WOW! this year has flown? Children have returned back to school from holidays and

it is August already. The Communities for Children team and the Community Partners

have been very busy so far, with supporting and enabling over 30 different programs

for children and families. The team has delivered a range of community and service

workshops and training that includes, Senior First Aid and Bringing Up Great Kids.

We have provided and been involved with approximately 40 different community

events that included delivering 4 family camps and a massive C4C Expo at the Civic

Centre just recently. The C4C initiative has connected with 16,929 individuals and has

produced 4 quarterly newsletters, distributing 7,500 copies to the community. Thank

you for the positive feedback you have provided to us, the contributions you have

made and the increasing interest in wanting to play a role and volunteer within the

C4C initiative. Please keep your articles, children’s drawings and ideas coming.

C4C is an initiative that is funded by the Australian Government Department of Social

Services and at the end of June 2014 we received notification that AnglicareSA

Communities for Children Playford will be funded for another 5 years. Under the

Wow! What an event! The C4C Expo Family Fun Day was a great

day filled with fun for everyone. The line up at the doors began

at 9am and did not stop!

A great event to showcase C4C Programs and achievements.

Children were excited to see Peppa and George Pig perform and

4 lucky children won a meet and greet on the main stage along

with a $50 Gift card kindly donated by Elizabeth Shopping

Centre.

The fun didn’t stop there! The Amazing Drumming Monkeys had

families moving to the beat of two great performances. Impact

Crew and Pact choir performed as well as True North Youth

Theatre Ensemble Performing Our Home.

Jumping castles, rock climbing, Animals Anonymous, photo booth,

face painting and balloon twisting were all great free fun for

families to enjoy.

Benjamin from Bryce’s Bakery at Elizabeth Shopping

Centre was the lucky winner of the free door prize! The

prize bucket had giant Peppa and George Plush toys as well

as some fun family games and books. Benjamin’s young son

was very excited when collecting his prize from the C4C

office. The C4C team hope they have lots of family fun

time with the prize!

Although the line ups for lunch got big at times, the free

lunch choice of a lamb or chicken yiros, nachos, hot potato or a

hot ham and cheese roll were all great tasty choices for a cold

but sunny day. The yummy fresh sweet and savoury scone

choices along with fruit skewers, veggie skewers and a hot

drink were also a hit!

The Playford C4C Team would like to say a big thank you to our

Community Partners for showcasing their programs at the event

and for all of their support. Also thank you to all the families

that attended the event and for supporting our programs.

Our focus is on him...

The Ex and I – It’s been a long and bumpy road - It’s taken 4 years but nothing could be better

than calling an Ex, my sons father, a friend. It has its days some we don’t even get along but

then so does any relationship. We decided we must put our differences aside to give our son

the best life. We may not be together but that does not stop us doing things together. I think it is

important to show this “team approach” to family and friends but especially our son.

Sometimes our rules are different but we try hard to talk about this so we can back each other

up and be on the same page. Honestly we have a love hate relationship but to be able to raise

our child together is great. The bond I made with my son through being a single mum was the

best thing to come out this less positive situation and now I know that when I need support my

ex is there for us too.

Waddling as she Finds her Voice by Bec It’s hard to believe a year has passed and now Ebony is walking like a professional [ almost ] she is gaining so much confidence. When at the shops she likes to go her own way and we are balancing freedom with keeping her safe. So excited is Ebony that she has taken to shrieking and screeching in between her words – DOG – MUM and DAD. The high pitched screams were happening so often that it was really stressing us out, I kept thinking Ebony what do you want – what is wrong. I was getting really concerned until someone assured me that this was just her way of finding her voice – she so wants to talk - this must be a frustrating time for her.

Flying high with my 3 kids for their very first FLIGHT - by Bobbie F = Fearful [ OMG how will I manage – what if we crash ] L = Long time [ from the moment we left home to arriving at the hotel in Melbourne was 6 hours the flight was only 50 minutes ] I = Interesting [ Seeing new places and new experiences the kids loved it ] G= Gruelling [ Juggling kids, luggage, tickets, and people everywhere ] H= High [ things look so different from 10,000 feet ] T =Testing [ you want to put your parenting to a test try it – it is so worth it ]

Starting School our learning can begin – By Laura When your youngest starts school we as parents are expected to find others things to do for 6 hours a day when we can be “not parents but people”, this can be daunting. This has been made a little easier through being involved with Playford Communities for Children in particular Coffee N Chat. This coupled with my own research on my local community has helped me discover many opportunities for parents to mingle, network, start projects and share stories. Meeting new people is really great and you won’t know till you try it, my advice “ get out there and see”

New Ride Safe Park Children in the City of Playford now have a safe space to learn to ride their

bikes at Mayfair Reserve, Mayfair Drive in Andrew’s Farm!

The park is the first of its kind in the North and features

mini replica road signs, bitumised pathways, art pieces,

as well as a pretend school and pretend petrol station.

The City of Playford, AnglicareSA Communities for

Children Playford and OPAL staff worked closely with

the residents surrounding the reserve to create the

design for the park, with the residents nominating what

features they would like to see installed.

During the first week of the April school holidays seven children and their parents worked with two

talented artists to design and paint one of the features that the community were passionate to see,

these were large art poles that reflected nature that could form part of an imaginary “woodlands” section

in the park. These poles have recently been installed and are looking great!

The park was launched on the 18th July as part of the OPAL Festival and saw many local children

come down to enjoy the day with some riding activities, art and crafts, the OPAL smoothie bike and

Bully Proof will engage children, parents and school staff in a multi-layered approach to

bullying prevention.

To increase knowledge of Bullying and what to do when it happens.

To increase awareness about the bullying procedures within schools and the wider

Community. To increase children’s opportunity to feel safe at

school and in the wider community. To decrease barriers for children who are seeking

AnglicareSA Reconciliation In The West Event

National Sorry Day - 26th of May National Sorry Day is an annual day of commemoration and remembrance of all those who have been

impacted by the forcible removal of family memebers that have resulted in the Stolen Generations.

The National Sorry Day event was held at Victoria Square / Tarndanyangga, the event was a great day enjoyed by all . Playford Communities for Children were one of many services at the event with an

information stall providing information on our programs running in the Playford Region along with a fun interactive playdough activity for children to enjoy.

Thursday the 29th of May AnglicareSA held their Reconciliation In The West Event. The day was full of fun activities, talented performers and useful information stalls.

The Playford Communities for Children and The Communities for Children Onkaparinga teams

were kept busy throughout the day with their fun photo booth activity. Children, families and adults enjoyed the fun of having their photo taken with props and decorating frames to stick

their printed picture on to.

Keep an eye out for the C4C team at community events with their photo booth fun activity!

Ride a bike right On Friday the 18th of July C4C+ provided children in the Playford region the chance to engage in

the Ride a bike right program at Elizabeth South Primary School. The ride a bike right program provides children with an opportunity to build self confidence and

increase their riding skills in a fun and safe environment.

Christine gets her First Aid Certificate Christine and her son James are a HIPPY Elizabeth Grove family who are actively engaged in the age 4 program which started in March of this year. Through her HIPPY Home Tutor Maree, Christine received a flyer from the Playford Communities for Children program offering a free first aid course to anyone in the community that was interested and Christine jumped at the offer. Unfortunately when she rang to register for the training the course was full, so Christine put her name down on the waiting list and hoped for the best.

The night before the training Leonie from Communities for Children rang Christine with the good news that there was a space available for her to attend if she was still interested. Leonie gave Christine the link to the website for her to complete the pre-course study questions before the face to face training the next day. Christine stayed up till 3am to complete the pre-training study in preparation for the next day, she said “I wanted to give up but my husband said… You can do it Christine, just keep trying". The next day Christine attended the first aid training, completed the assessment and received her certificate.

Christine said “I was really nervous at first when we started the assessment but I passed and got 81%. I now feel much more prepared if something happens in an emergency I’ll know what to do. If HIPPY didn’t pass on the flyer to me I never would have known about the first aid training. Thank you to HIPPY, Playford Communities for Children and Maree my HIPPY Home Tutor for this great opportunity”.

Tuesday the 15th of July was full of Science fun in the Elizabeth North Primary School Gym. The day started off with the SciWorld Spectacular Show, with amazing experiments teaching children

about chemistry, energy, forces and so much more!

The Stardome gave everyone the opportunity to crawl inside and discover the universe around them.

Children in year levels rec-3 enjoyed the ‘I want to do science’ workshop learning experiments they could do at home as well as some hands on fun .

Children in year levels 4-7 enjoyed the “Robotics’ workshop learning to predict, test and evaluate. They

had fun programing robots to move, talk and interact.

The School Dental Service offers expert oral health care to eligible children at clinics throughout South Australia. This care is provided by teams of dentists, dental therapists, and dental assistants. All preschool, primary school and secondary school students, aged under 18 years, are eligible for oral health care with the School Dental Service.

If you would like to make a dental appointment for your child, you can contact a School Dental Clinic in your area. Interpreters are available through SA Dental Service. Our staff can arrange for an interpreter to contact you or be present at your child’s appointment. What treatment will be provided at my child’s appointment?

applying fluoride and fissure sealants to prevent tooth

filling or extracting teeth when necessary

All dental care is free for preschool clients.

Primary and secondary school children who are dependents of/holders of the following concessions are eligible to receive free dental care:

Department of Veterans Affairs Pensioner Concession Card

School Card For primary and secondary school children who are not dependents of, or holders of the above concessions, a fee of $42 will apply for each course of general dental care provided.

How do I pay for my child’s dental care?

Families who are not eligible for free care will be invoiced $42. This fee may be paid at Australia Post or by BPay from a cheque, savings or credit card. School Dental Clinics do not accept cash payments.

What if I have private health insurance?

If you have private dental cover your child/children can access care directly from a private dental provider. Patients with private dental cover but choosing public care should ask their fund if the cost of treatment at a government dental clinic is covered.

Does Medicare cover dental treatment through the school dental service?

From January 2014 Medicare will introduce The Child Dental Benefit Scheme . Eligible children will receive up to $1,000 of dental care over a two year period. For more information ask your local school dental clinic or visit the Department of Health and Ageing website


Inclusive Directions is proud to be a registered provider under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The scheme aims to support people with permanent disability, their families and carer’s. The program which is available to families under the NDIS is called ‘Challenging Ground Hog Day’. It is an in home family support program that addresses the everyday challenges, such as toileting, play every day routines and transitions. The program has a ‘hands on’ approach through modelling, mentoring and advice to address children’s individual needs.

Nature Play at

Smithfield Plains Pre School

The term ‘Nature Play’ is very much alive in early childhood services and schools in South Australia as they engage in dialogue around blurring the boundaries between inside and outside environments and encourage play in the natural environment. Marc Armitage who is a world expert on play presented a workshop at Smithfield Plains Pre School who incorporate nature play in their everyday learning. The idea is to allow children freedom to play, explore and create as they play. The benefits are obvious: building confidence, using imagination and child centred exploration. I remember my childhood where the backyard was my heaven and my friends and I had a whole world of our own with trees to climb, wood, sticks, leaves, mud and rocks to collect and become anything we wanted. Schools and early childhood settings are being encouraged to recreate such settings to give that sense of freedom and imagination to children today. Risk taking and testing our own limits are seen by proponents of nature play as important elements of children’s growth which in the age of helicopter parents have been greatly reduced. Marc Armitage says that the benefits of such play experiences will be life long. As we talk about survival skills needed by students in the 21st Century, this makes a lot of sense.

Delicious Muffin Pizzas Ingredients 4 wholemeal muffins split in half 1/2 cup tomato paste 2 cups shredded ham 2 cups grated cheese You can add any other pizza toppings of your choice Method Preheat oven to 190 degrees Place muffin halves on a baking tray and cover each half with tomato paste and top with cheese and ham Cook for 10 minutes in preheated oven or until cheese is melted and browned on the edges

Yummy Cold Rolls

Ingredients

12 large rice paper rounds

1 green oak lettuce, leaves separated, washed, dried

1/2 large barbecued chicken, skin and bones removed, meat shredded (see note)

1 red capsicum, thinly sliced

1 Lebanese cucumber,

halved, thinly sliced

1/2 cup beansprouts, trimmed

sweet chilli sauce, to serve Step 1 Half-fill a shallow dish with warm water. Dip 1 rice paper round in water. Place on work surface. Stand for 20 to 30 seconds or until soft enough to roll without splitting. Step 2 Place lettuce along edge of rice paper. Top with chicken, capsicum, cucumber and beansprouts. Roll up, folding up edges to enclose filling. Cover roll with a damp tea towel to prevent it drying out. Repeat with remaining rice paper rounds and fillings to make 12 rolls. Cut in half. Serve rolls with sweet chilli sauce.
