TULOSO-MIDWAY INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT CONSTRUCTION UPDATE # 16 Our construction projects were faced with one delay after another throughout 2015 due to weather delays. All of this resulted in our projects being months behind schedule. However, with no rain since the first of January 2016, these projects are slowly getting caught up and progress can be seen on all the construction sites. Weather permitting all of the 36 million dollar bond projects should be completed by the end of the year! One of the last projects to start this past year and appears to be one of the first to be completed is the new agricultural facility located across Haven Drive from Warrior Stadium. This project started with site and utility work followed by the pouring of the foundation and cement slab of the building. Once this was done the metal building was erected. Currently work is being done on the finishing’s of the interior of the building, the store front of the front of the building and the concrete driveway around the building. One feature of this building is the large garage doors on the sides of the building for ventilation along with the bird proof wiring to prevent birds from getting into the building. This facility includes restrooms for the students and a large classroom for meetings and other instructional activities. In addition, the facility includes a drive-thru drop off for loading and unloading animals. The final phase of this project is the installation of the animal pens and cages for poultry and rabbits. This project is currently scheduled to be completed in mid-April and should be ready for students to start using the building in July 2016. P.O. CONSTRUCTION UPDATE # 16

Our construction projects were faced with one delay after another throughout 2015 due to weather delays.

Another part of the bond projects that is currently underway is the Intermediate Classroom Addition that includes 16 new classrooms. Groundbreaking for this facility was in December 2014 and of all the projects suffered the most delays due to the weather. A phase of the building that was completed early was the redesign of the front parking lot for parking and student drop off and pick up. This was completed in early fall of 2015 and addressed the many traffic issues faced by parents bring their children to school. “It has been a night and day difference in the traffic flow and worked just like we hoped it would,” said Principal Ayme Morales. Presently about 50% of the building has been constructed with the foundation and outside cinder-block walls. Currently, (1) the decking of the roof is underway along with framing out the individual classrooms in the new addition; (2) waterproofing and installation on outside wall of the building; (3) and, plumbing work in the restrooms and other parts of the building. Attached to this project is the 12,000 sf FEMA Dome which is not part of the 36 million dollar bond but rather funded through a 75/25% split between FEMA and the school district. The stem-wall of this building has been erected and last week in front of some of the student body the dome liner was inflated and the processes of applying rebar and shotcrete has begun. This is a layer by layer process that will take about 6-weeks to finish. Once the FEMA Dome is finished it will serve as gym during the school day and an emergency shelter once an emergency has been declared by the City of Corpus Christi. We have had little rain since the start of January and the contractors have been taking advantage of the good weather and making steady progress. We are shooting for this project to be completed by sometime this summer.

Other ongoing projects are the reconstruction of the tennis courts at the Middle School. Again, this construction project experiencing significant delays this past year. The old courts were demolished and with the rains the contractor had to continue to pump water out of the site. Cement has been poured on three of the tennis courts with seven more courts yet to be poured. It appears that these courts will be ready for the start of the new school year. This project is not part of the 36 million dollar bond but rather from a settlement fund.

The last project is the FEMA Dome located on the grounds of Tuloso-Midway High School. Again, not part of the 36 million dollar bond but rather the same 75/25% split as the Intermediate Dome. This dome is larger than the other dome and is 20,000 sf. This dome is approximately 80% complete. Ongoing work on site is the sidewalks and driveways accessing the Dome from the stadium parking lots. Currently, finishing work on the inside is being done (restroom fixtures, dressing room lockers, concession stand and lighting). Once complete, the facility will serve as a multi-

purpose room during the school day and an emergency shelter as needed. As part of the school district’s use of the facility are dressing rooms for both baseball and softball and a concession stand and public restrooms for use during baseball and softball games. This Dome should be finished by May 2016.

As you can tell, we have been extremely busy here at Tuloso-Midway with the various construction projects throughout the school district. With more good weather like we are currently experiencing, all of these project should be done no later than the end of the current year. “We are excited to have these projects completed,” said TM Superintendent Dr. Sue Nelson. “It has been a long five years since we started the bond program and we can’t wait for our kids to get to use these awesome facilities. We have some of the best facilities not only in South Texas but the entire state,” added Dr. Nelson. “I am so thankful for my team and all the hard work they continue to do on a day-to-day basis.” Feel free to contact my office with any questions and concerns you might have regarding any of these projects at (361) 903-6422.

Sincerely,

Assistant Superintendent for School Operation Services
