Coming soon - a great book launch for everyone with

an interest in Queensland history! Keeping the Peace

Vol II, a collection of police memoirs edited by local

author Laurie Pointing, will be launched at Gympie

Library on Thursday 26 March at 10am at the Gympie

Library.

Laurie Pointing started his working life as a station

hand on a western cattle property before joining the

Queensland Police Service in 1958 and rising to the

rank of Assistant Commissioner.

Following a police career spanning almost 35 years, and with three successful books

already to his credit, Laurie has now used his wealth of knowledge and experience to

bring together a second collection of personal stories from Queensland Police

Officers. The personal recollections in “Keeping The Peace” bring to life the

incredible history of regional law enforcement, from the days when police vehicles

lacked any radio communication and police stations had dirt floors, to the modern

era of mobile phones and air-conditioned patrol cars.

The Miniaturist Jessie Burton 2014 AF BURT It’s 1686 Amsterdam and 18 year old Nella Oortman comes to the city to begin a new life as the wife of illustrious merchant trader Johannes Brandt, someone she only met briefly at their wedding weeks before. She is far from welcomed in her new home, while Johannes is kind yet distant; he is locked in his study or at his warehouse office leaving Nella alone with his sister, the sharp-tongued and forbidding Marin. Johannes presents her with an extraordinary wedding gift: a cabinet-sized replica of their home. To furnish her gift, Nella

engages the services of a miniaturist, an elusive artist whose tiny creations mirror their real-life counterparts in eerie and unexpected ways. Nella is an outsider to the closed world of the Brandt household. But as she uncovers its unusual secrets, she begins to understand the dangers that await them all. In this deeply religious society to be different is a threat, and not even a man as rich as Johannes is safe. Only one person seems to see the fate that awaits them. Is the miniaturist giving them clues to help them or deciding their fate through these remarkable creations? I’m a huge fan of historical novels and this one for me paints a picture of life in Amsterdam in the 17

th Century. Cleverly written it brings in a little mystery with twists

and turns that I did not see coming. Karin

Hidden Barbara Taylor Bradford 2014 AF BRAD

If you want a quick interesting read then this is the one for you. Claire Saunders, attractive with a seemingly loving successful husband, talented daughter, and a good job in fashion is hiding the fact she is a battered wife. There is mention of Claire’s first love who is the father of her daughter. With the help from her friends, she manages to seek refuge in a nunnery. This is one of Barbara Taylor Bradford’s shorter stories, but it keeps you wondering what Claire’s emotionally-disturbed husband has in store for his wife. Lyn

Good Murder, a William Power mystery

Robert Gott

2004

AF GOTT

Set in our Maryborough on the Mary river in 1942 this is a cracking good yarn about an incompetent actor who thinks he can be a Detective in his spare time. This only leads him deeper into the mire. He is the only person who is unaware of his total stupidity in just about every-thing. There are some very funny moments created by this bumbling ' would be' Detective. Power's sense of humour

comes across with the ease of the of the accomplished author. This is not a serious murder mystery, but is absolutely entertaining in the grizzly details of the multiple murders and suspects. The city of Maryborough is so familiar to us that streets, build-ings etc. are all authentic. A good author can utilize real locations to make fiction be-lievable to the reader. A light hearted read with a sense of the ridiculous. Thea

The Husband’s Secret Liane Moriarty 2013 AF MORI Set in the Sydney suburb of Hornsby, three separate families are brought together. The first chapter introduces Cecilia, her three beautiful daughters and her husband John-Paul who has hidden an explosive secret for many years. While her husband is away on a business trip, Cecilia discovers an envelope containing a letter addressed to her from her husband, only to be opened in the event of his death. This is the secret that has lain dormant that will turn their lives upside down, ending their perfect suburban lives forever. Tess, her husband Will, their son Liam as well as Tess’s joined at the hip cousin Felicity are a family from Melbourne that soon become involved in the same suburban community in Sydney. The reason being that Tess discovers Will and Felicity have fallen in love right under her nose. Tess needs some retreat time, so she and Liam return to Sydney to care for Tess’s mother Lucy, who has just broken her ankle. Tess enrols Liam at St Angela’s Catholic Primary school where she used to attend and where Cecilia’s children now attend. She is quite amazed to discover Connor Whitby who she used to date in high school, is the school’s PE teacher. Connor just happens to still hold a flame for Tess and coincidentally is unmarried! The school’s administrative assistant, Rachel is heading towards retirement. Everyone in the school community feels Rachel’s pain of losing a fifteen year old daughter, Janie, so many years ago. Rachel has held onto so much anger that her daughter’s murderer was never found. She also never got over the fact that Connor Whitby, Janie’s boyfriend at the time, was the last person to see her beautiful Janie alive! Liane Moriarty has entwined so many characters and their seemingly perfect suburban lives into a novel that entails mystery, romance, history and family sagas. I can see this story going from bestseller to blockbuster. The ending is unforgettable. Karen

The Undertaking Audrey Magee 2014 AF MAGE This is a bleak tale of survival at any cost. It shows that in a war there are no winners, especially for those who are swept up in the course of history. Cilla

The Narrow Road to the Deep North Richard Flanagan AF FLAN This is that book: winner of the “Man Booker Prize”, Controversially anointed by the Prime Minister against the advice of his literary advisers, praised by critics on both sides of the Atlantic and in Australia. I have my doubts. There are plot developments that a Mills and Boon author would blush at. An example; after the war the hero, a famous surgeon in an unhappy marriage is walking across the Sydney Harbour Bridge when, coming towards him he sees the long-lost love of his life with two young girls. He doesn't speak to her for fear of causing her distress. Later it is revealed she is a widow and the children are her nieces! His sudden finer feelings are at variance with his character as a committed and constant womaniser. In another bizarre twist, one of the hero soldiers who died on the Burma-Thai Railway turns out to be the illegitimate son of the hero’s long estranged brother. Hang about. One Australian reviewer wrote this may be “The Great Australia novel”. Whether it is trash or treasure it certainly isn’t that. Any critic must be able to take, and learn from, criticism. If any reader thinks I have got it wrong please let us know. I am sure the editor will publish your comments. Rae

A Great and Glorious Adventure Gordon Corrigan ANF 994.025 CORR This is the story of a series of wars between England and France between 1337 and 1452 now referred to as “The hundred year war”. Gordon Corrigan is a retired senior English army officer who can write about warfare as a warrior and is also a very knowledgeable historian. At the time of the hundred years war English kings had powerful claims to the Tirane of France and English lords had similar claims in individual areas. These wars were fought in

pursuance of these claims. Although the English won every major battle ending up at Agincourt they were never able to secure their claims in perpetuity. This was caused by many factors: political instability in England, a shortage of money, France had a larger population and was also much richer, the English didn’t have enough men, longer lines of resupply, the age old difference between interior and exterior line of communication. There were long-term consequences for the English at the start of the wars, most English nobles thought of themselves as Europeans as they had lands on both sides of the Channel and they spoke a form of French. The author makes the point that even today the English really don’t trust foreigners particularly the French. On the other hand the French still talk of “Perfidious Albion.” A few years ago the author commanded a contingent at a French armistice day parade. After a good lunch his host, A French General put his arm around his shoulders and said, in French, “never Forget, you are the hereditary enemy:. Rae

King of the birds written & illustrated by Helen Ward

Scoresby, Vic : Five Mile Press, 2008

E WARD

This is a story of how the birds select their King with a

delightful and unexpected surprise at the end. On each

page are superb and inventive illustrations of all kinds of birds.

Both of Helen's other books "The Cockerel and the Fox" and "The Town Mouse and

the Country Mouse" are beautifully illustrated retellings of the age old fables we all

know.

You will find at the back of The Cockerel and The Fox a key or index for the rare farm

breeds of the animals depicted through the book and also for all the different birds

illustrated in King of the Birds.

Gympie’s Famous Boxing Champion My Great Great Uncle was Archie Bradley, who was a famous Boxing Champion back in the 1920’s. He was known as the “Gympie Whirlwind” or the “Gympie Tornado”. Archie was born at Wickham Street in Gympie on 4 January 1897. He was the seventh of 10 children born to John and Minnie Bradley. John was born in 1860 in Ulverston, England and (née Gierke, b. 1866, Toowoomba). In September 1917 he had his first professional fight against Joe Healy at the Theatre Royal in Gympie. After 15 rounds the fight was awarded to Healy which was believed to be a controversial decision. Archie went on to win 14 fights in Gympie before travelling to Brisbane in 1918, when he was 21 years old, to further his career. In an eight-month period in Brisbane he had seven wins in seven bouts. He went up against boxers such as “Smiling Georgie” Malouf, Roy Hayward, Bert Secombe and Jimmy Hill. He was even able to knock out the famous Eddie Lynch after nine rounds of fighting. From 1922 – 1924 he was the Australian Welterweight Champion. It was not uncommon for his fans to fill stadiums in Brisbane and Sydney just to watch him fight. In the 1920s his stamina and athletic ability as both a boxer and also as a rugby league player became quite legendary. At the height of his career he had whole pages in magazines and newspapers devoted to him and his boxing. After his retirement from boxing, Archie bred greyhounds for racing. These included “Archie’s Wonder”, “Bradley’s Best”, and “Archie’s Gift”. Sadly Archie passed away in March 1969 . Rachel
