Feedback from EMUR work stream participants
GSMA survey was ran in March 2012 asking work stream participants
to prioritise GSMA activities they’d like to see supported in 2012/13
© GSM Association 2011
More focus on showcasing mobile
“Demonstrate through pilots with utilities what close Telco/Utility
cooperation can bring to smart grid”
“More showcases of existing solutions - deployed projects
(showing ROI)”
“Promotion of mobile technologies among utilities and key
influencers, particularly around connectivity for smart meters”
GSMA survey asked EMUR work stream participants what GSMA
should have done more in 2011/12:

What is a Smart City?
Smart
City?
A city in which citizens and services
providers have access to enhanced
information flow;
A city which combines disparate data sets
to offer productivity insights and
enhancement to its citizens and service
providers;
A city which maximises the economies of
scope and scale across its multiple
infrastructure layers through a common
service delivery platform;
A city which uses innovative technology
and innovation to strive to go beyond
economic targets, to deliver sustainable,
quality of life improvements for its citizens, its
industry and the local environment.

Universe of Smart City services
Smart Cities tend to have
different regional focus:
North America: focus
on smart grids; cherry-
picking low-hanging
fruit (federal funding)
Europe: regeneration
and sustainability
Asia-Pacific: dealing
with rapid urbanisation
and e-government
Latin America:
transportation

Smart City Service Tracker: Initial Findings
Mobility can be a differentiator for a
Smart City.
Of 114 smart cities deployed or
planned globally, 33 cities have
mobile-based services
Half of all projects involve the rollout
of municipal infrastructure for a mix of
applications. Other projects include
ITS, EV charging, smart grids, m-
payment/ticketing
Over half of smart cities without
mobile involvement are at
design/planning, or early deployment
stages.

Innovation in Smart City Services
Transportation: Multi-modal traffic
– Increasing electrification- building interrelation between energy
and transport
– Deploying intelligent transport systems
– Integrated planning and management
Smart energy:
– Integrated planning and management
- Building connection with transport
From public-private partnerships (3P) to 4P by adding people to the
mix: e.g. crowd-sourcing real-time mobility services
