July, 2015 Dear Friends of Carmel,
As we approach the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel during this Year of Consecrated Life, I am reminded of the life of our Foundress, Mother Thérèse Chevrel. An instrument of God, she followed Christ closely to translate the Gospel into a way of life. She read the signs of the times with the eyes of faith, and responded to the needs of the church, founding the Sisters of Mount Car-mel in Louisiana in 1833.
To open the Year of Consecrated Life, the Sisters of Mount Carmel gathered on February 8, 2015 at our Motherhouse in New Orleans and at Saint Leo Convent in Lafayette. We prayed to-gether and gave thanks to Our Loving God whose constant presence upholds the communal jour-ney of the sisters within the loving embrace of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. We gave thanks and paid homage to our Foundress, Mother Thérèse Chevrel, and the members of the Sisters of Mount Carmel who have gone before us. It is their deep dedication and commitment to follow in the foot-steps of Jesus Christ that inspires us to continue the life, the charism, and the community they be-gan. The Sisters of Mount Carmel would never be who we are today without their legacy, as they prepared and paved the way for us.
Looking back at the past with grateful remembrance invites us, the Sisters of Mount Carmel, “to live the present with passion,” as Pope Francis called consecrated men and women to do. As consecrated women this challenges us to assess our fidelity to the mission entrusted to us and to fully live the essential aspects of our consecrated life. As I reflect on this, I am reminded of this passage from Mother Thérèse Chevrel’s Book of Advice to Sister St. John Lefrais, 1879:
“…To love one another means to uphold one another, to help one another, to esteem one another, to make one another happy, to look after one another, to please one another, to sustain one another, to lead one another to heaven.”

Congregation of Our Lady of Mount CarmelPlease include the following intentions in the prayers/novena of the sisters on the occasion
of the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
Living in a society with diverse and rich cultures, we constantly encounter diff erent forms of chal-lenge, and this invites us to respond to God’s call to off er a concrete model of community living by rec-ognizing the dignity of each person, to uphold each other with respect, and to acknowledge each other’s unique gift s. Th is makes it possible for us to live in harmony with our sisters and brothers.
Th e Sisters of Mount Carmel strive to live our commitment to radically follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, to be a Carmelite presence in the diff erent ministries to which we are called and to respond to the needs of the people in the mission places where we are present. With enthusiasm we strive to embrace our future with hope!
On this occasion of the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, I humbly ask you, our Friends of Car-mel, to help me express my heartfelt appreciation to each of these lovely women of Carmel who freely and selfl essly off er their lives in consecration to Christ to help fulfi ll the Mission of the Church, by praying and remembering each one of them with gratitude as you look at their pictures on the next page.
May Our Lady of Mount Carmel bless you with an abundance of her love and protection.
Gratefully in Carmel,
