2012 Food Drive• The Food Drive is officially over! OSU’s goal for the 2012 Food Drive

was 580,000 lbs of food; did OSU reach that goal? We’ll let you know once all results are in. Thanks to everyone who donated food, bought books or baked goods, or played one of our games!

Happy Birthday! Long-time INTO OSU employee and ESL instructor Maggie Powers got a special surprise on February 25th! When asked how long Maggie has been teaching, Rachel Powell chimed in: “She tutored Moses...” Rachel was behind this birthday surprise, and everyone in the office pitched in! Happy Birthday, Maggie!

Technology Across the Curriculum is a great resource for faculty members who want to incorporate technology into their classroom. Workshops, webinars and web resources provide faculty members valuable information to help them more effectively use technology. From information on how to use Blackboard to how to create great PowerPoint slides, TAC is available to help.

One of TAC’s new webinars is The Blackboard Innovative Teaching Series (BITS). Katie Mitchell, INTO OSU’s Technology Advisor, has trumpeted the value and versatility of Blackboard, and TAC can help you delve even deeper into the possibilities. The BITS webinar explores many advanced features of Blackboard.

The next webinar will be on March 27th from 10am to 11am. This edition will cover how to use adaptive release, Blackboard’s ability to release content to users based on rules set up by an instructor. This webinar will explore the more advanced features of adaptive release and how it can improve learning and decrease the amount of questions students may have. More webinars from this series are coming up each month through July.

INTO OSU instructor Carly Gerig loves karaoke! So on the last day of one of her English Through Music elective courses, she brought in a special activity: karaoke! Not only is it fun, but it’s a great way for students to translate written English into verbal English. It took some work to get students up in front of the class singing, but once they did, they had a lot of fun.

Karaoke, anyone? Carly Gerig presents students with a fun activity

Food Drive Update!

Thanks to Nikki Hinshaw and Lois Knutson, the 2012 Food Drive Bake Sale was a huge success! More than $150 was raised, all of which will be donated to the Food Drive. There was such a great variety of baked goods; Nikki and Lois were impressed by how many people contributed! From cookies (peanut butter, pumpkin) to homemade biscotti and some gluten-free options, the selection was excellent. Thanks to everyone who staffed the table, as well!

The Baby Picture Guessing Game also came to an end, having raised $28! This was a fun, lively activity! Thanks to Mary Hughes for organizing it!

Seong-Hyeok Han, South Korea, takes the stage!

Mohammad Almoslim, from Saudi Arabia, wasn’t too shy about singing “Sweet Home Alabama” in front of the class!

Instructor Carly Gerig got the class started!

Help raise money for the OSU Food Drive!

Buy some delicious baked goods! All proceeds go

directly to the OSU Food Drive charity.

Aleksadra Zalogina, from Russia, decides which staff member belongs to which baby photo.

Dai Chen, in the green jacket, snaps one of two photos with her iPad.Jiajin Xi, left, from China, and Jae Hoon Kim, from South Korea, discuss why they chose each photo.

iPads in the Classroom: Using iPads, Facebook and Center resources concurrentlyKahramon Gafurov, a member of the iPad exploratory committee, brought students out of the classroom during the Food Drive Baby Picture Guessing Game as part of an activity they were carrying out in his class. Using iPads, students had to attempt to identify a staff member and their baby photo. The guess didn’t have to be right; the student just had to be able to explain why they chose the pair. Each student would upload the two photos, along with their explanation, and other students would discuss each pair under the Facebook comments. This was an introductory activity which will lead up to the class’s final project - a compare and contrast essay, comparing two academic articles. This activity really puts new technology to good use in the INTO OSU Center. Thanks, Kahramon!
