Celebrating Diversity

Indonesia is full of diversity. We have various cultures, ethnicities, languages

and religions. From our diversity, comes great richness and strength. This

diversity and our multicultural background is reflected in our books—fiction,

nonfiction, children’s books, comics—and cross-media products.

“Diversity” is a term that can have multiple interpretations, but at its core, it’s

all about creating “variety”. Our publishers focus on diversity through ensuring

that we offer a variety of perspectives to match a great variety of readers on a

global level. Diversity from a global perspective means, readers from various

parts of the world want content published that is relevant to them. The future

of the publishing industry depends on how prepared they are to serve readers

in these emerging economies.

Between increased cultural awareness and technological growth, we are able

to be more connected than ever before. In the publishing world, we play a key

role in weaving threads that hold together the global community by helping

to fasten different cultures around the world closer to one another. Just like

the future of our world, the future of our industry depends on diversity and

intercultural cooperation.

Generally speaking, Indonesian publishers have never stopped innovating

and deepening their endeavours as they seek to implement the go-global

strategy, thereby bringing about quite a few new highlights in books, digital

innovations and other cross-media platforms such as films, animations and

games. Through this Market Focus Programme at the London Book Fair

2019, Indonesian publishers seek more opportunities and open themselves to

cooperate with the world publishing society and to create mutual benefits. [ ]

Bengkel Buya: Belajar Dari Kearifan Wong Cilik

Dharmaputra Winehsuka

A H M A D S YA F I ’ I M A A R I F A L E X I R Z A Q I

Here you can find the fragments of wisdom from the esteemed Buya Syafi’i Maarif. One of Indonesian prominent intellectuals.

Here he will take you to a short journey to witness the word of Allah that is evident in simple social and natural events in life. We can observe it in the movement of a waterfall, the incessant work of an ant colony, the cry of a gibbon in the break of dawn, the song of a magpie greeting the morning, a discussion between a boy and his parents, and the honest endeavor of a kind mechanic.

Ra Kuti, Ra Semi, and 5 other chosen warriors had been appointed to become new members of Dharmaputra, an elite special force whose main mission was to protect the King of Majapahit. Everyone in this special force must proclaim the sacred vow, “Satya bela bhakti prabu,” which means loyalty, defense, and devotion to the king. But, Jayanegara was a foolish king who had no intention to honor the sacred vow. Slowly but surely, Ra Semi began to question the vow, but Ra Kuti’s faith never wavered.

When loyalty and conscience clash, what would fate bring to this brotherhood of warriors?

Alex Irzaqi was a Dragon Ball fanatic who went on to create his own action martial arts comics. Currently, Irzaqi has established a comic studio specialized at martial -arts genre named Padepokan Ragasukma together with Sweta Kartika and other comic book authors and illustrators.

Ahmad Syafi’i Maarif (born in Sumpur Kudus, West Sumatra on 31 May 1935) is a prominent Indonesian intellectual. Ahmad Syafi’i Maarif was the leader of Muhammadiyah, one of the two biggest Muslim organizations in Indonesia, in 1998 - 2005. Ahmad Syafi’i Maarif was the founder of Maarif Institute and who led and inspired born of Jaringan Intelektual Muda Muhammadiyah (Muhammadiyah Young Intellectuals Network). Nowadays, beside being a senior lecturer in IKIP Yogyakarta, Syafii is active as spokesperson and writer. His writings about madani or civil society have been published in many Indonesian media. He received the 2008 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Peace and International Understanding.

Virgo and the Sparklings

Wayang Purwa

To Riani’s mind, raindrops was blue, and the sound that was coming out of her guitar was pink. This ability to see colors in different sounds had helped Riani to become a maestro, but it also enabled her to conjure up electricity within her body. Riani had done her best to hide her ‘gift’ from the world, but things became interesting when her friend asked her to join her band...

Virgo and the Sparklings is a Bumi Langit Comic’s adaptation of a 70s comics by Annisa Nisfihani and Ellie Goh.

The German language translation of this book was subsidized by the Indonesian Translation Funding Program

Wayang Purwa is a Javanese myth that was set in an era before the Ramayana. Unlike the Mahabharata that uses the original story patterns from India, Wayang Purwa adopts the original Javanese story structure that tells the story of Gods’ origins, the formation of a three-stratum earth, and how evil had descended to earth through the birth of Batara Kala. It continues with the story of Sasrabahu which then become a link to the Ramayana story that follows. This comic was first published by Melodi in 1956, Pluz+ later rereleased it in 2009.

Annisa Nisfihani, is a comic artist from Tenggarong, East Borneo. She won the LINE messenger webtoon contest in 2015 with her work, My Pre-Wedding. Her other bestselling comics are Geng Bokek (Elex Media), Notice – Love Mate (Dar! Mizan).

Saleh Ardisoma was every comic artist ’s role model through the 1950s to the 1960s. His works are praised by fellow artists, critics, and even art collectors – his reputation goes beyond the comic circle. He is most well -known for Wayang Purwa. Other works that are also well -acknowledged including Ulamsari and Djakawana. Mister Katung And Seri Pusaka Sakti – Pak Katung and The Magical Heirloom Series (in collaboration with Ardina) are his lesser-known works. He passed away at a young age in the 1960s at the peak of his creativity.

Ellie Goh is a freelance comic artist and illustrator. She uses the webtoon platform from Line Chat application to publish her comic series.

Tony Wahid, www.cikopi.com

Using his power to control electricity and lightning, VOLT began his quest to uphold justice and truth throughout the world.

Proposal for The President

Only Human #01

What adventures await a unique young man from Wonogiri who had left everything behind and walked to the National Palace to ask the President to fulfill the promise that he had once made? What happened to the boy who went into a coma after he fell from a broken-down bridge? How would this young man convince a part-time college student to move one from her ex-boyfriend? And would a single proposal be able to force the President to return to his destined fate?

Only Human tells the story of the post star war life on planet earth in the future. Five hundred years after the annihilation of human civilization, Earth’s condition made it impossible for human beings to maintain their humanoid shape. Everyone had to live as an automa: human mind and soul trapped in a robot body.

The main character of the story is a man known as the Doctor. He was a automa who had a television set as his head and a hand that looks like a human hand. One day while he was investigating Lab 21, he found a giant capsule with Ely 210 written on it. As he opened it, a small human child stepped out. Doctor and his assistant, Yurika, named the child Ely. Surprisingly, Ely could manage to survive in the new world without an automa. Hence the adventure of Doctor, Yurika, and Ely began….

Football’s Coming Home!

Indonesia 1998

The first section of this book is about sweet childhood memories and football in Jakarta around the 80s. On the second section of the book, Mice was having fun mocking the football commentators on TV.

Indonesia 1998 is Mice’s first work published in 1999 after the 1998 riot in Jakarta. Octopus Garden republished them with additional comic prolog and epilog so that the readers would understand what it was like during those problematic times in Indonesian history. This comic book captures people’s conversations, trends, and lifestyles during the economic crisis in 1998. This comic book is considered to be Mice’s best work.

Mice is a very well -known comic artist in Indonesia. He was born in Jakarta, July 23, 1970. He graduated from Jakarta Art Institute with a degree in graphic design in 1993. He went to work for the Rakyat Merdeka Daily since 2010 until now.

“In the dramatic months leading to Suharto’s downfall, the Dutch press reported daily the events on the streets of Jakarta

-- from the student protests to the bloody riots in Glodok.

But only after reading Mice’s Indonesia 1998 have I understood clearly how those events affected people’s day-to-day lives.

This collection is humorous and striking. I wish the English version had been published much earlier!”

PETER VAN DONGEN, creator of the award-winning Rampokan series of historical graphic novels set in colonial era Java and Sulawesi

“Mice’s cartoons marked an era in Indonesia. They are grotesque, often visceral, and usually self-mocking.

Like street life in Indonesia, they are both funny and rude. In that way, they made political and social life more bearable.”

EKA KURNIAWAN, author of Beauty is a Wound (nominated for Man Booker International Prize in 2016)

Indonesia’s Politics 2010-2015: in Mice Cartoon’s Opinion

Little Mice: Game Over!!

These are Mice’s work about politics in Indonesia. Mice is the creator of political cartoons for Rakyat Merdeka. Here are some of his previously unpublished works. The 480 cartoons are put in chronological order with text captions added so readers can search for them on the internet.

Mice was feeling nostalgic about his childhood and the traditional games that he used to play with his friends in the neighborhood. These comics showed us the traditional games that are on their way becoming extinct, because they were being replaced with high tech gadgets. These sweet memories hopefully will inspire the readers, especially parents, to teach their children the games in this book.

Galauman, Vol. 2 Legendary Fighters, Vol. 1

Some people, like Gabriel Laurent, used the superpowers they receive from rejection to do good things in this world. But there were those who used theirs for evil purposes, like Christa and Gracia, former teen idols who lost their popularity to the currently famous group SKJ 84. Christa and Gracia would then become two of Galauman’s most iconic villains.

Everybody wants to make right something they had done wrong in the past. Tarung Legenda offers this chance of redemption by turning tragic people into legendary masters. They would then fight each other to decide the champion who will be awarded a priceless second chance.

Rampokan Java & Celebes

Arjuna Sasrabahu

It was 1946, and Indonesia had just obtained its freedom. Hundreds of volunteers from the Netherlands returned to Indonesia with a deep passion for patriotism to defend their country’s dignity. Johan Knevel and Erik Verhagen were among them. Both were born in the Dutch East Indies, and they returned to the country filled with dreams and illusions. Johan dreams of the tempo doeloe, the olden days, the haven of his childhood where he still had Ninih, his nanny. But when Erik was lost at sea, Johan was burdened by guilt. Using Erik’s identity, Johan traveled to Makassar, his birthplace. But because Erik was a known communist, the Dutch army was now in pursuit of him. This psychological graphic novel about the past and loss of identity is delivered through the depiction of rampokan, the tradition of tiger fight in Java. A great danger loomed over the country when the tiger, a symbol of evil and the Dutch invader, managed to escape.

This classic comic tells the story about the king of Mayaspati, Arjuna Sasrabahu, who was the reincarnation of the god, Wisnu. Together with Sumantri, Salya, and Salya’s giant brother, King Arjuna had to battle against the evil King Rahwana of the Alengka Kingdom.

R.A. Kosasih adapted the Indian epic Mahabaratha into this classic 4 volume Arjuna Sasrabahu series. A true classic in the early golden era of Indonesian comic.

Peter van Dongen graduated from Grafische School in Amsterdam. His first works were published in a variety of amateur and alternative magazines, such as Rebel Comix and Balloen. His first book, Muizentheater, about two working-class youths in Amsterdam during the Depression, was published in 1990 and was awarded the Stripschapprijs for Best Comic Book in 1991. Rampokan Java won the Best Book Design Award in 1999.

semangat patriotisme untuk mempertahankan

harga diri bangsa. Dua di antaranya adalah

Johan Knevel dan Erik Verhagen, yang lahir di

benak penuh angan-angan dan ilusi.

Johan memimpikan kembalinya “tempo doeloe”,

surga masa kecil, dan Ninih, pengasuhnya.

Namun Erik lalu tenggelam ditelan ombak dan

Johan dihantui rasa bersalah.

Ia lantas memakai identitas Erik dan pergi

Penceritaan roman sejarah dan psikologis

Bencanalah bagi negeri apabila macan, simbol

After being successful with the Superheroes genre, R.A. Kosasih moved on into arguably his most beloved works: Mahabharata. An Epic battle of Good and Evil. A masterpiece, which was made from 1953 - 1957. Kosasih gave his all, and went through a period of research, meditation even fasting.

Serat Tripama: The Maespati Love Story

Sumantri was commissioned to deliver Dewi Citrawati, his master’s bride-to-be, to the Land of Maespati. It was common knowledge that the path to Maespati was an unpredictable one. Along the way, Sumantri saw a rose fell on the ground, and he became enamored. Who cares if the rose was black, red, or even white? Like any man in love, Sumantri was blinded and began to lose his bearings. In his mind, these dangerous tracks were his road to everlasting love. Citrawati was scared to death. The horses were not trained to go through these treacherous tracks. However, to Sumantri these dangerous paths are fantastic avenues that would take him to his eternal love.

Sujiwo Tejo transformed Serat Tripama into a graphic novel that according to the cultural observer, Seno Gumira Ajidarma, gives a literary touch to comics by each detail of his description. In this graphic novel, the pictures are the story.
