CONSERVATION OF GARDENS AND PARKS OF HISTORIC

INTEREST IN THE UNITED KINGDOM: A NOTE

by Peter Goodchild*

The Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies (University of York) has just commenced a two year research project, funded by the Ernest Cook Trust, on the conservation of gardens and parks of historic interest.

Comprehensive Survey of Gardens and Parks of Historic Interest

The first part of the project is an investigation of suitable methods by which a comprehensive Survey of Gardens and Parks of Historic Interest in the U.K. might be carried out. Although gardens and parks are often acknowledged as being an important part of the British national heritage, up to now there has been no thorough survey and there is no central record of them.

There are indications that a large amount of rewarding work is there to be done. Within recent years it has been realized that important sites exist which are not generally known, and that even comparatively well known places have secrets to reveal. There are also sites - including many smaller ones - which may not at first appear to be of any particular significance, but when seen in an historical context can be of considerable interest.

The object of a comprehensive Survey would be to identify and describe gardens and parks of historic interest of all kinds, and to build up an Inventory of them together with accompanying details and illustrations. It is intended that the Inventory should eventually become an important source of information for all who are engaged in the study and conservation of historic gardens and parks.

There are several ways in which information might be collected for such a Survey. These include contributions from individuals, students and groups that have an interest of any kind in the subject.

A Trial Survey

An initial range of methods has been devised at the Institute which will subject them to practical and experimental trials in selected areas. This will allow their effectiveness to be tested before promoting their use more widely. The methods, which are briefly described below, allow people with different amounts of time available to make useful contributions. Short or detailed descriptions of individual sites, or of a group of sites, can be accommodated.

* Mr Goodchild is the Research Fellow appointed for the project at the Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies, The University of York, The King's Manor, York YO1 2EP, England.

Si te

The word 'Site' is used as a convenient abbreviation for the phrase "a garden, park, designed landscape, designed grounds or place of recreation of historic interest".

An initial range of methods to be employed in the Trial Survey

Contributions may be made to the Trial Survey in the following ways:

1) by completing standard forms for individual sites, 2) by making a general survey of a specific area such as an

administrative District, Parish or group of Parishes, 3) by making a special study of some aspect of historic gardens

and parks within a specified area. Suitable topics would include: (i) the work of a particular designer,

(ii) a particular type of site, (iii) a particular period of history, (iv) an investigation of a particular collection

or source of information.

The standard forms to be used are: Form 1 Site Recommendation Form. Form 2 Site Record Form. Form 3 Notice of Sources of Information.

The Site Recommendation Form is designed so that sites can be recommended to the survey for more detailed investigation. When a site is recommended it is also registered with the survey. Only a brief account of why the site is thought to be of historic interest and of its general condition need be given with the form.

The Site Record Form enables more detailed information to be given about particular sites in a systematic way. A certain amount of work in libraries, etc. and a site visit are required. However, it is recommended that this should be confined to collecting readily available information, unless the investigator has a special wish and the time to explore in greater depth.

The Notice of Sources of Information provides a simple and convenient means by which brief notes can be passed on to the survey about sources of information on sites other than those for which a Site Record Form is being prepared by the contributor.

Contributors may choose which of the methods they wish to adopt; but before undertaking a Site Record Form, a general survey, or a special study, they should consult the organiser of the trial to check, amongst other things, that they are not duplicating work that is already being carried out.

Handbook and guidance notes

A handbook and guidance notes for the Trial Survey are available.

Coordination

The author is coordinating the Trial Survey at a national level as part of the Institute's research project. Where possible Area Coordinators or Group Representatives will be appointed to coordinate the work at a more local level, or from a particular group or organisation. The trials will be in progress during the next year or so.
