ConocoPhillips funds Virginia Tech LUMENHAUS team

Can a house utilize technology to achieve 100 percent energy effi ciency without sacrifi cing comfort or quality of life? According to members of the LUMENHAUS team, the answer is yes.

With funding from ConocoPhillips, the team of Virginia Tech students constructed a prototype house that integrates computer technology, architectural design and energy effi ciency to enrich daily life. Created using the concept of responsive architecture, the house automatically responds to changing weather conditions by utilizing computer sensors to determine how much to tint the windows, whether to adjust the solar panels, and whether to open or close the blinds.

“We are proud to sponsor the Virginia Tech team,” said Rich Germain, ConocoPhillips manager, alternative en-ergy. “Th e students proved that it is possible to integrate form with content in designing an extraordinarily in-novative yet highly functional house. Th is is more than a house you can feel good about living in because of its energy effi ciency features; it is a house that you would want to live in because it is an appealing living space.”

Th e house recently took top honors at the Solar Decathlon Europe, a global competition for universities to design and build self-suffi cient houses using solar power as the only source of energy. Th e distinction placed the team ahead of 19 other teams, includ-ing two from German universities with extensive government fund-ing and expertise.

“It is particularly rewarding to have success over teams from Germany, the world leader in alternative energy and solar power,” said Robert Dunay, LUMENHAUS faculty advisor and director of the Center for Design Research School of Architecture + Design at Virginia Tech.

Once the house returns from the competition, it will serve as an offi ce and demonstration facility at Virginia Tech. To learn more, visit the LUMENHAUS Web site: http://www.lumenhaus.com/eu/.

Process Technician Ole Gunnar Skjeggestad at the new operations center in Tananger confi rmed full water pressure in wells one and four. Ekofi sk 2/4 VA was producing – ahead of schedule and under budget.

“Th is is an important step toward improved recovery, which is one of the priority areas for the Norwegian Shelf. Th is is a result of daring steps taken when a decision was made to test water injection on Ekofi sk in 1983, and it represents a huge milestone in the work to prolong the life of the Ekofi sk fi eld,” said Bente Nyland at the opening ceremony.

New on Ekofi skTh e opening marks two unique steps: this is the fi rst Conoco-Phillips installation at Ekofi sk to be remote-controlled from land. It is also the fi rst time a water injection unit is installed on the seabed in the Ekofi sk area. “Th e experience we are now gaining by taking integrated operations a step further also has great potential for other

For the fi rst time ever, one of ConocoPhillips installations in the North Sea is being operated from shore. Bente Nyland, director general of the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD), opened the new control center for water injection from the seabed installation Ekofi sk 2/4 VA on May 10.

parts of the company,” said Norway Operations Manager Brage Sandstad.

Ekofi sk 2/4 VA has a capacity of 120,000 barrels of water per day from eight wells, each with a maximum capacity of 30,000 barrels per day. Th e water is injected at high pressure at the wellhead, more than 70 metres below the sea surface. Th is is part of a water injection system which receives water by pipeline from three pumps on Ekofi sk 2/4 K and four on Eldfi sk 2/7 E. A total of about 600,000 barrels of water per day is injected into the Ekofi sk, Eldfi sk and Tor reservoirs to maintain pressure.

Water injection from a dedicated platform started as early as 1987 with Ekofi sk 2/4 K. Today, water injection is the single largest contributing factor to improved recovery rates on Ekofi sk.

Operated from shoreIt is the 12-inch pipeline from Ekofi sk 2/4 K to 2/4 W that has been extended, with a fl exible section about 1,200

metres long. A high-speed fi bre-optic “umbilical” carrying power, service lines and cables for data transmission runs to Ekofi sk 2/4 M and from there on to land. It is this umbili-cal that makes it possible to operate activities on Ekofi sk 2/4 VA from shore.

“We are here round the clock, and we have just as much control over the process as if we were off shore,” Skjeggestad said. He is one of the people responsible for daily operation of the processes carried out at the seabed installation from the Operations Center (OOC) in Tananger.

Good projectMaersk Innovator installed and prepared the subsea tem-plate, manifolds, X-mas trees and all other equipment on deck, and then lifted it into place on the seabed. Remotely operated vehicles (ROV’s) were used in the installation work, and the entire process was accomplished without divers.

Ekofi sk 2/4 VA is the fi rst underwater installation on Ekofi sk after the early production in 1971 using Gulftide. Because of the relatively modest water depth, Ekofi sk has traditionally had platforms with steel jackets resting on the seabed.

Water-injection wells normally require less maintenance and less supervision than regular production wells. “For major maintenance jobs we have to hire a rig to handle the wells. At the same time, this solution is cheaper and provides safer operations than the alternatives,” said Geir Hjelmeland.

Project for the future“Th is project has gone very well, and it is an important part of several projects we are working on to further de-velop the Ekofi sk area. Th is is proof of our commitment to manage the resources and increase value creation in the Ekofi sk area through innovative solutions, both in the development and operations phases. It is an important step in the right direction for our long-term objective – production from the Ekofi sk area for the next 40 years,” said Norway President Steinar Våge.

Will infl uence the future“We have now taken integrated operations another step forward toward a new operating model – a model where we can see what will happen next and then infl uence the future,” said Sandstad.

Over the past few years the company has developed the concept of integrated operations for new areas and will now also apply it to handle the control room functions for the seabed installation of Ekofi sk 2/4 VA. So far, integrated operations have succeeded in providing support to the operations organization off shore.

Th e driving force for these developments is the wish to change the basic operating model for the company. “We want to devote greater eff ort to predicting what will happen and what ought to happen to achieve optimal operations,” Sandstad said.

Th e vision is to achieve even better command over the fac-tors that promote safety, operating regularity and effi cient production. If information is collected at an earlier stage, this may predict and stop unwanted situations before they arise, and it may also prevent expensive production shut-downs or avoidable repairs.

One of the unique features is that numerous people can now work at the same time on real-time data. Th is, com-bined with personnel who are familiar with each other, may promote cooperation and effi cient communication. Th is means that people can work on ordinary operations and on new improvements at the same time. All of this may help us make better decisions and deliver the most effi cient production possible.

“Integrated operations have now become one of the pillars of our operations. Th is means we can also take safety to a new level,” Sandstad said.

Medical Preventive Care CoverageFor Eligible Pre-Age 65 ConocoPhillips Retirees

ConocoPhillips is serious about helping you and your eligible dependents be as healthy as possible. Th at’s why ConocoPhillips medical options off er eligible pre-age 65 retirees low-cost preventive benefi ts.

2010 Medical OptionsPreventive Care CoverageFor Pre-Age 65 Retirees

HDHP – 100% coverage up to $1,500 per person per year

Traditional and PPO – 100% coverage up to $1,000 per person per year

EPO – Applicable copay applies

Coverage rules are the same for all options, with the exception of the EPO, which has stricter frequency and age guidelines. The Plan will cover out-of-network preventive care services for HDHP, Traditional and PPO participants up to the above dollar limits.

ConocoPhillips retirees and their dependents are becoming more engaged in learning about preventive care coverage and taking advantage of these benefi ts. As a result, participants are asking, “What is considered preventive care?” By defi nition, a preventive care or annual exam is a medical exam or service given by a provider when it is “not in connection” with the diagnosis or treatment of a suspected or identifi ed disease or injury. “Not in connection” would mean you have never been treated, diagnosed or suspected to have the identi-fi ed disease (or condition) for which the provider is giving the exam or services. For example, if the provider is performing an annual exam, but you begin talking about symptoms of increased thirst, weight gain, etc., the provider may test you for diabetes, and, generally speaking, this would not be a preventive exam at that point.

An overview of recommended preventive servicesFrequency and age limits only applies to EPO

Mammogram, age 40+ One exam annually

Routine blood work One exam annually

Colonoscopy One exam every 10 years

Preventive eye exam One every year

Preventive hearing exam One every two years

Infl uenza vaccine One every year

Recognize that not every service provided or ordered at the time of your visit may be considered preventive by your provider. In order to reduce unexpected out-of-pocket expenses, we encourage you to consider these preventive care steps.

1) Become familiar with the Plan’s covered services. View the Preventive Benefi ts Guide posted on hr.conocophilips.com, review the Benefi ts Handbook (SPD) also available on hr.conocophillips.com, or contact Aetna to fi nd out what services are recommended as preventive.

2) Talk to your provider’s offi ce. Ask your provider’s offi ce when scheduling your appointment and again during your visit, to indicate which services are non-preventive. Be sure to say exactly what services you are seeking.

3) Present the “Preventive Care” letter to your provider. Th e ConocoPhillips U.S. Ben-efi ts team has prepared a letter for you to present to your provider that explains our preventive care benefi ts and encourages correct preventive care coding. Participants can print the “Preventive Care” letter, which is posted on hr.conocophillips.com, or contact the Benefi ts Center to receive a copy. Have your provider review with you the costs of their services and which amounts will be applied to your preventive care allowance and non-preventive services that will be applied to your deductible and/or coinsurance. Decide together if you want to proceed with services that are not considered preventive.

4) Check your billing statement. Th e diagnosis codes for preventive care services should begin with the letter V. Talk to your provider’s offi ce when you check out because the order in which codes appear on a claim can also aff ect whether procedures are covered.

5) Make inquiries if you think there is a billing error. If you have any questions when you receive your Explanation of Benefi ts (EOB), please call the number on the front of your insurance card. Sometimes, billing errors do occur and can be corrected. Aetna or your provider’s offi ce may clarify why the service wasn’t fully covered.

In the Community Eskimo DanceIn April, the Alpine Field in Alaska, which sits on native Inupiat (In-yoo-pi-at) land, hosted the local Inupiat Eski-mo Dance group from the village of Nuiqsut, located eight miles south-southwest of the facility. Twelve members of the Uyugagvinmiut (Ooh-you-ga-ga-vin-me-oot) Dancers performed tradi-tional dances in the dining room for Alpine operations personnel during their evening dinner hour.

Th e dances performed by the group would have been forgotten had it not been for a few village elders sharing their knowledge of the dances with the group. Th e Uyugagvinmiut Dancers, named after one of the earlier settle-ments arising before Nuiqsut (located north of Nuiqsut on the Nigliq channel) keep the tradition alive within the com-munity and for future generations.

During the performance for Alpine employees, group mem-bers dressed in traditional clothes, played drums made of seal skin stretched over wood and performed traditional dances.

by John Murry and Hazel Munoz

Th e dances celebrated major events, such as whaling expedi-tions, and acknowledged elders both past and present. All the dances included singing and were performed in the Inupiat Eskimo language.

Th e Inupiat people have thrived for thousands of years in some of the harsh-est climates, hunting bowhead whales in the Arctic Ocean, which they call “Agviq” (Uh-ga-vick). Other traditional resources come from fi shing in the local lakes and rivers, as well as hunting cari-bou, moose, ducks and geese.

Th e Alpine Field has an ongoing rela-tionship with the community of Nuiq-

sut. Each year special events are organized between the two lo-cations to strengthen this relationship. In the winter, when the resupply ice road is available, residents of Nuiqsut are invited over for scheduled Sunday dinners. Alpine employees recipro-cate by traveling to Nuiqsut to play basketball with the local high school team. Alpine employees are always mindful that our operations are in the Inupiat community’s backyard.
