PHILLIPS de PURY & COMPANY
Founded in 1796, Phillips de Pury & Company is one of
the world’s leading art companies and a vital force in
today’s art world. Through its innovative exhibitions and
auctions, Phillips de Pury has established itself as a
tastemaker in contemporary art, design, photographs,
printed editions and jewelry. The company has offices
and representatives in twelve cities on three continents,
and is renowned for its beautiful and lavish catalogues,
dynamic architectural exhibition spaces, popular events
and record-breaking sales.
Led by Simon de Pury, a key figure in the art market and
one of the world’s most talented auctioneers, Phillips de
Pury formed a strategic partnership with Mercury Group
in 2008. Mercury, the leading retail luxury company in
Russia, acquired majority control of the company and
has made a significant investment in the firm to better
position Phillips de Pury to compete and take advantage
of exciting opportunities in the current art market.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN
It is in times of economic change that creativity and innovation are more necessary than
ever. Even during the height of the market over a year ago, we realized that whenever we held
special theme sales, we were not only generating extra interest, but also gaining incremental
business. So when the flow of consignments began to slow down, because it was seen to be
a bad time to sell, we decided to add 18 new theme sales in addition to our regular schedule
of sales.
This strategy has already begun to bear fruits with four successful sales in the fall of 2009
– NOW, LATIN AMERICA, MUSIC and NEW YORK NEW YORK. During 2010, we will hold
fourteen further theme sales, including AFRICA, SEX, JAPAN and FILM. These will act as a
complement to our core sales of Contemporary Art, Design, Photography and Editions.
For the past ten years we have established ourselves as the premier company for showcasing
contemporary art, design and photography and have become the undisputed market leaders
in cutting-edge art. Already known for producing the most beautiful catalogs in the industry,
we have decided to push the envelope even further, by creating a new, even larger catalog.
This allows us to show the artworks that are entrusted to us in their best possible light and to
add editorial contents that places them in a wider context.
It was at Phillips de Pury that during the past ten years, world record prices were established
for artists as varied as Marcel Duchamp, Francis Bacon, Donald Judd, Agnes Martin,
Ed Ruscha, Damien Hirst, Richard Prince, the Kabakovs, Takashi Murakami, Mark Bradford
and many others. Records were also broken in our rooms for works by designers such as Ron
Arad, Marc Newson, Ross Lovegrove and Zaha Hadid. We continue to achieve strong results
for great photographers such as Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon and Irving Penn, and have
set auction records for Idris Khan, Edward Burtynsky and Mario Testino among many others.
Now, more than ever, Phillips de Pury & Company is the place where you can buy tomorrow’s
blue chips today! This brochure is designed to give our clients the fullest information on our
exciting auction program for 2010.

The Editions department at Phillips de Pury & Company offers prints and objects produced in an
edition and spanning the 20th through 21st centuries. Twice a year, modern and contemporary
printmakers come together in one integrated catalogue. Particular attention is paid to 20th-century
modern masters, and to the important artists currently creating today’s relevant graphic works of
art. The department’s approach is based on an appreciation of collectors’ different needs to cross
various boundaries between artists, time periods and styles. The department also handles private
sales, collecting advice and various kinds of appraisals.

NOW will offer contemporary art, design, photography, and editions made since 2000. In the
years following the millennium, the world of contemporary art has seen a rapid expansion of work
drawing upon an increasingly wide variety of sources, disciplines and materials. From the paintings
of George Condo and the photographs of Cindy Sherman, to the sculpture of Rachel Harrison and
the multiples of Alex Katz, the foundations of 21st-century art are being laid today. For the NOW
sale, we are looking for artworks that represent this rich body of work and that, together, will play a
significant role in defining this new identity.

Phillips de Pury’s SEX auction will take the debate about the interplay of contemporary art and
sexuality a step further in presenting works that challenge our concepts of gender, sexual imagery
and desirability. This is an area which will be explored in all disciplines – in painting, printmaking,
photography and sculpture – and through the varied ways in which artists today, whose work we
are seeking for this auction, approach these issues: in the work of Thomas Ruff, for example, whose
Nudes series of photographs both set up and undercut our expectations in viewing pornography; or
in Richard Prince’s fetishized and eroticized appropriations of the Western cowboy, Diane Arbus’
portraits of the sexually marginalized, and the bold and sumptuous Pop nudes of Mel Ramos and
Tom Wesselmann that simultaneously attract and overwhelm one’s gaze.

While normally used as a financial term referring to the rapidly expanding economies of Brazil,
Russia, India and China, the acronym BRIC refers here to the burgeoning contemporary art
practices within these four countries. The work we are looking to consign to the BRIC sale will
bring them together at auction for the first time, and will feature some of the most inventive and
collected contemporary artists, designers and photographers working today, such as Beatriz
Milhazes from Brazil, Anish Kapoor of India, the Kabakovs from Russia, and Zeng Fanzhi of China.
In the common ground between them, as well as in their diversity, the works to be consigned to
BRIC will form a portrait of the increasingly global future of contemporary art. And for the first time
both the viewing and sale will take place at the Saatchi Gallery, attracting both new visitors and a
greater visibility of the work.

The AFRICA theme sale is defined by the distinct body of works, drawn from contemporary art,
design, editions and photography, which relate to Africa either in origin or influence. Crossing
boundaries between disciplines and media, this work is known for its exuberance, its political
commitment and its inventiveness, from the hugely successful metal tapestries of El Anatsui to the
documentary photographs of South Africa by David Goldblatt. The sale will reflect this range and
could include work like the sculpture of Yinka Shonibare, the rococo portraits of Kehinde Wiley, the
totems of Pascale Marthine Tayou, and many others.

Art of the 1980s was characterized by irony, appropriation, expressionism, neo-expressionism and
figurative art. It was also the decade in which the inventiveness and playfulness of Postmodernism
energized the visual arts, design and architecture. Today, the work of that time is much sought
after, and this sale aims to showcase the best of it in a careful selection of visual art, design,
photographs, and editions, including work by some of the great protagonists of that time, such as
Eric Fischl, David Salle and Julian Schnabel, as well as artists like Jack Goldstein whose careers
flourished during this period.

In September 2010, Phillips de Pury will gather a carefully selected group of works under the
theme of BLACK & WHITE. Black and white compositions, and black or white monochrome
works by leading artists are all sought for this auction. These may include pieces by those artists,
photographers and designers often inspired to work with a reduced chromatic palette – artists
such as Robert Longo, Amanda Levete, Kara Walker and Bernd & Hilla Becher. BLACK & WHITE
will also present works by artists who, using seemingly reduced forms, challenge the notion of
simplicity and produce works that reveal themselves not to be as ‘black & white’ as they might
appear. Robert Morris, Donald Judd, Sol Lewitt, Imi Knoebel and John McCracken are good
examples of artists whose use of minimal forms produce complex dialogues, and whose works may
also be considered for inclusion in this auction.

who are also artists such as David Bowie and Captain Beefheart, to photographs of musicians, to
art utilizing music as a theme, such as in the work of Christian Marclay and Jim Lambie, and music

The Sensation exhibition, which opened in London in 1997 before touring to Berlin and New York,
famously introduced onto the international scene a new generation of artists, known as the Young
British Artists, or YBAs, including Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst and Sarah Lucas, among others.
London came to be seen as the new and radical artistic centre. Since then, contemporary art in
Britain has flourished as never before, with a huge variety of work being done in diverse media,
such as in the conceptual work of Keith Tyson, the large and complex photographs of Idris Khan
and the radical sculptures of Rachel Whiteread. Collecting art, too, has increased in popularity
at all levels during this time. NOW in London will seek to reflect this richness of British art being
produced and collected today.
