CONSIDERING THE CASEAGAINST NYQUIST
by Brian DiDonato
Ten foes and the 9 1/2 furlongs of Saturday=s GI Preakness S.
stand between GI Kentucky Derby hero Nyquist (Uncle Mo) and
another Triple Crown try in three more weeks in New York.
While one could certainly envision ways in which the unbeaten
juvenile champion could be upset, most of those knocks fail to
withstand serious scrutiny.
Argument #1: There is an abundance of early speed signed on
here, and Nyquist tends to race on or near the lead.
With six other rivals having been in the first or second position
at the first call of their respective last races, the Preakness is
almost certain to feature a very quick early tempo. But Nyquist
is not a need-the-lead type, as evidenced by his Eclipse-clinching
victory in the Oct. 31 GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile. The Reddam
Racing colorbearer was as far back as eighth early behind a
crowded pace in that affair, and was even several spots behind
now deep closer and familiar foe Exaggerator (Curlin) before
kicking into gear and besting that one=s stablemate Swipe
(Birdstone). Exaggerator was fourth.
Argument #2: Two weeks between the Derby and Preakness
is a short turnaround.
While higher-class horses in the modern era rarely return in
two weeks, note that there was only a 19-day gap between
Nyquist=s wins in last September=s GI Del Mar Futurity and
GI FrontRunner S. Cont. p3
>MAGGIE= LEADS HOME ROMANS 1-2 IN BES Less than two weeks ago, trainer Dale Romans was involved in
a car accident not far from Churchill Downs so serious that one
of the injured passengers remains hospitalized. In Friday
afternoon=s GII Black-Eyed Susan S. at Pimlico Race Course, Mike
Tarp=s homebred Go Maggie Go (Ghostzapper) provided the
conditioner with just what the doctor ordered, a pace-pressing
defeat of stable companion Ma Can Do It (Majesticperfection)
just 14 days after a troubled fourth-place effort in the
GI Kentucky Oaks.
AI feel no pain right now, so everything is good,@ Romans
commented. AI know she=s the best I=ve ever had. She=s doing
things horses aren=t supposed to do. It=s only four starts in and
she=s won two Grade IIs and fourth in the Kentucky Oaks. What
more can you ask for?@
The disappointment of the race was Oaks runner-up Land
Over Sea (Bellamy Road), who could do no better than sixth.

Exaggerator is tended to by Keith Desormeaux Friday | Horsephotos
Preakness S. cont. from p1
Plus the two-week gap was no issue for any of the last four winning Derby favorites--Big Brown (Boundary) (2008), California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) (2014) and American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) (2015). Trainer Doug O=Neill has also proven plenty adept at keeping a Derby winner in form for two weeks--
Reddam=s I=ll Have Another (Flower Alley) earned a significant Beyer Speed Figure top of 109 when completing the
Derby/Preakness double in 2012.
AHe was pretty good before the Derby and he=s pretty good now,@ O=Neill told the Pimlico notes team. AHe had five weeks to prepare from the Florida Derby to the Kentucky Derby. This is a quick turnaround. He=s showing all signs that he=s as good as ever.@
Argument #3: There=s wet weather in the forecast, and sloppy tracks sometimes yield surprising results.
Nyquist has never raced on a muddy or sloppy surface, but the Gulfstream ground was labeled Agood@ when he aired in the
GI Xpressbet.com Florida Derby Apr. 2. His dam also never tried a wet strip, but sire Uncle Mo earned a gaudy 118 Beyer Speed Figure for his win in the 2011 GII Kelso H. over a muddy Belmont strip. Cont. p4

Argument #4: Exaggerator was gaining on Nyquist in the
Derby, and the circumstances of the Preakness could help the
Keith Desormeaux trainee bridge the 1 1/4-length gap.
This is likely the strongest case against Nyquist, as late-running
Exaggerator would certainly benefit from a meltdown and is at
least more proven on a wet strip. He bided his time far off a hot
pace in the GI Santa Anita Derby, only to splash home a
6 1/4-length victor, earning a 103 Beyer--the same figure
Nyquist received for the Derby. But Nyquist had already beaten
him three times prior to that, was right up on a solid Derby pace
and never let Exaggerator get anywhere close to him on the
gallop out.
Argument #5: Several of the Anew shooters@ have upside, and
could produce a performance that beats the champ. Stradivari
(Medaglia d=Oro) has won a pair of nine-panel races by a
combined 25 3/4 lengths, and earned >TDN Rising Star= status
for his 14 1/2-length drubbing of Keeneland allowance foes
Apr. 17. Collected (City Zip) has finished worse than second just
once in his six-race career, and was a convincing winner of the
GIII Lexington S. last time out Apr. 16.
The Preakness is almost always won by a horse coming out of
the Derby. The last time it wasn=t was in 2009, when
GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d=Oro)
may very well have found herself in
the winner=s circle in Louisville if her
connections had decided to wait one
more day.
Bob Baffert, trainer of Collected
and, of course, last year=s Triple
Crown winner American Pharoah,
has six wins in the Preakness, but
Baffert and Speedway Stables' none with a horse who didn=tcompete in the Derby. AI=ve come in
here a little weird many years,@
Baffert joked. AI know what it feels like. I=ve been through it so
many times. It=s the first time coming here after a Triple Crown.
It was weird going to the Derby, a little bit. It=s something that
I=m just coming in here with a horse that didn=t run in the Derby.
I=ve never won it with a horse that I didn=t run in the Derby. So
it=s a different feel. It=s uncharted waters.@

GI Kentucky Derby - After seeing the early splits and watchinghim begin to wind up entering the far turn, I thought Creatorwas going to come with a really big run in the stretch. He,however, made his own trouble as they turned for home and itwas game over from that point, finishing 13th. I guess that=salways the risk you run when landing on such a deep closer inthe Derby, though. Total: $1862.50.
GI Xpressbet.com Preakness S. - I=m fairly shocked thatDiDonato even found time to handicap this race as he=s beencompletely preoccupied with pinhooking Belmont S. admissiontickets since the Derby. In all seriousness, I do agree with him onhow this race projects. Nyquist (Uncle Mo) and Exaggerator(Curlin) are by far the class of this group and both look ready tofire another big shot. Before heading down to Maryland, I wasconvinced that Nyquist was far superior in his head-to-headbattles with Exaggerator and the latter wouldn=t be able to turnthe tables. But, with heavy rain in the forecast and tons of earlyspeed signed on, this may be just the perfect storm for thehandsome dark bay to finally do it. Will be using longshot CherryWine (Paddy O=Prado) underneath in the gimmicks, too.Selection: #5 Exaggerator (3-1).
GI Kentucky Derby - I got higher and higher on Outwork as hegot completely lost on the tote, but I guess everyone else knewsomething I didn=t. He showed speed before checking out of it tobe 14th... So much for that. Total: $1437.50.
GI Xpressbet.com Preakness S. - There=s a ton of pace signed onhere, and I suppose the track condition adds another wrinkle, but I=m with the rest of the world in thinking Nyquist (Uncle Mo)and Exaggerator (Curlin) will run one-two. Underneath thefavorites, however, things could get interesting. The average $1superfecta the last four times the Derby winner doubled up inthe Preakness was a surprisingly high $924, with AmericanPharoah topping a super that paid over $1900 for a buck 12months ago. The flashier pair of Collected (City Zip) andStradivari (Medaglia d=Oro) feel a little up against it to me, so I=lluse Cherry Wine (Paddy O=Prado), Awesome Speed (AwesomeAgain), Lani (Tapit) and Fellowship (Awesome of Course) to fillout the third and fourth spots. Nyquist will be on top of mytickets at a 2:1 ratio to Exaggerator, but I=ll definitely use bothon top. Chalking out on the win end here, but don=t worry--Iplan on beating Nyquist and Sherack with a longshot in threemore weeks. Selection: #3 Nyquist (3-5).
TDN=s Steve Sherack and Brian DiDonato will make $50 Win/Place bets on each Kentucky Derby prep and Triple Crown race. The handicapper with the highest bankroll after the Belmont Stakes wins. Scratches will result in the post time favorite.

TRIO OF GRADE I WINNERS TOP DEEP DIXIEby Ben Massam
A forecast for steady rain in the Baltimore area Saturday did
little to dampen enthusiasm for the GII Longines Dixie S., which
attracted a field of 13 veteran turfers entered for the
1 1/16-mile test. Although the GI Preakness S. remains the main
event to be held one hour later, the Dixie boasts significant
quality of its own, with three Grade I winners amongst the field.
One top-level performer who should appreciate a rain-
softened turf course is Jim and Susan Hill=s Grand Arch (Arch),
making his 2016 debut after over six months spent on the
sidelines. The 7-year-old gelding became a Grade I winner with a
narrow score over the
yielding Keeneland turf
in the GI Shadwell Turf
Mile last October and
followed with a third-
place run over that same
course and distance in
the GI Breeders= Cup
Mile 28 days later. After
wintering at his owners=
Margaux Farm, Grand
Arch has been working steadily dating back to mid-March in
preparation for this return to action.
AHe's a horse, if you look back over his form, some of his best
races have been when he's fresh,@ trainer Brian Lynch told the
Pimlico notes team. AHopefully, it's a comeback race and it'll kick
off a good campaign ahead of him this year.@
Like Grand Arch, St. Elias Stable and West Point
Thoroughbreds= Ring Weekend (Tapit) returns from an extended
layoff in the Dixie. Unraced since capturing the
GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile S. in March 2015, the Graham Motion
trainee answered any questions about his ability to perform off
a layoff when he won that race off four months on the sidelines.
Motion has demonstrated prowess of his own with layoff
runners, recently saddling Miss Temple City (Temple City) to a
score over male foes in the GI Maker=s 46 Mile S. after a half-
year break.
Colts Neck Stables homebred Force the Pass (Speightstown),
winner of last July=s GI Belmont Derby, completes the trio of
Grade I winners in the field. The consistent colt followed his
Belmont Derby win with a pair of third-place finishes in the
GI Secretariat S. and GII Commonwealth Derby to close out
2015, and recently returned from a respite to check in third
again as the favorite in Gulfstream=s GIII Appleton S. over a good
turf course. Force the Pass was entered in the GIII Fort Marcy S.
at Belmont May 7 and subsequently scratched due to yielding
turf conditions--something that he could possibly encounter
Saturday as well.
AIt looked like... the turf was going to be soft [at Belmont], so
we decided to skip it,@ said trainer Alan Goldberg, who won the
Dixie in 2010 with Strike a Deal
(Smart Strike). AWe decided to
run down here. He's doing very
well.@
Hall of Fame conditioner Bill
Mott has won the Dixie three
times previously, and will saddle
both GII Muniz Memorial H.
winner Take the Stand (Arg)
(Not For Sale {Arg}) and two-time
graded stakes winner Long on Value (Value Plus) in this year=s
running. The former has rounded into form in 2016 with a
runner-up effort in the GIII Tampa Bay S. prior to his win in New
Orleans Mar. 26, while the latter has gone winless since a score
in the GIII Canadian Turf S. in March 2015--including a fourth-
place run behind recent GIII Fort Marcy S. winner Ironicus
(Distorted Humor) in last year=s renewal of this event.
Mark Casse has a pair of multiple graded stakes winners for
the Dixie in Za Approval (Ghostzapper) and Conquest Typhoon
(Stormy Atlantic). The race also marks a first spin over the turf
for >TDN Rising Star= El Kabeir (Scat Daddy), winner of three
graded events on dirt during his first two years at the track. The
John Terranova II trainee tuned up for Dixie with a five-furlong
breeze over the Belmont turf in 1:01.54 (3/13) May 15.

Go Maggie Go | Horsephotos
Black-Eyed Susan S. cont.
Sent off at a generous 7-1 for her six-furlong debut over the
Gulfstream main track Mar. 13, Go Maggie Go overcame some
bumping at the break and cleared off to score by four solid
lengths over Conquest Serenade (Unbridled=s Song), who not
only won a Keeneland
maiden in her next
start, but also added a
Churchill allowance
May 6. Tested
immediately for class
in the GII Gulfstream
Park Oaks, Go Maggie
Go was the 4-1 second
choice to then-
undefeated Off the
Tracks (Curlin), but was given a perfectly judged ride by Luis
Saez to best Paola Queen (Flatter) by 2 1/4 lengths, with 4-5 Off
the Tracks third. Set an even stiffer task in the GI Kentucky Oaks
a fortnight back, Go Maggie Go was off in a tangle and was
forced to settle further back than connections had hoped. She
swung widest for the drive and ran on well to be fourth, about a
neck behind Land Over Sea in second, and those two would
dominate the Black-Eyed Susan wagering.
It was not the cleanest of dispatches at Old Hilltop for Go
Maggie Go, who bobbled as the gates flew, but she recovered
quickly to hold a position at the inside as John Velazquez hit the
gas early on the stretching-out Kinsley Kisses and the opening
quarter was up in a moderate :23.49. Never appearing
uncomfortable while pinned down inside, Go Maggie Go
countered every move of Kinsley Kisses in the middle furlongs,
and the pace was decidedly in favor of those nearer the front, as
the six-furlong split of 1:13.49 was always going to make life
difficult on the swoopers. The Pletcher trainee was clinging on
for dear life as heads were turned for home, but Go Maggie Go
put that one away for good a furlong and a half from home and
though she got to wandering a bit late, was never in any sort of
danger. Ma Can Do It enjoyed the run of the race and stayed on
to complete a $202 Romans exacta, while Dothraki Queen (Pure
Prize) got home well for fourth.
AShe should have been closer to the pace in the Oaks,@ Romans
submitted. AShe crossed her legs and when they were
straightening her up they sprung the latch and she just got left
behind. That=s what showed me the quality filly that she is,
because she had been close to the lead in her two previous
starts and she got all the dirt and still came running. When she
left there clean today, I didn=t think they were going to beat
her.@
Trainer Doug O=Neill was not unduly dismayed by the
performance of Land Over Sea and can take solace in the fact
that he has a little something to look forward to Saturday.
AJust a rough trip. She didn=t break real good,@ he commented.
AThey kind of went slow early and she was a victim of a rough
trip. Thank God she came back good and Mario [Gutierrez] came
back good. We=ll live to fight another day. We=re just fired up
about [the Preakness].@

Noble Bird | Horsephotos
Pimlico Special S. cont.
Pounded into odds-on favoritism to bounce back off a latest
eighth as the chalk in the GII Alysheba S. two Fridays back, the
chestnut made no mistake under a well-rated ride from Julien
Leparoux.
Runner-up in the 2015 Alysheba, Noble Bird managed to hold
out the comebacking Lea (First Samurai) by a neck in the
GI Stephen Foster H. last June, but raced too freely in the
GI Whitney H. Aug. 8, finished a tailed-off last of nine and took
the rest of the year off. Noble Bird proved tough to handle yet
again when heavily favored in a Feb. 21 Oaklawn allowance,
finishing a lackluster sixth, but he was allowed to dictate terms
in Keeneland=s GIII Ben Ali S. Apr. 16 and led into the final
furlong before dropping a 1 1/4-length decision to the in-form
Eagle (Candy Ride {Arg}). But the 5-year-old was his own worst
enemy again in the Alysheba and was looking for redemption in
the Special.
Noble Bird appeared to studder-step ever so slightly when the
gates flew and that allowed Warrioroftheroses to cross to the
early lead, as Leparoux was content to let that longshot go. Sent
up outside that rival
entering the clubhouse
turn, Noble Bird
worked his way down
to the fence and was
able to slacken the
pace in the middle
stages. Cruising along
under a nice hold as
the field reached the
far turn after six
furlongs in 1:12.12, Noble Bird was coddled along into the lane,
was shaken up at the three-sixteenths marker and was under
left-handed urging to keep his mind on the task at hand down to
the wire.
AIt was the exact opposite of what happened to him last time,@
related winning trainer Mark Casse. ABefore his last start, I told a
couple news people that I=ve been doing this for 37 years and
he=s one of the toughest horses I=ve ever trained. After his last
race, >No, he=s the toughest.= He makes good riders look bad.
He=s so sensitive about his mounts. As a 2-year-old, I told Mr.
Oxley that this horse was going to win the Kentucky Derby,
that=s the ability that he displayed.@

While likely none of the owners in Saturday=s second jewel of the

successful business careers of their own.
Matt Rybaltowski, Forbes
WITH $1 MILLION INVESTMENT IN PEGASUS
WORLD CUP, RUIS FAMILY LOOKING TO GET
BACK INTO RACING IN A BIG WAYBy Bill Finley
Mick Ruis Jr, the jockey, and Mick Ruis Sr., the trainer, had
their moments in the sport, but none that suggested they=d ever
play the game at its highest level. The trainer had a small string
in Southern California and his son had won a handful of stakes
races, but none worth more than $100,000. Yet, when the
names of those putting up $1 million to
secure a starting spot in next year=s
Pegasus World Cup was announced
there was Ruis Racing right along side
giants like Paul Reddam, Coolmore, the
Stronach Group and Starlight Racing.
Yet, the Ruises believe their time will
come, and soon. The father-son team
that left the sport is nothing like the
father-son team that is back and
determined to make a big impact. They
may not yet have a horse worthy of
competing in the $12 million race. They
do have a plan.
It was when the Ruises decided to leave racing that their
financial fortunes turned. Mick Ruis Jr. suffered a setback when
his close friend and roommate, the former Churchill Downs
announcer Luke Kruytbosch, died in 2008. The jockey decided
he needed a break from the sport and while away he gained 15
pounds and was unable to get his weight back down to a level
where he could resume riding. Right around the same time, his
father was looking to get out of training and do something
different. He told the son there was an opportunity for the two
of them to buy a construction company that specialized in
repairing naval vessels and wanted to know if he wanted in.
AMy father called me about a construction company he was
looking into buying that did navy ship repairs,@ Ruis Jr. said. AIt
was a small business based in San Diego that he thought we
could get going. I was thinking I could probably make about
$200,000 a year.@
Eight years later, father and son sold a controlling interest
in the company, American Scaffold, for, Ruis Jr., said, Aa substantial sum of money.@
Having more money than they ever dreamed they would have,
both decided to get back into racing, but in different roles. Now
weighing 175 pounds, Ruis=s riding days were a thing of the past
and his father did not want to train. Instead, they decided they
would work together to build a quality stable. Their trainer
would be still another member of the family, 25-year-old
Shelbe. Cont. p13

Ruis Family cont.
AWe still had a passion for horse racing and so did my younger
sister, Shelbe,@ Ruis Jr. said. AWe decided to invest in horses and
get something going with her. My dad and I want to see my
sister become one of the biggest and best trainers in the U.S.
We now have money to get her quality horses.@
With the help of advisors Kyle Kaenel and David Meah, the
Ruises spent about $2 million on eight 2-year-olds at the recent
sales and have claimed a handful of horses. The ex-jockey said
they are also actively trying to purchase quality horses privately,
based both here and overseas. Shelbe Ruis won her first career
race on May 15, a maiden special weight race at Santa Anita
with Rockport Babe (Rockport Harbor).
AThe end game is we want to be a very successful stable, a
household name like Zayat, ARuis Jr. said. AIt=s a blessing that we
were able to be in the game before we struck it rich. We were
able to grind it out and we made mistakes along the way and
learned how hard it is. We learned a lot and now we can come
back and attack it differently, more strategically.@
The Ruis team knows it=s unlikely they will have a horse for the
2017 Pegasus World Cup, but they wanted to secure a spot for
the future and also believe putting up the money for next year
was a smart move.
AWe don=t have a horse to run in it yet,@ the former jockey
said. AWe=re looking at it more as an investment. We have three
options. We could sell the spot and make money on it. We could
keep the spot and team up with someone with a good horse and
maybe split the purse. We could go out and look to find
something to buy that can compete in the race.@
One possible strategy would be to sell the spot to B. Wayne
Hughes, who did not buy in even though he might own the best
horse in the country in Beholder (Henny Hughes).
AGary Stevens is a good friend and I actually reached out to
him about Beholder,@ Ruis Jr. said. AI also rode a few horses for
Mr. Hughes. You never know, but right now I am sure they=re
more concerned about her next few races. What we do with the
spot is the type of thing that probably won=t come to fruition
until we get much closer to the race.@
When riding, Ruis=s biggest win came in the $100,000 La Habra
S. in 2004. As an owner and a part of Ruis Racing, he=s aiming for
much more.
ONE-HORSE STABLE OR NOT, JEFF WEISS
WANTS TO BE PART OF PEGASUS WORLD
CUP By Bill Finley
Jeff Weiss=s Rosedown Racing has campaigned all of two horses, but the owner loves the sport and the idea of the Pegasus World Cup and just had to be part of it.
Weiss was one of the more unfamiliar names on the list of owners who ponied up $1 million to secure a spot in next
year=s inaugural $12-million Pegasus World Cup, but he never hesitated to do so. In fact, he says he was the first person to commit.
AI=m excited about the whole thing,@ said Weiss, who is in
the commercial real estate business in Florida. AI=m very
excited to be involved with Frank Stronach because he=s a
winner. Frank Stronach loves the industry and he=s trying to
do good things for owners. That=s the type of person I want to
be involved with.@
Weiss=s Bashart (War Front), was the winner of the 2013 GII With Anticipation S. at Saratoga. Campaigning a top
horse like that gave him a desire to
get back to the winner=s circle in top
level races and he=s trying to make
that happen by breeding quality
mares. He says he has four and is
breeding them to some of the most
expensive stallions in the business. His
hope is that one of those mares will
some day produce a horse good
enough to warrant a shot in the $12
million race.
"I'm trying to breed horses that will hopefully be good enough to get into
the Pegasus,@ he said.
He realizes he won=t have anything for the race in 2017, but
still wants to be involved.
AI=d like to stay in the race. I would like to partner up with
somebody who has a great horse and could win,@ he said. AI=d
like make some kind of arrangement with someone.@
Weiss said he already has an owner in mind that he=d like to
team up with, one with a top horse and one who did not put up
the $1 million. He declined to say who he had in mind, but said
he plans to meet with the individual at the Preakness. Stay
tuned.

FRED BRADLEY PASSES AWAY Fred Bradley, who bred and raced the likes of two-time
champion female sprinter Groupie Doll (Bowman=s Band) and
the popular gelding Brass Hat (Prized), passed away May 20 in
Whitmore, Kentucky. He was 85 years of age.
The father of trainer William ABuff@ Bradley, with whom he
raced Groupie Doll in partnership, Fred Bradley was a retired Air
Force general, attorney and Kentucky state
senator. In 1997, Bradley signed for the Silver
Deputy mare Deputy Doll, going to $25,000 at
that year=s Keeneland September sale. The
mare=s fourth and final produce became
Groupie Doll, who shot to national prominence
as a 4-year-old in 2012, winning the GI Vinery
Madison S. and the GI Humana Distaff S. before
closing out a dominating season with a
comprehensive victory in the GI Breeders= Cup
Filly & Mare Sprint. She successfully defended
her title in 2013, was sold for $3.1 million at the
Keeneland November Sale a few days later and
is now one of the stars of the broodmare band
at Mandy Pope=s Whisper Hill Farm.
Twelve months before acquiring Deputy Doll,
Bradley needed just $5,000 to purchase Brassy
(Dixie Brass) at the September sale and it was her second foal
that paid that bill and then some. Brass Hat, who broke his
maiden in stakes company as a 3-year-old, became a six-time
graded-stakes winner over the course of a 40-start career,
highlighted by a sloppy-track score in the
2006 GI Donn H. Also a multiple graded winner and twice Grade
I-placed on the turf, Brass Hat retired with earnings of nearly
$2.2 million, a total that would have been much higher but for a
disputed drug positive that cost Brass Hat second-place money
in the 2006 G1 Dubai World Cup.
Funeral and memorial services are pending.
By Dan Liebman
A few years ago, we made the drive from Central Kentucky to
Ellis Park to see one of our fillies make her first start.
There, sitting in a chair on the apron and wearing a big straw
hat, was Fred Bradley.
Fred started running bets for his Dad at the tender age of six at
what was then Dade Park (now Ellis). He had been to Ellis every
summer since.
On Friday, Fred died at the age of 85, having suffered from the
effects of dementia for the past several years.
My father met Fred in the late 1940s, when Dad was attending
the University of Kentucky Law School and Fred was an
undergraduate. They remained friends the rest
of their lives.
Fred was the epitome of a Asmall@ breeder,
developing his Indian Ridge Farm outside my
hometown of Frankfort, KY. He refused to pay
much for stud fees, foaled the mares himself,
and raced most of the offspring, in recent years
with his son, Buff, as trainer.
Racing fans recall the two stars of the stable,
champion Groupie Doll and the grand gelding
Brass Hat, the latter now being ridden in horse
shows by Fred=s granddaughter.
Fred bought the dams of Brass Hat and
Groupie Doll as yearling, Brassy for $5,000 and
Deputy Doll for $25,000.
Fred, of course, was much more than a horse
breeder. He flew jet fighters, rising to the rank
of general; owned a small trucking firm;
practiced law; and was elected county judge and state senator.
And despite those accomplishments, he was at home on the
apron at Ellis Park and as comfortable watching a cheap claimer
as he was one of his stakes horses.
A couple of years ago, we had the winter of discontent for
breeders. A yearling filly broke her hip and despite attempts to
save her, was put down. A mare died of colic; another of EPM.
Fred brought a friend into our restaurant and insisted I go
through it again. I recounted having the filly and one of the
mares in a Central Kentucky vet clinic at the same time, in slings
in adjoining stalls. I told of the mare that was put down after
suffering a colic attack.
APeople have no idea how hard this business is,@ Fred said. AI
don=t mean to make light of your terrible run of luck. I just think
people need to hear how hard it is, and how it affects you.@
In the restaurant, we have a table over which hang photos of
Brass Hat and Groupie Doll. We call it the ABradley Corner.@ Fred
never sat there.
(Come to think of it, Buff never does either.)
Fred was down to earth, unpretentious. It would not have
been his style to sit there.
Our next photo to hang there will be one of Fred.
Hopefully someone has one of him at Ellis Park.

The everlasting Ben=s Cat earned yet another remarkable,
last-second victory in the Jim McKay Turf Sprint S., capturing the
Black-Eyed Susan day staple for the fourth consecutive year and
fifth time overall. Coming into this year=s renewal off a neck win
in a May 1 Laurel allowance, in which he got up in the last jump
despite an extremely wide journey, the old war horse was away
a half-step slowly as the second choice. Running fourth along
the rail as favored Rocket Heat rattled off a blistering :21.46
quarter-mile, he moved to within two lengths of the lead at the
three-sixteenths pole and came out one path once Rocket Heat
began to tire around the sixteenth marker. Splitting the
pacesetter and closing Spring to the Sky, Ben=s Cat burst through
in the final 70 yards to earn his 32nd career victory by a neck.
AI was worried. He was back and that other horse was running
his eyeballs out setting a real fast pace,@ King Leatherbury said.
AI knew he=d be kicking in, but I didn=t think he=d be able to catch
him. He fired right at the end, like he always does. That=s his
running style. He=s a great horse, that=s all.@
The 83-year-old Hall of Famer was emotional after the race,
reflecting on Ben=s Cat=s longevity and his personal connection
to the 10-year-old gelding.
AGood horses, all the time they come up, but they don=t last.
Fans have a favorite horse and a year or two later, they=re
gone,@ Leatherbury said. AHere, he just goes and goes and goes
and that=s what makes him so popular. He=s still around after all
this time. It brings tears to my eyes. It=s just amazing. That=s
Ben=s Cat. It=s my salvation, really. That=s why I=m still here.@

SOUTHERN RING (f, 4, Speightstown--Seeking the Ring {MSW,
$314,515}, by Seeking the Gold) finished second in a key heat
won by subsequent SW and GSP Elusive Collection (Elusive
Quality) on the main track here last August, and aired by 5 3/4
lengths when switched to the lawn Sept. 18. She returned to the
then-Polytrack to annex the Ruling Angel S. at short odds Oct.
17, and was 2-5 returning to the turf and stretching out for the
first time. Always in control of things, the Sam-Son homebred
held sway by a comfortable 1 3/4-length margin. Take Back Ya
Poils (Where=s the Ring) was second. The winner=s dam is out of
GSW and GISP Radiant Ring (Halo), making her a full-sister to
Canadian champion 3-year-old filly Catch the Ring and a half to
Canadian champion 2-year-old filly Catch the Thrill (A.P. Indy).

+IADORAKID (f, 3, Lemon Drop Kid--Torreadora, by El Prado
{Ire}) showed a slow, but steady series of drills first at Palm
Meadows and then over the local Tapeta, and was dismissed at
8-1 for a solid first-out barn. Unhurried early, the dark bay
settled in towards the back of the field while in between horses.
Still left with lots to do as they straightened, she tipped out into
the clear and kicked past rivals under energetic encouragement
to get up by a neck. Laurendale (Strut the Stage) was second.
The winner hails from the deep, and extremely productive
female family of Dance Smartly, Smart Strike, et al. Idorakid has
a 2-year-old full-brother named Bitterest Pill. Torreadora

SHAMARDAL COLT TOPSSTRONG BREEZE-UP
By Daithi Harvey Trade at the Goresbridge Breeze-Up sale on Friday took a little
while to warm up, but when it did spring into action business
remained solid throughout the day. The 183 juveniles to sell
grossed €5,289,500, compared to 175 sold for €4,608,500 last
year. The average was up 9.7% to €28,904, while the median
dipped 5.9% to €16,000. The clearance rate was 78%, compared
to 86% last year. The sale broke a previous records when lot 65
exited the ring having sold to Eamonn Reilly of BBA Ireland for
€270,000, eclipsing the previous top-price for this sale by
€100,000. The son of Shamardal was offered by Willie Browne's
Mocklershill and represented an excellent pinhook, having cost
the Grangebarry Partnership 30,000gns as a yearling at
Tattersalls October Book 1. Reilly was pushed all the way by
Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock and commented, "He is
a fine horse and breezed very well. He has been bought for a
longstanding client, Maura Gittins, and he will be trained in
England, though I'm not sure yet by who."
The first horse to make six figures on the day was lot 38, a son
of Invincible Spirit (Ire) (Green Desert) offered by Oghill House
Stud and sold for €160,000. The colt went the way of Adam
Driver, who fought off the attentions of David Redvers after Ger
Lyons had opened proceedings with an audacious bid of
€100,000. Cont. p2
HOLLER ROYAL ASCOT-BOUND Godolphin’s Holler (Aus) (Commands {Aus}) is headed forRoyal Ascot’s G1 Diamond Jubilee S. after pleasing connectionswith a second-place finish in a Randwick barrier trial Friday. “That was all I wanted him to do, have a nice hit-out and stayout of trouble,” said trainer John O’Shea. “He’s got a lot ofresidual fitness. He’ll have another gallop in about a week whichwill leave us a bit to work with when we get to England.” Holler won the 1300-metre G1 Canterbury S. at Randwick Mar.5 and was last seen finishing a short-head second in MooneeValley’s G1 William Reid S. Mar. 24. He is the lone Australianentrant for Royal Ascot. “We’re looking at following the same course as with BrazenBeau last year and go for the Diamond Jubilee,” said Godolphin’sHenry Plumptre. “It’s a solid six furlongs but he’s won at Group 1level in Australia at 1300 metres [6 1/2 furlongs], so we thinkhe’ll be best suited at that trip.”

Shamardal Colt Tops Strong Breeze-Up cont. from p1
Oghill's Hugh and Pat Hyland, who had twice bought back the
Invincible Spirit colt in sales
rings, for €75,000 as a
weanling and 14,000gns last
year, were delighted with the
result, with Hugh
commenting, "We have a lot
of the family at home, I bred
the dam and Pat actually
bought her back cheaply as I
had enough of the family
already. The mare is in foal to Born To Sea, so it will be a similar
cross to this lad."
Driver, a vet by trade, buys under Global Equine Group, and he
made another significant purchase a short time later when
signing for lot 49 from Grove Stud. A smart breeze and recent
pedigree updates courtesy of his half-sister Squash (GB)
(Pastoral Pursuits {GB}) saw the son of Kyllachy (GB) make
€155,000, a nice return on his 32,000gns yearling price. Driver
was buying on behalf of a client from Abu Dhabi, and he
commented, "They are two nice horses and they will go to
Newmarket, although we haven't decided on a trainer yet. They
both breezed well; I didn't time them. I prefer to assess them
physically as opposed to rely on the clock. Hopefully they will go
on and do well."
Jim McCartan has had some good days in the sale ring, and his
Gaybrook Lodge offered the only Pivotal (GB) juvenile in the
catalogue. He was duly rewarded when Alex Elliott signed the
buyer's sheet for lot 74 for €150,000. The colt's dam, Asaawir
(GB) (Royal Applause), has already produced two stakes
performers, and he showed a good return on the 30,000gns
invested by McCartan at Tattersalls last October. Elliott bought
the horse for owner Bill Gredley, and commented, "He is a
beautiful horse and he did an exceptional breeze; I reckon he
did the fourth-fastest time. He looks really athletic and came out
of his breeze in great shape."
David Redvers and the Qatar team didn't take long to get on
the buyers list, also striking early in the day for lot 40 from
Tally-Ho Stud. The Kodiac (GB) (Danehill) colt was knocked down
for €100,000, with Sheikh Fahad keen to win the battle for the
colt on his first visit to Goresbridge. Cont. p3

Shamardal Colt Tops Strong Breeze-Up cont.
They subsequently added lot 76 to their haul, a filly by Dark
Angel (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) that cost €135,000, and David
Redvers commented, "This sale is a credit to Martin Donohoe.
Each year it has grown in quality and it really has gone from
strength-to-strength.
The market is solid,
we've been
underbidders on quite a
few so we're happy to
have gotten the ones we
did." The team's
spending didn't end
there as they also
landed lot 127, a
Requinto (Ire) (Dansili
{GB}) colt from
Thomond O'Mara's
Knockanglass Stables for
€165,000, which marked
a return on his €3,000
purchase price by
Kilronan at Goffs
February this year.
Father and son duo Peter and Ross Doyle got in on the action
when going to €150,000 to secure lot 155 from Johnny Collins's
Brown Island Stables. The colt by First Defence is a Keeneland
graduate, where he was bought by Chad Schumer for $35,000
last September and continues the good run of success of
American-bred horses at European breeze-up sales this year.
The colt is destined to wear recent Classic-winning colours, with
Doyle senior commenting, “He's for Al Shaqab Racing and goes
to Richard Hannon. He is a lovely individual and did an
impressive breeze. We thought he was one of the nicest horses
in the sale."
Stroud Coleman
were under-bidders
last year on Bear
Cheek (Ire) (Kodiac
{GB}), and when
Tally-Ho offered the
Group 3 winner's
half-sister by Sir
Prancelot (Ire)
(Tamayuz {GB}), Matt
Coleman was keen not to lose out on the well-bred filly.
Coincidentally, she was catalogued as lot 110 and it took a bid of
€110,000 to buy her, with Coleman revealing, "She has been
bought for an owner of Robert Cowell, and hopefully she can
emulate her sister." Coleman later teamed up with Harry Dunlop
to buy lot 169, a filly by Spirit One (Fr) (Anabaa Blue {Fr}) who is
eligible for French premiums and cost €66,000. The sale was
another pinhooking homerun for Mary Reynolds and Ambrose
O'Mullane of Ardglass Stables. The pair bought the filly for only
€4,000 at Arqana last October, and it follows their sale of a Le
Havre (Ire) colt, Pouvoir Magique (Fr), that made 300,000gns at
the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze-Up sale.
The innovation of beaming the sale live to the owners' lounge
at Kranji Racecourse certainly bore fruit as lot 18 was knocked
down to Hong Kong-based owner Peter Lau. The colt by Paddy
O'Prado was pinhooked by BBA Ireland for $20,000 at
Keeneland last September
and Lau, who traveled to
Singapore to avail of the
online bidding facility,
eventually fended off
trainer Michael Halford to
secure the colt for
€85,000. The colt will be
pre-trained on The
Curragh for a period
before going to Singapore-
based trainer C T Kuah.
Michael O'Callaghan has
an exciting weekend
ahead with runners in
both Irish Classics, one of
them Blue De Vega (Ger)
(Lope De Vega {Ire}), a horse he bought at Goresbridge last year
from Tally-Ho Stud for €75,000. O'Callaghan will be hoping
lightning can strike twice as he bought lot 60 from the same
vendors and for the same price. The colt is by Dandy Man (Ire)
and a half-brother to the German Group 3 winner Donnerschlag
(GB) (Bahamian Bounty [GB}). O'Callaghan said he was glad to
get him and commented, "He is a lovely loose mover, by a sire I
like. The vendors have been lucky for me, the price has been
lucky for me and I was bidding from the same spot as last year,
so let's hope history repeats itself.”
Goresbridge boss Martin Donohoe was understandably thrilled
with the sales results and said, "To sell a horse for €270,000 is a
great achievement for the company, and I'd like to thank all the
vendors, purchasers and underbidders that contributed to such
a strong sale. I have no doubt some top-class horses will emerge
from it and we look forward to building on the success in the
coming years."

Hometown? Kanturk, Co. Cork, Ireland.
How did you end up where you are now? Somewhat
unintentionally. I had graduated from University and was
planning to return to the US for more work experience. Christy
Grassick suggested that I might enjoy a short stint in Australia,
so with a degree of apprehension, I travelled down here. That
was 8 years ago. I find the relentless nature of the Australasian
racing and breeding industry very stimulating.
What have you found to be the major difference between
racing/breeding in Australia and your home country? The idea
of the ‘narrative’ of racing in Britain and Ireland seems to have
been discussed regularly in recent years. In Australia, the
‘narrative’ of racing is incredibly easy
to follow and horse racing is part of
the social fabric of Australia as a
result. Each and every Saturday of the
year, the best racing is hosted the
capital cities of the major states--
Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane,
Adelaide and Perth. Consequentially it
is easy for participants to engage with
the sport, aswell as being relatively
easy to promote as a spectacle to the
consumer. The coverage in mainstream media, both print and
television, is incredible, so the exposure of the sport to the
general public is extensive on a weekly basis. This must be a
huge factor in why the racing industry in Australia is such a
vibrant one. Cont. p5

Name one home comfort that you miss? My family and friends.
The distance from Jerrys Plains to Kanturk means that trips home
are a little less frequent than one might like!
Favourite sport or hobby outside of racing? I wasn’t much good
at rugby at school, but I love the game. I used to play a lot of
tennis, and play quite well, but my frustration at not being as
good as I once was has been a serious hindrance to my game in
recent years!
What would you say is your proudest accomplishment? I got
married recently, so that has to rank very highly! In a racing
sense, I’ve been lucky enough to meet some great people at
Coolmore, including The Ingham Family who have been very
good to me. Annual consideration of the mating of their mares
at Coolmore is something I very much enjoy and I got incredible
satisfaction out of Japonisme, a horse raised at Coolmore,
winning the G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington last
November. Their cerise colours are iconic in the context of
Australian racing and to have made a (small) contribution to the
breeding of their first G1 winner since the sale of their
Woodlands empire, and seeing the thrill that it gave them, is
something that I won’t ever forget.

Zghorta Dance bettered a Sept. 22 debut third at Bordeaux-le-
Bouscat by closing her juvenile campaign with a brace of wins at
Deauville Oct. 21 and Dec. 2, and returned this term to run
second in a Mar. 10 conditions heat on the artificial surface
here. Fresh from earning black-type when third in the Apr. 24
Listed Prix Finlande over this course and distance, she dictated
for most of this pattern-race bow to claim a career-high in this
trial for the June 19 G1 Prix de Diane. The chestnut assumed an
early stalking role and seized the initiative after the early
exchanges of a contest reduced in size by the scratching of
hitherto unbeaten ‘TDN Rising Star’ Maquette (Tapit). Scrubbed
along approaching the final quarter mile, she found plenty of
reserves and was ridden out in the closing stages to maintain a
comfortable buffer on the chasing pack. “Zghorta Dance comes
from a family that has always been very dear to Mr [Issam]
Fares, tracing back to [third dam] Miss Alleged, so he will be
delighted to hear he’s won another group race with a member
of the family,” commented the owner’s representative, Adrien
Rambault. “She had good form at two and had twice run well
this year, especially last time when she was third in the Prix
Finlande and the form of that race has turned out well. She is in
the [June 19 G1] Prix de Diane and [trainer] Jean-Claude Rouget
will make the decision whether to run or not.” The winner’s
second dam, the stakes-winning G3 Prix Cleopatre third Zghorta
(Gone West), is a daughter of MGISW champion and GI
Breeders’ Cup Turf heroine Miss Alleged (Alleged), herself a half-
sister to the dam of Grade I performers Captain Valid (Valid
Appeal) and Final Connection (Alleged). Zghorta Dance is kin to
the 2-year-old filly Zghorta Ride (Fr) (Rajsaman {Fr}) and a
yearling colt by Air Chief Marshal (Ire).

GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY Not so long ago just one of a number of trainers looking to
scale the ladder, Hugo Palmer now finds himself in the cherished
position of saddling Galileo Gold (GB) (Paco Boy {Ire}) in an
attempt to become the ninth colt to complete the G1 English-
Irish 2000 Guineas double in the Tattersalls-sponsored Classic at
The Curragh on Saturday. There was a definite air of authority in
his 1 1/2-length defeat of Massaat (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) at
Newmarket three weeks ago, and Al Shaqab=s chestnut has
barely looked back since, but his handler is wary of being too
confident. AYou clearly write off any of Aidan=s horses at your
peril--and he has
brought back the
likes of Roderic
O=Connor and Power
to win this race after
disappointing at
Newmarket--but if
Galileo Gold runs the
same race as he ran
in the Guineas, then
the others have to pick up their game to beat him,@ he
suggested. AEvery day since the Newmarket victory I have asked
Galileo Gold=s work rider, Toby Atkinson, how the horse is, and
have received the answer that >he feels amazing=. As I said
immediately after Newmarket, the horse didn=t lose much
weight and what he did lose he immediately put back on. He has
been on his racing weight since, and the only serious piece of
work we have done with him since the Guineas was on the
Limekilns last Friday, and Toby was very happy with him. Toby
actually said that he is more relaxed now, and that the race has
settled him down a bit. He has cooled down, rather than got
more wound up, and you have to believe that is a positive.@
Al Shaqab=s racing manager, Harry Herbert, added, AWe would
like to think that having won the Guineas on his first run of the
year, he is still progressing. This is a Guineas, though, and it is
not going to be easy. Air Force Blue (War Front) could have put
whatever stopped him running his race at Newmarket behind
him and he would be a real rival. Newmarket was too bad to be
true and we have the utmost respect for Aidan and his team.
We=ve seen horses of theirs bounce back from bad runs before--
Aidan is just a genius. But we can=t worry about anyone else, we
just have to concentrate on our horse.@ Herbert suggested the
travel wouldn=t be an issue for Galileo Gold. AI can=t see the trip
to Ireland being a problem,@ he said. AHe traveled to France last
year and ran a great race to be third [in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc
Lagardere], so I don=t think that will be anything to worry about.
The track should suit him--a stiff mile will be right up his street--
and hopefully he can win another Guineas.@
Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum=s Awtaad (Ire) (Cape
Cross {Ire}) has gone some way towards justifying trainer Kevin
Prendergast=s high
opinion of him with
his decisive verdict
over Blue de Vega
(Ger) (Lope de Vega
{Ire}) in the Listed
Tetrarch S. over
seven furlongs here
May 2, and he is a
live contender
outside of the
Newmarket Guineas
protagonists. AHe=s in
good form and ready to fire. We=re very happy with the horse,@
Prendergast commented. AWe had a horse beaten less than five
lengths in the Irish Guineas last year and this horse would be
miles better than him, so we=ll see what happens. The ground is
perfect and if everything goes well, I=m sure he=ll run very well.@
Interestingly, >TDN Rising Star= Sanus Per Aquam (Ire) (Teofilo
{Ire}), who earned such rave reviews from his breeder, owner
and trainer Jim Bolger last year, is having his first start of the
season, having last been seen finishing third to Air Force Blue in
the G1 Dewhurst S. at Newmarket in October. After beating the
subsequent G2 Beresford S. winner Port Douglas (Ire) (Galileo
{Ire}) by 4 3/4 lengths in a seven-furlong Leopardstown maiden
in July, there was a feeling that he was not quite firing when
subsequently runner-up in the G3 Tyros S. over the same course
and distance later that month, and when third in the G3 Golden
Fleece S. over a mile there in September. Successful in
Newmarket=s G3 Somerville Tattersall S. reverting to seven
12 days later, the bay was again below-par when six lengths
adrift in the Dewhurst, and it does not aid his cause that he has
had a setback earlier in the year. Click here for field.
WAITING FOR AN ANGEL As so often in 2015, trainer Michael Dods is having to look to
the skies as he prepares to unleash Mecca=s Angel (Ire) (Dark
Angel {Ire}) in Saturday=s G2 Temple S. at Haydock. Much
protected last term, the grey paid back the patience of
connections by overcoming Acapulco (Scat Daddy) in the
G1 Nunthorpe S. over this five-furlong trip at York in August.
That was the third and final start of her campaign, hindered by
unsuitably quick ground, and Dods will pull her again if the
forecast wet weather fails to materialise. Cont. p7

Waiting for an Angel cont.
“We’re just watching the forecast. Obviously, we’d need rain,”
he said. “If we get the rain and the ground goes decent, she’ll
run. If we don’t and the ground doesn’t alter then she won’t. It’s
a tough race. These races are never going to be easy. She’s
proved that if she doesn’t get the ground, she struggles.” Dods is
looking at the June 14 G1 King’s Stand S. at Royal Ascot for his
stable luminary, but again the surface will be critical, as it was
when he withdrew her from that race last June. “She
strengthened up over the winter. She’ll come on for the run, but
she’s ready to go,” he
added. “You can train her
on the light side--first time
out last year I thought
she’d need the run, yet
she broke the track
record. I didn’t take her
anywhere for a gallop last
year so I haven’t done this
time; I can get her ready
at home. We’d like to go for the King’s Stand, Nunthorpe and a
race in Ireland and we’d also like to try her over six at some
stage. But because of her need for the right conditions, we’ll
need back-ups.”
Unlike Mecca’s Angel, last year’s King’s Stand and G1 Prix de
l’Abbaye hero Goldream (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) needs it fast,
and trainer Robert Cowell is hoping it remains dry so that the 7-
year-old can rebound from a latest ninth in Meydan’s G1 Al
Quoz Sprint Mar. 26. “Things didn’t really work out for him in
Dubai. He never looked well--I don’t know why--but he’s back
with a vengeance now,” he explained of the dark bay, who is
forced to shoulder a four-pound penalty. “He worked like an
absolute beast the other day. He’s on course and we’ll just have
to hope the ground stays fast and that will be his prep for the
King’s Stand.”
Newmarket’s G3 Palace House S. was won by Profitable (Ire)
(Invincible Spirit {Ire}), and it may be that he came of age in that
Apr. 30 sprint. Trainer Clive Cox believes he can only build on
that comeback effort. “I was thrilled the way he won the Palace
House, because we did think he might just improve a little bit,”
he commented. “He’s clearly in good form and I hope they don’t
get too much rain up there. We were always boxing in that
division last year and those sprinters can find a little bit, and he
did.”
Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum’s 2015 G2 King George S. winner
Muthmir (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Waady (Ire) (Approve
{Ire}) have strong chances, with the former only beaten two
lengths when fifth in the Al Quoz Sprint and the latter third in
the Palace House, which was his first defeat over this trip.
“Muthmir obviously went to Dubai and ran a decent race. We’ve
said it before, but hopefully one day he’ll win a big one,” the
owner’s racing manager, Angus Gold, said. “We’re getting him
ready for Ascot. He prefers flatter tracks and fast ground. If the
rain comes, that won’t suit him, but William [Haggas] is adamant
we need to get a run into him before Ascot to get the freshness
out of him. Waady probably wouldn’t want it too soft, either. He
was a bit buzzy [at Newmarket] and Paul [Hanagan] said it was
hard to get cover early. He was a bit too keen on his first day
back at school, but he’s in good form and is a good horse on his
day.”

“It’s a step-up in class, but he’s entitled to go for it,” jockey
Tony Hamilton commented. “His form’s solid, so we’ll see how
we go. I didn’t really know how he’d run at Haydock, as he’s
such a laid-back horse at home. We didn’t really know where we
were with him, but he only ever does enough and he’s an
exciting horse. Everything they put in front of him, he seems to
find a way of beating them.”
Providing serious opposition is Ballylinch Stud’s filly Fort Del
Oro (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), who dropped to five furlongs to
win the Listed Woodlands S. at Naas on her seasonal bow Apr.
25, and whose career has been masterminded by Eddie Lynam
of Sole Power (GB) and Slade Power (Ire) fame. Gordon Lord
Byron (Ire) (Byron {GB}) is eight now and has to do a lot more
than when last of eight on his return in the seven-furlong G3
Gladness S. here Apr. 3, but trainer Tom Hogan believes there is
at least one more big occasion left in the multiple Group 1
winner. “We put a line through his first run and he’s carrying a
bit more condition than I’d like,” he said. “He’ll improve for the
run, I’d say, but he’s in good form and we’re happy to let him go.
I’ve walked the track and it’s in magnificent condition, but I’d
doubt it still will be come the race, as we’re forecast a fair bit.”
The Greenlands lost some intrigue when Australian champion
Vancouver (Aus) (Medaglia d’Oro) was not declared after
returning an unsatisfactory blood profile Friday. The 3-year-old
was to make his European debut for team Coolmore trainer
Aidan O’Brien.

LUCIDA RETURNS AT THE CURRAGH Off the track for 10 months, last year’s G1 1000 Guineas
runner-up Lucida (Ire) (Shamardal) returns for the Jim Bolger
stable in Saturday’s G2 Lanwades Stud S. at The Curragh. Sixth of
seven, but beaten less than two lengths, in Newmarket’s
G1 Falmouth in July, the homebred had previously finished third
in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot after her effort in the
Newmarket Classic. “Lucida is just having her first run back and
we are obviously
working towards
Royal Ascot with
her,” Godolphin’s
John Ferguson
said. “Jim wasn’t
sure a few weeks
ago if she’d have
to head straight
there, but if he
thinks this is the
right thing to do, he’s a master of his craft so we’re not going to
hold him back.” Also in the royal blue is Devonshire (Ire) (Fast
Company {Ire}), who was third in the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas over
this track and trip last May and filled that same position in the
G3 Park Express S. again over this course and distance last time
Mar. 20.
Qatar Racing’s G3 Ballyogan S. and G3 Brownstown S. winner
and G1 Matron S. third Ainippe (Ire) (Captain Rio {GB}) was third
over seven furlongs in this venue’s G3 Athasi S. May 2 and
warrants respect, while Irish Rookie (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}) has
sound claims on her second in the G1 Poule d’Essai des
Pouliches at Longchamp last May. Fourth on her comeback
behind Usherette (Ire) (Shamardal) in the nine-furlong G3 Dahlia
S. at Newmarket May 1, trainer Martyn Meade may have found
her a winnable opportunity as he seeks to provide her with a
confidence boost. “It was an experiment with the trip last time
and I think we can say she didn’t quite stay, so we’ll stick to a
mile from now on,” he said. “She came out of that run well and
I’ve got high hopes for her this weekend. There is rain forecast
and that’s good as we want as much as possible really; she does
like cut. I was a bit surprised to see Lucida declared, as I was
under the impression she was going straight to Ascot, but she
hasn’t run for a while and we have the benefit of a run under

MINDING GOES FOR GUINEAS DOUBLE Aidan O’Brien has confirmed Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) for
Sunday’s G1 Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas at The Curragh, with
the stable’s Ballydoyle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) ruled out on Friday
morning due to an unsatisfactory blood test. As a result, Derrick
Smith’s impressive G1 1000
Guineas heroine will bid to
become only the third filly to
complete the Classic double
after Attraction (GB) (Efisio
{GB}) in 2004 and Finsceal
Beo (Ire) (Mr. Greeley) three
years later. “Obviously it was
a change of heart when
Ballydoyle’s blood came in
wrong this morning,” O’Brien said. “Out of all the runners that
we had done this morning, just the two of them were wrong,
her and Vancouver [an intended runner in the G2 Greenlands S.].”
Minding’s inclusion creates a one-sided look to the race, but
Qatar Racing Limited’s acquisition Now Or Never (Ire)
(Bushranger {Ire}) is one to respect after her authoritative win in
Leopardstown’s G3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial over
this trip May 8. Trainer Michael O’Callaghan is looking forward
to the challenge, especially after Kieren Fallon’s recent claims
that she is as good as any of his 1000 Guineas winners, Russian
Rhythm aside. “Kieren loves the filly and believes a lot in her, so
it’s great he keeps the ride,” the Curragh trainer explained. “I’d
have no doubt she’ll get the straight mile at the Curragh. She’s
second favourite and we think she’s a massive chance.”
The least-exposed in the line-up is Hadi Al-Tajir’s Naas maiden
winner Cool Thunder (Ire) (Shamardal), a fascinating contender
with trainer Kevin Prendergast keen to test her despite her lack
of a prep or even a seasonal outing. “Going up in trip would be
the worry for her, but she’s in good shape,” he said. “She was
very good when she won in Naas and I’m hoping she’ll run a
good race.”

NO DERBY FOR GALILEO GOLD, MIDTERM G1 Qipco 2000 Guineas winner Galileo Gold (GB) (Paco Boy
{Ire}), who looks for a Classic double in Saturday=s G1 Tattersalls
Irish 2000 Guineas, was removed from the G1 Investec Derby at
Friday=s forfeit stage. There
had been much speculation in
recent weeks surrounding the
Al Shaqab colourbearer=s
Derby participation. Trainer
Hugo Palmer initially ruled
him out after a gene test
revealed a sprinter/miler
profile, with racing advisor
Harry Herbert later revealing
the door was still open for
the chestnut to participate in the blue riband. That door has
now been closed, with the colt withdrawn from the June 4
Classic.
>=Galileo Gold heads to the Irish 2000 Guineas at The Curragh
[Saturday] and his mid-season target is his owner=s own race,
The Qatar Sussex S., at Goodwood on July 27,@ Palmer wrote on
his Betfair blog Friday. AWith that in mind, and having been able
to discuss the situation with Sheikh Joaan about the horse
sticking to a mile, it seemed a good idea to remove the horse
from the Derby at [Friday=s] forfeit stage at midday so not to
create a false impression.@
There are 22 remaining in the Investec Derby. Eight are fromthe stable of Aidan O=Brien, including the top three bettingchoices: The Gurkha (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the winner of Sunday=sG1 Poule d=Essai des Poulains (7-2 favourite with Coral);unbeaten G3 Chester Vase winner U.S. Army Ranger (Ire)(Galileo {Ire}) (4-1); and G2 Dante S.-second Deauville (Ire)(Galileo {Ire}) (10-1). Also removed from consideration for the blue riband wasKhalid Abdullah=s Midterm (GB) (Galileo {Ire}). The Sir MichaelStoute charge was found to have a hamstring injury afterfinishing only fifth as the favourite in the G2 Dante S. May 12,but scans taken Friday revealed a stress fracture to the colt=spelvis.
WASTE DUMP WILL NOT REOPEN IN
NORMANDY By Sue Finley
After a 10-year battle, the Court of Appeals in Nantes, Francehas revoked the authorization for the global conglomerate GuyDauphin Environnement (GDE) to operate a waste dump inNonant-le-Pin. The decision, handed down Friday, effectivelyputs an end to the long standoff between GDE and theSauvegarde des Terres d=Elevage, a group of breeders andfarmers who opposed the giant auto parts dump in the middleof some of the world=s most beautiful Thoroughbred breedinggrounds. The dump operated for two days in 2013 beforeprotestors blocked the entrance with a nearly year-longblockade--in the true French tradition--and took their fight tocourt. AIt is an important victory for the racing world, for Normandyand for l=Orne, and a victory for a too-rare association betweenthe Thoroughbred and trotting worlds, who worked together fora spectacular result,@ Eric Puerari told France-Sire. Puerarioperates one of the farms which would have bordered thedump, Haras des Capucines, and is the President of theenvironmental group fighting them. Along the way, the battle was supported by many racingorganizations in France and around the world, who cametogether at Arqana each December to raise money through thedonation of stallions seasons and auction items. Loic Malivet, president of the Syndicat des Eleveurs, the French breedersassociation, was one of the ones celebrating Friday. AWe arevery happy at the Syndicat, which always supported this fight, asit is an immense victory,@ he told France-Sire. AI would say this isbetter than winning the Derby.@ Michel Zerolo, Eric Puerari=s partner in Haras des Capucines, said, AEric has been incredibly instrumental in making thishappen. He was in the trenches the whole time, fought a verygood fight and like a good American movie, the good guys wonin the end.@

After beating the smart Victory Bond (GB) (Medicean {GB})
over a mile at Newbury in October, Algometer finished second
to Midterm (GB)
(Oasis Dream {GB})
and clear of the third
in the Apr. 22
G3 Sandown Classic
Trial over 10 furlongs
and maintained his
momentum with a
solid performance
here. Settled in
second early tracking
the moderate tempo
set by Prize Money, the grey edged ahead with 2 1/2 furlongs
remaining and asserted in the final furlong as his inherent
stamina came into play. “It would need to rain at Epsom for us
to think about running in the Derby, and if it didn’t we would
leave it and take him to Ireland [for the G1 Irish Derby at The
Curragh June 25],” trainer David Simcock said. “Realistically, the
[G1] St Leger [at Doncaster Sept. 10] is the right race for him
later in the year. He’s a horse that gives everything, but today’s
race was never going to be run to suit.” Algometer looks like he
could be on track to become the best progeny out of his
highweight dam Albanova (GB) (Alzao), winner of the G1
Deutschlandpreis, G1 Rheinland-Pokal and G1 Preis von Europa.
His third dam is Kirsten Rausing’s outstanding producer
Alruccaba (Ire) (Crystal Palace {Fr}), and her trail of success is
seemingly endless. On the fillies and mares side of things,
Albanova’s full-sister Alborada (GB) remains the standard-
bearer, with two wins in the G1 Champion S. as it used to be
staged at Newmarket, while the colts to have sprung from this
dynasty include the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains and GI
Shadwell Turf Mile S. hero and sire Aussie Rules (Danehill), the
G1 Epsom Derby runner-up Dragon Dancer (GB) (Sadler’s Wells)
and the highweight G2 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial winner and
G1 Irish Derby and G1 St Leger runner-up Midas Touch (GB)
(Galileo {Ire}). The latter is just one of a number of this family to
have excelled at Ballydoyle, with the high-quality Sadler’s Wells
fillies Yesterday (Ire) and Quarter Moon (Ire) and more recently
Diamondsandrubies (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) hitting the target
at Group 1 level. Unfortunately, Albanova aborted her 2014 foal
when bred to Frankel (GB) and was barren last year to Invincible

Take Cover is one of those free-wheeling front-runners that
jockeys love to follow if they are on a gifted sprinter who can
devour him late on, but occasionally the veteran is too tough to
get to, and that proved the case on this rain-splattered terrain.
These tactics paid off when successful in the 2014 G2 King
George S. at Goodwood, a race in which he was second when
denied the lead last term, and also in Dundalk’s Listed Mercury
S. also over this trip in October. Fifth last time behind Saturday’s
G2 Temple S.-bound Profitable (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in the
G3 Palace House S. at Newmarket Apr. 30, the bay was
impressive in this competitive affair for its status and found
plenty when the other runner to race under a four-pound
penalty, Cotai Glory, threatened inside the last quarter mile.
“The ground and trip were spot-on and it’ll be the [G1] King’s
Stand [S. at Royal Ascot June 14] next,” trainer David Griffiths
said of the winner, who has a yearling half-brother by Sepoy
(Aus). “He’s run well in that before [about three-lengths eighth
in 2014 and the same distance away in sixth in 2015] and
hopefully he might strip fitter this time, and this will be a nice
confidence-boost for him.”

Polytrack last time Nov. 4, raced in rear from the outset of this
handicap bow. Rousted along to close at the rail cutaway with a
quarter-mile to go, the 10-11 pick made her bid along the fence
passing the eighth pole and quickened smartly for one flick of
the whip in the closing stages to score by a comfortable 1 1/2
lengths from Aristocratic (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}).
Persuasive’s fourth dam is the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas and G1
Champion S. victress Cairn Rouge (Ire) (Pitcairn {Ire}), and she is
kin to the 2-year-old filly Tisbutadream (Ire) (Dream Ahead) and

yearling and £60,000 GOFBRE 2yo was always doing enough to
keep him at bay and prevail by 1 1/4 lengths. The dam descends
from the MGSW and GI Kentucky Oaks runner-up Grenzen
(Grenfall), whose progeny feature the GI Meadowlands Cup-
winning sire Twilight Agenda (Devil’s Bag) and the GSP Market
Slide (Gulch). The latter achieved fame as the dam of the G1
2000 Guineas, G1 Eclipse S. and G1 Queen Anne S. hero Refuse

and also the G1 Melbourne Cup winner Media Puzzle (Theatrical

was sent off the 6-4 favourite and broke tardily before being

‘TDN Rising Star’ Roly Poly takes on the colts in this race,
which her Ballydoyle stable has won nine times since 1999. The
daughter of Misty For Me (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) managed to make a
successful debut over this trip at Naas Apr. 25 and interestingly
is pitched in against her Apr. 18 Dundalk maiden-winning
stablemate Caravaggio. That form has been boosted by the
subsequent win of the runner-up Lundy (GB) (Fastnet Rock
{Aus}), and he is likely to start favourite. “He is very fast. If he
stays six furlongs, you’d be delighted but you wouldn’t be sure
he’d get it,” Aidan O’Brien said of Caravaggio, with Royal Ascot
in mind. “He finds it very easy to go very fast.” Of Roly Poly, he
added, “It was a bit of a surprise that she won first time out. The
[G2] Queen Mary [S. at Royal Ascot June 15] is the race we’d be
looking at.”
Lundy’s Piltown base of Joseph O’Brien is responsible for two
runners, the Apr. 17 Navan maiden winner Hyzenthlay and
Ambiguity, who was six-lengths second to the Royal Ascot-
bound Psychedelic Funk (GB) (Choisir {Aus}) in Naas’s Fishery

who was an impressive winner of the opening 2-year-old race of
the current season over this course and distance Mar. 20,
represents the small stable of Darren Bunyan and he said, “The
horse is in good form and we’ve been delighted with him since
the first day. It was always the plan to wait for the Marble Hill

good race, but we’re expecting a big run.”

ROSHANARA (FR) (f, 3, Sea the Stars {Ire}--Rosawa {Fr}
{MSW-Fr}, by Linamix {Fr}) had hit the board in all three prior
starts, including a second going one mile on the Saint-Cloud turf
last time May 1, and was well away from an outside gate to slot
into fifth trapped three-wide for the most part here. Making
ominous headway on the bridle in the straight, the 17-10 chalk
swooped for control with 300 metres remaining and was pushed
out in the closing stages to score by an impressive 2 1/2 lengths
from Oasis Lady (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}). Roshanara’s dual
stakes-winning dam, Rosawa (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}), is a full-sister to
the MGSW & MG1SP freshman sire Rajsaman (Fr). The winner is

AUSTRALIAN-BRED WINNERS
COMPETITIVE LINEUP FOR JAPANESE OAKS Sunday’s G1 Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) features a full and
competitive lineup of 18 fillies, with even-money favourite
Sinhalite (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) looking to bounce back from
her first career loss when a nose second in the G1 Oka Sho
(Japanese 1000 Guineas) last out Apr. 10. Prior to that effort,
Sinhalite had won three straight–a lone juvenile start and two
stakes this year: the Kobai S. at Kyoto Jan. 17 and the G2 Tulip
Sho over a mile at Hanshin Mar. 5. This will be Sinhalite’s first
time racing beyond a mile and her first time racing left-handed,
but assistant trainer Kaname Ogino moved to dispel concerns,
saying, “I don’t think she’ll have a problem with the trip. It’s the
same for all horses. She’s a full-sister to Adam’s Peak, who won
over 2000 metres, so I’m thinking she can handle the 2400
metres.”
Another with a near-perfect record here is Cecchino (Jpn)
(King Kamehameha {Jpn}), who was second on debut at Tokyo
last November but has since won three straight, including the
G2 Sho Flora S. going 2000 metres over this course Apr. 24.
Angel Face (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) has raced
exclusively over 1800 metres in her four starts and appears to
be blossoming as of late, having won her last two outings: a
Hanshin maiden and Nakayama’s G3 Flower Cup wire-to-wire.
Assistant trainer Nobuyuki Tashiro said, “She’s had the Oaks as
her target all along. She’s not one to really do so much in
training, but she’s very well. Everything was a first for her last
time, with the long trip to Nakayama and the race there having
to negotiate four corners, but she came through it all so well.”
Rottenmeier (Jpn) (Kurofune) takes the route of last year’s
Yushun Himba winner Mikki Queen (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn})
into this race, having won the 2000-metre Wasurenagusa Sho at
Hanshin Apr. 10. The lightly raced filly gets the services of
Australian jockey Tommy Berry, and will be the first Group 1
contestant saddled by her young trainer Manabu Ikezoe. “She
has a good appetite, and there’s a good tension about her,” said
Ikezoe. “She transported well over to Tokyo for the [G3] Queen
Cup [third, Feb. 13] and her condition is improving. I think she’s
capable of running well in any sort of race.”
Jealously (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}) has won two of her last three,
both at Tokyo, including the Sweetpea S. over 1800 metres
May 1.
