Topic Proposal: Uses and Legalization of Marijuana

Introduction/Overview

For my inquiry project, I will be discussing two major controversies related to the usage

pros and cons of marijuana, and the debate on whether or not marijuana should be legalized

nationwide in the United States. I want to lay down all the facts and see each side’s argument to

these two topics. I myself am a marijuana advocate and would like to know more about the drug.

According to a 2009 national survey by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, more than 104

million Americans over the age of 12 had tried marijuana at least once. This number has seen a

steep increase over time and is still skyrocketing. This is perhaps the reason why so much

controversy is going on regarding this topic. Since I fit into this category, I need to know if being

a part of this statistic is a good or a bad thing.

First let’s look at what marijuana is in the first place. Marijuana refers to the dried leaves,

flowers, stems, and seeds from the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa. The plant contains the mind-

altering chemical delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol most commonly referred to as THC. Marijuana is

the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States. Marijuana can be used in a multitude of

ways and situations, and some of the uses are still being discovered today.

Since most of marijuana users are teens or young adults ages 12-25, there is tension

between parents and their kids. Parents tend to be either against, or questioning the use of

marijuana for the simple fact that they want to protect their kids. This along with health

information have been driving forces for the ever increasing research on marijuana. Some health

concerns people have with the drug is that it may reduce thinking, memory, and learning

functions and affect how the brain builds connections between the areas necessary for these

functions, along with the possibility of hallucination and paranoia to list a few.

Currently there are 23 states that have either legalized the use of medical marijuana, four

of which have legalized it for recreational use as well. In Alaska one can possess up to an ounce

of marijuana and six plants. In Oregon one can have an ounce on them and eight ounces in their

residence. A number of states have also decriminalized the possession of small amounts of

marijuana. All this legalization must be happening for some reason or another and that’s what

I’m going to dive into in my paper.

My interest comes from a want to know more about the drug. I want to know how it

works. What are people’s views on the topic? What science backs these views? The driving force

behind my research into this topic comes from an experience I had in my personal life. On

February 4th of this year I got off probation for one count of possession of marijuana, and one

count of marijuana paraphernalia. I was on probation for six months, and it was one of the worst

experiences in my life. This experience made me feel like I need to learn more about the drug

and others views on the topic in comparison to mine.

Next Steps

To continue my seeking of knowledge on the topic, I will continue to do detailed

research. I will utilize many different websites, as there are many that have drastically different

views on these topics. Government and medical sites are probably the best sites to use for this

research because they tend to be unbiased. I will end up talking to my friend who lives in

Colorado (legal state) and asking him questions on what he observes in the marijuana culture

surrounding a legal state and comparing them to my views and others who live in states where

marijuana is illegal.

research. Be specific because that enhances your essay and what you wish to find out in your

research. I enjoy the fact that you’re doing research on this project, it will be a very interesting

end result. Just make sure to do proper research in order to back up your view in your actual

assignment. You may be able to persuade others. Only state what you feel is your proposition
