Les Mise Comes to The Chemainus Theatre Festival - June 20 - Sept. 7

LesMisérables starts a 3-month run this June 7 and continues to June 20 at The Chemainus Theatre Festival. During

its three-month run, theatregoers experience the full splendour of Boublil and Schönberg's Tony award-winning show

with a special "up close" intensity. The intimate theatre, now transformed into the gritty streets of France, is an

immersion in the gut-wrenching tale adapted from Victor Hugo's famous novel in which it seems no good deed goes

unpunished. Tickets for Les Misérables, playing June 20 to September 7, are available at chemainustheatre.ca or by

Cowichan Valley Hospice Society - Requests Your Participation

The CVRD recently recommended anchor funding for the Cowichan Valley Hospice Society with an annual grant of

$62,500. The recommendation requires agreement from the Councils of North Cowichan, Ladysmith & Duncan to

become reality. Lake Cowichan has already voted its support. Hospice Society volunteers offer warm and intelligent

support to families dealing with the death of a loved one, and for those near death; they support 800 people annually

free of charge. Not solely on reliant on grants, the Society has its own robust fundraising processes and events. The

anchor funding will be under deliberation at upcoming Council meetings in Ladysmith & Duncan. To express your

thoughts on anchor funding for the Cowichan Valley Hospice Society, please consider attending:

Ladysmith - Mon. June 16 starting at either 5:00 or 5:30

Duncan - Mon. June 16, 7:00 pm

Contact the Cowichan Valley Hospice Society for questions or conversation regarding the funding.

Cowichan Family - Latest Research

Volunteer Cowichan and Social Planning Cowichan partnered to calculate the 2014 Living Wage for the Cowichan

Region. After factoring in the monthly costs for a model family, the Living Wage has been determined to be $17.04

per hour. The Living Wage for the Cowichan Valley is lower than that of Victoria at $18.93 and Vancouver at $20.10

but is consistent with other BC communities such as Kelowna at $16.98, Parksville at $17.30 and the Fraser Valley at

$17.02.

A living wage not only benefits employees, it helps sustain a capable workforce, reduces employee turnover, and

reduces training and recruitment costs for employers. A full copy of the 2014 Living Wage Report is available for

download from the Social Planning Cowichan website.

New Requirements - Anti-Bullying Anti-Harassment Practices in the Workplace

As of November 1, 2013, BC businesses have obligations under the Workers Compensation Act to take action to

prevent bullying and harassment in the workplace. The grace period for implementing this mandate ended February 1,

2014. A backgrounder and FAQ is available here.

To comply, all workers, and supervisors must be trained to recognize and respond to bullying and

harassment. BC businesses also need to have anti-bullying and anti-harassment policy, and reporting and investigation

procedures. Some organizations may find that current policies comply or require some adjustment. For those who are

self-employed, (where the owners are the only staff, B & B's), the legislation still applies ... but meeting the

requirement can be as simple as downloading & posting the WorkSafe BC template available here.

WorkSafeBC provides an online toolkit that outlines the requirements and includes guides and templates for

businesses to adapt, apply and subsequently comply with the legislation. Some organizations, after reviewing the

WorkSafe BC requirements, may find that current policies comply or require some adjustment.

Members may choose to take advantage of the the BC Chamber's partnership with Respect Group. Respect Group

provides the online course Respect in the Workplace which is available to members at a 20% discount - $32 rather

than $40. Preview the course online here. Members in good standing should have received an offer code to use at

Respect Group to receive the discount. (Or contact the Chamber office for the code.) Once you have the code, you are

Chamber News Looking for Members' Good Deeds

Every quarter the Chamber publishes the Chamber news in the Cowichan News Leader Pictorial. The next issue is in

August, and we plan to include a feature article on members contributions to the community. Does your business

support charitable causes? Are you flipping burgers, giving away goods or services, providing resources to non-profits,

bringing smiles to people's faces or otherwise giving freely to make good things happen? As critical as cash only

sponsorships are to our community, this particular article will highlight hands-on contributions, which see businesses

and non-profits working side by side. We suspect there are many examples of members' good deeds, and will include

as many as the format allows.

Please contact Elizabeth Croft at the Chamber to discuss. We look forward to hearing from you.
