How do we know the Divine Law
Divine Law
Thursday March 15 2012
Eternal Law law as only God knows it
Divine Law Divine Revelation The law as God reveals it through the church her teachings her
Scriptures It participates in the Eternal Law
Natural Law The law as God reveals it in the heart of each one of us It participates in the Eternal Law
Human Law Ordinary laws in society
Moral Law
Thursday March 15 2012
Through the Natural Law we participate in the wisdom and goodness of God
Natural Law enables us to discern by reason good and evil
If God has implanted the Natural Law on our hearts why is it so hard
Natural Law
Thursday March 15 2012
Because of the sinfulness of the world we do not know the natural law clearly
Therefore we need the help of Divine Revelation
Natural Law is not always obvious
Thursday March 15 2012
Canrsquot we just read Sacred Scripture
Need Divine Revelation
Thursday March 15 2012
Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture have one common source the same divine well-spring CCC 80
The Tradition ldquocomes from the apostlesrdquo who hand ldquoon what they received from Jesus and what they learned from the Holy Spirit
The task of giving an authentic interpretation of the Word of God has been entrusted to the living teaching office of the Church alone ccc 85
Yet this magisterium is not superior to the Word of God but its servantrdquo
Scripture and Tradition
Thursday March 15 2012
Conscience must perceive the principles of morality but how
Conscience as Judgment
Thursday March 15 2012
Conscience must be informed and moral judgment enlightened
The education of conscience is indispensable for human beings who are subjected to negative influences and tempted by sin to prefer their own judgment and to reject authoritative teachings
Informed Conscience
Thursday March 15 2012
The education of the conscience is a lifelong task From the earliest years it awakens the child to the
knowledge and practice of the interior law recognized by conscience
Prudent education teaches virtue it prevents or cures fear selfishness and pride resentment arising from guilt and feelings of complacency born of human weakness and faults
The education of the conscience guarantees freedom and engenders peace of heart CCC 1784
Forming Conscience
Thursday March 15 2012
Guided by the authoritative teaching of the Church55
In the formation of conscience the Word of God is the light for our path CCC 1785
We must assimilate it in faith and prayer and put it into practice
We must also examine our conscience before the Lords Cross
Sources for informing Conscience
Thursday March 15 2012
If one takes little trouble to find out what is true and good
or if someone through sin has so silenced their conscience that they have fallen into denial about their own sin
they may very well be culpable (morally responsible)
Culpable Ignorance
Thursday March 15 2012
If on the contrary the ignorance is invincible by that we mean - cannot be overcome
Then the moral subject is not responsible for the erroneous judgment
Invincible ignorance
Thursday March 15 2012
mandatory benefits to pay for abortifacients oral contraceptives
and sterilizations These benefits in health insurance policies
seen as a victory for womenrsquos health
Obamarsquos HHS mandate
Thursday March 15 2012
We are clear about Church teaching with regard to drug induced abortifacients oral contraceptives and sterilizations
We understand that to financially support these procedures would Promote them
Duty to inform Conscience
Thursday March 15 2012
For Catholic Institutions to financially support these procedures and medications would be equivalent to undermining her primary mission Preaching the Gospel Care of souls
Evangelization
Thursday March 15 2012
How do we respond to the claim that the HHS mandate is a victory for womenrsquos health
Women who are practicing physicians attest that nothing is further from the truth
They claim President Obamarsquos mandate is bad for womenrsquos health and for the profession of medicine
How can we respond

everyone andor less money for the treatment
Cost Savings

Protection of conscience laws ensure that people cannot be forced to facilitate practices or procedures to which they object for reasons of conscience
These may include abortion capital punishment contraception sterilization artificial reproduction euthanasia assisted suicide human experimentation torture
Adequate protection of conscience law should protect conscientious objectors from coercive hiring or employment practices discrimination and other forms of punishment or pressure It should also include protection from civil liability

Three states have no protection of conscience laws Alabama New Hampshire and Vermont

Then the moral subject is not responsible for the erroneous judgment

How do we respond to the claim that the HHS mandate is a victory for womenrsquos health
Women who are practicing physicians attest that nothing is further from the truth
They claim President Obamarsquos mandate is bad for womenrsquos health and for the profession of medicine
