1. The proposal

The London Borough of Bexley is proposing to expand Birkbeck Primary School to provide 30 additional pupil places in each year group. The expansion would increase the school from a two form of entry to a three form of entry. New, permanent classrooms would be constructed to accommodate the additional pupils.

2. Why the change?

In common with other London boroughs and many authorities across the country, Bexley is experiencing an increase in demand for primary school places due to rising birth rates and increasing numbers of families moving into the area. Bexley’s schools are at full capacity. We have already provided extra places at 20 primary schools and more places are needed each year. Birkbeck Primary School is a popular school in an area that has seen an increased demand for school places and it has been identified as being suitable for expansion.

3. Timescales

Any comments made at the public meeting on 5 July will be considered during the formal consultation period. There will be a four week period for anyone interested to comment on the proposal, ending on 17 July 2017.

A notice about the consultation will be placed at the entrance to Birkbeck Primary School, in the public notice section of the News Shopper and on the Council’s website at www.bexley.gov.uk/consultations

Full details of the proposal and the draft plans for the buildings will also be online at www.bexley.gov.uk/consultations during the consultation period.

All feedback will be considered before a final decision on whether to proceed is made by the Cabinet Member for Education. Planning permission for the new classrooms will also be required and following the consultation, local residents will also have the opportunity to comment on the proposal as part of the planning approval process.

If the proposal to expand the school and the planning application are approved, building work will start early 2018. The new classrooms will be ready by September 2019.
