For 60 years donors and volunteers have helped JABC introduce BC students to the exciting world of business. Together with our partners, JABC has grown from serving one school district and 375 students in 1955, to serving 32,500 students in 55 school districts with the help of 800 volunteers in 2015! Each year, JA programs have been fueling Canada’s economy, strengthening the workforce and building the busi-nesses that will employee our citizens into the future.
It surprises many to know that JABC does not charge schools, teachers or students for its proven and in-demand programs. Empowering young people, preparing them for the workplace and exploring their entrepre-neurial spirit simply would not be possible without the support and gen-erosity of all our donors: corporations, the provincial government, foun-dations, and individuals with the passion to invest in the next generation of leaders. We also benefit from the gifts of time and enthusiasm from the dedicated volunteers who inspire our students. To mark this anniver-sary milestone, we are launching the JABC Investors Club, a monthly giving option for individuals to directly underwrite JABC programs for the many students still unreached within BC. We invite you to consider becoming a member at http://jabc-community.org/investors-club.
Congratulations to our winners today and to all our partners who make these achievements possible. Thank you for your role in 60 years of inspiration!

JA Student Company Corkulent wants you to “keep calm and grow a cork plant.” They sell tiny succulents planted in magnetized bottle corks that perch on your fridge or file cabinet. This novel idea enables the customer to enjoy a tiny bit of nature in their living space while conserving water and re-purposing cast-off materials. This is an opportunity to grow a greener future and be eco-friendly and socially-responsible at the same time!
Corkulent was managed by 25 students from Britannia Secondary Communi-ty School in Vancouver. Mentors included Paula Garcia (CIBC), James Ather-ton (Great West Life) and Sariah Conor (JA alumnus). Business teachers Lee Nipp and Ksena Tatomir advised the team. The company sold their entire inventory of 979 cork plants, generated an ROI of over 400%, and donated more than $600 to youth charities including the Lower Mainland Green Team and C.L.I.C.K. (Contributing to the Lives of Inner City Kids).

Keynote Speaker:Meredith J. Powell
Meredith Powell is Co-Founder of The Next Big Thing (TNBT), a non-profit foundation that empowers young entrepreneurs with the peer and men-tor networks, alternative education, work space and technology they need to succeed.
Founded in 2013 with Ryan Holmes, CEO of Hootsuite, TNBT directly funded 10 youth-founded startups and helps thousands of other exceptional kids and teens grow their business skills through events such as coding camps.
Prior to TNBT, Meredith bootstrapped three North American brand manage-ment and business strategy agencies in the garment industry, working with Saks, Urban Outfitters, Nordstrom, Amazon, Vogue and Vice, serving over 3,000 retailers and generating $45 million in apparel sales by lever-aging emerging technology.
She has dressed Sarah Jessica Parker, Chloe Sevigny & Julia Roberts, and was featured in NY Times, InStyle, Vogue & Vice.
By 2012, Meredith was tapped to design & launch the world’s largest online B2B fashion wholesale marketplace.
Meredith’s work has been recognized by CTV, Wall Street Journal, BC Business, Marie Claire, Techvibes, Globe & Mail, Notable (“Entrepre-neurship”, 2014), YWCA Women of Distinction (“Technology & Science”, 2015) and Woman of Worth Awards among others.
Meredith is also an activist on behalf of women in entrepreneurship & technology, a dedicated startup mentor and a board member.
