Mano Cup Day - Tuesday 1st November - On Tuesday, with wonderful parental support, our students dressed up with a Mano Cup (Melbourne Cup) theme. We had horses, jockeys, bookies, formal outfits and more, all on show as students participated in a whole school parade. It was a pity that the weather spoilt our planned picnic lunch on the oval but over 300 students took up the special canteen lunch menu offer on the day. On Monday at assembly, we will announce some special awards for the ‘best costumes / outfits’. Music Count us in - Today at 12.30pm our students joined over 500,000 students in over 2,000 schools across Australia to sing along with the 10

th ‘Music Count Us In’

event – which is now in its 10th year. The song this year ‘Let

it play’, was created by four students from around Australia who were selected to work with MCUI Program Ambassador John Foreman OAM and Program Mentor Jay Laga’aia. Walkathon TOMORROW - The annual Walkathon is on tomorrow, Friday November 4

th, and the weather forecast

looks perfect. Thank you in advance to the parents who have offered to help this big event. We hope students have been able to secure some supportive sponsors and also remember to wear an item of ‘Funky Fluro’ on the day. Parents are encouraged to remind students that as they are escorted around the route and cross streets, that they do so with great care and follow the teachers directions. ‘Step up session’ for students – Thursday November 10

th - In readiness for 2017, on this day, we are organising a

‘step up session’ for all current students. Between 11.30am and 1.30pm students will move up into their 2017 Grade levels, to help prepare for the new school year (now with only 6 weeks of the school year remaining!). Whilst we have not yet finalised student groupings and teacher positions for 2017, this is still a valuable exercise. It will be followed up in December with another such session, in confirmed class groupings with 2017 confirmed teachers in their 2017 classrooms. Thank you to parents who have shared in confidence, requests for 2017 arrangements. On Thursday November 10

th we will welcome back our 2017 Preps for their third

transition visit, which will be followed up that night with a Parent Information evening starting at 6.45pm in the Prep rooms. Prep - Junior Sport Day next week - At Peter Lowe Reserve on Tuesday November 8

th between 11am and

1.30pm students in these communities will participate in a range of fun sporting activities. We hope this compliments our weekly PE program and introduces students to activities which relate to future athletics events, offered in later Grade levels (Middles and Seniors). Mathletics and Reading Eggs - Are you using these regularly at home? Access to these wonderful online programs is paid for via your school fees and allows for students (and other family members) to have fun, some competition at times, to problem solve, to revisit existing skills and to challenge themselves re new learnings. This is an excellent way for families to participate in literacy and numeracy learning together and can be the most enjoyable homework experience! Barry Rowland Principal

Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) 2017 CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover to costs of school excursions, camps and sporting activities. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child. Parents or legal guardians are required to complete a CSEF application form and lodge it with the Office for processing. Application forms should be completed and lodged with schools by 3rd March 2017, as payments are made from March. However schools will be able to accept and process applications up until the end of term two each year. Contact the office to obtain a CSEF application form or download from www.education.vic.gov.au/csef. Please ensure a copy of your means-tested concession card is provided with your CSEF application form. If you were eligible and received CSEF in 2016 please ensure a new application form is completed for 2017 prior to 3rd March 2017. Jessie Burney, Business Manager

Bike Education News Over the past two weeks the Grade 4 students have participated in Bike Education. They have been practising lots of slow control skills to ensure they’re safe riders in public. I would love to thank all the parents who volunteered their time to come along and help. We would not be able to run this program without our valuable help. Also a massive thank you to Paul Eltringham who organised a professional from Bike FO (Bike Factory Outlet) in Belmont to come and make sure the bikes were in good working order. We were extremely lucky to have this happen and I cannot thank both of them enough.

Remembrance Day - 11/11/16 Next Friday, the entire Mano community will come together for a special assembly to recognize Remembrance Day; this year, marking the 98th anniversary of the Armistice (or truce) which ended the First World War in 1918. Students will gather in the multi-purpose room at 10:45am, concluding with a minutes silence at 11:00am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. All are welcome to attend.

If you are picking a student up from school, please ensure that you are safely crossing the road WITH your student and not calling them across the road in front of heavy traffic. Chaplain’s Corner - M&M club (Milo & Mindfulness) Starting this Monday the 7th of November at 8:30am, and every following Monday, we’ll be running the M&M club in the Prep building. M&M stands for Milo and Mindfulness. All students are invited to drop in from 8:30am onwards to have a cup of Milo and join in some mindfulness activities which will be held in the prep building. The M&M club is a great way to have a positive and calm start to the school week. The M&M club provides companionship, a relaxing and safe environment as well as non-stressful school start. If your child/children struggle attending school or entering the classroom, the M&M club is designed to help your child/children calm down before school starts. Come any time between 8:30-9:00am and de-stress the school drop off for you and your child/children. M&M club is designed to assist the young people at Mano deal with the stress, pressure and challenges of school and daily life. Milo is a great start to any day! Also, Mindfulness helps us look after our mind, and build mental health and wellbeing, through positive interactions, activities, exercises and environment. If this is something you would like to do yourself, or at home with your family, I highly recommend Smiling Minds. For any questions, concerns or if you just would like to have a chat or have a great idea please come talk to the chaplain. The chaplain is available Monday to Tuesday, 8:30-4:00pm. I look forward to getting to know you and your family and supporting your child/children through their time at Mano. The M&M club, Mondays at 8:30am onwards, Prep Building! Sincerely, Jesse Winter

Library News Seniors The stunning books of Shaun Tan have been the topic of the month in Library for our Seniors. They have used the Harvard Visib le Thinking routine of “See, Think, Wonder” to explore the artwork and themes of these complex and engaging texts, and have viewed and discussed the Academy Award-winning short film of Tan’s “The Lost Thing”. What a great opportunity to explore the work of this incredible Australian author and artist. Preps Preps have enjoyed exploring the books of Pamela Allen through dramatic play and craft this term. We had great fun dressing up as Belinda the cow and Old Tom the farmer to re-enact the humorous story of “Belinda”. It has been wonderful to see the growing confidence of the Preps as they perform for their peers and there are certainly some budding future actors out there! Preps have also enjoyed making clay people as a response to the story “The Potato People”. The Preps have become very good at commenting on Pamela Allen’s illustration and writing style, such as her cheeky drawings and her funny rhymes! Great new reads There are some great new books in, with the latest Dr Seuss pet themed books and computer coding and gaming books proving popular. We have also got our hands on the latest Aaron Blabey Bad Guys book, “Episode 4: Apocalypse Meow” – hilarious! – so get in to the Library and get borrowing! Happy Reading all! Jo Eddey and Sue Bencic (Librarians)
