In New Zealand, modular construction have been increasingly gaining prominence especially in the aftermath of natural disasters such as earthquakes. Modularized and pre-fabricated buildings possess the qualities of being flexible and easily relocatable, which can serve as effective temporary housing solutions for affected and displaced residents following natural disasters.

Coupled with this threat is the current housing crisis in New Zealand, which has experienced an increase in property prices of nearly 80% in five years, New Zealand is expected to face a general housing shortage of 100,000 homes by 2030.

Modular construction and pre-fabrication techniques will no longer only be a solution as temporary buildings for disaster recovery but it also emerges as one of the most brilliant ideas to construct buildings in a faster, smarter and cost-effective way. Besides being able to mitigate the housing crisis New Zealand is facing, modularization and pre-fabrication methods are also able to reduce costs and offset cost savings to consumers to bring down property prices.

We understand the complexity and costs involved to make these changes a reality in your organization. Hence, we have carefully crafted the agenda to address the potential challenges you may face across the value chain and have industry thought leaders share their knowledge and experiences through practical insights and meaningful case studies.

Join us at the New Zealand Modular Construction and Pre-Fabrication Conference in Auckland, New Zealand from 5 - 7 December 2016 and explore how modular construction will shape the future of New Zealand’s construction landscape as well as ways to tackle emerging challenges for tomorrow. You will also discover high-growth sectors which you can tap into and achieve growth and gain crucial competitive advantage through effective adoption of off-site construction techniques.

We look forward to welcoming you in Auckland this December!

Opening Keynote AddressChanging The Mind Set: Modular Construction & Prefabrication

Case Study: The Collaboration in Prefabrication

• General perception on modular construction and prefab• Prefab is as good as conventional construction method• How do we overcome the societal misperception on prefab

• What is prefabrication and what does it actually mean for all stakeholders and implications for traditional construction thinking

• Working together within the team and how does it affect traditional lines of communication, procurement thinking and the sequence of design

• The outcome of end product and what are the things we are striving to achieve

Pre-fabricated buildings is not a new concept, having existed since the early 1900s in the United States. However, it only started to gain prominence until the idea of kit homes was introduced. Such technologies allows for assembly-line production and can be mass-produced at much lower costs and at a faster pace.

Through these morning sessions, you will gain what modular construction and pre-fabrication are, the current and future trends of such building technologies in New Zealand and explore how to incorporate these building techniques into your architectural designs and supply chain process.

He has carried out BIM implementation through several practices and across multiple projects to complex clients.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES AND MAKING MODULAR CONSTRUCTION AND PRE-FABRICATION A REALITY

Modular construction and pre-fabrication undeniably bring numerous advantages to the construction industry and its stakeholders. In spite of this, companies often encounter challenges when embarking on modularization and pre-fabrication projects due to its unconventional nature. With doubts from stakeholders on mass-manufactured building materials, transportation and logistical issues as well as building standards compliance to local legislation for pre-fabricated buildings, many companies are still resistant against making the bold leap and take on these building methods.

Recognize the long-term benefits of modular construction and discover how your organization can manage and overcome negative perceptions through thought-provoking sessions shared by leading experts in the modular world.

Sean Murrie is the current CEO and a shareholder in Matrix Homes. He co-founded the company to address the housing shortage, and price rises that has seen less Kiwis own their own home than ever before. This was partly altruistic, and partly to be breaking new ground in how construction is undertaken in NZ.

The Contribution of Modular Construction and Its Effects Towards New Zealand

• The benefits of modular or off site construction, time saving, much reduced overall cost, less waste, less OSH issues

• The difficulties in getting modular accepted in NZ, whereas it is now common in many countries including US, China, Germany, Australia etc.

• The further opportunities of modular to help get more houses and building built due to it being cost effective and the effect of reducing the housing crisis in NZ

• An answer to the tourism sectors concerns over not enough accommodation for the anticipated growth

FairviewIn 1968, we began as a family-owned joinery business in Fairview, a small part of Timaru.

Nearly half a century later, we’re still proudly owned by that same Kiwi family. And the ingenuity and passion of hundreds of New Zealanders have helped shape and create the exceptional window and door solutions now available across our manufacturer network.

Our logo may have evolved over the years, but the passion that drives Fairview Systems is unchanging. It comes from our people, and of course, our customers. And our work and passion is reflected in the windows and doors in homes from Northland to Bluff.

Our TeamAcross New Zealand, an extensive network of Fairview manufacturers builds and installs the window and door solutions that bring your vision to life.

We’re one team, made up of independent businesses - and wherever we work, we’re still hands-on and driven by the same passion to go the extra mile for our customers.

From simple renovations, bespoke architectural homes to commercial builds, every project is different; but we also realise that every one is uniquely personal. Fairview manufacturers create hand crafted solutions specific to your needs - designed for New Zealand, backed by world-class quality.

For more information about our exceptional windows and doors visit fairviewwindows.co.nz.

Back then it was known as the NZ Institute of Draughtsmen. We are a membership organisation of people interested and practicing in design. This includes architectural and engineering designers within New Zealand and overseas. Today we are run by a board of directors (who are practitioners just like you). Membership is open to individuals who are interested or practicing in design. Our Members include self-employed Designers through to Members working within multinationals. Our members enjoy multi-channel communication with other like-minded individuals within the design industry; providing great support and networking.
