    Holistic Health

If you have always fallen straight tosleep as soon as your head touchesthe pillow, it can be hard to knowwhats changed if you suddenly starthaving problems sleeping. This articlewill help you to identify some simplechanges you can make to ensure youget a good night's sleep. Can't sleep? You may start to worry if you haventbeen sleeping very well, but missingout on a night or twos sleep isnt usually harmful to your health. It will justmake you feel tired, and then a fewgood nights of rest should meanyoure back on form.?However, if youdont get a good sleep for severalnights, you may start to feel:constantly tiredsleepy during the day and may evenfall asleepunable to concentrateindecisivedepressedThis is when it can start affecting yourhealth and its worth thinking aboutwhether it may be your lifestyle or environment thats disrupting yoursleep.Sleep hygieneIt may seem obvious, but if you have

put up with a lumpy mattress or noisyneighbours for years, it can be easy tooverlook these things as the cause ofyour sleep deprivation. Its worth thinking about the following points toensure that you have good sleepinghabits referred to as sleep hygiene. Is your mattress comfy?A mattress thats too firm or too soft wont support you properly. You generally need to replace a mattressevery 10 years to get the best supportand comfort.Make sure your bedroom is comfortable and quiet, and not toohot or too cold.Think about if there are any noises orlighting that may be waking you if so,can you reduce their effects? Youmight need thicker curtains or blinds ifyoure blasted with sunlight in themorning, particularly in the summertime. Earplugs can help if your part-ners snoring is the cause of your trou-bles.Only use your bedroom for sleep or sex rather than working, eating or watching TV. This will help you to associate the bedroom with being arelaxing environment.

March is National Bed Month. Follow this guide to help youhave the perfect nights sleep.

Good routineOur bodies get used to a routine. Ifyoure up until the early hours andsleep in late for a few days in a row, your body wont be ready for sleep ifyou try to go to bed early the followingnight.Try to go to bed and get up at thesame times each day even at theweekend.Dont nap during the day.Establish a regular bedtime routine take some time out to relax and winddown before going to bed by havinga warm bath, sitting in a quiet place orreading.Stress less Feeling stressed or anxious is a key reason for insomnia. If youre stressedor worried about something, writingdown your thoughts before going tosleep can help. If this doesnt help, getup and do something relaxing for 20minutes, such as reading a book orwatching television, then try to getback to sleep later.?Some people findthat practising relaxation techniques, such as listening to self-hypnosis CDs,meditation or t'ai chi, before going tobed can distract you from your dayand make you feel calm beforerest.?Its important to recognise ifyoure stressed, and to do somethingabout it if its becoming a serious prob-lem and making you tired. Often, talking to a friend, relative or counsellor can help to put things intoperspective.Eat and drink wellWhat you eat and drink, and when, affects your energy levels. Caffeineand alcohol can stop you from goingto sleep or can wake you up in themiddle of the night, so try not to drinkeither too close to the time you go tobed.?If you eat sugary foods or aheavy meal too late at night, it canalso affect how well you sleep, so try

having your main meal earlier in theday.Exercise wiseIf you combine eating healthily withphysical activity 150 minutes of moderate exercise over a week inbouts of 10 minutes or more is recommended this should help youto sleep better, meaning you havemore energy the next day. If youhavent exercised for a while, startslowly and build up. Once you get intoa routine, not only will you feel fitterand less tired, but youre likely to findthat you sleep better too. The besttime to exercise is during the day, particularly late in the afternoon orearly evening. If you exercise laterthan this, it can disturb your sleep, as itcan leave you feeling invigorated andmore awake making it harder for youto get to sleep.Take careIf youre not sleeping well, its important not to do activities that mayput you or others in danger if youretired. This can include driving, operating machinery or having tomake crucial decisions at work orhome.?If you continue to have troublesleeping after trying the above measures particularly if its beengoing on for longer than a month itsworth asking your GP for advice.

You dont have to beperfect and youdont have to completely eliminate foodsyou enjoy to have a

healthy diet. We all need a balance ofcarbohydrates, protein, fat, fibre, vitamins, and minerals to sustain a healthybody.

Here are the main ones to think about:Choose healthy carbohydrates and

fibre sources, especially whole grains, forlong lasting energy. Studies have shownpeople who eat more whole grains tendto have a healthier heart. You shouldinclude whole grains, beans, fruits, andvegetables.

Unhealthy carbs are foods such aswhite flour, refined sugar, and white ricethat have been stripped of all bran. Try toavoid refined foods such as white breads, pastas, and breakfast cereals that are notwhole grain.

Fat is good! Well most of the time, butjust think about the type of fat you areputting into your body. Healthy fats ourneeded in are body to nourish your brain, heart, and cells and also your hair, skin, and nails.

Add monounsaturated fats, from plantoils, peanut oil and olive oil, as well as avocados, nuts and seeds.

Polyunsaturated fats, including omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, found in fattyfish such as salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies, and sardines.

We should be limiting our about of saturated fats, these are found primarily inanimal sources including red meat and

whole milk dairy products. We need to also start limiting the trans

fats as these are the worst for our body. These are found in things like crisps, sweets, cookies and biscuits, fried foodsand other processed foods made withpartially hydrogenated vegetable oils.

Eat more protein! The latest researchsuggests that most of us need more highquality protein than the current dietaryrecommendations. It also suggests thatwe need more protein as we age tomaintain physical function.

So replacing processed carbs with highquality protein like chicken or fish is good. This can improve your good cholesteroland reduce your risk for heart disease andstroke.

Sugar! This causes energy ups anddowns and usually adds to health andweight problems. Most people are notaware of the amount of sugar they consume. This is because large amountsof added sugar can be hidden in mostfoods! Start by avoiding sugary drinks. Buyunsweetened things instead.

Salt is a problem, and eating too muchsalt can cause high blood pressure andlead to other health problems. Againavoid processed or pre-packaged foods.Processed foods like canned soups orfrozen dinners contain hidden sodium thatquickly surpasses the recommended limit.Buy fresh or frozen vegetables instead ofcanned vegetables. • It would be nice to think that one dayyou will reach a point where you arefinancially secure and have everything that you need to maintain alifestyle that you enjoy. You may havegrown up children and extended familyand it is at this point that you may inher-it a large sum of money from an elderlyrelative. Whilst this is great for you, froman Inheritance Tax (IHT) point of viewthe inheritance will increase your taxable estate and if it then exceedsyour available nil rate band (or bands)your windfall will end up being taxed at40% before it passes to your family viayour Will.

If you do not need the money youmay want to pass it on to your familyduring your lifetime (and then they cansay thank you!) or you may be concerned about the potentialincrease in your IHT liability or you maybe worried that if you give it away it willnot be available to you if you need touse the money in the future.

Before you decide to do anything, consider your options. Make a lifetime gift, receive the inheritance and then make a gift of it toyour family.

For this to be effective for IHT purposes, you must not benefit from thegift in any way and you must survive thegift by seven years otherwise its valuewill be counted back into your estatewhen you die: or Enter into a Deed of Variation of theWill or Intestacy (ie. where there is noWill) and divert the inheritance to yourfamily.

For IHT purposes, by using a Deed ofVariation the gift is regarded as comingdirectly from the deceased and notfrom you. It does not effect your own

IHT position and you do not have to survive for seven years for it to be effective; or Create a Trust by varying the Will orIntestacy (as above) but passing theinheritance into a trust rather than gifting it absolutely.

Because, for IHT purposes, the gift willbe from the deceased and not fromyou, you can be one of the beneficiaries and if the trust is discretionary then the money in it willnot be counted as part of your estatewhen you die. By being a Trustee youcan also exercise some control overhow the funds are used.

2015 is The Gage Players 65th anniversary year!

The Gage Players spring production will be Murder in Play by Simon Brett.Boris Smolenskys budget repertory production of Murder at PriorswellManor is looking decidedly shaky, being mostly held together by long-suffering stage manager Pat. The cast, and the director, are more interestedin their egos than in the play, and life imitates art when Boriss wife, Renee, is murdered on stage. So whodunnit? Could it be dimwit Ginette, Boriss currentmistress? Or Ginettes ex-boyfriend Tim? Or professional jealousy from Christaor Sophie? And is Boris completely guiltless? This play within a play providesbewildering clues, hilarious gaffes from the inept actors and red herrings galoreto keep the audience guessing right till the end. Simon Brett is well known forhis radio plays, his Charles Paris series of theatrical thriller novels, and his crimeseries of Fethering mystery novels, so to have a stage play by him is a treat.

Performances on 23rd, 24th and 25th April, 2015 at8pm at the Riddell Hall, Walton on the Hill. Doors andbar open at 7.30pm. Tickets 10 including tea or coffee from box office 01737 812 703.

Announcing Windows 10 possiblerelease date Summer 2015

For Windows 8.1 Users it may be freefor one year.

Just as we get used to the idea of onerelease from Microsoft they deliveranother one with yet more enhance-ments. One interesting enhancement, which I believe we are all making moreuse of these days is the ability to speakto our gadgets. We use Siri on the ipad,we use voice search in google and nowin Windows 10 Cortana comes to town.

Microsoft's voice-driven CortanaPersonal assistant can help you organise your life. There's always aCortana bar in the taskbar and you cantype a search in there, or tap theCortana circle to see a welcome panewith your news, interests, weather andother Cortana info.

You can tap the microphone icon to

talk to Cortana If you want to search forfiles you can type or say things like "showme my files about charity" or "show memy photos from last month" or "show memy slides from this year". That opens anew window with a list of files, not anExplorer window. Watch this space formore news on Windows 10 anothernew generation.
