Brief overview of Costa Rica

Costa Rica1 is located in Central America, it is known for its beaches, volcanoes and its great flora and fauna. It has a population of five million inhabitants in 51 100 km2, in addition, the country is characterized by a variety of ecosystems with microclimates ranging from tropical

dry to tropical humid climate with different landscapes ranging from tropical rainforests, deciduous forests, cloud forests, mangroves, volcanoes and beautiful beaches on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts.

Social Economy in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is characterized for having a democratic system that is celebrating 200 years of independence, it is characterized for being a solidary country with more than one hundred

years of having within its economic policies a strong associative component, of social economy and cooperativism where 21% of the population is cooperativist2. Chapter CIRIEC Costa Rica

The Chapter CIRIEC Costa Rica is made up of the Presidency by the representative of the Universidad Estatal a Distancia, the Vice-presidency by the representative of the Centro de Estudios y Capacitación Cooperativa R.L. (CENECOOP). The secretariats are made up of several institutions with a cooperative approach such as the National Institute for Cooperative

Development (INFOCOOP), the Confederation of Cooperatives of the Caribbean, Central and South America (CCC-CA) and the Permanent Commission of Self-management Cooperatives (CPCA), the National Council of Cooperatives (CONACOOP), FUNDEPOS University, and the Universidad Estatal a Distancia in the secretariats representing Logistics,

Promotion of Social Economy and Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Among the objectives of CIRIEC-Costa Rica is to conduct social, environmental and economic research for profit and non-profit organizations, experimental development in the field of social sciences and humanities, as well as professional scientific and technical

activities (CIRIEC Costa Rica, 2020).

Eighth CIRIEC International Congress on Social Economy Research

The Eighth CIRIEC International Congress on Social Economy Research called Social Solidarity Economy and the 2030 Agenda: Inclusive and sustainable development through

innovative social practices aims to convene academics, entrepreneurs and social sectors to contribute with their research by contributing to the theme of social and solidarity economy in the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs: 2015-2030), approved by the United Nations, which are 17 goals with 169 targets that include themes of action to

safeguard future generations, such as climate change, economic inequality, innovation, sustainable consumption, peace and gender equity, sustainable cities, flora and wildlife. Date and place of the congress

This prestigious event will be held on September 8, 9, and 10, 2021, at the Oikoumene Camp in the canton of Ochomogo, 15 km from San José Center, in the province of Cartago. Link to the place where the event will take place:

Objective of the congress

The objective of this congress will be to provide a space for exchange between scientists from more than 30 countries from all continents in relation to the field of Social Economy. More than one hundred papers will be presented that will deepen the discussion of different

thematic axes. Thematic axes of discussion: 1 Public policies and Social Solidarity Economy

a. Social Solidarity Economy to create economic, social and environmental development. b. Circular economy as a tool of the Social Solidarity Economy to protect terrestrial ecosystems. c. Political democratization and territorial development under a social solidarity economy

Christian Felber Professor of economics and sociology, specialist in sustainable economics. The Australian economist has developed a new economic model of the "Economy for the Common Good". 

Writer of Change Everything. Creating an Economy for the Common Good and Money. The New Rules of the Game. He was awarded the getAbstract International Book Award 2014. In addition, The "Economy for the Common Good" received the ZEIT-Wissen Award in 2017 and was placed in 2021 on the SPIEGEL bestseller list. Founding member of the global

justice movement Attac in Australia and initiator of Democratic Banking. Graciela Fernández Quintas Doctor in Law and Social Sciences with more than 20 years of experience in cooperative and

associative organization. President of Cooperatives of the Americas. Since 2014 she has been president of the Uruguayan Confederation of Cooperative Entities (CUDECOOP). She is a member of the Commission on Cooperative Law of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) and vice-president of the International Cooperative Alliance since October 2018. He

also has more than 20 years of experience in matters of Cooperative Organization, Associativism and Social Economy. Ariel Guarco

President of the ICA World. Cooperative leader who has led the development process of the Argentine cooperative movement since his youth and has built active links with the rest of the cooperative movement in the American Continent.

Economist, sociologist and public accountant, appointed doctor honoris causa by more than forty universities around the world. He is considered the Father of Corporate Social Responsibility and has written 65 books and hundreds of works on different areas of Development, Education, Public Health and Corporate Social Responsibility. The Argentine

economist has written on exclusion, the reconstruction of the State, the idea of social capital, ethics and the construction of an economy with a human face. Pascal Michard

Director of OFI Asset Management since 2017. Chairman and director of Socram Banque SA. He was appointed Chairman of the Macif group in May 2019. Henry Mintzberg

Academic professor and writer at Mc Gill University in Canada. Author of more than 20 books and 180 articles, he is also co-founder and active member of the International Master’s Program for Managers and the International Master’s in healthcare leadership. He revolutionized contemporary management, strategy and organizational forms. His latest

book, Rebalancing Society, exposes the need to design a more social economy to save society, democracy and the planet. Bruno Roelants

Director General of the International Cooperative Alliance. Bruno Roelants is secretary general of CICOPA, the International Cooperative Alliance's sectoral organization for industry and services, a role he has held since 2002. Under his leadership, the organization's membership increased from 18 countries in 2002 to 32 countries in 2018. His involvement

in research on cooperativism and employment worldwide, social, worker and production cooperatives is highlighted. Vic Van Vuuren

Director of the International Labour Organization; Chairman of the United Nations Task Force on Social and Solidarity Economy (UNTFSSE); Chairman of the Board of Directors of PAGE (Partnership for Action on Green Economy), member of the Supervisory Board of the Capital Coalition and member of COP26, Energy Transition Council. He is also a lawyer

by profession and was chairman of COPAC (Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives), served on the South African Council for Higher Education, the National Economic Development and Labour Council, the Governing Council of the International Labour Organization, the Council of Pan-African Employers Confederation and the South

Juan Fernando Álvarez Rodríguez President of the Scientific Committee of CIRIEC Colombia. Professor and researcher at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana of Colombia. He has been a research professor in Colombia

at the Javeriana, National, Santo Tomás, La Salle, ESAP, Minuto de Dios and Cooperativa Universities. He has been visiting professor at the Universities of Andina Simón Bolívar (Ecuador), Guadalajara (Mexico), Pelotas (Brazil) and Castilla La-Mancha (Spain). He has been a consultant for international organizations such as FAO, CAF, ILO, EURICSE, ACI

and editorial member of high impact journals. In addition, his publications are related to the Ibero-American Social Economy. Marie J. Bouchard

Researcher at CIRIEC International and CIRIEC Belgium. Coline Compère is a documentalist. She first worked at the library of Law, Political Science, Criminology, Economics, Management and Social Sciences of the University of Liège before being hired at CIRIEC-Belgium in 2015. She is in charge of CIRIEC's documentation center

and in particular of its multilingual knowledge platform, AGORA. In this context, she performs a recurrent documentary follow-up on new developments in public and social economy. He also regularly assists members of CIRIEC's international network and visitors in their documentary research.

Rafael Chaves Ávila Co-President of the Scientific Commission of the VIII Ciriec International Congress. Member of CIRIEC Spain. Professor at the University of Valencia. Professor of Economics

and Social Economy. He is director of CIDEC European documentation center in public, social and cooperative economy. Former director of the Research Institute IUDESCOOP. In addition, he has extensive experience in international and national projects, funded by the United Nations (UNRISD) and European institutions such as the European Economic and

Social Committee or the DGV of the European Union, the scientific network CIRIEC-International and the Spanish Ministry of Science and the 7th Framework Programme of the EU. He is currently a member of the Expert Group on Social Economy and Social Enterprises of the European Commission (2018-2024).

Simel Esim She is a program manager on cooperatives and social solidarity economy in the Enterprise Department of the International Labour Office. She was a specialist in the Regional Office

for Arab States on gender issues where she led work on gender equality, transition from informal to formal economy and decent work for domestic workers. Prior to joining the ILO she worked as an economist at the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW), Development Alternatives Institute (DAI) and the World Bank. She has written extensively

on gender equality, decent work, migration, economic organization and the informal economy. Her recent work includes a co-edited book, Cooperatives and the World of Work (2019 Routledge).

Monserrat Espinach Rueda Member of the Board of Directors of CIRIEC Costa Rica for the Secretariat of the Sustainable Development Goals for CIRIEC Costa Rica; Professor and researcher; Head of the Chair of Production at the Universidad Estatal a Distancia. She has written books and scientific

articles on productivity, sustainable development and social economy. She represented the Universidad Estatal a Distancia in 2017 before the Consejo de Nacional de Rectores (CONARE) in the Proposal for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals

(SDGs) for Costa Rica. Also, she is the creator of the Model Creation of University-based Cooperative Enterprises, social spin off model, with an economic-social approach. Hyunsik Eum

Strategy and Statistics Coordinator of the International Cooperative Alliance. Federico Li Bonilla Vice President of the Scientific Commission of the WIII CIRIEC International Congress, member of CIRIEC International and Executive Director of CIRIEC Costa Rica. He is also

the Director of the School of Management Sciences of the Universidad Estatal a Distancia. He represents the Universidad Estatal a Distancia in the Red Universitaria Euro-latinoamericana en Economía Social y Cooperativa (RULESCOOP). Post-doctor in economic sciences, professor, researcher, and writer of several books and articles on the

Costa Rican cooperative model and social economy. He is the creator of the Model for the Creation of University-based Cooperative Enterprises, a model with a social-economic approach that the President of Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado, in May 2021, presented to the Governing Council and supports the model as a path to follow to reduce the social gaps in

the country. Carmen Marcuello Servós She is a member of the Scientific Commission for the Social Economy of CIRIEC-Spain and

of the International Scientific Commission "Social & Cooperative Economy" of CIRIEC-International. Professor in the Department of Business Management and Organization at the University of Zaragoza. Since 2003 she is director of the research group GESES-University of Zaragoza. Co-founder of Musethica in 2012. Since 2016 she is director of the Chair

Cooperatives and Social Economy, Caja Rural de Teruel of the University of Zaragoza and President of the Ibero-American Observatory of Employment and Social Economy-OIBESCOOP. Also, she participated in the creation of CEPES-Aragon.

Daniel Nagao Meneses Member of CIRIEC-Brazil. Law graduate (PUC-Campinas). Master and Doctor in Politics and Economic Law (Mackenzie Presbyterian University), Post-Doctor in Law (USP). Post-Doctor in Economics (UNESP-Araraquara). Professor of the Graduate Program in Political

and Economic Law at Mackenzie Presbyterian University School of Law. Gabriel Roomthé-Beaulieu Originally from Baie-Comeau (Quebec, Canada), he studied economics, politics and public

administration in Quebec, London, Ottawa and Paris. Since an internship in the Quebec public administration in 2013, he has never left the world of social economy, which led him to Territoires innovants en économie sociale et solidaire (TIESS) (Innovative Territories in

Social and Solidarity Economy) in 2016 and then to Geneva in 2019. Back in Montreal, she works at TIESS as a transfer agent, in addition to other mandates related to her expertise (social impact measurement, evaluation and research in social economy).

Barbara Sak Senior Economic Researcher. Managing Director of CIRIEC International and CIRIEC Belgium, she has contributed to and co-directed several national and international interdisciplinary research and projects (grouping up to 25-30 researchers) in the field of

services of general and collective interest, whether economic or non-economic, and public enterprises. His main field of expertise is public policy in terms of regulation, modes of provision and organization, financing and evaluation of such services and of the so-called third sector or social economy (i.e. cooperatives, mutuals, foundations, non-profit

organizations). Jérôme Schoenmackers Ageérôme Schoenmaeckers holds a PhD in economics and management. His doctoral thesis

research focused on the care of dependent elderly people, by studying the role of the three main actors and their interactions: the family, the state and the market. Working at CIRIEC International (International Center for Research and Information on Public, Social and Cooperative Economics) since 2019, his research interests are evolving and are no longer

limited to public economics. As project manager at CIRIEC Belgium in social economy, he conducted a review of different mapping exercises in social economy. Visiting professor at HEC-Liege and research professor at CIRIEC International and CIRIEC Belgium.

As this is a hybrid event, it is recommended to bring your smartphone, tablet or laptop with hands-free or headphones, as workshops will be held virtually. The workshops will be held in six different rooms where participants will move to each room, according to the thematic axis or title of the lecture to be given, also, they will be able to

watch the transmission from a screen from the comfort of their seats; the workshops will have English-Spanish, Spanish-English translation. Attire and items to bring to the event venue

It is recommended to wear casual clothes, with comfortable shoes for walking on stone or semi-paved roads. It is mandatory by regulations from the pandemic protocol of the Ministry of Health of Costa Rica, to wear a mask or mouth mask to enter the event site and during the entire stay of the

congress. It is recommended to bring an umbrella or umbrella and a coat for cool evenings. Distribution of conference rooms, restrooms, food areas, parking and rest areas

Main hall and workshop rooms

Bamboo Room This is the main room for international conferences.

Equipped for 170 people and staff at a distance of 1.80 meters between each person. Each person will have his or her own desk and will be able to view all the international conferences, both those given by the presenters as well as the virtual ones. There will be live transmission on screens located in different parts of the main hall.

The place is open to protect people's safety and there will be awnings on the sides in case of rain.

Chirripó Room Equipped so that the exhibitor can give his presentation with a maximum of twenty face-to-

face participants and up to 500 virtual participants, the moderator and the exhibitor are projected on a large screen. The participants enter the place, in case the fields are full they will have to see the expositions virtually in the waiting rooms. In the hall, they will remain at a distance of 1.80

Modality of the workshops

In-person mode: these are workshops in which the exhibitors present in Costa Rica in person.

Virtual/presential (hybrid) mode: these are workshops in which the speakers are present in Costa Rica and other people in different places are present virtually.

Virtual mode: these are workshops where all the exhibitors are in the virtual platform and are not in Costa Rica. Participants from Costa Rica who wish to participate in virtual workshops connect to the workshop with their cell phone or laptop.

Equipment and materials required by exhibitors

In-person participants are required to bring a cell phone and headset to participate in the virtual workshops.
