Camps International Fund RaisingThe ‘Camps International’ students have been very busy recently. After the success of the Christmas Fair, they have been selling refreshments at parents’ evenings and working hard to raise their funds.

The staff involved have been impressed with the imaginative range of students’ fund-raising activities: from coaching tennis, teaching maths, making chocolate and creating cookbooks, to working in retail outlets, babysitting and organising pub quiz nights.

The team will also be selling refreshments and homemade products during the evening productions of ‘Return to the Forbidden Planet’.

The students are now close to raising all of their funds and are busy acquiring kit, having vaccinations, researching Ecuador – and will soon be learning basic Spanish. The recently organised walk to Alderley Edge, led by Mr Pollock, Mrs Birchill, Mrs Bennett and Mrs Coffey, was an excellent opportunity for both team-building and testing the kit that the students will be using in both the Amazon Jungle and the Andes Mountains. Progress AssembliesThis week, students in Years 7 to 11 have had their half termly progress assembly. This has focused on the 6 actions that students can take that will make a difference to their progress.

Duke of Edinburgh Awards AssemblyA special Awards Assembly was held on 27th January for all those students in the past year who have successfully completed their Duke of Edinburgh Award.

There were 112 students in Year 11 receiving their Bronze award, 26 students in Year 12 receiving their Silver award, and we already have 15 students in Year 13 who have completed their Gold award, with a further 32 nearly finished.

Along with a group of 20 Year 11 students, they received an expedition certificate, but are still to upload paperwork for the full Award.

The assembly was a good opportunity for students to get together with their walking groups and reminisce about the summer expeditions and receive their awards as a group.

We watched a special video put together by some Year 13 students about their Bronze, Silver and finally Gold expeditions, summing up the teamwork, challenge and fun elements of an expedition.

The assembly also gave everyone the chance to thank the large numbers of school staff, volunteers, parents and community groups who assist with the volunteering, physical and skill sections of the award. Your help is always greatly appreciated.

A great many students are now pursuing the next level of their DofE programme so continuing with the commitment and development of personal skills that is so important for the Award.

Holocaust Memorial Day Last week, students at Wilmslow High School learned about the Holocaust in assembly sessions. The theme of this year’s memorial was ‘How can life go on?’, reflecting on the horrors of genocide and people rebuilding their lives in the aftermath of personal and national tragedies.

Mr Mayhew and Year 13 student, Jess Scragg, reflected on their visit to Auschwitz, including Auschwitz I, where thousands of stolen items were stored and Auschwitz-Birkenau, with its iconic train tracks and intimidatingly large site.

The trip to Poland took place on Tuesday 15th November. Mr Mayhew was particularly moved by his visit to the gas chambers, where victims faced murder on an industrial scale. It was the prayers in Hebrew and final reflections, such as memorialising and respecting the memory of the victims, which Jess claimed was the most moving part of the visit. She also reflected upon what the Rabbi had said- “why do we always wait until people are leaving or dying, to tell them that we love them?”

The assembly also recalled personal connections to the horrors of the Holocaust, where her great-aunt was persecuted, but committed to never let people forget what happened.

On Holocaust Memorial Day, a small vigil was held in school and students remembered the victims of this and other genocides, by lighting 6 candles (one for every million Jewish victims).

The week concluded with the students and staff involved in a renewed commitment to sharing the lessons from Auschwitz, along with those of other genocides in Rwanda and Darfur with future generations.

Those involved in the programme join 30,000 other students involved in sharing the lessons of the holocaust, facilitated by the Holocaust Educational Trust, since 1999.

As we approach the final two weeks of rehearsals, the cast, band and crew are working hard to ensure the show is a success.

Rehearsals have been taking place every lunch time and each day after school – and the cast and band have now assembled to bring the onstage action and live music together.

With iconic songs such as ‘Great Balls of Fire’, ‘Teenager In Love’ and ‘Born To Be Wild’ and the interactive video footage– the collaboration between Drama, Music, Dance and Media has never been more important!

Wednesday 1st February saw the installation of an impressive space craft on which the narrative unfolds and so the cast are now exploring the set with intrigue and excitement. The production team owe a lot of gratitude to Prosceneium Set Company for the design and realisation of this staging and with lighting to be provided by the very creative DSB Solutions - we are sure that the aesthetics

of ‘Return to the Forbidden Planet’ will be visually stunning.

The production team would like to thank everyone – both staff and students – for their hard work and commitment since starting this project last term.

Tickets for Wednesday 15th and Friday 17th February are selling

fast so make sure you book yours today to avoid disappointment.

For tickets or further information, please contact the Box Office at [email protected] or visit the Box Office in the school

foyer during lunchtimes.

NOTES

VapingAs part of our ‘whole education’ and belief that we should promote young people of character, all students have been spoken to by either their Heads of House or tutors this week on the following dangers: vaping and internet safety. Please can you speak to your son/daughter and ensure they are fully aware of the risks involved.

Is vaping safe? Vaping could be “no better” than smoking regular cigarettes and may be linked to cancer, scientists have found. The study which showed that vapor from e-cigarettes can damage or kill human cells was published by UK public health officials in 2016.

Is there nicotine in electronic cigarettes? Although they do not produce tobacco smoke, e-cigarettes still contain nicotine and other

potentially harmful chemicals. Nicotine is a highly addictive drug, and recent research suggests nicotine exposure may also prime the brain to become addicted to other substances. For this reason vapes and e-cigarettes are classed as banned items. This is outlined in the student planner pages 13-14.

Wilmslow High School’s position on e-cigarettes• E-cigarettes are a tobacco product containing nicotine which is addictive• Poisoning through incorrect chemicals

in e-cigarettes being inhaled has increased significantly in the last 12 months

• Must be 18 years of age to buy an e-cigarette

• School has a zero tolerance approach to e-cigarettes and the process of ‘vaping’(the most serious sanctions will be used by school that could include seclusion, exclusion or even permanent exclusion)

• Please report any incidents to Student Services particularly in toilets as we want these to be a safe environment for all students.

• Anyone caught using or carrying e-cigarettes or ‘vaping’ will be dealt with very seriously.

On-line safetyAll KS4 tutors will be showing a clip advised by Cheshire Police to encourage safeguarding of young people. KS3 tutors have had discussions with students about the dangers of sharing details on-line and in-particular a new APP called, Yellow.

This app, rather worryingly, is like Tinder for children, the students should be advised not use this app as they don’t know who, in reality, is at the other end of the messaging service. Students must never share personal details on-line and should ensure their safety settings are set high.

A reminder was also given by the police delivering the assembly about sexting and on-line safety. Students sending images to one another will be classed as ‘sharing indecent images of a child’ on-line, and students can be criminalized for this as it is against the law. Any incidents of sexting as advised by Cheshire police have to be passed over to social care and the police to assess any relative risks.

HockeyThe U18 girls travelled to Chester to play the King’s School on Wednesday. As usual, this proved to be a tough, close encounter. In the end, we just lost out, having a goal disallowed late on and losing 3-2.

The U13s had their Nationals competition this week where they came across some very tough opposition, losing out to Queens, Birkenhead and The Grange school. The girls played some fantastic

hockey though and did manage to beat Alderley Edge and Hartford.

It was a similar story for the U14s who finished third in the indoor hockey finals. Again, our girls played some great hockey but just fell short in the end. In other news, congratulations to Jen Park (Year 12) and Tor Hughes (Year 13) who once again, have both been selected in the England U18 Hockey squad. A fantastic achievement, well done girls!

A reminder to all parents and students of the importance of punctuality and the impact on learning time. Many important messages are shared in tutor

time and therefore it is paramount that students arrive on time.

We will be carrying out a ‘Late Gate’ from now on and any students arriving after 8.45am will be given an immediate referral.

NetballOn Wednesday the senior netball girls travelled to Stockport Grammar in a friendly fixture.

The girls put in another great performance to win 29-12. Meanwhile, at junior level the U12 A & B and U13s also played fixtures against Manchester High School, beating them 22-6, 6-5 and 21-11 respectively.

On Saturday, the U14 girls travelled to Wirral Grammar to take part in the regional finals. In the end the girls finished third in their group, losing out to St Monica’s and Bacup. However, they did play some fantastic netball and beat Sedbergh, IOM and West Kirby along the way.

Unknown to Gloria, her infant daughter, Miranda, slumbered peacefully in the craft and was now catapulted light years into the future in her father’s company.

On a stormy night in the winter of 2516, mad scientist Dr. Prospero worked late in his laboratory, aided only by his wife, Gloria, as he developed the elusive formula known as ‘The X-Factor’ - with which he would change the world. Tired of his mind games and grand plans, the apparently faithful GLoria duped him and sent him off into hyper-space in an old spacecraft.

Fifteen years later, a routine survey flight under the command of the chisel-jawed Captain Tempest leaves earth’s orbit with a new Scheince Officer aboard - a hard and bitter woman. As a shower of meteorites hits the ship, the Science Officer flees, and the craft is pulled inexorably towards the planet D’Illyria - the Forbidden Planet. The adventure begins ......
