Once you complete the above steps, you will receive your learner’s permit and will be able to begin practicing towards obtaining your driver’s license.

However, since you are still a minor your learner’s permit will have some restrictions until you obtain your driver’s license. Be sure to read below what these restrictions will be to prevent any issues while you practice driving.

Learner’s Permit Restrictions

During the time you hold your learner’s permit, you will not be allowed to carry any passengers in your vehicle, unless they are a licensed driving instructor who is providing you with instructions, or a licensed driver who is at least 20 years old and has held his or her license for four years without any suspensions during that time. Your parent/guardian is also allowed to accompany you during the time you are in a vehicle with an instructor.

If you have gone through the steps of getting your learner’s permit in Connecticut, then you are now only one-step closer to obtaining your driver’s license. The next step is to practice as much as possible driving before applying for your license. All that is required now is that you follow the steps below that best fit your situation to officially hold that brand new license.

Driving Test Taking a driving test is necessary in order for the DMV to determine your driving skills level. The first part of the exam, which includes a safety check, will show the examiner that you have an acceptable level of skill regarding your vehicle. When you go to take your driving test, you are required to provide a vehicle that is both insured, and passes the safety requirements. Continue to read the points below to understand better what will happen during your test from start to finish.

To begin, the examiner will judge and grade you based on your ability to obey instructions and perform the tasks, such as:

The road test will not be very long and will not require that you know anything beyond the standard knowledge and skill on how to operate a vehicle. In the case that you fail the road test, you must wait 14 days to retake the test and pay the $40 fee again.

You must make an appointment online before visiting the DMV to take your test.

Adult Drivers: First LicenseIf you are 18 years old or older, have never had a license and are now looking to obtaining one, the very first thing you need to do is obtain an adult learner’s permit. If you have not done this yet, then please do so before applying to obtain your driver’s license.

Unless you are an active military personnel, have held a driver’s license previously, or have held a teen learner’s permit previously for more than 90 days that expired when you turned 18 years old.

If you have never had a license, you will be required to complete an eight-hour Safe Driving Practices course before you can apply for your driver’s license or take the road test. This can be taken either through a commercial driving school or high school driving program. If you previously had a driver’s license that expired two or more years ago, you will not be required to complete an eight hour Safe Driving Practices course.

When your driver’s license expires, it no longer acts as a valid form of identification. You cannot legally drive with an expired driver’s license and you will be issued a ticket if stopped by law enforcement. Before you renew your license, it is best that you thoroughly comprehend the process so that you can avoid any error or issues that may occur.

RenewingYour License

Page 16

Page 17: Connecticut Driver’s License Guide · instructor accompany you, either a licensed driving instructor or a driver who is a at least 20 years old or older, that has held their driver’s

A Connecticut driver’s license expires every six years, unless you are 65 years or older and request for an ID card that expires every two years instead. You are able to renew your driver’s license up to 120 days, roughly four months, before your driver’s license expiration date.

In Connecticut, you are able to choose between two kinds of driver’s license, either a regular or a verified driver’s license. The difference is very simple. The verified driver’s license provides security for your identity by having you prove your identity, legal status in the United States, and residency in Connecticut. Therefore, a verified driver’s license shows any authority or person who checks your driver’s license that your identity has been confirmed by the DMV office.

You can still drive legally with a regular renewed license. The only difference is the verification, which will allow you

to go through places such as airports, federal buildings and even commercial transactions without extra screening.

If you choose to have your driver’s license renewed without having your identity verified, you will have to take the following steps:

Visit the DMV office or AAA office.

Hand over your driver’s license.

Fill out the renewal application form that will be sent to you by mail.

The difference is the Real ID card provides security for your identity by having you prove your identity, legal status in the United States, and residency in Connecticut. Therefore, a verified driver’s license shows any authority or person who checks your ID card that your identity has been confirmed by the DMV office.

The only difference is that the non-verified ID card will be stamped as “Not for Federal Identification”, while the verification, which will allow you to go through places such as airports, federal buildings and even commercial transactions without extra screening.

If you wish to obtain a renewed ID card that is not verified, you only have to provide the following documents:

Visit the DMV or AAA office.

The most important thing before you begin driving any vehicle is that both you and the vehicle are well prepared for any trip you make. This means checking and making any changes to your vehicle or your behavior to make sure that you are able to drive safely at all times.

Emergency Kit One of the essentials to safe driving is having a basic emergency kit available in your vehicle at all times. This kit should include basic items such as water, extra batteries, rope, First Aid kit, matches, a whistle, etc. During winter months, it is also important to carry items such as blankets, non-perishable foods, extra gloves and socks, and a shovel.

Vehicle Safety Tips

Page 32

Winter Driving One of the most dangerous times to drive is during the winter, especially if you live in an area that snows. Therefore, it is best to consider these tips to drive safely during the winter.

Don’t Rush!

Roads are often covered in snow and ice after it snows, so instead of driving fast and risking an accident in your rush to get to your destination try leaving a few minutes earlier than usual. This will allow you to drive slower and help to avoid rushing other drivers by not tailgating them if they are going slower.

Don’t Panic If You Skid or Slip

In the case that your vehicle does ski or slip while driving make sure you do not panic and slam down on your brakes. Instead, all you need to do is apply slow and even pressure on your brakes until you stop. This will prevent you from spinning further out of control.

Check Your Vehicle

Before you even leave your house, make sure your vehicle’s controls, brakes, tank, tires, antifreeze, exhaust, etc. are all working properly. It is also important that you remove all ice and snow from your car before you begin driving; this prevents the snow from blocking your view while you drive.

Page 33

Drinking And Driving Every year thousands are killed because of drinking and driving. This is something that is very easily prevented, it only requires that you plan ahead of time by taking these steps.

Even before you begin drinking, you should arrange for someone else to be the designated driver. In the case that they also become intoxicated, it is important that you arrange to take a taxi. Never allow someone drunk to drive, instead take away his or her keys and call for alternative transportation.

If you see someone who you suspect is drunk, and they exhibit signs of intoxication while driving such as making wide turns, weaving, swerving, braking erratically, turning abruptly, etc. call 911 and contact authorities immediately. Also, make sure to avoid them on the road to ensure your own safety.

Using Your PhoneDriving while using your cellphone is one of the most dangerous things you can do because during those few seconds your attention is diverted to your phone, a major accident could occur. So, make sure you do not text, use of the Internet on your phone, or receive calls while you drive to prevent accidents as best as possible.

Things to AvoidDriving is not always a relaxing experience. There are certain actions that can be both an annoyance and dangerous to you while on the road driving. These things are often avoidable if you make sure to take the necessary steps towards preventing them, as well as stopping them after you discover them to be occurring.

Car Accidents

The best way to avoid car accidents is to ensure that your vehicle is safe to drive and will not cause you any problems. To do this you only need to regularly check that your brakes are functioning properly, your tires are inflated

Page 34

Page 35: Connecticut Driver’s License Guide · instructor accompany you, either a licensed driving instructor or a driver who is a at least 20 years old or older, that has held their driver’s

and not worn out, and that the steering and suspensions are checked by a mechanic and will not fail while you drive, especially at high speeds.

Wasting Gas

As the price of gas goes up you may begin to start looking for ways to save on those expensive trips to the pump. Well, saving on gas is something that is possible if you take a few steps towards ensuring that you waste less gas.

You can start saving gas by not using air conditioning, not leaving your engine running and not speeding above 60 mph. These things are preventable and not necessary for you to drive, therefore you can quickly reduce the amount of gas you waste.

Another way to save on gas is to make sure that your vehicle is functioning properly, you can do this by checking that your tires are properly inflated, your engine is well tuned, and check that your octane level is the correct amount to your vehicle’s needs.

Aggressive Driving

Aggressive driving and drivers are both things that should be avoided to prevent any on-road aggression or accidents. Aggressive driving is categorized as exhibiting behaviors such as aggressive tailgating, verbal or physically harassing another driver, preventing another driver from merging or passing.

However, if you are an aggressive driver, you are putting others at risk every time you do any of the above behaviors. If you encounter a frustrating situation on the road, instead of becoming aggressive, take a moment to breathe and relax before moving on.
