We had help with luminaries, the Sunday School Pageant, a soup luncheon, a very special visitor, and the Christmas Eve Nativity scene. Thanks again for supporting our youth. ANNIVERSARY SUNDAY CELEBRATION JANUARY 24 – Our actual anniversary date is January 22. That is when the first service was held of the group of people who became the First Congregational Church. The Reverend Norman McLeod preached. For our Anniversary Sunday, the Rev. We will have a special Anniversary Dinner following the service. Health Tips from Parish Nurses – Superbugs By Diane Forster-Burke

Penicillin was first discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928 but not until WWII was penicillin used widely in the fight against infection. Since that time, numerous antibiotics have been developed and successfully used to fight various bacterial infections. However, we have overused antibiotics or have misused them thus causing some bacteria to develop drug resistance. (Parade Magazine, Dec. 6, 2015). Some people take only part of their prescribed dose, or they go to their health care provider demanding to receive an antibiotic for something like a virus that is not affected by antibiotics. Additionally, bacteria can mutate and become antibiotic resistant. The CDC (www.cdc.gov/drugresistance/about) reports from a National Data Survey that annually at least 2,049,442 drug resistant illnesses occur and 23,000 deaths occur. Drug resistant bacteria are called “Superbugs” in the popular language. Some of the superbugs are: Clostridium Difficile (C. Diff), Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), and Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus (MRSA). C. Diff kills more than 15,000 people annually in the US. This infection is most often found in people who have recently been hospitalized and have received antibiotics. CRE kills 600 people annually and has become nearly resistant to any of our medications. MRSA causes 11, 285 deaths annually. It can initially be noted as a wound infection and then can become systemic in the bloodstream. We are also seeing drug resistance in food borne illness such as salmonella and

campylobacter. Often with these illnesses, our food sources have been exposed to antibiotics (in cattle, poultry, pigs) and thus these bacteria have developed resistance. So what do we do?

• Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (for at

least 20 seconds or one round of “Rise and Shine, and Give

God Your Glory, Glory”).Try to avoid antibacterial soaps as

these contribute to resistance. Disinfect kitchen sponges by

microwaving them daily in 1 inch of water for 1 minute.

Clean and disinfect food surfaces. Do not use the same

surface or utensils for meat and vegetables as this causes

cross-contamination. Wash hands frequently. Be compulsive!!

• Only take antibiotics when necessary, and finish the entire

course of medication as prescribed. New research indicates

that antibiotics may not be needed for childhood ear

infections and strep throats.

• Switch to antibiotic free meat.

• Try to spend as little time hospitalized. If you are

hospitalized, you have the right to ask your health care

providers to wash their hands if you think they have not.

• Get vaccinated against pneumonia, flu, and meningitis.

We are now into Marijke’s Interim Call. We are delighted to have her, but will steer clear of talking about her plans and objectives: better to hear them from her directly. What we can report is that we are taking to heart the message and observations that Al left us at his last Deacons meeting. It was touched on a couple of weeks ago in the Worship Service, when everyone was asked to “move up one row,” in order to bring us a bit closer and make for a warmer environment. You might ask: what does warmth have to do with worship? Well, here we tie to Ron Sawdey’s excellent reflection on the recent Pew Poll and the impact on organized religion. Why are people disengaging from Sunday Worship, and religious participation generally? Theories abound, but the search for personal connection in an isolating society is a big part of it. It is ironic that in today’s ubiquitous social media interconnectedness, people are feeling more isolated and alone than any time in history. Many who are looking to a traditional Sunday Service also want to feel connected to a personal, comforting God, and a big, majestic worship space can hinder the comfort level being sought. In that vein, we are trying to make the Sanctuary space less imposing and austere. We have had some suggestions, and the Deacons are pondering this long and hard. Moving closer together is one thought. You will notice the increased use of banners and this will be continued and enhanced after the Christmas decorations come down. We don’t claim to fully understand what where this is headed, but it is a process, and once begun, will continue, though admittedly in a less than deliberate and fully-planned manner. We are looking to you for input, ideas, and suggestions. Let us know how you think we can better experience and convey the message and Good News of a comforting, embracing God.

JANUARY OUTREACH Written By Robin Smith

First Congregational Church, in association with Catholic Community Services, participates in serving thousands of hot, nutritious meals to individuals in need at St. Vincent de Paul Dining Hall. Five times a year we, as a church, make and serve 600-700 sandwiches. In order to support this continued commitment, Outreach donations for the month of January will go toward this project. Donations will be used to purchase the supplies needed to make the sandwiches and to continue our dedication to feed those in need in our community.
