    84th NAVAL C~S'm.UCTION BAftALION

    The 84th Naval Construction Battalion vaa formed at the Naval

    Construction Training Center, Davisville, Rhode Island on January 11,

    1943. The new Seabees were under the charge of the Senior Medical

    Officer until their Commissioning on February 10, when Lt. Cdr.

    ected to lead the review for Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox on April

    4, when Camp Endicott was formally dedicated.

    Departing Davisville April 21, 1943 they proceeded via Camp Parks,

    California, then Camp Rousseau at Hueneme, California, to their over

    seas missions. The battalion, numbering 28 officers, 33 chiefs and

    1023 enlisted men, embarked }olay 31 on the S. S. YOUDg .-\merica without

    escort or convoy for Australia. The ship reached Brisbane June 18, and

    the newly arrived battalion moved into Camp Seabee.

    Naval Mine Depot at Mt. Coot-Tha; a Merchant Marine Anti-Aircraft Station

    at Wellin~ton Point; 4 Naval supply ~larehouse, barracks and Mess hall

    at the Perry Park Project, and Mobile Hospital No. 9 in Brisbane.

    Meanwhile, the main body of 20 officers and 5S9 men under Lt.

    Cdr. Schrepfel'llWl, arrived at l-filne Bay July 7, 1943 and established

    themselves a temporary camp at Gamadodo. They were occupied with un

    ashore July 25. It was not until September 1 that their permanent camp

    vas fully complete4.

    Howeyer this did not deter tb_ fro. their main mission of const

    ruction. A detachment of eleyen men UDder Lt. C. D. Miller was sent to

    bees at Milne Bay were assigned to construction ot a NaTal Supply Depot

    vi th a 40 by .500 foot wharf, two cold storage warehouses, four frame

    warehouses. twenty five 40 by 100 foot huts and a 20 by 48 adJa1nistration

    building, a camp tor depot personnel and four 20 by SO foot aanunition

    magazines. In addition the battalion vas charged with constructing a

    200 bed hospital with 3,000 man recuperation center at Hilimoi Mission.

    Initially they vere delayed by torrential raiDs and the necessity

    of completing their own cap. wben possible. the JHID worked on a 6-day,

    nine-hour shift schedule. They were fUrther hampered. itl 'their main job

    by being called on to supply personnel and equipment for stevedoring

    Company D, hav1.D« rejoined tile _in body on Septemher 12, 1943,

    were Rent to Ladava Mission to establish a campsite tat Naval Base

    Headquarters, for which they constructed. a ISO man barracks, improved

    some roads and altered some native huts. 'lbey departed. to Hllimoi

    Mission on October 24 to work on the hospital project there.

    After being relieved. of all s1':evedorin~ operations in NovemberJ

    the main ~oup at MilDe Bay were able to ccaplete a vital water pipeline

    and 3tora~e tanks totaling 15,000 gallon capacity as well as the Naval

    With the completion of the Na.". Base at Galladodo, the M11ne Bay

    elements of the battalion were ordered to retunl to _stralia. On March

    24, 1944, 115 men and 20 officers departed. to Brisbane, arriving March

    31. The rear echelon, after loadinl out the equiJlHllt, departed April

    11 and arrived in Brisbane April 17. Cdr. Schrepfenun was relieved as

    Officer in Charge by Lt. Cdr. Roger F. Neal, eKe V(S) on Hay 22.

    At Camad.ocio, they had also alsellbled teD poDtoon sections tor a

    431 foot long warf to be constructed at Morotai•. Six 3 by 12 sections

    were carried by three 6 by 18 pontoon barge. with the feur1:b 6 by 18

    ponto{,D barge carring 125 piles ot 55 to 70 foot length. The tour

    loaded barges were towed approx,iJlately 1100 miles and installation was

    completed for the Uberty ship dock at Morotal on Octoher 8, 1944.

    feat.

    Assistance to the 3Jrd Intantry D1Yision in its landing on Morotai

    was ci ted in a letter of appreciation from Maj. Gen. P. \i. Clarkson,

    COIII1.'.nding.

    By December, the men of the 84th were alerted to the fact that

    they nre to continue in the onslaught against the reel.ing torces of

    Japan. A& their CODstruction projects were completed in January I they

    and departed on February 28, 1945.

    The next stop was Puerto Princesa, Palawan, P. I., where the 84th

    Construction Battalion landed March 12, 1945. After completing a

    penaanent camp and a 2,OOV II8D _a8 hall tor the battalion and for in

    colli.ng flight crews, the men turned to their principal. assignments;

    construction of two Acorn Units (one for lud planes and one tor seaplanes)

    a Naval Headquaners UDit, and a Port Directors UDit. In addition tIIey

    cleared 63 acres, graded aDd finished the surface tor taxiway and hard

    stands; of an aircorpa base they cperated a coral pit aDd hauled coral;

    built Naval i\dvanced Base Unit 9 to 80% coapletion in two weeks; blasted

    and moved 19,000 cubic yards of earth for the seaplane ramp and hardstand;

    aDd assembled two pontoon piers for UDload1ng Acorn cc.ponent UDits.

    To these a.sSi~t8 was added the duty ot operating a large brig.

    In April and June their underwater teams reD.')ftd, repaired and replaced

    screws from !.SMa.

    Chronology

    The 84th Naval Construction Battalion was fonned at the Naval

    Construction Training Center, Davisville, Rhode Island

    Departed Davisville and they proceeded via Camp Parks,

    California, then Camp Rousseau at Hueneme, California, to their

    overseas missions.

    Co "A" and "c" and main part of Headquarters Co, including 20

    officers and 569 men departed Brisbane for Milne Bay.

    Co "A", "C", and Headquarters Co arrived Milne Bay.

    9 officers and 498 men located at Brisbane.

    20 officers and 559 men at Milne Bay.

    1 officer and 44 men of Co "B" (Comprising 1 st Echelon Co. "B") departed Brisbane for Darwin.

    1st Echelon, Co "B" arrived at Darwin.

    8 officers and 437 men at Brisbane.

    20 officers and 558 men at Milne Bay.

    1 officer and 44 men at Darwin.

    Co "D", including 4 officers and 240 men, departed Brisbane for

    Milne Bay.

    Co "D" arrived Milne Bay.
