CONSERVATION
FOUNDATION NEWSThe Board of the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation voted last week to
award a grant of $600.00 to Paul Zajicek of Sanibel for his continued research of theLoggerhead sea turtle at Cape Romano, Fla. Paul is working with Caretta Researchbased on Sanibel.
Zajicek, an 18 year old senior at Cypress Lake High School, completed a fiveweek study of the loggerheads at the Cape Romano site five miles south of MarcoIsland. The success of the scientific investigations there encouraged an extention ofhis study through 1975.
The grant Zajicek receives will enable him to spend eight weeks this summer atthe beach making observations and scientific investigations of the nesting loggerheadsand tagging some of the animals to obtain migration data. The results of this surveyand investigation work will be published in the year end report of Caretta Research.
The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation Board of Directors determinedthat scientific investigations like this are extremely important if enough informationabout the loggerhead and other threatened animal specie is to be learned to preservetheir kind; which is, whether or not we are yet sophisticated enough to realize it,essential to the continued survival of human life.
AUDUBON ELECTIONSAt the annual meeting of the Sanibel-Captiva Audubon Society, held on April
19, over 200 members and friends of the local chapter elected unanimously thefollowing officers for 1973: Marion F. Hutton, president; Griffing Bancroft, vicepresident; Shirely J. Walter, secretary-treasurer. Elected to the Board for three yearterms were Roy Bazire, Richard Beebe, Hal Harrison and Dewitt Jones. In addition, the Board for 1973 includes the following directors, elected in previous years: KarenEastman, Dorothy Mendinhall, Parker Mills and Charles Newell.
In submitting his annual report, Mario Hutton stated that 1972 was a year ofachievement and continued progress for the local Audubon. Among accomplishmentsworth mentioning, he listed several interventions on the national, state and locallevels on matters regarding conservation problems, and in particular the defense ofour unique natural treasures.
A donation to the Sanibel Public Library Building Fund was presented to itspresident, Robert Haynie. A resolution was carried unanimously, endorsing andsupporting the proposal of the local Planning Board that Sanibel, Captiva andadjacent keys be designated by the state as an "area of critical concern."

TRAVEL TIPS FORYOUR VACATION THIS SUMMER
Mostly Islanders sail or motor(alas there are no more trains. Thosetrains leaving Fort Myers station withthe grandest station master, and thewhistle blowing, and the conductorshouting "board" were really the Cat'sMeow, says Ruth) to a special cool placefor their summer vacation spots.
The Hunters would like tothoroughly recommend the caverns inour own state of Florida at Mariana,Ausable Chasm, which you go throughby boat, and Watkins Glen, where youwalk under a waterfall in New YorkState.
Then there is a delightful boat rideon the Charles River which flows intoBoston Harbor where you can board themightly constitution "Old Ironsides."But best of all Ruth and Philip enjoyedLinkletter Beach at Prince EdwardIsland in Canada where they collectedsome interesting shells shown below.

EDISON PLAYERS THEATER
Don't let the name fool you!"Star-Spangled Girl" is not a musical, but Neil Simon's script is as lyricallyhumorous as Beethoven is classical. LeeLaack, director for the final regularseason fare, has mingled experience withenthusiasm to yield a high note, so tospeak, for the season's finale.
The cast is a trio of vitality andconviviality: Andy, Charles Ghigna;Norman, Carl Northgard; Sophie,Gretchen Wahlberg.
Charles Ghigna is no stranger toEdison Players or to theater goers inSouthwest Florida. His latest role withthe Players was as Tom in "GlassMenagerie."
Carl Northgard, though new to thePlayers, has amassed considerabletheater experience through theUniversity of South Florida, Tampa, and other semi-professional theatergroups.
Gretchen Wahlberg will debut withthe players as the "Girl-next-door" inthe play. Her artistic talents are varied, however, and has had previousexperience in theater through her highschool productions.
The story involves two young menwho are writing a protest magazine untila flag-waving gal next door presentsstrange "aromas" yielding complicationsin love that are resolved as theperformance ends, stirringly.
Note: Box office will open May 1,from 4 to 6 p.m. daily and on play days.Curtain at the Theater on Main St. willbe 8:30 p.m., May 11 and 12 and againMay 18 and 19.
Help is needed before the play inmany ways. Please phone Lee Laack ora member of the cast for available times. We'd like to borrow 30 minutes of yourtime to make this play and the theatergrand!
ISLAND GARDENER
Rye grass will begin to fade becauseof the warm weather and the funguscalled rust says Florida Nurserymen andGrowers Association (FNGA). Now is agood time to overseed your permanentBahia lawn. The seeds should be sown atthe rate of 5 pounds per 1,000 squarefeet and covered at least \lA inches withsoil. In 3 or 4 weeks the seed shouldgerminate to produce a dense, thickgrowth.
Many gardenia plants are in bloom. The type of flower and the time offlowering is important to your homegrounds. Check with your nurserymanfor new varieties. Trim dead flowers offthe branches. Fungus sometimes attacksthese dead flowers and may get on thefresh blooming flowers. A spray ofmalathion and Fore will help to preventwhitefly and disease.
Plan an area of your home groundsfor fragrance. Use gardenias,night-blooming jasmine, Confederatejasmine and a few of the fragrant roses.Your local nurseryman will have othersuggestions ;uiri can aid you in selectingplants that will compliment each other.Planting new shrubs around the home iseasy with container grown material.
Most azaleas have finishedblooming. Now is the time to prune andshape the old plants. The new growthwill mature and set flowers for nextyear. An application of fertilizer willhelp to produce new growth andprovide vigor to the plant. Anazalea-camellia fertilizer would be verysuitable. Extra mulch may be needed atthis time around azaleas. You may usecypress bark, pine nuggets, or othermaterials. Mulches prevent weedgrowth, keep the roots cool and help tomaintain soil moisture during thesummer months.
Fast growing shrubs such ashibiscus, crotons and copper leaf maybe pruned now. The clippings frompruning will easily provide cuttings ifyou want to grow new plants. After anypruning it is advisable says FNGA toapply fertilizer. It will help the plant torecover its original growth. Pruningshould be performed judiciously. Neverremove more than is necessary. Paintlarge wounds with a heavy pruning paintto prevent fungus invasion.

DING'S TriUMliS
If you were a mosquito fish, it would probably make little difference to youwhether you were on the menu of a common egret or that of a Florida great whiteheron. Such considerations become incidental once the fact has been established thatyou are on the menu. But to the binocular-invested ornithologist the differencebetween sighting a common egret and viewing the great white heron is one of greatmagnitude. This is not to say that either bird is more important than the other;merely that sharing time and space with the heron has become an experience at apremium. For the Florida great white heron is rare, meaning that should itsenvironment change it will be threatened with extinction.
The reason birders get increased adrenalin in their systems when they spot alarge common egret wading up to his middle — the reason they will spend hourswaiting for that bird to wade into shallower waters or to take flight — is that theyellow bill and white plumage of the egret are indistinguishable from those of theheron. The identifying characteristic is the legs — the egrett's legs are black, theheron's are yellow.
The Florida great white heron is found exclusively in Florida, with theexception of its rare visits to adjacent states. In Florida its breeding range is limitedto the southernmost portions; Florida Bay, the Keys, southern Biscayne Bay andCape Romano. From these breeding grounds the birds often disperse inland towardthe Tamiami Trail, along the coasts to Tampa Bay and Cape Canaveral, and out tothe Dry Tortugas. Sanibel is blessed with a handful of these creatures; sightings aremost common at Blind Pass bridge, near the golf course off Tulipa Way, and at the

end of Wulfert Road where they feed on aquatic animal life in the shallow waters. This rare bird is often seen throughout its limited breeding range, even though
its numbers are quite small. In recent aerial surveys, two thousand adults wereunted over South Florida. Like many of the wading birds the great white heron
^nerally raises two or three young every year.Man and the elements have acted to eliminate the great white heron. In days
gone by the bird, along with the common and snowy egrets, was hunted for itsaigrettes or plumes. Due to action taken by the Audubon Society the latter two havebeen snatched back from the brink of extinction. Not so with the heron; in additionto man's exploitation, hurricanes have decimated populations. In 1935, a Septemberhurricane reduced the herons to 150 individuals; Hurricane Donna caused the deathsof 40% of the adults in 1960; and in 1965, 22 of the birds were killed *>y HurricaneBetsy. The habitat damage done by hurricanes seems to have little adverse effect onthe birds, the actual hurricane force is the mortality factor.
As of this writing most of the range of the great white heron lies on federal landin the Everglades National Park and three refuges, Great White Heron, Key Deer, andKey West National Wildlife Refuges. The birds are further protected by Florida StateLaw. Studies are underway to clarify the heron's kinship to the great blue heron withwhich they commonly interbreed; another cause of the reduction in white heronnumbers. Other measures have been proposed to insure the white heron's continuedexistence: maintenance of habitat, especially of nesting areas; the regulation ofmosquito poison usage in heron feeding grounds; and a continuance of strict lawenforcement to eliminate shooting of these creatures.

THIS WEEK AT THE SANIBEL LIBRARYby Hal H. Harrison
Last week's column was devoted entirely to "thumbnail" reviews of some of themany novels that have arrived at the Sanibel Library. For those who prefernon-fiction, the library has the following new books for your enjoyment:
"The Godfather Papers and Other Confessions" by Mario Puzo. A personalaccount by the author of "The Godfather" of some of the behind-the-scene events inthe making of the film. It also discloses the man behind the book.
"The Wilderness Revolt" by Diane Kennedy Pike and R. Scott Kennedy. A newview of the life and death of Jesus based on ideas and notes of the late Bishop JamesA. Pike who died in the Judean wilderness.
"Places Where I've Done Time" by William Saroyan. The famous novelisist anddramatist writes about 68 places he has known and where he has met famous andinfamous people. An original autobiographical work.
"Ahead of Time" edited by Harry Harrison and Theodore J. Gordon. Selectedessays about discoveries or speculations which have received major attention fromthe press and the scientific community.
"Occult America," by John Goodwin. A definitive investigation into the motivesand personalities behind America's quest for mysticism.
"Passions and Politics, A Biography of Versailles" by Joseph Barry. A big bookthat tells the story of Versailles, the remarkable French chateau, and the people wholived there.
"The Middle Man, Adventures of a Literary Agent" by Paul R. Reynolds. Afunny and revealing account of America's literary and motion picture greats, neargreats and ingrates.
"The Papers and the Papers" by Sanford J. Ungar. An account of the legal andpolitical battle over the Pentagon Papers.
"Two on a Big Ocean" by Hal Roth. The personal account of a man and awoman who circumnavigated the Pacific in 19 months in their 35-foot sailboat. TheRoths called at 75 ports. Illustrated with photographs.
"The Name Above the Title" by Frank Capra. This is the autobiography of oneof the greatest directors and producers of motion pictures.
"Of Wise Men and Fools" by David Edman. On the premise that Sunday Schoolsteach Bible stories all wrong,Edman retells them in a more realistic manner, morerelevant to today's world.
"Hedda and Louella" by George Ellis. A dual biography of Hollywood's famousmovie columnists by the author of "The l i fe That Late he Led," a biography of ColePorter.
"Night Country" by Loren Eisley. i found this book difficult reading requiringclose concentration during Eisley's discourses on the philosophy of inner darkness —the mind. He is at his best in telling of adventures in dark places where he has workedas an anthropologist.

Upped CheckMartin bought a secondhand
motorcycle from a friendlystranger, giving him a check for"eight hundred dollars." But whenhe got the check back from thebank at the end of the month, ithad been upped to "thirty eighthundred dollars."
Martin decided that the bankhad no right to take the extra$3,000 out of his account.
"It's not my fault the fellowwas crooked," he argued in acourt hearing. "Let the bank tryto collect the difference fromhim."
But the bank pointed out thatMartin had made three carelessmistakes in writing the check:
1) he had failed to fill in thepayee's name;
2) he had failed to fill in thenumbers after the dollar sign; and
3) he had left more than aninch of open space in front of theword "eight"—plenty of room forinserting the word "thirty."
The court concluded that Mar-tin, by his negligence, had invitedthe tampering—hence, would haveto bear the loss himself.
Of course, as a general rule, abank has no right to pay any moremoney out of your account thanyou have authorized. The bank, after all, has the best opportunityto detect fraud by examining acheck before cashing it.
But the law will usually shiftthe loss to you if, by your care-lessnes, you have made the checkeasy to alter.
Furthermore, you have a dutyto go over your cancelled checkswithin a reasonable time afterthey are returned, and to alert thebank if something is amiss.
For example:A man whose signature had
been forged on a check had toabsorb the loss himself becausehe neglected, for almost sixmonths, to let the bank knowwhat had happened.
A court said that by his pro-crastination, he had deprived thebank of a fair chance to trackdown the villain.
