Ceo Jeffrey BuJer And BoArd President LisA gritznerThe recent U.s. supreme Court ruling to uphold the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) represents a significant step forward in providing quality health care for our patients and our community.
The decision to uphold ACA means that The saban Free Clinic will be able to offer cost-effective and affordable health care to even more people in need. Ever vigilant in our Clinic’s advocacy efforts for policies and practices that benefit our patients, we will continue to mobilize our constituents to ensure a smooth path to full implementation of health care reform in 2014. We encourage our readers to sign up for our ongoing Advocacy Alerts to learn more about impacting legislation and local voter registration and election information. (More information on how to sign-up is on page 9.)
The future may be promising for many in 2014, but for the majority of those whom we serve today the need for free and affordable health care still remains. At-risk individuals, such as undocumented immigrants, the homeless, and the recently uninsured are the most likely populations to fall through the cracks of ACA, by either being ineligible for coverage, or unable to afford the newly issued exchange insurance plans, despite government subsidies.
Your support can help us make an easier transition into the new frontier of American health care; allowing us to continue to operate as a high-quality medical home for those who depend on us. Thank you again for your continued partnership.
sincerely,
Jeffrey Bujer Lisa Gritzner CEo, The saban Free Clinic Board President, The saban Free Clinic
deveLoPMent dePArtMent uPdAteHealthy living and well-being advocate Allyn Cioban joined The saban Free Clinic in March 2012 as its new Director of Development. in her current role, she oversees fundraising, donor cultivation and relationship management, and supervises the Development Department staff. Previously, Allyn served as Director of Major Gifts for the Cancer support Community-Benjamin Center (formerly known as The Wellness Community-West Los Angeles). Her professional experience before moving into the nonprofit sector includes
more than fifteen years of television commercial and movie trailer production.
Allyn says that her first few months at the Clinic have been incredibly rewarding. “Each day i come to work and see the filled waiting rooms, i feel great about the vital services we provide to so many people who would otherwise go without health care. To learn though that each patient visit costs the Clinic approximately $175, in which only $75 is being reimbursed (via government programs plus patient donations and fees) clearly shows the gap in our funding and the need for continued support from individual donors, organizations and foundations.”
When Allyn is not at the Clinic, you will probably find her on her yoga mat or teaching a yoga class in santa Monica, where she lives with her husband of nine years. Allyn would love to connect with you. Please contact her at 323.330.1656 or [email protected].

LongtiMe voLunteer roBert Broder, to Be honored with the Lenny soMBerg AwArdRobert Broder will be the recipient of the Lenny somberg Award at the 36th Annual Dinner Gala. This award is presented annually to a volunteer who has devoted countless hours of service to the Clinic and is a strong advocate for the organization.
in 2003, Broder received the prestigious The Friends of The saban Free Clinic Leadership Award in recognition of not only his many professional achievements, but also his passion for serving the neediest members of the Los Angeles community. Broder has
demonstrated his dedication to the Clinic through almost a decade of involvement. He has been volunteering since 2004 and joined the Clinic’s Board of Directors in 2009.
Broder also serves on the Clinic’s strategic Finance Planning Committee and Audit Committee, an important committee that provides oversight of the Clinic’s operational and financial processes to ensure the continued success of the Clinic in providing affordable health care. in 2004, Broder conceived and hosted the Clinic’s 1st Annual Poker invitational. “you gAve Me My hAPPiness”When Eduardo walked into The saban Free Clinic, he felt deformed. suffering from partial facial paralysis, he was depressed and tired of people looking at him with pity.
“i loved the environment of the Clinic and i felt as though it was my second home,” Eduardo said of his first year of treatment in which his facial paralysis was cured. Then, while at a dinner with friends, his facial paralysis almost forgotten, he broke a tooth.
Forty-two years earlier, in Ecuador, he had seen a dentist who popped up in his small town. He remembers that the drill was not run by electricity, but rather a pedal. “she probably wasn’t even a real dentist,” notes Eduardo. That traumatic experience left him terrified of dentists. But when his pain grew
so bad that he stopped eating, he spoke to nageen Farmand, a Physician’s Assistant at the Clinic who gave him a referral to the Clinic’s Dental Department.
The Clinic’s dentists told him that he would need dentures. Throughout the following year they began the work to remake all of his teeth.
He remembers how embarrassed he felt when the local diner charged him the senior citizen rate for his coffee. “Luis Villanueva (Lead Dental Assistant) always told me not to worry; things were going to be ok.” Finally, some good news came his way — The saban Free Clinic would be covering the entire cost of the dentures.
The night before the final procedure, Eduardo couldn’t sleep. His appointment was at 10:15 a.m. but his alarm was set for 6 a.m. He even arrived an hour early. They sized him for his dentures and let him pick his new teeth from various styles. now he has a smile that could light up an entire city block.
“The work that is done is very good but it’s not just the quality of the work that makes a difference, it’s that the staff sees the value of a human being,” Eduardo reported. “To the dentists and staff who helped me through this process, this smile is due to you — you gave me my happiness.”
