Principal’s News

Congratulations to our P&C on another very successful open garden day last Saturday. The weather was amazing and the gardens all spectacular. A massive thank you to everyone who contributed to the day, in whatever capacity, it was truly a team effort. Additionally though I would like to give a special acknowledgement to the garden owners for allowing us to visit their homes and enjoy the fruits of their hard work. What a fantastic outcome for our Cows Create Careers team who last Thursday were the district winners of the competition. Congratulations to Claire Wright, Maisie Harrison, Rhian Pengilly, Chloe Bellach and Kathleen Pace on their success and to Mr Kama for overseeing their participation on the day. This Wednesday afternoon the teaching staff will be once again staying on at school for three hours to complete an alternative staff development session. The focus of the afternoon will be on reporting procedures and the development of the 2019 school milestones. This Saturday from midday to 3pm the Lions Club of Canowindra will be holding an event at Morris Park to assist our local farming community. The school supports this initiative and would like to encourage families to attend this worthwhile event. Congratulations to Rianna Reeves for being the winner of our canteen voucher last week.

Australian National Field Days Excursion Last Friday, students from Years 9 & 10 Agriculture, Year 10 Farm Maintenance and Year 11 Primary Industries attended the Australian National Field Days in Borenore. It was a great opportunity for our students to make first hand contact with industry experts. They were able to ask questions and have a look at a wide range of machinery, tools and other equipment, as well as a variety of plants and animals. One of the highlights of the day was the Pig Show that attracted a huge audience. Overall the day provided a very practical and educational experience for our students, hopefully increasing their knowledge and enhancing their learning in the future. Mr Kama & Mr Wilson.

Cows Create Careers Success! On Thursday 25 October, our Year 9 Agriculture Class attended the Cows Create Careers Presentation Day in Cowra. The Cows Create Careers Program, which students have been working on throughout Term 3, is part of the Year 9 Agriculture course and is an important component of the Dairy Cattle topic. As part of the program students had to write and submit a formal business letter addressed to Australian Dairy, take a funny photo with the dairy calves at school and create an Agricultural 3D Model of Dairy Farming for external judging. The Presentation Day was attended by all the schools in the Central West who have been studying the same course. At the awards ceremony, Canowindra High School were the overall winners. Our Year 9 Agriculture students did extremely well by winning the following in competition with the other schools:

Won 4 of the 6 challenge activities on the day Were in the top 2 of the 3D Model presentation Won the Best Cows Create Careers Photo submission in the Central West with “Cow Girl Up”. The winning team,

as pictured below, consisted of Rhian Pengilly, Kathleen Pace, Claire Wright, Maisie Harrison and Chloe Bellach. Overall Winner of all the participating schools on the day.

The students were ecstatic with their success and were great representatives for our school. Congratulations to everyone involved in this great achievement. Mr Kama.

P & C Open Gardens Day Huge Success - Thank You The warm weather brought many visitor to our 5th annual Open Gardens Day over the weekend, which was a great social community event and a wonderful showcase for the school and students. Seven gardens were open around Canowindra, and lunches and morning and afternoon teas were served at the High School Canteen. There was also a raffle and plant stall, and barista trained students served fabulous coffee. This year we welcomed items of metal work for sale. Thank you to everyone who contributed in some way: visitors to the gardens, the volunteer students who helped grow and make items for sale and helped at the school or at each garden, the teachers, parents and grandparents who donated home baking, helped at the gardens, made floral arrangements, organised new signage and easy to erect posts, our extraordinary crew who prepared all the food, and the P & C committee who put in a huge amount of work preparing and coordinating the event. Thank you to Canowindra Tyre Service, Yates garden products and Isubscribe for donating the raffle prizes. The business owners of Canowindra were also very supportive as were our local media. The day also involved a lot of pre work with staff and helpers- in the garden, at the working bee, organising the roster, growing veges and making metalwork items to sell, and as well as copious amounts of support and printing by the Admin staff – thanks to all! Lastly a very big thank you to all the garden owners for opening their gardens, and for all the time and effort they have put into making them look fantastic. We cannot hold this type of fundraiser without their generosity, and feedback about the day and the variety of gardens was excellent. There were 285 admissions to the gardens and 100 lunches were served. Costs have yet to be calculated but estimates are close to $5,000 profit for the P & C. Profits from previous years have gone towards improvements for students at the school. This year the P & C has donated $10,000 towards the hall curtain upgrade, funded the purchase and installation of a 2nd water cooler, and helped with excursion costs for extracurricular activities. The P & C welcomes suggestions to improve the school for the benefit of the students, and are looking for projects to fund. Any ideas welcome via the P & C (contact Ash Wright 0427 448480) or SRC. Thanks again to all involved! Winners of the raffle were: 1st Prize: Jean Leggatt: $250 voucher from Canowindra Tyre Service

2nd Prize: Catia Nowan: Yates Gift Pack 3rd Prize: Bianca Morrison: Isubscribe gift voucher. We have been unable to contact this person on the phone number

provided. Please contact the school if she is known to you.
