“I'd trade all my tomorrows for one single yesterday.”

― Kris Kristofferson

Working in GBS has been one of the most enriching journeys of my professional life . My

association with GBS started as visiting faculty, later I joined as full time faculty member. I

was one of the privileged members of faculty who had the honor of teaching the first batch

of GBS. Some of the students are still in touch and are doing extremely well in their lives.

I still distinctly remember the enthusiasm and hustle-bustle during GALACTO, the team

spirit during the sports event , interactions during the lectures….. Students participated

wholeheartedly and with loads of enthusiasm and commitment in the both academics as

well as extracurricular activities.

And about my colleagues who were very motivating and supportive. The administrative

staff took care of all the administrative work which helped us to focus better on our core

activities. I was totally soaked in GBS culture which was very friendly and stress free but

never compromised on the performance. I still carry a part of it along with me.

Proud to be associated with GBS.

Wishing GBS all the very best for all its future endeavors.

WORLD BOOK DAY AT GBS LIBRARY

Global Business School, Hubli organized the World Book Day on 23-4-2013 to 25-4-2013 at its Library to celebrate the International Day of the Book or World Book Days.

The World book day was celebrated in a unique way at Global Business school library by having a Book Display of various and vivid collations.

PROF. JAGDISH PATIL ALONG WITH PROF.BHARGAV RAVANKAR AND LIBRARIAN VIJAY DESHABAG AND TO THE EXTREME RIGHT PROF.MAHESH BENDIGEI

World Book Day is a yearly event on 23 April, organized by UNESCO to promote reading, publishing and copyright. In 1995, UNESCO decided that the World Book and Copyright Day would be celebrated on this date the date is also the anniversary of the birth and death of William Shakespeare, the death of Miguel de Cervantes, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and Josep Pla, and the birth of Maurice Druon, Manuel Mejía Vallejo and Halldór Laxness.

Hence GBS Library decided to mark this event with its own style of celebrating it to promote reading habits and create awareness about the vast collection of the library.

On the first day that is on 23/4/2013 the books on case studies covering various subject cases with solutions were on the display. In addition to the books the compact disc of case studies were also the part of the exhibition.

The second day was on the books related to General Management. The library having a vast collection of General Management were display and the users of the library were extremely a happy to see the vast collections

The Third and the concluding day was on fictions and it was also able to pull lots of attention of students and faculties.

Objective

The main objective of holding a book display is to make students friendlier about books,

which is always not possible by only seeing the jacket of the book or reading book reviews.

To create awareness and to establish the habit of reading in its students.

Conclusion: All though library follows an open access system , the users still ignore the

books kept in the racks and never takes pain to reach through the books and when such

book display is organized suddenly you find that the users are taken aback to see such rich

collection of books.

Surprising when the book display was arranged the reservation of books went on a high

speed and appreciation and realizing that library had some wonderful collection was

realized. The event was successful as the users showed overwhelming response.

During the period of one year GBS library has given its best to attract the users through

conducting many programs and more over it has used the GBS FOCUS newsletter to attract

the user’s community and had been a part of appreciation from the Faculty and students,

we heartily congratulate the Library Team for carrying out an excellent Show.

Reflex Vs Impulse

"Sandhya Vasudev has been a bank officer, presently a trainer and a

freelancer in writing and teaching."

During one of my sessions I was asked if reflex action and impulsive action mean the same.

They are not. Who has not heard of reflex action? A spinal reflex is an automatic, rapid

response to a stimulus. The action is involuntary and occurs without any involvement of

thought i.e., the brain. In humans, this action occurs through a neural pathway called the

reflex arc. To allow reflexes to occur very quickly, signals come directly from motor

neurons in the spine, instead of being delayed by going through the brain.

After this spinal reflex occurs, sensory neurons send messages to the brain. The brain

then relays this information and the messages are consciously interpreted. It is only at this

point that you will begin to feel pain.

Though this seems like a complicated process, spinal reflexes occur in less than one

second. Within that same second, the brain will consciously interpret the information and

the person will feel pain.

Have you seen a cook suddenly bend backwards as the seasoning starts to splutter on the

stove? Or have you instinctively drawn your hand away when a cat suddenly jumped on

you? Or let out a scream when something almost fell surprisingly on you? I have done all of

them. These are classic examples of our reflexes working perfectly. Nothing to worry!

But now impulsive actions are something different. These are voluntary and conscious

actions committed without much forethought or analysis of the consequences. A kind

Page 9: Connecting Stakeholders Building Relationship · All four places that is Delhi, Amritsar, Manali, Agra – were covered. Overall trip was good and all of us enjoyed a lot, especially

9

action done on an impulse is fine, and is to be encouraged, as many a time a charitable

thought is pushed away on second thoughts!

But hold on, how many times each one of you has thought, “I should not have spoken so or

should not have done so?” It is exactly this type of impulse that needs to be checked. There

is a saying that goes “Think before you speak, speak not all you think”. Control of impulse

requires conscious decision which results from a feeling of calmness experienced even at

those noose tightening moments. When you are spoken to in what you think an unfair

manner or some incident occurs over which you have no control, please wait for some

moments or even let a night pass, before you react. You will wake up with a balanced

perspective of the situation and find that your initial reaction has fizzled off. If the same

reaction persists, rest assured that it is correct and go ahead with it!

You will thank yourself for delaying your reaction. In such situations delay brings in good

result with the problem sometimes sorting itself out. So next time onwards, relax, reflect

and react. You will end up happier with these 3Rs and gain respect too.

GMG Coordinator

Experience of North India Trip 2013

………By Students of Industrial committee

It was really an amazing fun experience for all of us, the tour was planned out for 10

Days in the month of May from 16th to 25th.

The preparation started for this trip in the month of Feb, The Industrial

coordinators worked effectively under guidance of Prof. Kiran Ambekar [Industrial Tour

coordinator]. In the beginning we faced the problem in deciding the tour location, because

we had 3 options, 1] Kolkatta WB 2] Gujarat & 3] Delhi students.

Finally students ended up selecting Delhi belt which covered places Agra, Amritsar, Kulu

Manali. During the trip everything went good as per the plan, initially we have visited Delhi

and unfortunately we could not spend sufficient time, it is due to time shortage, so there

students were bit sad. Due to busy and tight schedule all were fully tired of travelling in

bus.

All four places that is Delhi, Amritsar, Manali, Agra – were covered. Overall trip was

good and all of us enjoyed a lot, especially Kulu Manali was fantastic for all of us and we had

good experience.

Here is the Glimpses of the memorable tour.

Who spoke on the how an entrepreneur is born, what are his qualities and how he sees the

world, a more of effectual thinking is involved. An entrepreneur is not the one who has only

brilliant ideas or has six or seven zero’s in his/her b-plan, its about understanding the need

in the market (environment).

We also had an opportunity to visit Polyhedron Industries, which manufactures Piston

Pumps, Valves, Pressure Controlers, Switches .It gave us an exposure to live industrial

working and how production units work.

NEW ARRIVALS

Economic Policies and India's Reform Agenda:

New Thinking 1 Edition

Has the still-threatening global financial crisis really signalled the

weaknesses of Economics, the scientific discipline as we know it? This

question has inspired a volume of essays from Y. V. Reddy.

Navigating through the debates between 2010 and 2012 on the

continuing global financial crisis, Economic Policies and India’s

Reform Agenda: New Thinking reflects the confidence of the former

central banker who steered the nation’s banks to safer waters.

Reddy seeks a change in economic thought and policy-making.

Arguing for a three-fold shift in the discipline, he calls for broadening the focus of policy-

makers, improvisation in the tools employed by economists and an emphasis on empirical

evidence. This ‘new thinking’, he says, will contribute to India’s accelerated development.

New Thinking addresses three concerns of economic thought for a developing economy: public

policy after the crisis, the role of the financial sector in development, and the lessons learnt from

world economies. Novel in approach, this volume critically examines India’s development

strategies and suggests a ‘redefining’ of the role of the financial sector in accelerating

development. The author’s observations on other developing economies and analyses of the

diverse uncertainties enable a comprehensive understanding of the influence of global factors on

the reform agenda for India.

Reddy’s New Thinking is built on experience that is gifted with foresight and understanding of

theory. His language is fluid, his ideas objective, his prescriptions visionary. This collection will

inspire debates, and encourage fresh perspectives on attaining the desired growth rate in India.

As it addresses a readership committed to developments in the Indian economy, his analyses are

certain to question some popular convictions on the country’s economic thought and policies.

About the Author

Dr Y. V. Reddy was Governor of the Reserve Bank of India between 2003 and 2008. He has

recently been appointed the Chairman of the Fourteenth Finance Commission.

The Darker Side of Black Money 2nd Edition

When former Swiss banker Rudolf Elmer handed over information about

bank accounts of over 2,000 individuals to WikiLeaks, it stirred the world.

This was probably the first step towards the opening of a closet of

skeletons, and skeletons they were of politicians, god men, terrorists, oil

barons and kings. The details are still awaited but even then, the fact

largely known but seldom acknowledged, primarily because of the high-

profile names attached with it, has hit the headlines both in India and

abroad.

The Darker Side of Black Money discusses this ugly side of dirty money and the murky hands

that handle it and tells us how everyone from the banks to individuals, fathers to sons, politicians

to mafia dons, god men to terrorists-all follow every possible trick to clandestinely hide their

large, unaccounted cache of black money from friends and foes alike.

It talks about the demand and supply of secret money and how the likes of Swiss banks carve

rules that clearly mean? Come, hide it with us". It discusses various terms such as money

laundering and drug trafficking that are often used but not always understood. Besides, it

explains why certain countries, termed as tax havens, are more conducive to such stashing of

cash.

Unfortunately, the problem doesn't end with hiding the money. In fact, it begins here. From

funding terrorism to destabilizing a government, this dirty money comes in handy in everything

that is murky and illegal. This book unfolds the mystery and explains the modus operandi of this

dirty money business.

This revised edition includes new material on the rise and growth of criminal organizations,

traces the origins of tax havens, a comment on Indian corruption among other topical issues and

new examples and case studies.

About the Author B.V. Kumar joined the Indian Revenue Service in 1958 and held various coveted posts in his 35

years of service. He was the Director General Revenue Intelligence, Director General, Narcotics

Control Bureau and Director General, Economic Intelligence Bureau. In his tenure he was

responsible for busting many syndicates operating trans-nationally, smuggling contraband, drugs

and organized economic crime. He was responsible for detaining and prosecuting some of the

top smugglers and tax evaders. The Illustrated Weekly of India in a

front cover called him The Super Sleuth".

He also held the post of Member, Central Board of Excise and Customs. Mr Kumar has

represented India on various occasions such as International Conference held at Vienna for

Substances, 1988, and various Interpol meetings held between 1985 and 1988 and led the Indian

delegation for SAARC Technical Committee on Drugs. Besides, he was elected President of the

Drugs Committee during the Interpol Conference held in 1987, in Nice.

He has authored The Preventive Detention Laws of India and co-authored The Narcotics Drugs

and Psychotropic Substances Laws of India. He has published a number of papers on law,

taxation, terrorism and organized crime.

Poor Economics: Rethinking Poverty & the Ways to

End it (Paperback)

A pathbreaking book on poverty from two of the hottest young

economists today

Imagine you have a few billion dollars and want to spend it on the

poor. How do you go about it? Billions of government dollars, and

thousands of charitable organizations and NGOs, are dedicated to

helping the worlds poor. But much of their work is based on

assumptions about the poor and the world that are untested

generalizations at best, harmful misperceptions at worst.

Abhijit V. Banerjee and Esther Duflo have pioneered the use of

randomized control trials (RCTs) in development economics through their award-winning

Poverty Action Lab. They argue that by using RCTs and, more generally, by paying careful

attention to the evidence, it is possible to make accurate and often startling assessments on what

really impacts the poor and what doesnt.

Revelatory and impassioned, Poor Economics is a pathbreaking book that will help you to

understand the real causes of poverty and how to end it.

About the Author Abhijit Banerjee is the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at MIT. He is a

fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Econometric Society and has

been a Guggenheim Fellow. He has also received the inaugural Infosys Prize (2009) in Social

Sciences and Economics.

Esther Duflo is the Abdul Latif Jameel Professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development

Economics at MIT. Duflo has received numerous academic honours and prizes including most

recently the John Bates Clark Medal (2010) and a MacArthur Fellowship (2009). She has also

been featured in Foreign Policys Top 100 Global Thinkers and Fortunes 40 under 40.

Now, Discover Your Strengths New Edition

Based on a Gallup study of over two million people who have

excelled in their careers, NOW, DISCOVER YOUR STRENGTHS

uses a revolutionary programme to help readers discover their

distinct talents and strengths. The product of a twenty-five year,

multi-million pound effort to identify the most prevalent human

talents, the Strengths Finder programme introduces thirty-four

talents or 'themes' and reveals how they can best be translated into

personal and career success.

Each copy of the book contains a unique password that gives the

reader access to the Strengths Finder Profile, a Web-based

interview that analyses people's instinctive reactions and

immediately presents them with their five most dominant strengths.

Once readers know which of the thirty-four talent themes

dominates their personality, they can make practical applications at

three levels: as an individual, as a manager and within an organisation. Readers learn what kind

of environments will allow them to flourish; how managers can better cultivate their employers'

talents; and how almost all organisations inhibit the talents of their people and need to change.

About The Author Donald Clifton is the Chairman Emeritus of The Gallup Organization and the current chair of

the Gallup International Research and Education Center. He is the chief designer of the

StrengthsFinder Profile.

Marcus Buckingham is the co-author of the best-selling books FIRST, BREAK ALL THE

RULES and NOW, DISCOVER YOUR STRENGTHS. He is a renowned speaker and regular

guest on American television. He lives in Los Angeles but was born in England and is a graduate

of Cambridge University.

Fault Lines: How Hidden Fractures Still Threaten the

World Economy

Winner of the FT Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year

Award 2010

Raghuram Rajan was one of a handful of economists who foresaw

the massive financial crisis that hit the world in 2008. In Fault

Lines, Rajan makes a case for looking beyond the short-sighted

blame-game that targets only greedy bankers. There are serious

flaws in the global economy, he writes, and an even more

debilitating crisis awaits us if those faults are not addressed right

now.

Rajan demonstrates how the individual choices ??? made by

bankers, government officials and ordinary homeowners ??? that collectively brought about the

economic meltdown were rational responses to a defective global financial order: specifically, a

mismatch between the incentives and the dangers involved in taking on risks. He traces the

deepening fault lines in a world overly dependent on the indebted American consumer to power

economic growth and stave off global downturns.

In Fault Lines, Rajan outlines the hard choices that all nations must make to ensure greater

stability and lasting prosperity. Importantly, he examines how the Indian development

experience differs from that of other fast-growing economies. Despite India???s recent

successes, he argues that the country must act decisively to maintain its people-oriented growth.

This unique development path, he contends, will be a compelling role model ??? a triumph of

rapid growth in a flourishing democracy.

About the Author Raghuram G. Rajan is the Eric J. Gleacher distinguished service professor of finance at the

University of Chicago???s Booth School of Business. He was the chief economist at the

International Monetary Fund from September 2003 until January 2007. He is an economic

advisor to the prime minister of India and has co-authored a book with Luigi Zingales entitled

Saving Capitalism from the Capitalists.

The Test of My Life from Cricket to Cancer and

Back

A personal account of Yuvraj Singh’s journey through cancer with the

2011 World Cup victory in the background‘

That day I cried like a baby not because I feared what cancer would do but

because I didn’t want the disease. I wanted my life to be normal, which it

could not be.’

For the first time Yuvraj Singh tells the real story behind the 2011 World Cup when on-the-field

triumph hid his increasingly puzzling health problems and worrying illnesses. In his debut book

The test of my life, he reveals how—plagued with insomnia, coughing fits that left him vomiting

blood, and an inability to eat—he made a deal with God. On the night before the 2011 ICC

Cricket World Cup final, Yuvraj prayed for the World Cup in return for anything God wanted. In

this book, he lays bare his fears, doubts, and the lows he experienced during chemotherapy—

when he lost his energy, his appetite, and his hair—and his battle to find the will to survive.

Poignant, personal, and moving—The test of my life—is about cancer and cricket; but more

importantly, it is about the human will to fight adversity and triumph despite all odds.

About the Author Yuvraj Singh is an Indian cricketer and a cancer survivor. He was born in Chandigarh in 1981.

He debuted for India in 2000 during the ICC Knock Out Trophy, still only nineteen. In 2011, he

emerged as Player of the Tournament in the ICC World Cup, which his team won. That same

year he was diagnosed with cancer. He returned to international cricket less than a year after his

diagnosis. This is his first book.

The Bankster

Bestselling author Ravi Subramanian, a master storyteller of

financial crime and winner of the Golden Quill Readers Choice

Award, returns with his most gripping thriller yet.

Bankers build their careers on trust, or so everyone thinks, till a series of

murders threaten to destroy the reputation that the Greater Boston Global
