will be permitted in the bar.
Guests will be entertained by
a D.J. in the afternoon and
later the New Haven Hose
bagpipers will parade
through the bar.
Another tradition, the Bud
Murphy’s official “St. Pat’s”
tee shirt is now on sale.
On St. Patrick’s Day (March
17) hundreds of people with
Irish roots and of course,
those who wish they were
Irish will congregate at Bud
Murphy’s Sports Bar and
Restaurant. In addition to
being a local landmark, this
sports bar has been a St.
Paddy’s Day tradition in the
area for well over 50 years.
Bud Murphy’s Sports Bar
and Restaurant is located at
718 McCormick Avenue and
has been in existence for
over 60 years. It was start-
ed as a small dairy bar
owned by Bud and Hazel
Murphy. Over the decades,
it emerged into one of the
largest local gathering spots
in Fayette County. Bud and
Hazel are both deceased
and the bar is now owned
and managed by their
daughter Robin Bubarth.
“I don’t quite remember the
exact year that we started
this St. Patrick’s Day tradi-
tion, but it continues to grow
over the years,” said Robin
Bubarth.
Bud Murphy’s is one of the
few bars that annually cele-
brates St. Patrick’s Day on
the actual date –
March 17.
According to
Robin, the first
party was sug-
gested by cus-
tomer Mary
Moore. She sug-
gested to Robin’s
father Bud that
the bar “really”
celebrate St.
Patrick’s Day and they have
been hosting a party in that
fashion ever since.
For the first party, Robin’s
mother Hazel cooked one
roaster of beef stew to give
away to customers (this is in
comparison to the 5-6 roast-
ers that they now prepare).
Then, Bud bought hats and
leis to give away to the cus-
tomers as favors in the
years that followed. And,
that’s how this popular tradi-
tion was born.
In 1969, Robin’s husband
Bob (on the guitar) and his
brother Joe (on the accordi-
on) first played Irish songs
for a sing-along. They
played for about three years
until Bud found the “Tune
Tailors” who are from Jean-
ette. The group still plays
every St. Patrick’s Day in the
dining room.
In preparation for this year’s
celebration, Robin will order
6-8 kegs of green beer and
almost $1,000 worth of hats,
beads and other favors
(which the bar gives away to
customers). There will be
security that night and no
one under 21 years of age

Be sure to come early that
day, as Bud Murphy’s does
not take reservations for St.
Patrick’s Day and the bar is
quite busy from lunch time
until close. See you there!
