While you drive with your permit, you must have a qualified instructor accompany you, either a licensed driving instructor or a driver who is a at least 20 years old or older, that has held their driver’s license for at least four years without any suspensions during that time.

Vision Exam

Getting your vision checked before you obtain your learner’s permit or driver’s license is essential to ensure that you are physically capable of driving. The exam will require that you have a minimum vision of 20/40. If you fail your vision exam, you will be required to get corrective lenses. It will state on your license that you must wear corrective lenses to drive.

Written Exam

When it comes to obtaining your learner’s permit, you will need to take a written exam first before receiving your permit. At first, it may seem intimidating to take the exam, but once you understand how the process goes, it will be less frightening to you.

In order to prepare for the written exam have to review all information regarding driver safety, traffic laws and all Connecticut laws. You must answer 20 questions out of the 25 total questions correct in order to pass the test. All the information you will need to study to prepare for the test can be found in the Connecticut Driver’s Manual, which you can read here.

In the case that you fail the written test, can retake it, but will be required to wait a week to do so and you will be required to pay the exam fee of $40 again.

Teen DriversIf you are a teenager, getting your driver’s license can be an important rite of passage. This guide will help you to complete the process conveniently. The guide will outline and help you to better understand each procedure you must complete. As a new driver, it is important that you carefully read each step and fully understand how everything operates. This is to ensure that you avoid any complications, but also to be sure that you are well prepared to take on your responsibilities on the road.

Step 1: Learner’s Permit

In order to begin your journey of attaining your license as a teen, you must first obtain your driver’s permit. Your written test result will be valid for two years after you take it, which means that you will have two years to obtain your driver’s license before your written test results expire. If you take longer than two years, you have to retake and pass the written test.

Once you complete the above steps, you will receive your learner’s permit and will be able to begin practicing towards obtaining your driver’s license.

However, since you are still a minor your learner’s permit will have some restrictions until you obtain your driver’s license. Be sure to read below what these restrictions will be to prevent any issues while you practice driving.

Learner’s Permit Restrictions

During the time you hold your learner’s permit, you will not be allowed to carry any passengers in your vehicle, unless they are a licensed driving instructor who is providing you with instructions, or a licensed driver who is at least 20 years old and has held his or her license for four years without any suspensions during that time. Your parent/guardian is also allowed to accompany you during the time you are in a vehicle with an instructor.

Step 2: Driver’s Education

The second step you must take after you obtain your learner’s permit, in order to obtain your driver’s license, is to obtain your driver’s education certificate, which ensures to the DMV office that you have basic driving knowledge and skills to be able to take the written test, as well as to begin practicing driving behind the wheel. In order to do this, you will have to obtain a CS-1 Driver Education Certificate, which you can obtain by completing the following courses:

Licensed Driving School:

• 30 hours of classroom training

If you complete these requirements, either through a commercial driving school or high school driver’s education

program, you will become eligible to apply to take your road test after holding your learner’s permit for 120 days. However, if you complete the requirements through the home training option, you have to hold onto your permit 180 days before you can apply to take the road test.

Step 3: Driver’s License

Now that the time has come for you to obtain your driver’s license, you need to make sure you fulfill the necessary criteria before you take your road test. These requirements mainly address the permit and practice time behind the wheel you must have had before applying.

If you are teen who has recently moved to Connecticut, then you will need to obtain your driver’s license within 30 days of becoming a new resident.

If you do not hold an out of state learner’s permit or driver’s license, you must start the process as any other Connecticut from the beginning. However, if you already hold an out of state permit or driver’s license, you will need to fulfill these requirements first before you can obtain your license. Seatbelt Restrictions

Until you turn 18 years old, you may only carry as many passengers as the number of seatbelts in your vehicle.

Once you turn 18 years old you will be able to obtain your adult driver’s license and will no longer have the above restrictions on your driver’s license, though you will still be held responsible to drive safely and abide by all Connecticut laws on the road.

Passengers Restrictions

First six months:

• A licensed driving instructor

• An instructor who is at least 20 years old and has held their driver’s license for at least four years without any suspensions during that time.

Second six months:

Curfew Restrictions

Until you turn 18 years old, you cannot drive during the hours of 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. unless it is due to the following:

Curfew and passenger restrictions do not apply to those who are active members of a volunteer ambulance or fire company or department, and are responding to an emergency.

You will have to wait approximately 90 days after obtaining your learner’s permit before you can apply for your driver’s license. Unless you are an active military personnel, have held a driver’s license previously, or have held a teen learner’s permit previously for more than 90 days that expired when you turned 18 years old.

If you have never had a license, you will be required to complete an eight-hour Safe Driving Practices course before you can apply for your driver’s license or take the road test. This can be taken either through a commercial driving school or high school driving program. If you previously had a driver’s license that expired two or more years ago, you will not be required to complete an eight hour Safe Driving Practices course.

In the case that your out of state license has been expired for longer than two years, you must obtain an adult learner’s permit and take an eight-hour Safe Driving Practices course at a licensed driving school in Connecticut before you can apply to take your road test.

You will not be required to obtain a Connecticut driver’s license if you are a full-time student with permanent out of state residency. However, when you are no longer a full time student, you have to obtain a driver’s license within 30 days of changing your status.

Make sure you verify your address on your documents or temporary license/ID before you leave the DMV, and if it is incorrect notify a DMV representative immediately before you leave.

Tip:

When your driver’s license expires, it no longer acts as a valid form of identification. You cannot legally drive with an expired driver’s license and you will be issued a ticket if stopped by law enforcement. Before you renew your license, it is best that you thoroughly comprehend the process so that you can avoid any error or issues that may occur.

RenewingYour License

A Connecticut driver’s license expires every six years, unless you are 65 years or older and request for an ID card that expires every two years instead. You are able to renew your driver’s license up to 120 days, roughly four months, before your driver’s license expiration date.

In Connecticut, you are able to choose between two kinds of driver’s license, either a regular or a verified driver’s license. The difference is very simple. The verified driver’s license provides security for your identity by having you prove your identity, legal status in the United States, and residency in Connecticut. Changing Your Name Making the decision to change your name is not only a big personal decision. Changing Your Address or Organ/Tissue Donor StatusIn the case that you may have recently moved to a new address, it is essential that you update the address or organ/tissue donor status on your driver’s license. All you must do is, follow the steps below that outline the process.

If you do move addresses, you must notify the DMV office of the change in address within 48 hours.

However, you will be required to wait one business day to pay the fee through the phone after faxing or emailing your form. The centralized processing unit is open from Monday to Friday, during the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 3p.m.

The DMV and AAA offices accept payments in cash, money orders, personal checks and bank checks payable to the DMV. As well as, MasterCard, Visa, Discover and most debit cards with a MasterCard or Visa logo.

In order to qualify to reinstate your license, you will have to have completed all of the required time for your restraining order. The DMV department will only reinstate your driver’s license if you complete all of the necessary requirements to remove any restraining orders from it.

ReinstatingYour License

There are many reasons you might have a suspended driver’s license, which means there are multiple ways to reinstate your driver’s license, depending on the situation.

If you need any information or clarification regarding your suspended license or under what condition it falls under, you will have to contact the DMV by either mail, phone or email.

Once you receive your suspension notice, you will have to take the following steps to begin the process to reinstating your driver’s license:

Fill out all necessary documents and pay all fees stated in the suspension notice a minimum of two weeks before your stated eligibility date.

• If you pay or money order it should be payable to the DMV

Temporary Licenses One ray of light in your situation though is the fact that Connecticut may allow you to obtain a temporary work or education license for you to use during the time your driver’s license is suspended. This is not absolutely guaranteed though, and depends on your suspension case individually.

However, whether or not you are approved for your temporary license depends on certain factors. You will have to meet the following standards in order to possibly be approved for a temporary work/education license:
