LIVE THE LITURGY

Before the arrival of GPS and other technological advances, folks relied on a compass to assist them with directions. If set and used properly, people who would otherwise be lost could find their way. What properly sets our God compass? We know that we require God in order to find our way through life, but we need to be in proper relationship with God before this can effectively happen. God certainly does not need to be placated, but some things open Him up to us more than others. Isaiah gives us a clue today. Share your bread with the hungry … clothe the naked … remove oppression, false accusation, and malicious speech … satisfy the afflicted. When we do this, we will not only be on proper course and in right relationship with God, but will be the salt and light Jesus asks us to be.

Why is the Church called apostolic? The Church is apostolic because she is founded on the apostles, holds fast to their Tradition, and continues to

be governed by their successors. (Catechism 857).

Is the Bible a Dinosaur?

The book of Hebrews tells us, “the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword” (Heb 4:12). We might visit a museum to see old swords, ancient manuscripts, or other important historical items. Does the Bible, the holy word of God belong in a museum? Well, on my recent trip to DC I visited The Museum of the Bible. Opened in 2017, their website states, “Museum of the Bible is an innovative, global, educational institution whose purpose is to invite all people to engage with the Bible.”

If the museum was only concerned with presenting historical artifacts, there would certainly be enough material available to fill all 430,000 square feet of the building. However, the intention goes beyond history. One of the interesting exhibits is the shelves of Bibles translated into every language in the world. The exhibit provides a vibrant visual display of how many languages and dialects are used throughout the world. Since the museum does not have copies of every language, the display asks the visitors to provide information about locating Bibles in specific, more obscure languages. This section of the museum also indicates how people can use the Bible on modern-day mobile devices.

Near the end of my visit a young family with four children approached and asked if I was a Catholic priest. After sharing thoughts about our visit, the

young man said his daughter would be receiving her first Holy Communion this year. I thought to myself, “the museum didn’t highlight John, chapter 6.” A quick search of Wikipedia will show that the Museum of the Bible opened with a few controversies. It is also fair to say that John, chapter 6 has been the center of much debate. The Catholic Church’s teaching on the Eucharist is not accepted by everyone.

The Museum of the Bible accomplishes its goal. Visitors are treated to the rich historical background of the Bible, and beautiful artwork inspired by Scripture. Patrons are even given the opportunity to record a short video to share with others how the Bible impacts their life.

Let me take a moment to highlight one of the many ways Catholics engage with the Bible. Every time we attend the Holy Mass, we are immersed in Scripture. Not only are the readings proclaimed, most of the prayers we recite are Biblical. Also, the Holy Eucharist itself. A quick reading of John 6 will tell us that Jesus didn’t back down or soften his teaching on this topic (see Jn 6:51-58).

The cafeteria in the Museum of the Bible is called “Manna,” and boasts a menu that is kosher and middle eastern in flavor. Perhaps this name was given in playful jest. Let us remember the precious words of our Savior and how he gave us true food and true drink in the Holy Eucharist.
