CELEBRATING OUR PARTNERSHIPS
In a world where people often don’t agree with you, it is
always tempting—and always wrong—to retreat to isolation.
“Making shabbos by yourself” is the Yiddish way of expressing
the separatist impulse. The language of European history
referred to this, by way of describing the policies of Great
Britain, as “Splendid Isolation.” The attitude that you are at the
center of the universe, and that nothing else counts as much, is
summed up in the old London newspaper headline, “Fog in
Channel: Continent Cut Off.”
But our Classical Rabbis have taught us to reject this attitude. Hillel, the George
Washington of Rabbinic Judaism, made famous the proverb, “al tifrosh min
ha-tsibbur-- do not separate yourself from the community”.
Temple Israel has enjoyed a number of mutually beneficial partnerships with
neighboring houses of worship. In recent years, we have sheltered the homeless,
participating in the NEST program, with First Lutheran and Second Presbyterian
churches. We have done quite a few other joint ventures, as well, with the good
people of “Second, including blood drives, pulpit exchanges, visits to each other’s
worship services, celebrations of Thanksgiving, and so on. This partnership
continues.
We have had a number of years of pulpit exchanges with Ohef Shalom Temple,
first in the 1990’s, and again during the tenure of Rabbi Roz. We will be attending
the Friday night live service at Ohef Shalom this coming August 10. I went to the
previous one, on June 29—it was fun and energizing. Prepare to sing and to enjoy!
We have ongoing collaborative work with Congregation Beth El, a leading
congregation in our own denomination. For two years, we have co-sponsored a
religious school, the Beit Sefer Shalom, and its post-bar mitzvah division, the
Midrashah, and we are excited to have jointly hired a new educational director for
this school, Eran Livni. We also maintain a joint weekday evening minyan, helping
all of our congregants to have a quorum for the nights when they come to worship.
Now, we have embarked on a series of jointly-sponsored social programs. Just this
past month, we enjoyed a barbecue at the home of Rabbi Jeffrey and Tami Arnowitz,
and on August 19, we will be headed out to Seashore State Park with our Beth El
neighbors for an afternoon of “schmoozing” and socializing. Beth El will also join us
at Temple Israel for a joint celebration of Purim on Wednesday evening, March 20,
2019. Stay tuned for information regarding additional social programs in this series.
All four of our local Conservative Congregations come together to recite Selichot
prayers at the start of the High Holiday season. This year, we will gather at Temple
Emanuel on Saturday night, Sept. 1, starting with a story-telling and social
program at 8:30 PM and then continuing with the soulful worship.
Our most extensive partnership, extending continuously for the past 18 years, has
been, and continues to be with, “KBH”, the Kempsville Conservative
Congregation. We have created a full schedule of joint events with “KBH” (see
Page 4).
Friends: Please see and save the following information and to make an effort to
attend as much of our joint programming as you can, because I know that you will
find your Jewish life enhanced by the experience of sharing it with neighbors in faith.

A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

Temple Israel Bulletin • Page 3
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
June had a seminal event for me as president of Temple Israel for I attended
leadership training in MD. The training I received along with 27 others in the class
is called Sulam for Presidents and is run under the auspices of United Synagogue of
Conservative Judaism (USCJ) at the Pearlstone retreat in Reisterstown, MD. I
drove up on the 7th with the president of Beth El, Linda Samuels, and drove back on
the 10th. Long drives, intense but informative and oft times fun training sessions
led to lessons learned with materials to keep and review. The next few months we'll
see how what I've learned gets put into practice!
In June, we had scheduled walks in Norfolk Botanical Gardens. I did two walks with the Rabbi and others
during the Lantern Asia exhibit, one during the day and the other at night. We all enjoyed being outdoors
in the fresh air and sunshine during the day and the cooler night where the exhibits proved to be truly
awesome in their bright vibrant colors! From those walks, I took a multitude of photos.
This past year we've made many improvements in the minyan room. The latest one tops off the new carpet
and security system with a much brighter LED lighting system with dimmer. This installation took care of
the complaints about it not being well enough lit. Harry Snyder, may he rest in peace, I feel sure would be
happy about all these improvements. Finally, Harry's picture is now closer to the ark as we moved it there
when it became necessary for the security monitor to take up space where his picture hung. I can't help but
think he'd like being so near the Torah!
We have two Summer programs in partnership with Beth El. The first one was a cookout and Tides game
on July 29th. On August 19th is Schmooze at the Shore. See page 5 for details. We are also scheduling
some joint programming with KBH for the coming year. I promote these programs in order to see larger
social gatherings of conservative minded Jews in Tidewater.
See you in Shul,
Jonathan Longman

Wendy and Ron Brodsky are excited to announce the
engagement of their son, Saul Leo Brodsky, to Adina
Tzipporah Jakubowicz. Adina is the daughter of Sol and Fran
Jakubowicz of Bait Shemesh, Israel. Saul is the brother of
Marlene Brodsky Schulman and the grandson of Lois and
Barry Einhorn and Florence Brodsky. An October 3
wedding is planned in Israel.
Rachel Baltuch Dombroski, daughter of Leigh and Linda Baltuch,
recently graduated from Chestnut Hill College, Philadelphia, PA, with a
Master of Education Degree. She currently is a Nature Preschool teacher
at The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education in
Philadelphia. Yay Rachel!!
ATID… means “future” in Hebrew.
As Women’s League for Conservative Judaism enters its second century, Torah
Fund begins its 77
th
year and the State of Israel enters its 71
st
year, we look forward
with joy to our future together with the supporters of Torah Fund.
When the classical rabbinic texts speak of the future using the word atid, it usually
appears in the phrase “le’atid lavo”, which means, “in the future to come.” By this,
they mean either the day when the Messiah will come or “olam habah” the afterlife. Contemporary
Israelis are known to say, with optimism, “yesh atid” which translates to “there is a future.”
How do you envision your future? Your personal future: the future of your family; the future of your
community; of the United States, Canada and Israel? When you dream of a bright future, is it in the
next world or this one? The seminaries of the Conservative ? Masorti Movement, which we support
through Torah Fund, are doing the great work that helps us navigate our future together, as one people.
And our sisterhoods provide the social and educational networks – the extended family – that helps us to
forward into our future as Jewish women with confidence.
The 5779 Torah Fund pins have been ordered and should be arriving shortly – please contact Wendy
Brodsky ([email protected] or 757-639-3541) if you would like to be a Benefactor or
require more info.
