Hey, there. It’s 2017, and our lives are more mobile (and chaotic) than ever before…
We have greater freedom. More sources of information. Grander opportunities.
But we know that life isn’t always about working from the deck of a yacht in the
Mediterranean, or building a million-dollar empire from the corner of a café.
There are bound to be some big moments, but there are plenty of others
in-between. And we’re here for those. The ‘phew’ moments. The ‘yeah’ moments.
The everyday moments when things just… work.
Since we began in 2010, we have worked to design solutions for more and more of
those everyday moments. We’re no longer just in your pockets, helping you pay for
your lunch, travel through the airport or carry the bare minimum to a fancy event.
Now, with tech cases, work accessories, women’s wallets and bags, we’re able to move
with you through all the worlds you inhabit. All scenarios, all modes, all moments.
We’re thrilled to share with you our latest products and stories among these
pages. Read them, flick through them, stroke them. Smell them, if you wish.
We won’t judge. And once you’re done, we’d love to hear from you.
“ We’re able to move with
you through all the worlds
you inhabit. All scenarios, all
modes, all moments.

“As long-term fans of Bellroy, we’re looking
forward to introducing the brand to a wider cycling
audience. When I ride, I want a functional wallet
that protects your phone, but can also act as your
primary wallet off the bike. The All-Conditions
Phone Pocket definitely achieves this.”
– Oliver Cousins, MAAP Co-Founder
“Bellroy’s approach fits with ours: making a product with love, sweating the
details and talking about business in an open, honest voice. We knew we had to do
something together. This is that something, and we couldn’t be prouder of it”.

Simple is back, in a massive way
Management books, marketing blogs, life podcasts
and the creators of Twitter are urging us to simplify
the message, simplify the product, simplify our entire
lives. And we try. But, what happens when none of us
wants to give up our smartphones, global travel or
touch-free payment systems – all of which require
incredible complexity to exist?
So how do we resolve this apparent tension?
Thankfully, there’s a path through the confusion
with a better understanding of the word ‘simple’.
As the late Steve Jobs explained in ‘Insanely Great’:
“When you start looking at a problem and it seems
really simple, you don’t understand the complexity
of the problem. Then you get into the problem,
and you see that it’s really complicated, and you
come up with all these convoluted solutions. That’s
sort of the middle, and that’s where most people
stop. But the really great person will keep on going
and find the key, the underlying principle of the
problem — and come up with an elegant, beautiful
solution that works.”
So there’s the kind of simple that exists on the layer
above complexity, which we like to call the ‘naive
simple’. This is the kind of simple that occurs with
flatpack assembly instructions, or changing that
tap washer — which instead just makes you feel like
Simple Simon. In other words, it’s made to look,
sound and seem simple, but that’s on the surface.
As you start trying to solve the real problems, you
build to complexity, which is where all the patches
and hacks and elaborate solutions fight for your
attention. This is the fighter-jet cockpit or the 80
The result may look simple, but
at its core, it holds a strong level
of capability and relevance that
shapes it.
page instruction manual, where you must stop your
life for a moment just to understand what’s going
on. When you leave things here, they remain really
rather complicated.
But then, with enough persistence, you push through
to the kind of simple that comes next, where it takes on
an elegance. It provides a solution to the problem in the
simplest form. It’s not surface simple. It’s deliberate,
purpose-filled simple. This is the kind of simple that
comes from applying insight and expertise to a complex
but deeply understood problem or situation. So the
result may look simple, but at its core, it holds a strong
level of capability and relevance that shapes it.
“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more
to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” –
Antoine de Saint-Exupery
Take the iPhone, for example. It’s anything but simple,
yet it has the appearance of simple. It’s sleek, clear and
easy to use. Increasingly complex layers remain hidden,
until you need them. Organization, hierarchy, patterns
and intuitive approaches all help you make sense of
only the bits that are relevant at each moment. This
is the simple that requires deep understanding and
great effort – as well as great discipline – to achieve.
So, as you navigate the different levels of simple, it’s
useful to keep a North Star in mind. So you know
what kind of simple you’re aiming for. For us, it
comes from John Maeda, who wrote an entire book
about simplicity, and then summarized it with one
law: “Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious, and
adding the meaningful.”

Former Editor of Kinfolk, Melbourne-born Georgia
Frances King now lives in New York as the Deputy
Ideas Editor at Quartz, with staff across six time
zones. Here, she shares the routine that helps keep
clarity, order and mindfulness in her everyday.
First thing
“I’m one of those annoying morning people! By
the time I’m onto mile three of my run and turning
around, I start waking up and think, ‘What the hell
am I doing?!’ It’s the best time to exercise as you
don’t realise how much pain you’re in because you
haven’t really woken up yet. That’s my theory.”
Morning
“I’ve learnt that an easy commute is very important
for my quality of life. It’s not necessarily the time
that can frustrate me, but rather the mental energy
you waste with the stress of getting to work.”
Afternoon
“I do eat lunch at my desk, but I try to take at least
15 minutes to read something; half work, half play. I
find that between 2-4pm my brain is very calm and
creative, between 5-7pm I’m often not feeling it, so
I’ll have another kick between 7-9pm.”
Evening
“I can’t seem to slow my mind down – I’m reading
all the time and talking to different people who
might spark story ideas. I love that feeling, but I
still want to learn how to turn that process off in
my brain. The one thing that has worked for me is
choral singing; when I’m doing that, I don’t think
about anything else. There isn’t just one way to
live mindfully.”
Last thing
“I’ve discovered that moments of quiet are really
important, even as an extrovert. I often bring my
phone into bed because Europe is waking up and
Tokyo and Australia are in the middle of their day,
so I do an email burst before sleep. Email is social
for me, so it feels less like work and more like
keeping up friendships.”
---
“It has taken a lot of experimentation to get to a
point where I’m happy with my routine. I work a
bit, socialize a bit, learn a bit and read a bit, and
that works for me. I’m trying to fly by the seat of
my pants more. I sometimes find that the best
part of having such a structured routine is that I
can break it. I’m learning that I don’t always have
to stick by these arbitrary rules I’ve created.”
By the time I’m onto mile three
of my run and turning around, I
start waking up and think, ‘What
the hell am I doing?!’

material and finish. These components are like the DNA or
soul of the product. And it’s the material realisation of this
that defines the beauty and success of the finished piece.
This is where the process is critical. For me, it begins
with concepts (mostly sketches and mood boards).
I group the most compelling ideas into a couple of
directions and bring them into a physical form. Here,
the real learning begins. At Bellroy, we refer to this as
the ‘experience’ – moving beyond a sketch, to a build
process that feels more refined and intricately formed
with each round.
The main hindrances to a design process are uncertainty
and vagueness. Luckily, these can be overcome through
deeper discussion or demonstration. Having some tangible
elements of the products can validate and progress projects
and save months of development time… The sooner you
can move into the ‘experience’ phase, the sooner you can
work towards resolving uncertainty.
The process need not be complex. A simple framework
allows space for great detail and resolution – and a finished
product that’s well-considered and thoughtfully developed.
I design so that I can bring ideas to life for people to enjoy.
Whether the interactions are life-changing or as mild as
a smile on someone’s face – if it is true to its purpose and
balances form with function accordingly, it’s really no more
complicated than that.
A simple framework allows space
for detail and resolution; and a
product that’s well considered
and thoughtfully developed.
A designer’s perspective
Design is like a constant dance between function and
aesthetic: beauty and desire on the surface, true-to-
purpose function within.
My father, a master craftsman, taught me from an
early age to build, design and think about objects with real
care and detail. I’d sit and watch him in his workshop, lights
on well into the night as he worked meticulously on his
ukuleles – anything from small problem-solving to entire
builds. Some projects lasted for months as he prepared the
materials, built jigs and molds, steamed and formed the
timber body, and finessed the inlays. If I was lucky enough,
he’d let me tackle some of the elements under his guidance.
Seeing the detail that came from the investment of time,
creative thought and an experienced hand, set the tone
for me as a designer.
But let’s not confuse detail with complexity. Because some
of the most beautiful objects are daringly simple.
At Bellroy, design is a highly collaborative process and often
follows a common format. But the starting point varies
greatly. It might be a broad need, moment or situation; or
something more specific such as a gesture, function or detail
that the product or range will be built around.
“Stop looking at yourself as a designer and start thinking of
yourself as a deliverer of ideas.” – Stale Malvær
In delivering an idea, I always break down the vision I have
of an item’s finished state into its parts – function, detail,

One of the most difficult parts of the process for me, was
actually committing to the journey, and not just letting it
remain a dream inside my head during slow moments at
the office... I think, when we’re looking at embarking on
something big, our minds swirl with all the possibilities
and it can be overwhelming and confusing. I found it really
useful to pour all of those thoughts, doubts, excitements
and opportunities onto a big piece of paper. And then
after having analysed it in a logical way, I burnt the piece
of paper and went with my gut.

Honoring the design of Dieter Rams
Modern life is Minimal.
Originally released in 1958, Dieter Rams’ T3
transistor radio looks like a lost Apple prototype.
With its curved edges, stark minimalism and intuitive
scroll wheel, it’s a physical manifestation of his ‘less
but better’ approach to design. More than half a
century later, it’s considered a modern classic. The
first of many.
Working with Braun from 1955 until retirement in
1988, Rams brought simplicity and style to everyday
objects. In the process, he created iconic designs
that have both stood the test of time and shaped the
world as we know it.
If they happen to look familiar, it’s because almost
every industrial designer since has been influenced by
his work. Apple’s Jonathan Ive is a case in point. The
designer responsible for the iPhone, iPod, and iPad
has described Rams’ work as, “Bold, pure, perfectly
proportioned, coherent and effortless. At a glance,
you knew exactly what it was and exactly how to
use it.”
But what have we mortals learned from Dieter Rams?
Good design transcends aesthetic purpose.
A trained architect and carpenter, Rams was
influenced by the Bauhaus movement, which brought
art and industry together and suggested good design
was about achieving both beauty, and utility. In doing
so, it could transcend its origins and influence society
on a broader scale.
“The simpler the design, the
longer it’s able to serve its
owner as intended.”
He introduced these sensibilities to consumer
products, explaining that, “Indifference towards
people and the reality in which they live is actually
the one and only cardinal sin in design.”
You can see that philosophy in practice via his 606
Universal Shelving System. Released in 1960 under
his Vitsœ imprint, the modular shelving unit is a
master class in form and function. By stripping away
the superfluous and re-engineering the humble shelf
from the ground up, he was able to create a timeless
piece that’s as enduring and popular today as it was
when it launched.
We approached our very first wallet with a similar
intention. After seeing bulky wallets affect how
people sat on chairs or cause struggles with slim
pockets, we set out to re-engineer the way a wallet
was built (with fewer layers of leather and a new type
of card storage). In all our products, the complex
layers of design – built from deep consideration
around the habits of our customers – are hidden
from view, until they’re needed.
Function should inform the form, and the form
make sense of the function.
This adherence to functionalism is the common
thread that links Rams’ many projects.
As he explained, “I wanted to make products whose
appearance did not immediately command attention,
but instead became more appealing through use and
an enduring aesthetic.”
B Y M I K O L A I N A P I E R A L S K I
Over time, this became known as the Braun
Design Process, and was centered on the relationship
between interior and exterior components. The end
goal was to show as little design as possible, blending
these opposing forces to create a singular product.
This was a revolutionary concept in the 1950s, and
it’s still contentious today. While other designers
and architects were busy stamping their identity
on buildings and products, Rams was trying
to remove ego entirely from the process.
He designed not for himself, but to serve others.
That consumer-first sentiment is as apparent in his
early radios and turntables as it is in the 1987 pocket
calculator he designed.
It’s a humility we admire enormously at Bellroy.
Similarly, we don’t consider our job done when a
product is done and packaged. We’ve done our job
when our products succeed in creating moments
of delight for our customers on a daily basis, for
years on end.
Design endures longest when it foregoes
a grand statement.
To really understand Rams’ genius it’s necessary
to look at the world that birthed his ideas. Rams’
design aesthetic was very much a rejection of the
consumerism and wastefulness that characterised
the dawn of the nuclear age.
His pursuit of long-lasting design was a natural
extension of his less but more philosophy. “I always
strove for things to be sustainable. By that I mean
the development of long-lasting products, products
that don’t age prematurely, which won’t become out
of style. Products that will remain neutral, that you
can live with longer.”
We think about this in terms of refining a design into
the simplest form it can be before it loses its purpose.
The more ‘expressive’ a design is, the narrower its
natural environment is likely to be, and the sooner
you’d tire of it. The simpler the design, the longer
it’s able to serve its owner as intended. And, as our
first goal is to ‘make products that will be loved for
as long as possible’, ensuring the timelessness of
our products’ appeal is crucial to us in more ways
than one.
Of course Rams was there first, and he encapsulated
these lessons in a series of 10 design commandments
first published in 1970. Staying true to form, he
later condensed it into a single, unified line: “To
design is to think.”
An abridged version of Rams’ 10 principles:
1. Good design is innovative.
Technology and design move in tandem, the former
providing new opportunities for the latter.
2. Good design makes a product useful.
A product is bought to be used. Good design
emphasises this usefulness, whilst disregarding
anything that detracts from it.
3. Good design is aesthetic.
A product’s aesthetics have an effect on the people
that use it. It’s an integral part of its usefulness.
4. Good design makes a product understandable.
Its function should be self-explanatory.
5. Good design is unobtrusive.
Products that fulfill a purpose are like tools. They are
neither decorative objects nor works of art.
6. Good design is honest.
It does not make a product more innovative, powerful
or valuable than it really is.
7. Good design is long lasting.
It avoids being fashionable and therefore never
appears antiquated.
8. Good design is thorough down to the last detail.
Care and accuracy in the design process show respect
towards the consumer.
9. Good design is environmentally friendly.
It conserves resources and minimizes physical and
visual pollution throughout a product’s lifecycle.
10. Good design is as little design as possible.
Less, but better – because focus has been paid to
only the essential aspects.
For a deeper dive, we recommend ‘Dieter Rams: As
Little Design as Possible’ by Sophie Lovell.

“I get to play with all our products, testing them out for feel and function.
But when the test ends, I keep returning to my Slim Sleeve. Every tuck, fold and
stitch has been thought about, in a way that celebrates leather like a Bellroy should.
I love this thing.”

“I am always trying out product prototypes at a very early stage in the design
process. I put them through their paces to understand what works, and what we
can improve on. I’ve been using this beautiful Arctic blue Phone Case 1-Card since
its first production sample. It’s been through drop tests, flash tests, bounding tests,
fitting tests and of course, the pocket test. We absolutely torture these things so
that they are fit and ready for production. This one actually got a hole drilled in
where the camera hole is. I had to test that the case wasn’t cutting off photos when
using the camera. Turns out it wasn’t…”
Arya, Bellroy’s Production (and Demolition) Manager.
“If you’re walking away from the customs desk in Italy and the lady calls out,
‘Excuse me ma’am, I need to check one more thing,” it could be quite stress
inducing. Luckily, the customs officer just wanted to check out my Passport Sleeve
and ask where I got it! It’s been my trusted travel mate for two years now. The tan
color is actually helpful too, it’d be difficult to lose in an airport lounge.”
Sharni, Bellroy’s Chief Happiness Provider.

“My Very Small (Card Pocket version 1) was given to me years ago, in times ‘BC’
(before children). It now houses library cards, shop cards, gift vouchers, business
cards and has often doubled as a toy/distraction to occupy toddlers. Day to day it
lives in the black hole that is my handbag as my second wallet. Whenever we travel
though, it’s a great carryall for cash and a credit card or two.”
Miyo, Bellroy’s Chief Distractor.
“I lived in Japan for four amazing years, learning about the culture and habits.
Including the meishi (business card) ritual which is slow, considered and respectful.
I bow slightly, carefully hand my card over and introduce myself. Then take time to
read, pause and reflect on their card. My Card Holder is super useful on business
trips back to Japan, because of the two compartments for your cards, and the
cards you receive. I use the Card Holder as a wallet most of the time, with a sneaky
micro pen clipped over the spine, but when I go to Japan I swap it out for business
cards. (And I give the pen a break – it’s a big no-no to write on someone’s meishi).
If you’re exchanging meishi and feel like giving your Japanese a whirl, you can say
“Hajimemashite” (Ha-jim-meh-mash-teh). It roughly means, ‘nice to meet you’.”
Rich, Bellroy’s Meishi Master.

Our storyBefore Bellroy, a team of friends set up a blog called
Carryology as a place for fellow carry enthusiasts
to connect and share ideas. It started providing
insights around what people carry, and wallets in
particular – as slim tailoring became popular, bulky
wallets couldn’t hide anymore.
So a team of product designers – sat around a
kitchen table in Bells Beach, Australia – set about
crafting a slim wallet with fewer layers of leather
and smarter card positioning. The release of this
product in 2010 signaled the birth of the Bellroy
brand, and our crusade to ‘slim your wallet’. We’ve
come a fair way since then...
“As the world swapped their baggy trousers for slimmer
fits, we struggled to ignore those ugly wallet lumps. So,
as engineers and designers we tackled the way a wallet
should be built, while a team of close friends helped
shape the way we wanted to communicate that to
the world. And that was with Bellroy.” – Co-founder
Andy Fallshaw
We recognized pretty early on that we can use
business as a force for good. And as a certified B
Corp, we constantly pursue better ways to source
our leathers, reduce our impact on the environment
and make sure our products are used and loved for
as long as possible.
We are (and always have been) about making a
difference to the in-between: helping you get where
you’re going quicker, organizing your workspace so
you can see beyond the screens and admire the view
out the window, letting you pay for your morning
coffee without dropping the stack of stuff in your
arms (or spilling the espresso down the front of your
shirt). Getting you moving through all your worlds
with lighter shoulders.
With our increasingly mobile lives, comes more
and more ways to help our customers. Our range
has moved beyond pockets and includes solutions
for your tech, work accessories and more – right
down to the humble set of keys. Because as long as
there are things to carry through our lives, we want
to find better ways to carry them.
69 70
Our approach to responsible business
We’re proud to be part of the B Corp movement
– a group of certified companies using the power
of business to help solve social and environmental
problems.
How does a carry goods company do that?
By refining the way we create our products.
We apply Lean Manufacturing principles to our
products – it’s an approach that attempts to
understand the whole process, to reach more
sustainable solutions.
By limiting our impact on the environment.
Our environmental goals have been inspired by Cradle-
to-Cradle principles. At the moment, these seem to be
the smartest and most realistic principles to follow,
and have led us to five goals that guide our decisions:
1. Make products that last as long as possible.
2. Eliminate toxins in our products and packaging.
3. Seek biodegradable or recyclable materials where they
make the most sense (without compromising the first two
environmental goals).
4. Reduce waste and energy consumption through
the whole process.
5. Pursue a deeper understanding of our impact and ways
to reduce it.
By considering animal welfare.
We partner with external organizations such as
FarmForward and the LWG Animal Welfare Working
Group to move towards better treatment for animals at
every stage of their lives.
By giving to effective causes.
Our giving program matches donations our team contributes
to charities like The Centre for Effective Altruism, or those
recommended by GiveWell. On top of that, we share 1%
of our sales revenue (that’s revenue, not profit) between
effective human and animal welfare causes.

Design approach
We began with a focus on redesigning the common
wallet. If you hold most wallets sideways, you’ll see a
layer of leather between every card they store. So, for
every additional card you carry, you’re also carrying a
layer of leather. Our major design insight from the very
beginning was to separate just a couple of cards that you
use every day, then store the rest more efficiently in a
separate compartment – without all the extra leather
bulking out your wallet, and pockets.
Moments of quiet delight
We now apply our design principles to a broader range
of carry goods. Each has been considered. Deeply.
We consider the habits, technology and currency of a
region; the environmental footprint of the materials and
construction; the functionality over years to come. All
with the aim of inspiring a little quiet delight between
our customers and the things they carry through life.
The balance between form and function
We believe the function should inspire the form, and the
form should help people understand the function – so
they influence each other equally. We prototype in paper,
card, leather and foam. We hack and experiment. We
try different combinations until we find the best way to
get all the elements working together. If something’s not
quite right, we’ll go again. However many times it takes.
Truth to materials
We work hard to create products that will live a long
life and always choose materials that are proven to
serve their purpose. Leather where you need character
and softness; wovens where you need durability and
lightweight performance; polymer where you need
flexibility and protection.
