WHO ARE CTE PATHWAYS COUNSELORS?

Hired on SB1070 Grant to…

• Help CTE high school students make a smooth transition to CTE

Programs at MSJC

• Increase the number of CTE students pursuing pathways in CTE

programs

• Support teachers and students in high schools with articulation and

tracking and receiving credit

• Provide CTE Pathways information to teachers and students and support

and help implement creative ideas to tryout with students to support

career development

WHO ARE CTE PATHWAYS COUNSELORS?

• All in 23.5 hours a week

• There were two…then there was one

• Divided the district in two regions:

• Temecula, Murrieta, Lake Elsinore, Perris, Menifee,

Moreno Valley (16 high schools)

• Hemet, San Jacinto, Banning, Beaumont (7 high schools)

GRANT | POSITION: GOALS | OBJECTIVES

• Assist students with MSJC Application (FALL)• Students need MSJC ID to start CATEMA account to receive credit for

articulated course(s)

• Assist teachers and students setting up CATEMA accounts (FALL)• CATEMA needs to be set up each year

• Log-in is the same but classes teaching and taking need to be entered each

year

• Work with teachers to identify students who will go to MSJC and

assist those students with orientation, assessment and educational plan

(SPRING)

GOAL: Help students move up in the registration food chain

prepare for a career in the industry

TAKE AWAYS

• Hours for CTE Pathways Counselor really average 25-30 hours a week, especially

during peak months (Oct, Nov; Feb, April, May)

• Start hours can be as early as 6:30 am with high school start times, commute time

and traffic at some schools

• Teacher and district meetings in the afternoon

• More robust and informational presentations since given by a counselor

• Relationship building with students is helping them think and possibly change

their mind to attend and start at community college/MSJC

CHALLENGES

• Difference between freshman taking articulated class and juniors/seniors

• SSN for application is a challenge everywhere; MSJC Application is very long for

high school students to complete and lots of family information that they may

have to guess on

• CTE Teachers are not getting the support they need from High School Counselors

in getting students in their classes

• Eagle Days wanted by all high schools

• Even though students are enrolled in CTE class, not many are planning to pursue

that CTE path at the college level

WORKED WELL

• Developing relationships with High School Teachers is helping them feel

supported and connected to MSJC

• Some students seem interested in the process and glad someone from MSJC was

there to talk about getting their credits and how to complete the application

• Students responded well to career conversations, what can I do with a major in,

salary information, CTE games/Q&A…and candy
