensive CR

areas of Alberta that are capable of overcoming the

resistance of the first-generation CR resistant varieties

generated a significant amount of research in the

characterization of these new pathotypes and the

identification of new sources of genetic resistance . One

of the results of this research is the development of the

Canadian Clubroot Differential (CCD) set . It consists of 13

brassica hosts capable of differentiating 17 CR

pathotypes into the newly identified groups: 3A, 2B, 5C,

3D, 8E, 2F, 5G, 3H, 5I, 8J, 5K, 5L, 6M, 8N, 3O, 8P and

5X . The previously used Williams differential set

differentiated only five pathotype groups: 2, 3, 5, 6 and 8 .

Pathotypes of Concern: 5X, 3A and 3H and Their Distribution

The initial resistance failure was identified as a variant in

pathotype 5 . It was labelled 5X and it has retained this

name in the expanded CCD set . The identification of

new CR pathotypes over the last number of years shows

the most significant strain, in terms of numbers of fields

being affected, is a variant of the previous pathotype 3,

now identified as 3A in the new CCD set . The old

pathotype 3, now referred to as 3H, is still the

predominant pathotype being found outside the 3A risk

area around Edmonton . To date, pathotypes found in

Manitoba, Saskatchewan and many parts of Alberta are

believed to be primarily pathotype 3H and can be

managed by the varieties with first generation resistance

to pathotypes 2, 3, 5, 6 and 8 under the Williams

differential set .

New Pathotypes Capable of Overcoming Genetic Resistance to 2, 3, 5, 6 and 8Several new pathotypes such as 3A, 3D and 8E are being

reported as overcoming the first generation genetic

resistance present in many commercial varieties . The 3A

pathotype, however, is by far the most frequently

reported CR pathotype where varieties are showing

susceptibility . These new pathotypes are so far primarily

a concern only for growers around the Edmonton area

(see distribution map, Fig . 1) .

BrettYoung’s 6076 CR: Broad Resistance with a Multigenic ApproachConcurrent with the identification of new pathotypes,

breeders have been identifying and incorporating new

sources of resistance into new canola hybrids . This

includes the stacking of multiple, major gene

(multigenic) sources of resistance to CR in some varieties

like 6076 CR . This variety has resistance to the older

pathotypes that were first identified in the Prairies (2F,

3H, 5I, 6M and 8N) but also to the newer pathotypes

including: 3A, 2B, 3D, 8E, 5G, 5K, 3O and 5X .

Recommendations for growers remain focused on:• Scout fields to detect presence of disease symptoms

• Soil test to detect presence of the pathogen spores

• Field sanitation

• Crop rotation to reduce spore load in soil

• Weed control in rotation crops to remove canola

volunteers and other CR host plants

• Use of resistant hybrids in areas at risk of the disease

prior to infestation to delay the accumulation of spore

loads required to cause symptoms

• Use resistant hybrids with three-year rotations in fields

with high levels of infestation

• Growers in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and other areas

not impacted by pathotype 3A can prevent the

accumulation of spores for as long as possible by

using resistant varieties such as 6090 RR (resistant to

pathotypes 2, 3, 5, 6, 8 and 3H) and 4187 RR (resistant

to pathotypes 2, 3, 5, 6 and 8)

• 6076 CR is CR resistant to pathotypes 2, 3, 5, 6, 8

including resistance to 3H, 3A and 5X pathotypes

BLACKLEG MANAGEMENT

BrettYoung Blackleg DefendR VarietiesBrettYoung’s portfolio of canola products provides

industry-leading, genetic-based defense through our

DefendR Blackleg system – allowing growers to identify

several high-yielding varieties suited to your operation

and to optimize Blackleg management .

Management Through KnowledgeThe key to managing Blackleg on your farm each year is

through first scouting your fields prior to harvest,

assessing the level of incidence and developing an

estimate of Blackleg risk .

The primary tool against Blackleg is genetic-based

resistance . Canola varieties protect themselves against

Blackleg by using two types of genetic resistance that

work together to either block the disease infection at

early stages or slow the development of the disease in

later growth stages .

The two types of Blackleg resistance are:

• Adult Plant, quantitative or minor gene resistance

– This involves many genes working together to slow

the development of the disease in the plant

• Major Gene, qualitative or cotyledon resistance

– Single genes that are race specific and highly

effective at blocking infection by specific Blackleg

pathotypes (races) at early growth stages

The next most important tool for Blackleg management

is rotation . Blackleg overwinters on infected stubble,

which is the primary source of inoculum in subsequent

canola crops . The Canola Council of Canada (CCC)

recommends a minimum of three years between canola

crops to allow for break-down of stubble to reduce the

disease inoculum level . Controlling volunteer canola and

host weeds in off-years is also an important part of

rotation management .

The use of early in-season fungicides can help manage

Blackleg . However, fungicides serve as a protectant – to

have any impact, they must be applied before the

development of the disease .

A New Blackleg Resistance Identification SystemThe CCC has introduced a new resistance classification

system (see www .blackleg .ca) that uses both the current

rating system (i .e . R or MR) plus a new Major Resistance

Gene classification system .

The Major Resistance Gene classification adds a letter to

the standard rating to qualify a variety’s resistance to

specific pathotypes according to the following table:

Major Blackleg Resistance Genes in Canola Varieties

Major Resistance Gene Grouping Blackleg Race

Resistance A Rlm1 or LepR3

Resistance B Rlm2

Resistance C Rlm3

Resistance D LepR1

Resistance E1 Rlm4

Resistance E2 Rlm7

Resistance F Rlm9

Resistance G RlmS

Resistance H LepR2

X Unknown

Managing Blackleg using information from this new system

is about risk assessment and variety selection management

based on the risk assessment .

Major gene resistance is effective but is specific to a

Blackleg pathotype . Just as overuse of herbicides with the

same mode of action can cause herbicide resistance in

weeds, repeated use of the same variety (or major gene

resistance group) can lead to intense selection pressure for

different Blackleg pathotypes . Ultimately, this may lead to

erosion of the resistance provided by that specific Blackleg

gene . The major gene identification system allows growers

and agronomists to identify the specific genes present in a

canola variety .

New tools are available for growers to better understand

the race pressure they are facing in fields experiencing

high levels of Blackleg . A test of infected straw has been

developed by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and is

available as a fee-for-service test from several labs . This

test will identify the predominant races of Blackleg

present in your canola crop . The test is based on the

isolation and culture of the disease from the infected

straw and the use of DNA procedures to identify the

specific pathogen races present .

Testing straw in severely infected fields will allow you

to select varieties with major gene profiles that, in

conjunction with good adult plant resistance, will give you

the best chance to manage the disease in subsequent

canola crops .

We recommend that you contact one of the labs for a

better understanding of the sampling procedures, testing

methods and results . The labs which provide testing are

20/20 Seed Labs Inc ., BioVision Seed Labs and Discovery

Seed Labs . Major gene resistance, along with adult plant

resistance, is the sum of the genetic resistance available in

a variety . Good management decisions when disease risk

levels are high include the rotation of varieties to a

different resistance profile to help reduce the risk of

resistance erosion . In situations of low to moderate risk,

variety rotation is likely not necessary .

Applying This New Information to Your Farm Growers at high risk of Blackleg infection due to short

rotations, or growers who have already observed an

increased level of incidence based on field scouting

observations in previous years, should consider rotating

resistance profiles . That means choosing a variety that has a

different major gene group(s) from the one previously

grown, i .e . R-C to R-CE . If a grower has lab results indicating

the predominant pathogen races in their field, they should

choose varieties that have genetic resistance to these

races, if available . If not available, changing to a variety

with a different genetic makeup of adult plant resistance

and major gene resistance group(s) is likely the best option .

The DefendR Blackleg disease protection system means

unique germplasm that offers (in both RoundUp Ready®

and Clearfield® systems) different Blackleg resistance

backgrounds with a range of adult plant resistance genes

and combinations of major genes to effectively block

Blackleg at early infection . The DefendR portfolio gives

growers the choice to manage Blackleg and steward

resistance traits effectively .

Recommendations on Major Gene Rotation

Blackleg risk level Canola rotation history

Incidence (% of plants infected in last canola crop)

Recommendations

Low 3 – 4 years Less than 5%

• Changes may not be necessary• Consider changing variety resistance profile if you are considering shortening

your rotation• Control volunteers and host weeds in rotation crops

Medium 2 – 3 years 5 to 20%

• Consider changing to a variety that has a different resistance profile• Consider increasing the length of your rotation• Consider using a fungicide at early stages• Control all volunteers and host weeds in rotation crops

High 2 years or less Greater than 20%

• Change to a variety with a different resistance profile• Lengthen your crop rotation• Use early application of fungicide to reduce inoculum

buildup (highest benefit is on susceptible varieties)• Control volunteers and host weeds in rotation crops

TruFlex™ Canola with Roundup Ready® TechnologyDominate Your Field

One of the smartest routes to high yield potential is through effective weed control – but

you already know that . Here’s how TruFlex canola with Roundup Ready® Technology can

help make it happen:

• Improved Control of Tough Weeds

The flexibility of the TruFlex canola system allows for the control of harder-to-kill weeds like cleavers, foxtail barley and wild

buckwheat . It also helps enable season-long dandelion control .

• Flexibility in Spray Rates and Timing

TruFlex canola has a wider application window than our current technology . If weather or a late flush of weeds delays your

spray date, no problem – you can spray up to first flower when applying sequential rates of 0 .67 L/ac . The TruFlex canola

system also enables flexibility with your Roundup WeatherMAX® herbicide application rate to help get the job done .

• High Yield Potential Through Genetics and Crop Safety

New genetics have packed a lot of yield potential into each TruFlex canola seed . New advances in trait technology help

enable better weed control and crop safety compared to Roundup Ready canola . It’s a combination that could give you

the opportunity to see much more yield potential pass through the combine at harvest time .

Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® SystemMinimize Weeds, Maximize Yields .Built on the high-yielding Roundup Ready 2 Yield®

soybean technology, Roundup Ready 2 Xtend®

soybeans are the industry’s first biotech-stacked

soybean trait with both dicamba and glyphosate

herbicide tolerance .

With tolerance to glyphosate and dicamba,

farmers will have access to additional tools to

help control tough-to-manage broadleaf weeds .

The technology offers the yield and quality

potential that farmers already know and trust from

their Roundup Ready 2 Yield® soybeans .

Benefits• Employing multiple modes of action to control

the same weed spectrum is part of a good weed

resistance management strategy . Roundup

Ready 2 Xtend® soybeans are tolerant to both

dicamba (Group 4) and glyphosate (Group 9),

and are intended to provide soybean growers

with the option of applying Roundup

WeatherMAX® herbicide (glyphosate) and

dicamba for maximum weed control .

• The residual activity of dicamba may reduce

early weed competition and improve late-

season control, supporting higher yields and

cleaner fields at harvest .

When and where to use Recover PO4

Recover PO4 may always be applied to the seed as part of your overall phosphate fertility program planning .

1 . Use Recover PO4 where soil tests show low to medium levels of available phosphate .

• If soil tests recommend 10 to 15 lbs/acre of phosphate – just use Recover PO4

• If soil tests recommend 16 to 25 lbs/acre of phosphate – apply the lower amount of recommended phosphate

and use Recover PO4

2 . Use Recover PO4 in fields with high pH and high calcium levels . These soils will more readily tie-up phosphate, so

there is more available to be released for crop uptake .

3 . Use Recover PO4 to reduce the amount of seed-placed phosphate to avoid any potential seedling damage from

seed-placed phosphate applications .

• Phosphate solubilizer with same

active ingredient as JumpStart®

(Penicillium bilaii)

• Convenient liquid formulation

• Active ingredient makes soil and fertilizer

phosphate more plant-available

• Enhances early vigour, increases root

growth and leaf surface area

Benefits of Seed ProductionForage and turf seed production is an excellent way to

get a head start on next year’s seeding, diversify your

risk and add some profitable cropping options to your

rotation . Forage and turf seed markets have been stable

with consistent demand and good prices .

In addition to being some of the more consistently

profitable cropping options available to western

Canadian growers, turf and forage seed production also

provides agronomic benefits for your farm .

Agronomic BenefitsTurf Seed Production

• Early harvest splits up fall workload

• Increases organic matter, helps improve less productive or marginal soils

• Some species have tolerance to salinity, alkalinity and acidity

• Break-crop effect of grasses will benefit following annual crops

Legume Seed Production

• Improves soil tilth

• Low input user

• Nitrogen fixation

• Break-crop effect of legumes will benefit following annual crops

Economic BenefitsCompared to other commodity crops, forage and turf

seed production has an excellent profitability track

record . It has consistently penciled out as a lucrative

option for western Canadian growers . Furthermore,

prices for turf seed crops such as perennial ryegrass,

annual ryegrass, creeping red fescue and tall fescue

have continued to increase in recent years . Many of

BrettYoung’s seed production contracts allow growers to

lock in these high price levels and do not limit upside,

which can really help add to a farm’s bottom line .
