Glen Philbrick is theAccounting and Financeinstructor at United TribesTechnical College in Bismarckbut he is also a farmer who isexcited about the prospect ofbringing two ancient crops fromSouth America to NorthDakota.
The Minot State graduatelives on his family’s farm nearTurtle Lake, not too far fromthe Audubon National WildlifeRefuge.
Recently this enterprisingyoung farmer has been experi-menting with two crops, in facthis is one of only two farms inthe state to attempt producingquinoa and amaranth.Bolstered (and financed) bygrants like the Leadershp inLocal Foods Grant, the Grant toGrow Seed Initiative and aUSDA Specialty Crop BlockGrant Philbrick is growing andstudying the market viability ofthese two unusual crops.
This past August Philbrickhosted a field day to show theviability of quinoa and ama-ranth in central North Dakota.
The following is taken fromthe poster prepared for theNorthern Plains SustainableAgriculture Society (NPSAS)held in late January where healso presented the results of hisexperimentation.
Introduction“The demand for gluten free
food has increased the price ofquinoa and amaranth, thus cre-ating a potential for small scaleNorth Dakota farmers to total-ly integrate the production andmarketing of quinoa and ama-ranth. Key factors limitingquinoa production for Northdakota are: variety selection, field equipment suitable forplanting and harvesting, andmarketing.

pseudo cereals, whcih meansthe plant produce fruits andseeds used as flour but are notof the grass family. Quinoa isthe food of the Incas. Amaranthis the food of the Aztecs. Bothhad been in use for over 5,000years. Today most of what isused in USA is imported fromSouth America.

By Glen PhilbrickQuinoa (pronounced keen-
wa) is part of the ragweed(lambsquarter) family andlooks identical to ragweeduntil about a foot tall. Quinoahas been grown for thousandsof years in Peru and Bolivia.
Amaranth is a relative ofpigweed but can easily be dis-tinguished by color as you willsee in photos. Amaranth wasthe staple food of the Aztecsuntil the Spaniards decided towipe it out in an effort to con-trol the population.
Both crops are gluten free, provided a locally grown alter-native for those who need ordesire gluten free foods.
Challenges growing boothcrops are finding equipmentto plant seeds the size of sweetclover. Grain drills are set up
for this but not for row cropswhich both are. I modified ahomemade corn planter toplant both crops. If theground is not thoroughly pre-pared through tillage, theseed will not germinate.
Weeds are a challenge too.I cultivated with a row cropcultivator twice. Once theplants get about 20 inches tallthey are able to compete.
Both crops cannot handleherbicide and will die ifapplied.
Both crops can be com-bined. We are still learningwhat the air settings shouldbe. The difference betweenplugging and blowing seed outthe back end is 50 pointswhen it comes to the air set-ting.
