Dear Parents and Guardians:

March Madness has arrived! For basketball fans, this means that teams at all levels of play are preparing to do well enough to earn the opportunity to compete in their competition brackets for the ultimate goal of winning a state or national title. In the middle school, March Madness takes on a different meaning. As a school, teams of staff and students continue to work hard to prepare for the final stretch of the school year with the ultimate goal that each

individual student gains at least one full year of academic growth in each of the state tested areas.

Our students participate in several assessments throughout the year so that we can monitor each student’s progress. Students participate in AIMSweb, Scholastic Reading Inventory and STAR math assessment. These assessments, in conjunction with their classroom performance assessments, allow for us to assess each child’s academic growth and when appropriate and necessary, provide appropriate interventions and support.

Our students also participate in state testing each year. Here at CFMS, we have worked hard to align our curriculum to the Common Core Standards for Mathematics, Language Arts, and Literacy in all subject areas. Again, this year our students will participate in the Wisconsin Forward exam, which will be administered later this spring. Additional detailed testing information can be found on page 13 of this newsletter.

Standardized assessments are our reality and have been in public schools for decades. Although the state test provides us collective feedback on areas of strength and areas of opportunity, our primary focus is on providing high quality education to all of our students at Chippewa Falls Middle School. That way, regardless of what test is put in front of us, our students will be ready. The reality of this helps reinforce the importance of our school focusing on student learning not chasing student test scores. This is exactly what our focus has been and will continue to be.

On March 9 and March 14 from 4-8 p.m., we are excited to invite families to participate in our spring parent/teacher conferences. The spring conferences are a perfect time for your student to share the growth and progress they have made toward their goals this year. You are invited to visit your child’s unified arts, music, and phy ed teachers as well. They too have important information to share about your child’s progress. We look forward to seeing you! Creative Engaged & Outstanding

Congratulations to the following students who earned the title of CEO by the unified arts department for their outstanding effort in the classroom this past month.

Mr. Larson

This month’s CEO of the Month from 6th Grade Exploring Agriculture is Mason Howard. Mason brings a positive attitude and an excellent work ethic to Exploring Agriculture. He is very organized and turns in his best work. He used a great analogy when defining the word byproduct – "leftovers" which helped the rest of the class with remembering the term. He is a true role model for the class, and sets a great example for his peers around him. Excellent work during this past rotation, Mason!

Mrs. Armitage

The CFMS Art Department would like to recognize Kolbe Solberg for his outstanding efforts in art. Kolbe is a self-motivated student who works hard and is always focused on the task-at-hand. His time and effort on his project in computer art far exceeded my expectations. Kolbe is respectful, hardworking, and is a great role model for other students. The art department is proud to name him as this month’s CEO! Great job Kolbe!

Mrs. Forster

Vaughn Smith is the CEO for the business department this month. He is focused and pays attention. He always raises his hand and provides a logical answer to questions the teacher asks. Vaughn also notices details and has picked up on things his peers usually don’t. It is a pleasure to have Vaughn in my class and I look forward to having him in the coming years. Good job Vaughn!

Mrs. Hahn

I have enjoyed having Eric Kragness in my class. He is always willing to participate in a class discussion or taking a guess and answering questions. One of the things that I truly appreciate about Eric is that he is willing to dig deeper and expand on his work. He is not afraid to jump in and try new things either.

Mr. Schradle

I would like to recognize Mia Gunderson as this month’s Tech Ed CEO award recipient. Mia is very dedicated to the success of her projects. She always takes the extra steps to challenge herself to improve. She takes a great deal of pride in making sure her work is complete and done the right way. Excellent work Mia!

Kari “Josefina” Zwiefelhofer is Señorita Wolner’s selection for February’s Spanish Student of the Month in the World Language Department. Josefina makes Spanish class a brighter place with her smile and positive attitude. This is evident in the way she works with others, tries challenging activities and volunteers to share her thoughts. Josefina has already learned so much in her time as a Spanish student! She often takes risks in learning to make her Spanish better. Josefina is a great leader in Spanish class! ¡Bien hecho, Josefina! Dakota “José” West is Señorita Wolner’s selection for February’s Spanish Student of the Month in the World Language Department. José is a kind and

consistent leader in Spanish class. He shows determination and commitment when he regularly turns in excellent work. José is very talented with his Spanish language skills. He can also often be seen including others in his group and explaining difficult information. In this way, José is a leader by example and is an exceptional Spanish student! ¡Buen trabajo, José! Noah “Carlos” Hanson is Señora Arendt’s selection for February’s Spanish Student of the Month in the World Language Department. Carlos always enters class with a smile on his face and is excited to interact in the target language. He always goes above and beyond with his activities and assessments. He has grown so much in his writing due to his effort each day and passion for learning. Carlos is well-liked by everyone in class due to his compassion and positive attitude. I look forward to seeing what Spanish will bring to his future! ¡Eres fenomenal, Carlos!

Alyssa “Isabel” Hysell is Señora Arendt’s selection for February’s Spanish Student of the Month in the World Language Department. Isabel constantly wants to expand her Spanish vocabulary by asking questions. She demonstrates a genuine concern for the well-being of her classmates and offers to help out when needed. Isabel will also be attending the World Language trip to Concordia Language Villages at the end of the month. I am excited to see her interact with the target language and culture. She is the definition of a true World Language student and I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for her Spanish abilities! ¡Excelente, Isabel! Lisa ‘Cécile’ Landwehr is Mademoiselle Hemauer’s selection for February’s French Student of the Month in the World Language Department. Cécile is an outstanding student in the French program. She is extremely motivated to learn the language and volunteers on a daily basis. She strives to hand in exceptional work and always attempts the exemplary component on formatives and summatives. Additionally, her work ethic is not only seen in the classroom. At the end of March, she will be participating in the Concordia Language Villages Camp, which will be a weekend immersion French camp in northern Minnesota. She is such a pleasure to have in French and she will continue to be successful in future French classes at Chi Hi. Incroyable, Cécile !

Riley ‘Napoléon’ Fauske is Mademoiselle Hemauer’s selection for February’s French Student of the Month in the World Language Department. Napoléon is the first student who uses French to greet his teacher every day when he enters the classroom. He is enthusiastic about learning and volunteers often during class activities. Napoléon also

Teacher Advisory (TA) and Just Act Right (JAR) lessons were developed after referring to school-wide behavior data. PBIS coaches meet weekly to evaluate the most recent data. Using this data, lessons are developed and explicitly taught to students. TA lessons are taught weekly during TA. The JAR lessons are week-long areas of focus. The JAR lessons are visibly posted by every staff in his/her environment. Our JAR theme for March is: Be Respectful to Adults and Peers

Use your manners o Say “Please”, “Thank you”, and “Excuse me” o Push in your chair o Clean up your workspace before you leave

Keep hands and feet to yourself Treat others how you would like to be treated Call people by their actual name or their nickname Think before you speak Listen when people are talking Give compliments Use appropriate language Use “I statements” if you are talking with someone that you are frustrated with Respect people’s learning environment by:

o Working on the task at hand o Working quietly o Reading your silent reading book or work on other homework if you’re done with a task early

During the month of February, students donated their pennies and other change to the Penny War for the Polar Plunge benefitting Special Olympics. Our three principals were in competition to see who would have to jump into the frigid waters of Lake Altoona. Their totals were...

Mr. Kunsman: – $47.82

Mrs. Kern: – $34.29

Mr. DesJarlais: + $29.16

Unfortunately, due to our snow day, we weren't able to determine a winner in time. In addition, the ice on Lake Altoona was not safe for the Plunge. Four CFMS students decided to raise money and jump into an ice cold pool, despite these circumstances.

Sean Martin raised $265.00

Sophia Bluemke raised $125.00

Isaiah Sanchez raised $89.00

Ayva Peterson raised $75.00

In total, our school raised over $600! Way to go!

Breakout Boxes provided challenges and fun for all who attended the Family Literacy Night. The parents were supportive with helping the students solve the clues to discover the necessary combinations to unlock the box. Students received a free book and math game giftbag to allow the whole family to play. Mr. Logslett, Mrs. Schaller, and Mrs. Ternberg enjoyed planning the activity and seeing great cooperative learning while groups worked through the puzzles to solve the clues. It was fun to see everyone working together. Thank you Mrs. Kern for providing the pizza and participating in the Breakout activity. When

asked what did parents enjoy most, a response was, “The activity and students working together to achieve a goal.” And, from the student surveys “It was fun and challenging.”

For our Valentine's Day community service project, we decorated and donated 300 cookies to the Meals and Wheels program. Every person who gets a meal delivered to them received one of our cookies! We hope they had a great Valentine's Day--The STAR Group

The Weekend Kid’s Meals Program continues! The purpose of the program, offered through Feed My People Food Bank, is to provide food for your child during the weekend when school breakfast and lunch are not available.

There are no income guidelines or requirements. Anyone is welcome to participate in this program. The food is at NO COST to you or your child. If you choose to enroll, your child will receive a plastic bag each Friday with enough food for breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Sunday, plus snacks and fresh fruit. The meals have not been screened for various allergies;

therefore, parents are responsible for determining if this program meets their student’s dietary and health needs. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact Derrick Kunsman, Assistant Principal at [email protected] or 715.726.2400, ext. 1144.

POISON PREVENTION AND TREATMENT TIPS

March 19 – 25 is Poison Prevention Week. In 2014, poison control centers provided assistance for nearly 2.2 human poison exposures-that equals out to be one poison exposure reported to U.S. poison control centers every 15 seconds! The majority of poisonings occur in the home and are accidental. Among children, these things often cause poisonings:

Medicines

Pain killers

Household cleaners

Hydrocarbons (such as lamp oil, kerosene, gasoline, lighter fluid)

Plants

While children younger than 6 years old comprise a large percentage of cases, poisoning can affect all age groups-infant to seniors.

“We are the Mighty Cardinals”

Ways to Prevent Accidental Poisoning

Store medicine, cleaners, paints/varnishes and pesticides in their original packaging in locked cabinets or containers, out of sight and reach of children

Install a safety latch-that locks when you close the door on child-accessible cabinets containing harmful products

Purchase and keep all medicines in containers with safety caps. Discard unused medication

Check the label each time you give a child medicine to ensure proper dosage

Never tell a child that medicine tastes like candy

Never place poisonous products in food or drink containers

Keep coal, wood, or kerosene stoves in safe working order.

Maintain working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

Treatment If your child is unconscious, not breathing or having seizures due to poison contact or ingestion, call 911. If your child has come in contact with poison, and has mild or no symptoms, call your poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.

Immediate Treatment Tips

Swallowed Poison: Remove item from the child and have child spit out any remaining substance. Do not make your child vomit! Skin Poison: Remove the child’s clothes and rinse the skin with lukewarm water for at least 15 minutes Eye Poison: Flush the child’s eye by holding the eyelid open and pouring a steady stream of room temperature water into the inner corner Poisonous Fumes: Take the child outside or into fresh air immediately. If child has stopped breathing, start CPR and do not stop until the child breathes or help arrives

March is National Nutrition Month!

National Nutrition Month is a campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. It focuses on making good food choices and creating healthy eating and physical activity habits. This year, the theme for National Nutrition Month is, “Put Your Best Fork Forward”. A slogan reminding us that we each have the tools to make better food choices. Small changes can add up to BIG results. A great tool for families to use when planning and serving meals is MyPlate. MyPlate makes it easy to serve up nutritious and balanced meals to your family. Fruits

o Focus on whole fruits, like oranges, strawberries, bananas

and apples rather than juice, or fruit snacks.

o Whole fruits provide more fiber and nutrients and can keep

us feeling fuller, longer.

Grains

o Always choose whole grain sources when you can.

Naturally whole grain sources include oatmeal, brown rice

and popcorn. For other foods like cereal, bread, tortillas

and pasta, look at the label. The ingredients list should have whole grain or whole wheat as the first ingredient.

o Grains provide us with B vitamins that give us energy to make it through our day. Whole grains give us fiber and

that keeps us feeling fuller longer.

Protein

o Focus on lean proteins like chicken, turkey, venison, lean beef, seafood and pork tenderloin. Remember there are

non-meat protein sources like eggs, dairy, beans, nuts and peanut butter. Try to vary your protein sources

throughout the week.

o Protein helps to support all kinds of body functions and is used to build muscle and keep us strong.

CFMS • Principal Sue Kern • Grade 8/Grade 7 Trek Assistant Principal Jerim DesJarlais • Grade 6/7 Endeavor-Rising Stars Assistant Principal Derrick Kunsman

“Tons of opportunities, more things to love” 9

Vegetables

o Try to get a mix of starchy and non-starchy vegetables throughout the week. Starchy vegetables include potatoes,

corn, peas and squash. Non-starchy vegetables are typically the crunchy vegetables. Foods that fit into this

category include, lettuce, green peppers, tomatoes, carrots, green beans, etc…

o Vegetables have a variety of vitamins and minerals, which keeps our bodies in the best shape it can be. They also

contain fiber and are low in calories, which helps to promote weight loss.

Dairy

o Low-fat or fat-free sources of dairy are best. This includes foods like low-fat (1%) or fat-free (skim) milk and low-fat

cheeses (part skim string cheese). Snacks are an easy way to get in an extra serving of dairy.

o Dairy foods provide us with calcium and vitamin D, which helps keep our bones strong, but also our muscles and

nerves. Vitamin D helps keep our immune system working well.

Meal examples that fit into MyPlate are below.

Educational Excellence

The CFMS administrative team participated in the “National Shadow A Student

Challenge” in early February. The team had the opportunity to return to the middle school as a student for an entire day. One student from each grade level was chosen to buddy up with an administrator and share a day in their shoes. The administrative team joined 1662 other school leaders across the 50 states in this challenge.

The shadow day challenge was a fun, illuminating, and supportive day-long adventure that allowed the administrative team to live a day in the life of our students’ daily reality and use the day’s experience to discuss opportunities for us to improve

upon the daily routines of our students. Here are some of the administrators’ “take aways”....

Students and staff were very helpful and kind to each other

Teachers were very accommodating to help students with organizational struggles

It felt lonely while waiting to come inside before school

“We are the Mighty Cardinals”

Felt nervous keeping my phone in the locker during the day

Appreciated being prompted to move and interact with others

I was nervous to ask questions, and I’m grown

I was nervous to hold up my answers on the dry erase boards because I didn’t want to be judged

I had a hard time transitioning from class to class. I would still be thinking about some subjects when class would start and needed a minute to catch up to what was going on in the new class

We have very intelligent teachers

We have a lot of really great kids

Saying “hi” means something

Smiling means something

The English department is proud to announce that Shelby Loebertman, an eighth grade student on the Starfish Team, participated in the regional spelling bee held on February 15 at Thorp Elementary School. Shelby made it to the fourth round (this photo was taken during the fourth round), which put her in the top 10! Thank you for your fine representation of CFMS, Shelby!

Mrs. Parker's 8th grade Kidz Junction Class did a great job teaching educational lessons to the BB4C kids at the YMCA learning center. They had the opportunity to participate and experience being "teachers" for the day.

What a great school-to-work experience had by all :)

Way to go Mrs. Parker's Unified Arts Class for donating hygiene products to abused victims and survivors of domestic violence and assault to the Family Support Center in Chippewa Falls :) Your community service work will help so many!

6th Grade: Sixth grade reading students have just finished a biography/autobiography unit. They will be taking the Unit 3 assessment next week. Please remember that we encourage students to make reading a habit. It is expected that they read a book of their choice at least five nights each week.

7th Grade: Seventh grade reading students have started reading Devil’s Arithmetic, their Holocaust novel. This unit is a cross-curricular unit and related topics will be discussed in English and Social Studies. Tim Scott will come in on March 16, as a Holocaust guest speaker.

6th Grade: Sixth graders have wrapped up their work with Expressions and have been learning about Ratios and Rates (6.RP.3b & 3c). Students are finding unit rates and learning to understand percentage as a rate per 100. They will solve real-life problems involving rates and percentages. Once that has been completed, we will move on to equations and students will solve real-world problems that involve equations. They will learn to use tables, graphs, and equations to show different views of the same mathematical relationship. (6.EE.7, 6.EE.9)

7th Grade: This month, students will be focusing more on ratios and proportional relationships. Students already learned different ways to represent proportional relationships through tables, graphs, and equations. They will use this knowledge to help them solve a wide variety of percent problems, including those involving discounts, interest, taxes, tips, and percent increase or decrease. After this unit, students will be moving onto geometry concepts involving angle relationships, surface area and volume of 3-D figures.

8th Grade: Pre-Algebra students are finishing up our Bivariate Data unit. In the course of this unit we have studied relationships between different 2-variable data sets, both numerical and categorical. Our treatment of numerical data was a natural extension of our Linear Functions Unit. Students have been learning how to calculate different statistical measures and we’ve been working on answering questions using statistics. We’ll wrap up the Bivariate Data Unit before spring break and will introduce the concepts that will be learned in the next unit: Systems of Equations. Many of the concepts learned in the Linear Functions and Bivariate Data Units will be applied in the Systems of Equations Unit. The Systems of Equations Unit is one of our most challenging units of the year, so encourage your student to ask questions and seek out help if the need it! In Algebra we will be wrapping up the Exponential Functions Unit and transitioning to the Solving Quadratic Equations Unit. The Solving Quadratics Unit is among the most challenging of the year so make sure that your student is keeping up and getting help when needed.

Parent Corner

At the Chippewa Falls Area Unified School District, we are committed to being an excellent school district for our students, families, and community. To help guide our service, we gather feedback from our partners to determine where we are strong and where we can continue to improve. The Parent Satisfaction Survey allows parents to provide input on their child’s school. We would like to personally invite every parent and guardian in our district to give us feedback using the following link: Parent Satisfaction Survey. Please complete the survey for each school where you currently have a child attending. The Parent Satisfaction Survey will be open from March 1 - March 31.

The information from the survey will be used by building principals and staff to plan actions for their individual buildings. You may recall hearing about last spring’s results in our fall school newsletters. Your feedback is so important to this process. Thank you!

Planning and coordination of a new and improved bell schedule for the 2017-18 school year for Chippewa Falls Middle School have been underway since August! The new bell schedule, shown below, will be better for our students in many ways including:

Time at the start of the day for all students to gather supplies, organize for the day, and listen to the announcements before their first class.

Later lunch time for 8th grade students, 11:34 rather than 10:45.

6th grade students will eat in a smaller section with fewer students to help with transition.

6th grade students core academic time will be completed at 1:45 rather than 3:45.

Teacher advisory at the end of the day so all students will have had all of their academic classes at that point with an opportunity to get assistance on homework assignments.

Students who participate in extracurricular activities that require early release for travel will not miss academic class time.

Our students in grades 6-8 will be participating in the Wisconsin Forward state assessment during the spring testing window that occurs in April and May of this school year. The Wisconsin Forward assessment measures the knowledge and skills your student(s) should have acquired by the time they reach each grade level. Their performance on the assessment will not affect any of their current grades. Please encourage your son or daughter to take the test seriously and do the best they can. The results of these tests will be used to help school staff make determinations or placement in classes to best support your child(ren).

Our school is scheduled to take the Wisconsin Forward Assessment during that assessment window and we will test our students by grade level teams. A messenger through IC will be sent to you with the specific dates and times that your child will be testing with their Teacher Advisory class as we move closer to the testing window. Please check your email to ensure you receive the message!

The Wisconsin Forward assessment tests students in the areas of English-Language Arts and mathematics in grades 6-8 and our 8th grade students will be assessed in the areas of social studies and science as well. One or more subtests may be administered daily during the identified timeframe and it is very important that your son or daughter be in school during this time. Students not in school on the scheduled testing days will be scheduled for make-up tests at a later time.

We ask that you prioritize your child attending on their testing days, assure that they get plenty of rest, and have a nutritional breakfast so

they are in a good state of mind for this important assessment. Please note that breakfast is available for all students from 8:05-8:25. The cost is $.85 or free for those who qualify.

“Tons of opportunities, more things to love” 15

On February 6 and 7, the middle school staff and students welcomed our current 5th grade friends who, in just about seven short months, will be our awesome sixth graders. Students and parents had an opportunity to learn about life at the middle school, enjoy performances from our music ensembles, and take a self-guided tour of the building as the transition to middle school begins. 89.5% of the families that took the follow-up survey indicated that the information received that evening helped them gain an understanding of what 6th grade will be like for their student. We are pleased that the night was valuable to those in attendance. We are very excited to have these future Cardinals join our middle school family!

Please remind your student to check the Lost and Found areas on a regular basis for lost items. He/she can check in the laundry room down in the phy-ed area AND the front office. That lost item you or your student has been looking for may be there!

After logging into your portal account, click onto the tab at the top: “Switch Students”. In doing so, you will see a dropdown of all students for whom you are guardian. By selecting their name, you will get a new screen showing the index of information available to you. Based on the grade level of your student, access to the following information may be available on the Parent Portal:

The Schedule will give you a grid of your student’s classes Attendance offers calendars with specific attendance information Reports contains a list of printable reports for grades, missing assignments, schedules, and assessments

including AIMS testing results Fees tab will show any monetary amount due The Calendar will notate any significant date for which your student has an assignment due or test scheduled Messages lists all school notices for each of your children’s schools Under User Account, you will be able to change your password, check the access log, and change the way we

contact you – including a section for checking/changing your email address

If you wish to view specific assignments, the dates they are due, or points earned on an assignment, go to “Schedule” – then click onto the class name. Scroll down to the grids. The grids are set up in the order of oldest first – you may have to scroll down to locate the most current.

HOW TO CREATE YOUR PARENT PORTAL ACCOUNT If you have not yet created a parent portal account, feel free to call or email your child’s school and request information. We will email you instructions and a 32-character code required to activate your account.

You will then select a personal username and password. Your parent portal may be accessed through our website at http://cfsd.chipfalls.k12.wi.us and clicking on the Infinite Campus logo at the top of the screen. Clicking onto Infinite Campus Portal will open the login screen for you. If you have further questions, feel free to call the school district’s help desk at 715.726.2413.

Mobile Device Portal Setup Campus Mobile Portal will give you real time information on your son or daughter enrolled in the Chippewa Falls Area Unified School District. You will get access and notification sent to you regarding school lunch accounts, assignments, attendance, grades and schedule changes. The school district ID for this download is LXNWQL. Breakfast and lunch menus for all schools are posted monthly at http://cfsd.chipfalls.k12.wi.us//foodServices.cfm.

Breakfast is available at all schools. The cost of breakfast at the Middle School is $0.85. Additional items can be purchased and each item will be charged individually.

Lunch price is $2.50 per meal, which includes one milk. Milk can be purchased separately for $0.35. If you send a lunch from home, you may want to consider sending a beverage if you do not want to incur a milk charge on your account. Additional items can be purchased individually. Students on free or reduced meals will also be charged for items purchased in addition to the meal.

Limiting Meal Purchases/Expense: At the middle and high school levels, students are allowed to purchase additional items along with their traditional lunch and/or breakfast meal. Restrictions can be placed on an individual student’s account to prohibit excessive a la carte purchases. It does not mean the student cannot have it, but rather they must provide cash at the time of purchase. Additionally, a dollar limit can be set per student.

Free and Reduced Price School Meals: All students on free or reduced meals are entitled to ONE breakfast and ONE lunch per day. Milk only or extra items are charged at full price. Meal applications are accepted any time throughout the school year. Thus, if your financial situation changes, please complete an online application on the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. Paper applications are also available in the front office at the middle school and at the Administration Office. Please direct all meal account inquiries/questions to Peg at 715.726.2581.

Parents/guardians are required to notify the school when their child is absent from school. The attendance line is for reporting absences AND requesting passes to leave or return from an appointment.

If you need a pass for your child to leave school for an appointment, please leave a detailed message on the attendance line (#1 on the automated menu) as soon as possible to ensure a pass is issued and delivered to your student in a timely manner. Phy ed classes present a challenge for last minute calls for appointments. Clearly state the name of the child, the time to be released or the return time if applicable and the reason they will be gone. Students can pick up their passes to leave from the respective grade level office or they will be delivered to the student in their classroom.

If your child has an appointment, have them bring the appointment slip/medical note from the appointment, which will help us clearly document the absence in attendance.

If we do not receive a phone call from a parent/guardian for a child who is absent from school, an electronic message will be sent home after 4:00 p.m. on the day of the absence.
