Hebrews 12:3-4

“Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you

may not grow weary or fainthearted. In your

struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the

point of shedding your blood.”

Hebrews 12:3-4

“Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you

may not grow weary or fainthearted. In your

struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the

point of shedding your blood.”

Hebrews 12:5-6

“…have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons?

‘My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him.For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.’”

Hebrews 12:5-6

“…have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons?

‘My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him.For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.’”

DISCIPLINE

Greek: paideia

The responsibility taken by the father of a small child, to teach, train, correct, guide, help, and equip the child toward living rightly.

The Means of God’s Discipline

The Word of God

II Timothy 3:16, 17 All Scripture is breathed out by God, and profitable for teaching for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Hebrews 12:7-8

It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.

Responding to God’s Discipline

“…have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons?

‘My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him.For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.’”

Responding to God’s Discipline

Submit to God’s discipline, to be trained by it, and in the end be blessed by your

loving Father! (see vs. 7-11)

Hebrews 12:10

“…but he disciplines us for our good…”

Hebrews 12:10

“…but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share His holiness.”

Hebrews 12:11

“For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”

Three Applications

1. In Trials and Suffering:Know that God is your Father and He has received you; He is at work in you.

2. Fathers: You MUST discipline your children.

3. God’s Word: Eagerly submit yourself to it.
