Schedule ofShabbat Services& Candle Lighting
The most well known symbol of Chanukah is the Menorah (more correctly –the Chanukiah) and the holiday is referred to as the Festival of Light (ChagHaUrim). Yet Chanukah is essentially a celebration of a military victory - onethat could not have been expected. After all, it was the small volunteer army ofthe Jews led by the Maccabees against the mighty Syrian-Greek Empire. JudahMaccabee is so revered for his military expertise that a statue of him is at WestPoint. His innovative military tactics defeated his mighty enemy. Yet theChanukiah still stands out as the most obvious Chanukah symbol.
I think it has to do with our fascination with light. It is such a special andbeautiful symbol and it lends itself to many interpretations. Light can dispelldarkness and show us the right path. Light means education, culture andpurposeful living. It has all the metaphors you could think of. One, which theRabbis loved to focus on, was the fact that the light of a lamp remains undimmedeven if you use it to light dozens of wicks and flames. The candles continue toburn just as brightly and warmly as they did before they were used to light anothercandle. The Rabbis liken that to a mitzvah. When we give tzedakah, visit the sick, comfort mourners, study Torah or help make a minyan we not only aren’tdiminished – we are actually strengthened. We feel stronger as a result of themitzvah we did. Think about it. You may be exhausted when you need to stop bya house to make a minyan but when you leave you are exhilarated that you madethe effort. We give generously to the causes that are close to us and we feel betterabout who we are and about our community.
There is a great debate in the Talmud about how we should light theChanukiah. The Academy of Shammai taught that we should start with eight andthen diminish the light by one each night. The Academy of Hillel taught that webegin with one candle (plus the Shamash) and we increase each night by one untilall eight burn on the final night. Hillel’s argument won out. Why? Because it isdifficult to see things as diminishing rather than expanding and growing.Shammai may have been more ‘scientifically’ correct in that the amount of oilmust have diminished with each passing day. However, Hillel was correct insuggesting that a person needs to see his or her world as getting brighter andbetter with each passing day.
There is a very serious battle going on in the world today between good andevil and we are caught up in it in every way. We are Americans and our countryand our way of life is under attack. And we are Jews, which means our concernfor Israel has us in a state of great anxiety. We must learn the lessons of theChanukiah. Whatever we give for Israel and for our country will only serve tostrengthen us – not to diminish us. Just the first candle is burning and eachsuccessive period of time in this battle against the evils of terrorism will find uslighting additional candles. The Maccabees knew that the day would arrive whenthey would enter the Temple and liberate it from those who had defiled it. Theyjust weren’t sure what day that would be. We light the Chanukiah - adding acandle each night - to remind ourselves that whatever sacrifices we are calledupon to make now will leave us stronger, not weaker, and we pray that the daywill arrive when the light of freedom and peace will burn brightly for us inAmerica and our brothers and sisters in Israel.

“Don’t place a period where God has only placed a comma”.This quote is attributed to comedian Gracie Allen. It came tomind, not only because it is on the cork bulletin board which sitsdirectly over my computer monitor, but because we are headingtowards the end of another secular year. Is it the end of a year ormerely a pit stop before resuming our routine?
Yes, many of us use this annual calendric milestone to utterresolutions for stopping certain habits and beginning renewed (ornew) approaches to lifestyle or other manner of behavior. Rare itis that any of these “never again” resolutions hold for very long,or at least not the first time we utter those words. Sometimes weneed but a respite from certain habits or practices to garner a freshperspective and even if we do slip backwards, we can always tryagain. Placing a period at this venture is no guarantee to actingupon our intentions and we often feel deflated or as if we havefailed. If we place a comma though, and realize this is a trialmoment for ourselves, then, if we should fail, we may not findourselves psychologically berating ourselves; rather we wouldsee this as an expected blip in our effort and possibly try again.
It is somewhat akin to the message I share with weddingcouples and BM students. If one goes into the event expectingperfection one is likely to be disappointed. Rarely does awedding, Bar or Bat Mitzvah, Cantorial concert, convention etc.go off perfectly. If one has fairytale dreams of perfection it cansap the energies right out of someone and they may never let goof the mishap. But if one expects some manner of mishap and itdoes occur, then one can chuckle to themselves and think, “well, there it is, we knew something would happen” and chalk it up toreality of ‘stuff happens”.
Franz Rosenzweig, early 20th century Jewish theologian andphilosopher used a phrase which I use in multiple arenas. Hespoke the two words “not yet” to imply one cannot put a periodinto their life as it relates to being a practicing Jew. He believedin the gradual approach in which the observances slowly madetheir impact by “ringing a bell” for him. Typical of this approachis Rosenzweig’s answer to someone who asked him whether hewore tefillin [phylacteries]: “Not yet,” he replied.
Don’t set your definitive periods this coming January 1st.Think of the turning of the year as a chance to place a comma inyour life’s journey, a time to reflect, to pause and review. It is atime to refocus on our priorities and personal aspirations andhealth. Demonstrative promises, pledges and resolutions are oftenconfronted with failure to meet such strict mandates uponourselves. Make the comma your ally and turn the dead end intoan opportunity for renewal.
December 31st, enjoy your evening, indulge in moderation, lay your head upon your pillow with good intentions of a newyear of possibilities ahead and “Say good night Gracie” (noperiod intended)
AN IMPORTANT MESSAGEFROM YOUR CLERGY
Being part of your lives, especially during important life-cyclemoments, is very important and means a great deal to us.
With the most genuine of intentions, all of your clergy remainalert to the needs of our members. As we have been blessed to bea growing congregation (now about 1250 households) theincidence of life cycle occasions has grown exponentially. Thebritot, baby namings, weddings, funerals, and dedications have usin constant communication with numerous families all the time.Recent months have also seen an increasing incidence of Shivavisits, hospital visits and requests for communication withextended family members who are ill as well as outreach to ourelderly members who can no longer physically get to thesynagogue.
In this context, we kindly ask for understanding from you,our members.
We, the clergy, each try our best to make personal calls orvisits, but these demands coupled with other responsibilities suchas teaching and counseling sometimes impede our best intentions.
It is also sometimes impossible for all three of us to call and/orvisit each and every member in the hospital, sick at home or sittingShiva. From time to time, one of us may not learn of the situation. Please know that whoever calls or visits represents all of us andwill do his best to communicate with the other clergy.
Most of all, please know that we are all here for all of you withcaring and concern and will do our best to reach out to you in allsituations.
You are always in our thoughts and prayers.

Let’s make this a

Anyone who has everattended any kind of convention knows that the experience lastsmuch longer than the tzotchkes that you took home. Support ouryouth and if you know of an appropriate aged young person, encourage them to take part in one of our youth groups. There areplenty of programs coming in 2015.
Speaking of our youth, I’d like to highlight our Youth Vice-President, Howard Sigal.
Meet your Executive BoardHoward grew up in Minneapolis belonging to a conservative
synagogue, Beth El. His wife Jody is from the other side of the tracks(river) being a native of St Paul andbelonging to a different conservativesynagogue. They just celebrated their 25thanniversary and have 2 children. Howardattended the University of Minnesota forhis undergrad and law degrees. He hasworked for the past 28 years for GeneralGrowth Properties in their legaldepartment. This is Howard’s second stinton the executive board, serving as housevice-president a few years ago. In his free time, Howard enjoysrunning, reading and sports. We kicked off November with our 4th annual Beth Shalom – BethJudea Congregations retreat. This year’s theme was Israel. WhenBeth Judea’s Education Director, Anna Besser, and I planned theevent, Israel was in the midst of a terrible war in Gaza. It highlightedfor us the need to teach about Israel when it is difficult as well aswhen it is easy. Our students learned about the different symbols inthe Hatikvah, discussed the challenges of making difficult choices topreserve life and freedom, and imagined themselves embedded inIsraeli society. Kids also had the opportunity to climb up a 25 footclimbing wall, zip along a zip-line and work on group-building skillsas they negotiated a low ropes course. The event was an unqualifiedsuccess.
Our Aleph and Bet Dinner took place mid-November. RabbiWolkin welcomed us, and Cantor Stoehr joined us for the event. Thestudents were loud and energetic, leading parents in a brief butmeaningful service. Especially nice was the moment when thechildren showed the parents how to “sing” the Oseh Shalom prayerin sign language. About one hundred students and parents took part.
Four days later, our 5th – 8th graders and their parents joinedtogether for “Everything you wanted to know about Judaism butwere afraid to ask AND Everything you were afraid your child wouldask you.” Rabbi Melman, Rabbi Wolkin, Cantor Stoehr and Dr. BobSpector collaborated to address just these kinds of questions. Thegoal was to increase Jewish discourse at home. After pizza, salad, brownies and pop, we broke into small groups to discuss the over 70questions that were either collected from the students by teachers orposted on Google docs. From the sharing at the end it was clear thatmany new topics for conversation at home were in the offing.
This is also the season for beginning Chai Mitzvah, an adulteducation opportunity with a few twists. One of the underlying goalsis for learning to be the engine that drives you into a more proactiveand well-grounded Jewish life. Chai Mitzvah is about: studying withabout 10 adult peers, and with Rabbi Wolkin and me; stretching bytaking on a new Jewish ritual or responsibility; and finally makingthe world a better place with a Tikkun Olam action project. It allbegins with an hour of study monthly on Shabbat mornings. Join inthe conversation!

I can’t believe the year has flown by once again! It seems likeevery year we start out thinking about the high holidays, and thenSukkot and Simchat Torah follow. Before you know it, it’s time forWinter Break and the second half of the calendaring year to begin.
This past year has been very special for me. At the end of lastyear, we graduated a great group of seniors from our USY chapter. On High Holidays it was great seeing everyone come back and tellme about how happy they were to be back in Beth Shalom. Also, inmy third year I have started getting to know everyone and see themcome up through our youth group.
Our USY chapter has more Beth Shalom members than it has inthe past years, and our Kadima programs are growing as well. OnJanuary 1st, 8th graders become eligible for USY, and we hope theywill join us on Thursday nights for lounge nights in the youth lounge.
We also have two family field trips which were just introduced. On December 14th, we are taking a trip to the Jewish Heritage nightat the Northwestern basketball game. In addition to this, on February1st we are taking a trip to see Frozen on Ice at the United Center. Iwould love to get as many participants as possible. Kids can comealone, but family members are encouraged as well.
I want to wish everyone an amazing Winter Break and a HappyNew Year. We have lots of great things to come within the youthdepartment, and I look forward to seeing everyone at our programs!

NEWS FROM THE KETER MINYANBy Harold Schwartz
During the High Holidays, mention was made by the clergyof the issue of a set seat in the synagogue known as the MakomKavua. As many know, this is an important concept for mepersonally as growing up in a traditional environment; I quicklylearned the application of this custom.
The practice of makom kavua is mentioned in the Talmudin Berachot, as derived from the behavior of Abraham. Theshacharit or morning prayers are attributed to Abraham as iswritten in Genesis 19:27 “And Abraham got up early in themorning…” The end of the verse teaches us about the conceptof makom kavua, as it says “to the place where he stood beforeGod”. The Rabbis derive from this last statement that Abrahamwas careful to stand in the same place every time he prayed.
The Talmud discusses the importance of the set place andsays that it is something that the regular attendee should striveto maintain. It also points out that others should be respectfulof the individual’s seat and allow that person the opportunity toaccess it whenever possible. It is the “whenever possible” thathas generated much discussion. Rabbis have had extensivediscussions on just how far an individual should “protect” theirseat. The consensus is that one should remember that Abrahamalso represents the concept of chesed or kindness and bemindful of that when evaluating the situation. The practice ofmakom kavua is steeped in thousands of years of Jewishtradition with many stories relating to its implementation andmuch satire. The following is taken from the Orthodox Uniononline; “I was once a guest in a particular shul. Shabbosmorning, shul was called for 9:00 AM. I showed up 9:00 AMand there was nobody there except for me and the rabbi, so I satdown in what seemed like a good seat. (It was on the aisle.)
Maybe ten minutes later, the next minyan participantarrived. He walked straight to me. Did he say “Welcome” or“Good Shabbos?” No, he said, “You’re in my seat.”I lookedaround incredulously at the empty room, full of equallyfunctioning chairs. I shrugged and moved to the next row.Believe it or not, the exact same thing happened with the nextperson’s arrival.
It took until 10:00 for a minyan to actually form. I wasinstructed to move five times between the minyan’s scheduledstarting time and it finally getting underway. The reason for thismusic-free game of musical chairs is the concept of “makomkavua,” a person’s designated place in his synagogue.”
In the end, the makom kavua should not be dismissed byanyone who did not experience its meaning while growing upin a traditional synagogue environment, but should be handledwith the utmost tact and respect to all involved.
KERUV CORNERKERUV: Welcoming Interfaith Families
BOB SPECTOR
Shalom Chaverim,After an interfaith couple has decided to
make a permanent commitment to eachother, decision making often turns to how toraise their children from a religious/spiritualperspective. This discussion can be difficultand as a result often does not occur until
after the couple has children as typified by the followingquestion to Dr. Bob.
Dear Dr. Bob,Like many couples today Steven and I openly discussed
our thoughts about parenting before getting married andhaving children. We both believe in an egalitarian approachand after five years of parenthood and two children we havedone wonderfully together until recently. As an interfaithcouple (I am Jewish) neither of us was particularly investedin religious practice and never felt a press to focus onreligion as part of our co-parenting discussions until now.Our daughter just turned five and our parents have asked usif we will be providing a religious education for Mari andJacob (3). Formal religious affiliation has never been thatimportant to either of us. However, we are both passionateabout our children being exposed to our respective religions(Steven was raised in a Baptist home). In keeping with ouregalitarian styles we are thinking of incorporating both ofour religions into our children’s spiritual and educationallearning and eventually allowing our children to decidewhen they are older. Choosing one religion feels like toomuch of a loss for us. What do you think we should do?
Dear Conflicted Parent,First, I want to assure you that it is not uncommon for
parents to defer the question of religious exposure of theirchildren. These discussions often begin when the oldestchild is about age five or six. Providing equal religiousexposure to your children can unfortunately lead to identityconfusion as they approach adolescence. The ‘who am I’question (which often includes religion) is difficult enough, but when children have to process two religious approachesthe process becomes even more difficult. In addition, yourchildren will feel like they are making a choice betweenmom and dad which I know is not your intention.Frequently, the end result is that children choose not toembrace any religious orientation which I do not think isyours or Steven’s intention. My recommendation is that youand Steve seek spiritual guidance from a Rabbi or Minister,or find a therapist who can help you determine what is inyour children’s best interests and help you resolve the lossone of you may feel by making a choice.
As always, I welcome your questions, comments, orfeedback and can be reached at [email protected].

It’s hard to believethat 2014 has come toa close and the NewYear is upon us. Whata great year we’vehad in Sisterhood. Our membershipnumbers are higherthan they’ve ever
been, we keep working on new and innovative programmingthat will interest our members, and 2015 has some great thingsin store for you!
We are so thrilled about the success of this year’s HolidayFaire. Suzanne Minkus and Sheri Smason worked so hardto get new vendors that we haven’t had before, and thepeople who came to shop showed their enthusiasm byspending lots of money! Thanks to Suzanne, Sheri andRobyn Rosengard, Vice President Ways & Means, for yourdedication and hard work.
Our first ever (well maybe not ever but it’s been a longtime) Men’s Club/Sisterhood Social event was a blast. CasinoNight at CBS – we shared laughs, drinks and raised money forCBS – what could be better! Our thanks to Dan Sher andRobyn Rosengard for a successful and fun event.
We had a wonderful evening with author Alyson Richman, who discussed her latest book The Garden of Letters. Manyof our members are fans of Alyson’s from her book The LostWife, so it was wonderful to meet her in person and hear aboutwhere her story inspirations came from. Yasher Koach toDebbie Bell for coordinating a great evening.
In Kiddushim news, we have started offering a separategluten-free table on Saturday mornings for our members andguests who have these food sensitivities. If you are someonewho is gluten-free, please stop by and check it out and tell yourfriends! This is a work in progress, and we welcome anycomments and suggestions that you may have.
We’ve changed the format of our monthly meetings – theyare open to all Sisterhood members and they start out with ashort speaker. In November, we were able to hear from PastPresident Ellen Grossman about her experiences on an IDFbase in Israel this summer. We’re getting great feedback fromthese speakers and we hope you’ll join us at one of ourmeetings – the next two dates are December 2 and January 6.
December brings the bright lights of Chanukah, wintervacation for the kids and hopefully some warmer climates forthose of you traveling and getting a break from the Chicagoweather. Hopefully the warmth of your loved ones keep youwarm despite the frigid temps! Speaking of warmth – join theSisterhood ladies at CBS Knits on December 7 & 14 andJanuary 11 & 13 to make blankets, hats and scarves for thosewho need them.
We’ve got some exciting events for January – including abook review on January 13, Family Bingo Night on January18, and former host of “Check Please” Alpana Singh as ourspeaker for Sisterhood Shabbat on January 31 – save the date!
