1. Promote voter education, registration, mobilization and participation.

2. Increase african american voter participation rates in the 2016 election to mirror or exceed the 2008 and 2012 outcomes.

3. Galvanize our diverse membership to become a united force for change through the Take a.C.T.I.O.N. Program (advocate, Communicate, Train, Infl uence, Organize and Network) and our Voter awareness Program, “Be Th e VOICe”.

4. Off er leadership development opportunities that educate sorors to seek appointments and election to public offi ces.

ADVOCATESorority members are asked to “advocate” for local, state and federal legislation that:

1. Supports fairness for all people;2. Promotes equal and equitable access to justice for all people; and 3. Calls for the appointment of special prosecutors or special hearing masters to present the

government’s case/evidence in grand jury proceedings where law enforcement offi cials are accused of wrongdoing.

Members are also asked to “advocate” for local, state and federal legislation that supports the goals of the sorority’s international program.

TRAINSorority chapters are asked to “train” members and citizens in their communities on basic elements of the grand jury process and procedure. Th ey are also asked to promulgate the Sorority’s Be THe VOICe voter awareness program through voter registration drives, candidates’ forums, and informative panels or workshops on the political process.

INFLUENCESorority members are encouraged to “infl uence” their local, state and federal government representatives to introduce, lobby for, and pass legislation that refl ects the community values, interests and that further the programmatic goals of the Sorority and its members. 

ORGANIZESorority members are asked to “organize” voter education campaigns, Registration drives, and Get Out the Vote eff orts in their local communities.

NETWORKChapters are asked to “network” with other chapters, local civic and Service organizations, elected offi cials and political infl uencers for information, information sharing and resources. “Network” to gain greater insight on available positions for elected or appointed offi ces and how to leverage membership size and common interests to improve local communities.

BE THE VOICECAMPAIGN

“Be the VOICE” is Alpha Kappa Alpha’s voter awareness program addressing education, registration, mobilization and participation.

OBJECTIVES:  Equip, Educate and Encourage

OBJECTIVE #1 – eQUIP aND eNGaGe LOCaL LeaDeRS:  equip Sorority leaders with the tools necessary to engage chapter members and communities in successful voter education, registration, mobilization and participation activities.

OBJECTIVE #2 -  eDUCaTe BY SHaRING ReLeVaNT eLeCTION INFORMaTION:  educate the electorate on the importance of voting; share relevant dates for various elections; and provide data and strategies to assist in planning and executing  activities regarding local, state and federal elections.

OBJECTIVE #3 – eNCOURaGe BLaCk VOTeR TURNOUT:  Work with chapters to conduct activities that will result in raising Black voter turnout in the 2016 elections to same or greater levels as the 2008 and 2012 elections.

BE THE VOICE CAMPAIGN OVERVIEW“Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting.”

JANUARY - MARCHVoter Education and Voter RegistrationMost electoral activity is over by the end of December (with the exception of run off s). Chapters should focus on educating communities and getting eligible voters registered in January, February and March.

OCTOBER - DECEMBERVoter Mobilization and Voter Participationearly voting, general election voting and run off elections tend to take place in October, November and December. Chapters should focus on getting voters out to vote during that time.

APRIL - JUNEVoter Mobilization and Voter Participation

Special elections, primaries and caucuses (excluding Super Tuesday which takes place in March) tend to take place in april, May and June. Chapter activities should focus on getting voters out to vote during this time.

JULY - SEPTEMBERVoter Education and Voter RegistrationMany deadlines for voter registration - to participate in November elections - are 20 to 30 days before the election. Chapters should focus on educating and registering voters throughout the summer, i.e. July, august and September.
